eṭu (p. 73) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To take up, lift up, raise, தூக்க. 2. To take off, take away, extract, take out, remove a stain, dirt, humor, &c., or one body from another, chemically, or otherwise combined, ஒன்றிலிருந்தெடுக்க. 3. To undertake, take in hand, enter upon, தொடங்க. 4. To adopt--as a sentiment, &c., receive, take--as one's own, அங்கீகரிக்க. 5. Will he who cannot pick out a stone from rice be able to lift the stone architrave of a temple vestibule? i. e. he who is incapable of little matters must be incapable of great ones. விழுந்தவனையெடாமலுதைக்கலாமா. Is it proper to kick, instead of raising, a fallen man? இந்தச்சீலையையெந்தக்கடையிலெடுத்தாய். In what bazaar did you buy this cloth? புல்லெடுக்கிறதரை. Ground covered with an exuberant growth of grass. எடாதஎடுப்பு, s. Living above one's rank, circumstances, means, &c., engaging in an enterprise, beyond one's powers, &c. எடாதஎடுப்பெடுக்கலாகாது. It is improper to engage in an enterprise above one's circumstances. எடுகூலி, s. Porterage, hire for carrying burdens, சுமைக்கூலி. எடுத்தடிமடக்கு, s. Retort, turning a person's reasons or remarks against himself, confuting one by his own arguments, anticipating a person in word, or action, in order to check, or thwart him in his object; interrupting one in speaking, &c. 2. Temerity, rashness; speaking, answering, or acting rashly, துணிவு. எடுத்தடிவைக்க, inf. To begin to step--as a child, காலைப்பெயர்த்துவைக்க. எடுத்தபடி, adv. A haughty person, an upstart, one who lives above his rank or circumstances, மேட்டிமைக் காரன். எடுப்புச்சாய்ப்பு, Gentility, genteel and obliging behavior, united with display, pomp, grandeur, &c., உயர்வுதாழ்வு. எடுப்புண்டது, appel. n. That which is taken and carried away. எடுப்புத்தேர், s. A small portable shrine for the conveyance of an idol on men's shoulders--opp. to இழுப்புத்தேர். கல்லெடுப்பு, s. A funeral rite. எடை, v. noun. tattam (p. 223) s. Gift, present, donation, grant--as land, &c., with due formality, in presence of witnesses human or divine, ஈகை.--Note. The sun is often appealed to as witness, and water is poured, by the bestower of a grant or gift, on betelleaf and gold in the right hand of the receiver. 2. Adoption, சுவிகாரம். (Sans. Datta) (c.) எள்ளுந்தண்ணீரும்விட்டுத்தத்தம்பண்ணிவிட்டேன். I gave the gift with water mixed with sesamum seed; (implying permanence.) தத்தங்கொடுக்க, inf. To give in adoption. தத்தபுத்திரன், s. (St.) Giving a girl in marriage by placing betel-leaf, paddy, and gold in her hand, and pouring water on these, the god of fire being invoked as a witness. He is supposed in stand on the top of the flame on the occasion; [ex தாரா, wife.]. மனோதத்தம், s. Purpose formed in the mind to make a grant. 2. A vow to a deity who is called to witness. tāṉ (p. 236) The reciprocal pronoun, himself, herself, itself, the genitive being தன்; in composition sometimes தற். 2. One's self. 3. An emphatic or intensive particle, signifying indeed, really, certainly, தேற் றச்சொல்; as அப்படித்தான், it is so. (c.) 4. A poem celebrating the different stages in the infancy and childhood of a hero, comprized in ten parts: 1. காப்பு, putting on the armrings, with magical rites; 2. செங்கீரை, first voluntary movements of the child compared to the motion of herbs by the breeze; 3. தால், lulling the child in the cradle with songs; 4. சப்பாணி, the first clapping of its hands; 5. முத்தம், kissing; 6. வாரானை, extending its hands and calling to be taken; 7. அம்புலி, showing the moon to the infant; 8. சிறுபறை, amusement of a small drum; 9. சிற்றில், making (in play) little houses, or trampling on those made by girls; 1. சிறுதேர். drawing little carriages.--Note. When a heroine is described, instead of the last three, the following are substituted, eighth கழங்கு, a kind of play with brass balls; ninth அம்மானை, a curious play with balls; tenth, ஊசல், swinging. There are two more compositions, bearing this title, one by குமரகுருபரதேசிகர், in praise of மீனாட்சி, the goddess at Madura; the other, by மார்க்கசகாயதேவர், of the childhood of Skanda. பிள்ளைத்தாய்ச்சி, s. mñcḷ (p. 339) s. Indian saffron, long-rooted turmeric, அரித்திரம், Curcuma longa.--Ofturmeric are different kinds, as கஸ்தூரிமஞ்சள், Amomum, L; கப்புமஞ்சள், கொச்சிமஞ்சள், a superior kind from Cochin; கறிமஞ்சள், another kind used for curries; கிழங்குமஞ்சள், turmeric with round roots; விரலிமஞ்சள், that with slender roots; மரமஞ்சள், a tree and its root so called, very bitter, and medicinal. A species of சாமந்தி with yellow flowers. மஞ்சட்டிரளை, s. Balls of turmeric taken by a widow to the funeral pile and given to relations, in token of her blessing; [ex திரளை.] மஞ்சட்டுணி, s. [vul. மஞ்சத்துணி.] A little piece of cloth dipped in turmeric water and applied to a sore eye. மஞ்சட்டேறு, s. A root of turmeric. See தேறு. மஞ்சட்பட்டு, s. Saffron-colored silk. மஞ்சட்பாவட்டை, s. A shrub, Red dye-root, Morinda citrifolia. மஞ்சணத்தி--மஞ்சணாற்றி, s. A kind of tree. See மஞ்சணுணா. மஞ்சணிறம், s. Yellow color. மஞ்சணீர், s. Turmeric-water with other ingredients for sprinkling on a company at the close of a temple-festival, or marriage; [ex நீர்.] மஞ்சணீர்குடித்தல், v. noun. Drinking turmeric water, in adopting a child. மஞ்சணீர்ச்சீட்டு, s. A written agreement of adoption. தத்தபுத்திரஉடன்படிக்கை. மஞ்சணீர்ப்பிள்ளை, s. An adopted child. மஞ்சணீர்விளையாட்டு--மஞ்சள்விளையா ட்டு, s. Play with turmeric-water, at the close of a temple-festival, or at a marriage.--Note. The ceremony of waving turmeric-water about an idol, to dispel the blight of unlucky eyes. மஞ்சளிளங்கலையன், s. [prov.] A kind of rice. See இளங்கலையன். மஞ்சளெண்ணெய், s.
