ām (p. 39) s. One of the poetic expletives, சாரியை. 2. An expletive, அசைநிலை. 3. A termination of the first person plural, in verbs of both classes, தன்மைப்பன்மைவி குதி. 4. A termination of the plural of verbs embracing the first and second person, உளப்பாட்டுத்தன்மைப்பன்மைவிகுதி. 5. A contraction of ஆகும், used to denote a quotation--as பெரியவனாம், it is said 'he is great.' 6. A contraction of the future of ஆ, in the third person neuter. 7. A particle of assent, yes; it is often doubled --as ஆம் ஆம், written, ஆமாம், and contracted to ஆமா. 8. A particle of comparison, ஓர் உவமவுருபு--as அல்லாங்குழலாள், a woman whose hair is black as darkness. (p.) வந்தாம். We came. பணியுமாமென்றும் பெருமை. Greatness is always humble. நானும் நீயுஞ்சென்றாம். I and you went. ஆங்காலம், s. The season when fortune favors and all things prove successful. ஆந்தனையும்--ஆமளவும். As much as possible. ஆமாறு, s. The proper manner of doing a thing, ஆகுமுறை. (p.) ஆமானவன், s. A worthy, competent respectable person, சிறந்தவன். (c.) ஆம்படி. In the manner which is agreeable to, or sufficient for. ஆம்புத்தி, s. āṟu (p. 43) s. A river, natural current, brook, channel or passage through shallows, a canal, நதி. (c.) 2. (p.) Way, road, path, mode, manner, rule, method, order, custom, circumstance, வழி. In this sense, in verse, the று, is sometimes omitted. 3. Morality, virtue, good conduct, way in a moral sense, the good or right way, ஒழுக்கம. சுரருலகெய்துமாறளித்தான. He endowed him with the bliss of the gods, or literally, granted that he should attain to the world of the gods. யான்வந்தவாசென்றியம்புதி Go and tell that I am come--ஆ for ஆறு. என்றவாறு. A form added to explanations of grammatical rules, &c., implying such is the meaning. ஆறலைக்க, inf. To rob in the highway, infest the road, வழிப்பறிக்க. (p.) ஆறலை--ஆறலைப்பு, v. noun. Highway-robbery, street-robbery, வழிப்பறி க்கை. ஆறலைக்கள்வருமளியராயினார். Even the highway-robbers have proved friends. (நடை.) ஆறாடி, s. A lascivious, idle fellow, a vagabond, a pest. 2. One not to be relied on, a changeling, man without character. ஆறுகட்ட, inf. To construct a dam across a river, construct the banks of a river. ஆறுகாட்டி, s. A guide, pilot, வழிகாட்டி. ஆறை--ஆற்றூர், s. The name of a town in the Carnatic. (p.) ஆறைநகர்காவலன், s. The king of that town. ஆற்றங்கரை, s. The bank of a river, shore of a river. ஆற்றிடைக்குறை, s. Blank, or dried spots in a river, an inlet, ait, அரங் கம்; [ex இடை, intermediate, et குறை, wanting.] ஆற்றிடைப்பட, inf. To be in the way, வழியிலிருக்க. 2. To meet in the way, வழியெதிர்ப்பட. (p.) ஆற்றுக்காலாட்டியர், s. Agricultural women of low caste, உழத்தியர். (p.) ஆற்றுக்கால், s. A dike, channel for conveying water to the fields, ஆற்று வாய்க்கால். ஆற்றுச்சுழி, s. The நீர்ச்சுண்டி, a water-plant, Aeschynomene paludosa. ஆற்றுப்பச்சை, s. A curious, greenstone--one of the one-hundred-andtwenty kinds of minerals--as நாகப்பச்சை. ஆற்றுப்படுத்த, inf. To lead, direct or conduct a person into the right way, வழிப்படுத்த. 2. To give advice, to conduct into the path of virtue, நன் மார்க்கத்திலுட்படுத்த. (p.) ஆற்றுப்படை, v. noun. The act of conducting, directing, &c., either physically or morally. 2. A poem, the object of which is to conduct one to a superior. விறலியாற்றுப்படை, s. A songstress directing another to a benevolent man. பாணராற்றுப்படை, s. A singer directing another to a patron. கூத்தராற்றுப்படை, s. An actor on the stage directing another to a generous man. பொருநராற்றுப்படை, s. A buffoon directing another to a prince. ஆற்றுப்பாசி, s. A water-plant, ஓர்பூடு, Caulinia indica, L. ஆற்றுப்பித்தல்--ஆற்றோரம், s. Side or bank of a river. ஆற்றுப்பூவரசு, s. A tree, ஓர்மரம், Trewia nudiflora, L. ஆற்றுப்பெருக்கு, s. A swelling of a river. ஆற்றுமடை, s. The channel or bed of a river, ஆற்றுக்காலின்மடை. ஆற்றுமரி, s. A shrub, நீருமரி. ஆற்றுமல்லிகை, s. A species of the Arabian Jasmin, ஓர்மல்லிகை, Jasminum sambac. ஆற்றுமுகத்துவாரம், s. The mouth of a river. ஆற்றுமுள்ளி, s. A thorny plant growing by the river, ஓர்பூடு, Dilivaria ilicifolia. ஆற்றுமேலழகி, s. A plant, ஓர்பூடு, Celsia coromandeliana, L. ஆற்றுவாளை, s. A river-fish. See வாளை. ஆற்றெதிர்ப்பட, inf. To meet on the road. ஆற்றொழுக்கு, v. noun. The flowing of a river, stream, current, ஆற்றுநீரோ ட்டம். 2. Rules following each other in regular and natural order, (lit.) the flowing of a river--one of the four aspects of a grammatical rule. See சூத்திர நிலை. தீயாறுடையான், s. (p.) அந்த இங்கிதத்தினாலே மனோவிகாரமாய். Being disturbed in mind by (her) gestures. தங்களைக்காத்திங்கிதம் பேசுகிறவர்கள். Those who wait about them, (for opportunity) and then make known their wishes. இங்கிதகவி, s. A poem in which the poet expresses the object or wish of his patron, having ascertained it by signs, gestures, &c., பாட்டுடைத்தலைவன்கருத் தைவிளக்குங்கவி. 2. To be on terms of friendship and intimacy, இனியநட்பாக. 4. To have peculiar relish or love in or for any thing, practice, &c., ஒன்றினிடத்திலினிப்புக்கொள்ள. (c.) இனிக்கச்சொன்னான். He spoke sweetly, so as to please, to win, to fascinate, &c. இனிச்சபண்டம், s. [prop. இனித் தபண்டம்.] Confectionaries. இனிப்பு, v. noun. Sweet, sweetness, deliciousness, pleasantness, agreeableness, &c., இனிமை. வியாபாரத்திலேயவனுக்கினிப்புக்கொண்டது.... He has great pleasure in trade, he has found great profit in it. அவனுக்குமிவனுக்குமினிப்புக்கொண்டது..... These persons are very intimate. இனிப்புக்காட்ட, inf. A sweet word, pleasant discourse, complimentary, courteous language, இன்சொல். இனியவைகூறல், s. Title of a chapter in Cural on pleasant or courteous speech, குறளினோரதிகாரம். இனியன், s. iṉ (p. 57) adj. Sweet, pleasant, agreeable, இனிமையான. இன்சொல், s. See இனியசொல். இன்சொல்லுவமை, s. [in rhetoric.] A comparison between two things, one of which, though excelling, bears a resemblance to the other, உவமையணியி லொன்று. இன்னலம், s. Delight, merit, virtue, இனியநலம். இன்னிசை, s. Melody, harmony, இன்பமானவோசை. 2. A tune, இராகம். 3. (fig.) A kind of lute with seven strings, ஏழுநரம்புள்ளவீணை. இன்னிசைகாரர், s. Players on the lute, musicians, பாணர். இன்னிசைச்சிந்தியல்வெண்பா, s. The three-lined இன்னிசைவெண்பா, of which the two first have four சீர், the last only three, சிந்தியல்வெண்பாவிரண்டனு ளொன்று. இன்னிசைவெண்பா, s. A species of verse in four lines, of which the first three have each four சீர், and the last line three. இன்னோசை, s. Euphony, இனி யவோசை. 52)

iyai (p. 48) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. [The mere poetic form for இசை.] To join, unite, agree, be proper for, agreeable to &c., பொருந்த. இயைய, inf. Used also as a term of comparison, உவமையுருபு. இயைபு, v. noun. Union, agreement, இசைவு. 2. Fitness, worthiness, &c., for undertaking the study of religion or of a literary work, பொருத்தம். 3. [in poetry.] Constructing verses in such a way that they shall end in any of the consonants, ஞ், ண், ந், ம், ன், ய், ர், ல், வ், ழ், ள்.--One of the வனப்பு, or beauties of comparison, செய்யுள்வனப்பினொன்று. 4. The rhyming of the last feet or letters in the lines, அடிகளினிறுதிாயெழுத்தேனுஞ்சொ ல்லேனுமொத்துவருவது. See தொடை. (p.) இயைபின்மையணி, s. A figure in rhetoric--comparing a thing to itself-as பொதுநீங்குவமை. இயைபுவண்ணம், s. Poetry in which the medial letters abound, ஓர்வண் ணம். இயைபுளன், s. A worthy person, புகழாளன். இயைவு, v. noun. Consent, agreement, பொருத்தம். See இசைவு. 29)

iracam (p. 48) s. Flavor, relish; what is tasteful, agreeable, palatable, delicious; taste in general, good or bad--also the six flavors. (See சுவை.) 2. Sweetness, இனிமை. 3. Sweet juice of fruits, &c., vegetable juice in general, சாறு. 4. Mercury, quicksilver, hydrargyrum, பாதரசம். 5. (p.) One of the juices of the body, சத்ததாதுவினொன்று. (See தாது.) It corresponds more with chyle than any other, but probably it is fanciful. 6. Pepper-water made of several ingredients, மிளகுநீர். 7. [in rhetoric.] The passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry, வீரமுதலியவெண்சுவை. Of these eight are given; viz.: 1. வீரம் or வீரியம், courage. 2. அச்சம், பயம், or பயானகம், fear, terror. 3. இழிப்பு, விபற்சம், குற்சை, அருவரு ப்பு, abominating, loathing at or disgusting. 4. வியப்பு or அற்புதம், wonder, surprise, astonishment. 5. காமம், சிங்காரம், சிருங்காரம், love, sexual love. 6. அவலம் or கருணை, acute sensibility, weakness, tenderness, mercy, pity, clemency. 7. உருத்திரம், கோ பம், இரௌத்திரம், பெருங்கோபம், warlike fury, wrath, displeasure, rage. 8. நகை, பெரு நகை or ஆசியம், laughter, mirth, risibility, great or intense laughter, laughing in contempt. By some, சாந்தம், tranquillity, equanimity, peace, abstraction or the stoicism of the ascetics; and by others வற்சலம், parental tenderness are given as a ninth meaning; இரசம் is added at pleasure with the loss in some cases of its initial-as வீராசம், இழிப்பிரசம், &c. Wils. p. 697. RASA. இரசகந்தாயம், s. Tribute, the fatness of the earth. இரசகந்தாயமாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak pleasingly. இரசகருப்பூரம், s. Muriate of mercury, ஓர்மருந்து. இரசகுண்டு, s. [prop. இரசக்குண் டு.] A globular glass filled with mercury as a decoration at weddings, &c., also as a charm. இரசகுளிகை--இரசமாத்திரை, s. A quick-silver pill employed in medicine, இரசத்தினாற்செய்தமாத்திரை. 2. [in alchemy.] A pill feigned to be used by a class of persons called சித்தர், now in the world of Indra, who thereby perform supernatural actions--as கமனஞ்செய்கை, or passing through the air to any desired place, சித்தர்குளிகை. இரசக்கட்டு, s. Condensed mercury, சூதக்கட்டு. இரசக்கிணறு--இரசக்குழி, s. A pit or mine where quick-silver is obtained. இரசக்குடுக்கை, s. A little bottle of mercury. இரசசிந்தூரம், s. RASAB'HASMAN. இரசபாஷாணம், s. A kind of prepared arsenic. இரசப்பிரீதி--இரசமாதா, s. One of the hundred-and-twenty kinds of arsenic in its natural state. இரசமணி, s. Hard globules of mercury prepared by incantations, &c., and worn as an amulet in order to prevent evil, cure diseases, to promote success in undertakings, &c. இரசமுறிக்க, inf. To prepare mercury for medicine. 2. To carry mercury off from the body. இரசலிங்கம், s. Vermilion, சாதி லிங்கம். 2. A case of mercury for a linga. இரசவாதம்--இரசவித்தை, s. Alchemy--one of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். இரசவாதம்பண்ண, inf. To practise the art of alchemy. இரசவாதி, s. An alchemist. இரசவாழை--இரதவாழை, s. [improp. இதரைவாழை.] A species of plantain, பேயன்வாழை. இரசவைப்பு, s. Any preparation from mercury--as a muriate, sulphate, &c., an amalgam. இரசனை, s. Flavor, deliciousness, sweetness, delicacy, சுவை. 2. The tongue, நாக்கு. 3. Juice, sap, essence, சாறு. இரசாதிபதி--இரசாதிபன், s. [in astrology.] The sun or one of the planets presiding over fruits, vegetables, &c., for the given years, இரசவஸ்துகட்கதி காரியாங்கிரகம். இரசாபாசம், A loss of flavor, or of juice. இரசேந்திரம், s. Of this mode, four classes are given, இராகத்தகுதி, ச. viz.: I. இடம், tunes appropriate to different districts of country--as maritime, agricultural and mountainous, அவ்வத்திணை க்குரியவிராகம். Of these there are five, viz.: 1. குறிஞ்சி. 2. பஞ்சுரம். 3. சாதாரி. 4. மருதம். 5. செவ்வழி. II. செய்யுள், tunes applicable to different kinds of poetry--as to வெண் பா, சங்கராபரணம்; to அகவல், தோடி; to கலிப்பா, பந்துவராளி; to கலித்துறை, பைரவி. III. குணம், tunes suited to peculiar occasions--as நாட்டை, martial music; காம்போதி, சாவேரி, and தன்னியாசி, dancing tunes, or tunes for festive occasions; ஆகரி, கண்டாரவம், நீலாம்புரி, பியாகடம் and புன்னாகவராளி, for condolence. IV. காலம், tunes adapted to seasons--as to the spring, அசாவேரி, &c.; the morning, இந்தோளம், இராமகலி, &c.; noon, சாரங்கம், தே சாட்சரி, &c.; evening, கன்னடம், கலியாணி; night, ஆகரி. Others are applicable to all times. There are thirty-two tunes mentioned; viz.: 1. பைரவி. 2. தேவக்கிரியை. 3. மேகவிரஞ்சி. 4. குறிஞ்சி. 5. பூபாளம். 6. வேளா வளி. 7. மலகரி. 8. பௌளி. 9. சீராகம். 1. இந்தோளம். 11. பல்லதி. 12. சாவேரி. 13. பட மஞ்சரி. 14. தேசி. 15. இலலிதை. 16. தோடி. 17. வசந்தம். 18. இராமக்கிரியை. 19. வராளி. 2. கைசிகம். 21. மாளவி. 22. நாராயணி. 23. குண்டக்கிரியை. 24. கூர்ச்சரி. 25. பங்காளம். 26. தன்னியாசி. 27. காம்போதி. 28. கௌளி. 29. நாட்டை 3. தேசாட்சரி. 31. காந்தாரி. 32. சா ரங்கம். Of these, 1, 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, 25, 29, are male tunes, and the three following each of them respectively are their wives. Of these, 1-5 are appropriated to Brahmans; 9-13 to kings; 17-21 to merchants; 25-29 to tradesmen and laborers. The deity of the 1st is ஈசன்; of the 2d திருமால்; of the 3d சரச்சுவதி; of the 4th இலக்குமி; of the 5th சூரியன்; of the 6th நாரதன்; of the 7th விநாயகன்; and of the 8th தும்புரு வன்--the wives being joined with each. இராகங்கலக்க--இராகங்கலைய, inf. To run into another tune. இராகத்தின்படிபாட, inf. To sing agreeably to the tune. இராகந்தப்ப, inf. To fall out of tune. இராகபரிட்சைக்காரன், s. One skilled in music. இராகப்பயிற்சி, s. The practice of vocal or instrumental music, the knowledge of melody or music in general, இசைபயில்கை. இராகமெடுக்க, inf. To pitch a tune, இராகமாலாபிக்க. இராகம்பாட, inf. To sing. இராகவிராகம், s. Secular passions and pursuits, and the contrary, விருப்பு வெறுப்பு. 2) *
