Desire for wealth, covetousness, பொருளாசை. அத்தோதயம்--அர்த்தோதயம், s. The rising of the sun and moon, in conjunction, at the beginning of which, the sun is in Capricorn on a Sunday in the month of January, and the moon in the 22d asterism, and the 17th யோகம்; deemed a most auspicious moment for religious bathing, alms-giving and other duties. These five things do not occur together oftener than once in sixty years. An important circumstance is the half rising of the sun, with which are connected the four other things abovementioned, ஓர்விசேடநாள். அத்தோதயஸ்நானம், s. அறம்
aṟm (p. 33) --அறன், s. Moral or religious duty, virtue; the performance of good works according to the shasters--including justice, hospitality, liberality, &c., also what is prescribed as the duty to be practised by each particular caste. Compare தருமம். The thirty-two acts of charity are the following; viz.: 1. ஆதுலர்க்குச்சாலை, building houses for the poor. 2. ஓதுவார்க் குணவு, giving maintenance and education. 3. அறுசமயத்தார்க்குண்டி, feeding persons of either of the six religious sects. 4. பசுவுக்கு வாயுறை, feeding cows. 5. சிறைச்சோறு, feeding prisoners. 6. ஐயம், giving alms. 7. தின் பண்டநல்கல், providing for travellers. 8. அறவைச்சோறு, feeding the destitute. 9. மகப் பெறுவித்தல், rendering assistance in childbirth. 1. மகவுவளர்த்தல், nourishing children. 11. மகப்பால்வார்த்தல், giving milk to infants. 12. அறவைப்பிணஞ்சுடுதல், burning or burying the poor. 13. அறவைத்தூரியம், furnishing clothes to the destitute. 14. சுண்ணம், giving chunam to use with betel. 15. நோய்மருந்து, giving medicine to the sick. 16. வண்ணார், paying for washing the clothes of the poor. 17. நாவிதர், the same for shaving. 18. கண்ணாடி, giving a looking glass. 19. காதோலை, giving cadjan or palmyra leaves to women for their ears. 2. கண்மருந்து, giving black paint to women for the eyes. 21. தலைக்கெண்ணெய், giving oil for the head. 22. பெண்போகம், aid to enjoy a woman. 23. பிறர்துயர்காத்தல், redressing injuries. 24. தண்ணீர்ப்பந்தல், keeping water pandals to give drink to the thirsty. 25. மடம், erecting inns or buildings for the reception of Brahmans, pilgrims, &c. 26. தடம், making tanks. 27. சோலை, planting topes, groves, &c. 28. ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, erecting stakes at which cows may rub themselves. 29. விலங்கிற்குணவு, feeding all kinds of animals. 3. ஏறுவிடுதல், giving a bull for covering a cow. 31. விலைகொடுத்துயிர்காத்தல், giving money to save life. 32. கன்னிகாதானம், giving assistance towards marriage. (p.) அறஞ்செயவிரும்பு. Desire to do charity. அறக்காடு, s. A desert place for burning the dead, சுடுகாடு. அறக்கொடியோன், s. God; He whose banner is charity, கடவுள். அறங்கடை--அறன்கடை, s. Sin, what is opposed to virtue; nonconformity to the shasters, பாவம். அறங்கடையிற்செல்லார். They who will not enter in the way of vice. அறச்சாலை, s. An alms-house, a hall or room where the thirty-two acts of charity are practised. அறச்செல்வி--அறத்தின்மூர்த்தி, s. Parvati, பார்வதி, famous for alms-giving. 2. A name of தருமதேவதை. அறத்தின்மைந்தன்--அறன்மகன், s. The elder of the five Pandavas. அறத்துப்பால்--அறப்பால், s. A section of the book குறள், which treats of அறம். அறத்துறுப்பு, s. The attributes or constituent parts of charity or virtue, including dispositions and actions. Eight are given; viz.: 1. ஐயப்படாமை, being void of doubt or scepticism. 2. விருப் பின்மை, freedom from covetousness or of inordinate desire for any supposed good. 3. வெறுப்பின்மை, freedom from disgust. 4. மயக்கமின்மை, being void of perplexity. 5. பழியை நீக்கல், avoiding reproaches, being void of censoriousness. 6. அழிந்தோ ரைநிறுத்தல், relieving the distressed or ruined. 7. அறம்விளக்கல், bringing into light the nature of benefaction and expounding it. 8. பேரன்புடைமை, the possession of abundant love. அறத்தைக்காப்போன், s. The god ஐயன். அறநிலை, s. The practice of virtue, a virtuous state or condition, தருமம். 2. One of the eight kinds of marriage --as பிரமமணம். See மணம். அறநிலைப்பொருள், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the collection of revenues justly. 2. Wealth gotten by continuance in a proper course of duty and by industry. அறநிலையறம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the duty of a king to preserve his subjects from breaking the rules of the respective castes. அறநிலையின்பம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--pleasure from a virtuous course; marrying a virgin of proper age, caste and good manners (including conduct prescribed by the Shasters) and of good disposition. அறநெறி, s. The path of virtue. அறப்புறம், s. A place for the practice of virtuous actions. (See அறச்சாலை.) 2. A hall for learning or reciting the Vedas. அறவர்--அறவோர், s. The virtuous, those celebrated for charity and other good deeds, தருமநெறியோர். 2. Ascetics, துற வோர். 3. Brahmans, பார்ப்பார். 4. Sages, முனிவர். அறவன், s. Buddha, புத்தன். அறவாழி, s. The sea of virtue. அறவாழியந்தணன், s. Siva. 2. Vishnu. 3. Argha. அறவாழியந்தணன்றாள் சேர்ந்தார்க்கல்லாற் பிறவா ழிநீந்தலரிது. It is very difficult to swim and escape from the sea of vice, except for those who worship at the feet of him who is the sea of virtue. அறவாழிவேந்தன், s. God, கட வுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். அறவோன், s. தருமம்
trumm (p. 225) --தர்மம்--தன்மம், s. Justice, right, equity, law, நீதி. 2. Virtue, moral and religious merit according to the Shastras, ஒழுக்கம். 3. Charity, any charitable or meritorious act from which future good is expected --as alms-giving; building or endowing temples, contributing to the support of life, human or brute, or the maintenance of religion, or religious establishments. (See அறம்) (c.) 4. Peculiar or prescribed duty, occupation, &c., according to the different ranks and classes in society--as giving alms, &c., by the house-holder; administering justice, by kings; piety and performing rites by brahmans; courage, bravery in the solider; shaving in the barber, சாதிக்குரிய கருமம். 5. Nature, instinct, characteristic, property or action in animals--as humming in bees, barking in dogs, இயல்பு. 6. Inherent and peculiar qualities in plants, as fragrance in flowers; flavors in fruits, குணம். W. p. 439. DHARMMA.--Note. The negative of the above is அதர்மம், injustice, &c. தருமந்தலைகாக்கும். Uprightness will preserve the head; i. e. the life. தருமகர்த்தா, s. Wardens of a heathen temple. 2. Arbitrators, judges, jurymen. தருமகாரியம், s. A charitable act, subject, affair, &c. 2. (fig.) Marriage by charity. தருமகேத்திரம்--தருமக்ஷேத்திரம், s. A place near Delhi, where the Kurus and Pandavas fought. See குருசேத்திரம். தருமக்கட்டை, s. An orphan, supported by strangers, அநாதப்பிள்ளை. (c.) 2. A rubbing post for cattle, ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி. தருமக்கிழவர், s. Traders of three kinds, the வைசியர் caste; (lit.) guardians of justice. See வைசியர், 3. தருமக்கொடை, s. A donation for a charitable purpose. தருமக்கொள்ளி, appel. n. One who lights a funeral pile in charity. தருமக்கோள்--தருமசாடி, s. Indirect information as to any secret crime. தருமங்களைப்போதிக்க, inf. To teach religious duties. தருமசங்கடம், s. [in casuistry.] Difficulty of distinguishing between two duties, காரியமுட்டுப்பாடு. தருமசங்கிதை, s. Some specific book of the law, ஒர்தருமநூல். தருமசத்திரம், s. A rest-house for travellers. தருமசபை, s. Council of arbitrators. தருமசமுஸ்காரம், s. Burying, or burning the deceased poor, அறவைப்பிணஞ்சுடு தல். தருமசாட்சி, s. King's evidence, witnesses cited by the king. தருமசாதனப்பட்டையம்--தருமசாத னம், s. A deed of endowment inscribed on copper. See சாதனம். தருமசாது, s. A very mild, patient and benevolent person, தருமிஷ்டி. தருமசாத்திரம், s. Code of laws, especially the Smriti; rules of justice; ethics, moral philosophy; jurisprudence, ஸ்மிருதி. See கலைஞானம். தருமசாலி, s. A person famed for charity; [ex சாலி.] தருமசாலை, s. An almonry, or place, where any, or all, of the thirty-two charitable acts are performed. தருமசிந்தை--தருமசிந்தனம், s. A charitable or virtuous disposition, motive, intention, object, &c. தருமசிவாசாரி, s. A name of the gurus of the mercantile caste. தருமசீலன், s. (fem. தருமசீலி.) A charitable person piously disposed. தருமசூட்சுமம், s. A nice and difficult point in pleading. தருமஞ்செய்ய, inf. To do charitable and virtuous acts. தருமதானம், s. Beneficence, charitable gifts. தருமதேவதை, s. The goddess of virtue born from the right breast of Brahma, அம்பாலிகை. 2. The vehicle of Siva in the form of a bull, நந்தி. 3. (fig.) A good woman, உத்தமி.--Note. The goddess is described as placing four feet on the earth in the golden age; three in the next, or silver age; two in the brazen; and only one in the iron age. தருமநடை, s. Moral, religious, virtuous conduct; observing prescribed duties according to one's caste. தருமநாள், s. The third lunar asterism --as பரணி. தருமநியாயம்--தருமநீதி, s. Impartial discussion as given in the code of laws. (c.) தருமநூல், s. Works on law, ethics and jurisprudence, called Smriti; eighteen are in repute (though the சதுரகராதி makes nineteen), named for the most part after their authors. 1. மனு. 2. அத் திரி. 3. ஔரிதம். 4. விட்டுணு. 5. யாஞ்ஞவற் கியம். 6. உசனம். 7. ஆங்கீரசம். 8. யமம். 9. ஆபஸ்தம்பம். 1. சம்வர்த்தம். 11. காத்தி யாயனம். 12. பிரகஸ்பதி. 13. பராசரம். 14. வியாசம். 15. சங்கலிதம். 16. தக்கம். 17. கௌதமம். 18. சாதான்மம். 19. வசிட்டம். Of these, மனு is peculiar to the first age of the world, கிரேதாயுகம்; கௌதமம், to the second, திரேதாயுகம்; சங்கலிதம், to the third, துவாபாயுகம், as well as common to them all; and பராசரம் to the கலியுகம். தருமபத்தினி, s. A virtuous wife, கற் புள்ளமனைவி. தருமபுத்திரன், s. As தருமநந்தனன். See under தருமன். தருமபுருஷன், s. A charitable and pious man. தருமப்பள்ளி, s. A charity school. தருமப்பிணம், s. A corpse buried by public charity. தருமப்பிரபு, s. A man eminent for equity and benevolence. தருமப்பிள்ளை, s. One brought up by public charity, as a mountebank to exhibit before the tribe in which he was reared. (Used at the South. In Madras, நோக்கர்.) தருமப்பெட்டி, s. A charity box. தருமப்போர், s. Combat between two champions of equal powers, with the same kind of weapons, and taking no improper advantage. தருமவட்டி, s. Lawful interest. (c.) தருமவாடி, s. An enclosure from which alms are given. தருமவாட்டி--தருமவதி, s. A charitable female. தருமவாளி--தருமவான்--தருமவந்தன், s. A charitable and pious man. (c.) தருமாசனத்தார், s. Judges. தருமாசனம், s. Seat of Justice. 2. prov. also தருமாசனபூமி.] An endowment of land to a temple. (c.) தருமாதருமம், s. Justice and injustice, virtue and vice, அறமும்மறமும். (c.) தருமாத்துமா, s. As தருமி. தருமி, s. A virtuous man or woman. 2. (திருவிளை.) A celebrated brahman. தருமிஷ்டன்--தருமிஷ்டி, s. A charitable, righteous person. தருமிஷ்டர், s. (Hon.) As தருமிஷ்டன். 2. (R. C. usage.) (plu.) புண்ணியம்
puṇṇiyam (p. 324) s. Virtue, moral, or religious merit, from conformity to the Shastras, அறம். 2. Merit of virtuous actions performed in former births attaching to the soul, and bringing blessings, நல் வினைப்பயன். 3. Purity, holiness, தூய்மை. 4. Charity, good works, நல்வினை. (c.)) W. p. 54. PUN'YA. புண்ணியம்லபிக்கும். Virtue will bring a reward. புண்ணியம், 9. Nine charitable actions to a religious mendicant. See நவபுண் ணியம். புண்ணியம், 7. Seven good qualities and acts: 1. நகங்கிருதி, exemption from pride and self-importance; 2. தானம், bestowing gifts; 3. விரதம், fasting, penance, abstinence; 4. சினேகம், exercise of friendship or kindness; 5. நயபோசனம், hospitality; 6. கமை, patience, forbearance; 7. உற்சாகம், zeal, fortitude. புண்ணியகதை--புண்ணியசரித்திரம், s. Meritorious deeds especially of a former birth, resulting in present good, நல்வினை. புண்ணியகாலம், s. An auspicious time for the performance of religious duties, as the hour of an eclipse, &c. புண்ணியகேத்திரம்--புண்ணியக்ஷேத்தி ரம், s. Sacred land, or Central India, as புண்ணியபூமி. புண்ணியக்கருத்து, s. A virtuous or charitable disposition, தருமசிந்தை. புண்ணியசடம்--புண்ணியசரீரம்--புண் ணியதேகம், s. A meritorious, holy man. [in admiration.] புண்ணியசனேசுவரன், s. Kuvêra குபே ரன்; [ex புண்ணியசனம் et ஈசுவரன்.] புண்ணியசன்மம், s. One born with a virtuous disposition on account of good deeds in former births. புண்ணியசாலி, s. A charitable person. புண்ணியசுரூபி--புண்ணியசொரூபி, s. One remarkable for virtue; (lit.) the image or virtue. புண்ணியசாந்து, s. Cow-dung, சாணம். புண்ணியசேடம், s. Merit attaching to the soul at the expiration of each state of existence, to be enjoyed in other births, நல்லூழின்மீதி. புண்ணியதலம்--புண்ணியஸ்தலம், s. A place of resort for worship. புண்ணியதானம், s. Sacred gifts, made to brahmans, or others on special occasions. புண்ணியதிரணம், s. A sacrificial grass, white Kusa, வெண்டருப்பை; [ex திரணம், grass.] புண்ணியதினம். s. A holy day, adapted to religious duties. புண்ணியதீர்த்தம், s. Sacred bathing, a place for religious bathing. புண்ணியத்தானம்--புண்ணியஸ்தானம், [in astrol.] The ninth from the rising sign at birth. See தானம். 2. As புண்ணி யஸ்தலம். புண்ணியத்தோற்றம், 4. Four kinds of merit, attaching to the soul: 1. தவம், penance, self-mortifications, &c., 2. ஒழுக் கம், good conduct, moral and ceremonial; 3. கொடை, liberality, alms-giving; 4. கல்வி, education. புண்ணியநதி, s. A sacred river, as the Kâvery. புண்ணியபலம்--புண்ணியபலன், s. Fruit of meritorious deeds. புண்ணியபுத்திரன், s. A child of high religious merit. புண்ணியபுருஷன், s. As புண்ணியவா ளன். புண்ணியபூ--புண்ணியபூமி, s. [also திவ் வியபூமி.] The holy land of the Hindus, central Asia, bounded on the north by the Hymalayas, south by the Vindya mountains, and on the east and west by the sea. புண்ணியமுதல்வன்--புண்ணியமூர்த்தி, s. The first in merit--God, கடவுள். 2. Buddha, புத்தன். புண்ணியம்பலித்தல், v. noun. The resulting of merit in earthly prosperity. புண்ணியராத்திரம், s. A propitious night for ceremonies; [ex ராத்திரம்=இராத் திரி.] புண்ணியவதி--புண்ணியவாட்டி, s. A meritorious woman. புண்ணியவாளன்--புண்ணியவான், s. [fem. புண்ணியவாட்டி.] A man of high religious character. புண்ணியன், s. A righteous being, divine or human. 2. Siva, சிவன். 3. Argha of the Jainas, அருகன். புண்ணியாகவாசனம், s. An appeasing or propitious ceremony, a peace-offering, ஓர்சடங்கு. 2. Purification of a house from any ceremonial defilement, ஆசூசநி வாரணம்.--Sans. differs. See W. p. 541. PUN'YAHAVACHANA. புண்ணியாத்துமா, s. A righteous soul, a charitable person, male of female. புண்ணியோதயம், s. Manifestation of meritorious deeds, புண்ணியம்தோன்றுகை. 2)
