அஞ்சனம்
añcaṉam (p. 7) s. Blackness, darkness, black coloring, கறுப்பு. 2. A collyrium or black paint for the eyelids, கண் ணுக்கிடுமை. 3. A black coloring or magic ointment put on the hand, &c. to assist in discovering lost, stolen, or concealed property; a species of magic, சேமப்பொருள் முதலியகாட்டுமை. 4. One of the eight elephants which support the world, being that of வருணன், regent of the west point, மேற்றிசையானை. Wils. p. 14. ANJANA. 5. Medicine for the eye when a person is bitten by a venomous snake, and also for one who has fits, கலிக்கம். 6. A black stone, marble, சலவைக்கல். (p.) அஞ்சனக்கலிக்கம், s. A magic ointment rubbed on the eyes or palms of the hand of one who wishes to discover any thing lost. அஞ்சனக்கல், s. Sulphuret of antimony, a combustible used in fireworks, giving a blue flame. See நிமிளை. (M. Dic.) அஞ்சனக்காரன், s. A soothsayer, conjurer, sorcerer. அஞ்சனக்கோல், s. A paint brush or pencil to blacken the eyelids. அஞ்சனத்திரயம், s. Three species of magical ointments, viz., பூதாஞ்சனம், that which assists in discovering whether a person is possessed or not; சோராஞ் சனம், that which assists in discovering stolen property; and பாதாளாஞ்சனம், that which assists in discovering treasure buried under ground. அஞ்சனபாஷாணம், s. One of the thirty-two kinds of native arsenic. அஞ்சனமெழுத, inf. To paint the eyes. அஞ்சனவண்ணன், s. Vishnu, the blue colored, திருமால். அஞ்சனாவதி, s. The female of the elephant supporting the north-east, or the eighth angle, of the world, வடகீழ்த்தி சையானைக்குப்பெண்யானை. அஞ்சனி, s. A small flower-tree, காயா, Memecylon, L. 2. A grass, நாணற் புல், Saccharum, L. (p.) 39) *
அஞ்சு
añcu (p. 7) s. Five. See ஐந்து. அஞ்சாம்வருணம், s. The fifth caste, Pariahs, &c. அஞ்சாலியிடையர், s. [prop. அஞ் சார இடையர்.] A tribe of cowherds; whose women wear, in their marriage neck jewel, five ornaments, or ஐந்தாலி. அஞ்சாரப்பெட்டி, s. [prop. அஞ்ச றைப்பெட்டி.] A box that has five compartments, one in the middle and four surrounding, made of palmyra leaves or other materials for containing flowers, spices, &c. அஞ்சுருவாணி, s. (as அச்சுருவா ணி.) An iron bolt passing through the five tiers of a car. அஞ்சுமூன்றுமுண்டானாலறியாப்பெண்ணுங் கறி யாக்கும். Even a young girl will be able to make a curry, when she has the following three and five things, viz., புளி, souring; மிளகு, pepper; உப்பு, salt; கடுகு, mustard; and சீரகம், cumin--which are the five; and the three are நீர், water; நெருப்பு; fire; and விறகு, fire-wood--said by an angry husband to his wife when the curry is not good. பூதங்கள் அஞ்சும் அகத்தேங்கும். The five elements will laugh within themselves. (குறள்.) 43)

aṭkkm (p. 7) s. Restraint, repression, compression, அடங்குகை. 2. Subordination, submission, கீழ்ப்படிவு. 3. Restraining the senses, self-control, forbearance, பொறியொ டுக்கம். 4. Continency, command over the appetites, temperance, modesty, chlastity, good behaviour, இச்சையடக்கம். 5. Concealment, sepulture, interment of a dead body, பிரேதமடக்குகை. 6. Retiredness, reservedness silence, taciturnity, மௌனம். 7. Contents of a box, &c., that which is comprehended, அடங்கியது. 8. Contents of a book, &c., epitome, abstract, summary, import, substance, பொழிப்பு. 9. Shrinking, compressing,--as a tortoise its members; reduction, condensation, compression, &c. of the powers of the mind, syncope from snake bite, &c., ஒடுக்கம். 1. [prov.] Fireworks in layers, producing successive discharges, பாணம். 11. Treasure kept in concealment, or laid by unobserved by others, புதைபொருள். 12. Erudition, profound knowledge connected with paucity of words and gravity of manners, மிக்கறிவு; (ex) அடக்கு or அடங்கு. அடக்கமெழும்ப, inf. To revive as from the stupor caused by the bite of a snake, a fit, &c. அடக்கம்பண்ண, inf. To bury, inter, entomb. 53)

Pecuniary aid, பொருளுதவி. அத்தசாமம்--அத்தராத்திரி, s. Midnight. Wils. p. 71. ARDD'HARATRA. அத்தசாமப்பூசை, s. Pooja performed at midnight. See பூசை. அத்தநாரீசுரன், s. Siva, he who is half woman. Wils. p. 71. ARDD'HANARISHA. அத்தமண்டபம், s. The court in a temple next to the sacred shrine. See கருப்பகிரகமண்டபம். அத்தாதுரம், s. Desire for wealth, covetousness, பொருளாசை. அத்தோதயம்--அர்த்தோதயம், s. The rising of the sun and moon, in conjunction, at the beginning of which, the sun is in Capricorn on a Sunday in the month of January, and the moon in the 22d asterism, and the 17th யோகம்; deemed a most auspicious moment for religious bathing, alms-giving and other duties. These five things do not occur together oftener than once in sixty years. An important circumstance is the half rising of the sun, with which are connected the four other things abovementioned, ஓர்விசேடநாள். அத்தோதயஸ்நானம், s. Bathing at the auspicious period of the அத்தோதயம். 24)

One who keeps a secret, one who may be trusted with secrets. அந்தரிந்திரியம், s. The internal senses, of which there are four, as specified under, அந்தக்கரணம். அந்தரியாகம், s. Wils. p. 38. ANTARDD'HANA. அந்தர்ப்புரம், s. A place for kings' wives, the queen's apartments in a palace, zenana, seraglio, women's apartments, அரசன்றேவியிருக்கை. 60)
அன்னம்
aṉṉam (p. 34) s. Boiled rice, food in general, சோறு. Wils. p. 4. ANNA. அன்னக்களை, s. Faintness through hunger; languor on eating too much food when weak. அன்னக்காவடி, s. Boiled rice carried with ceremony under a canopy, &c. to be presented to the idol. 2. Boiled rice begged from house to house, to be distributed to mendicants. அன்னக்கொடி, s. A flag hoisted on a choultry to give notice that rice is distributed gratuitously. அன்னக்கொடை, s. Liberality in giving boiled rice. அன்னசத்திரம்--அன்னசாலை, s. A choultry where boiled rice is distributed gratuitously. அன்னசாரம்--அன்னரசம், s. The essence of food, chyle. Wils. p. 4. ANNARASA. 2. Conjee, rice-gruel, கஞ்சி. அன்னசுத்தி, s. Ghee, நெய். அன்னதாதா--அன்னதாதிரு, s. One who gives food, a charitable person. Wils. p. 4. ANNADATRU. அன்னதானம், s. The giving of boiled rice as alms; [ex தானம்.] Wils. p. 4. ANNADANA. அன்னதானப்பிரபு, s. A very liberal man who gives boiled rice daily, &c. அன்னபானம், s. Food and drink. அன்னபானாதிகள், s. Food, drink, &c. அன்னப்பாகு, s. (Anat.) Chyme. அன்னப்பால், s. The water strained from boiled rice, conjee. அன்னப்பிராசனம், s. The ceremony of feeding a child with rice for the first time--if a boy, on the sixth or any other even month afterwards, as the eighth, tenth, &c.--if a daughter, on any odd month after the sixth. The direction is given in காசிகாண்டம், and is regularly practised by Brahmans, குழ ந்தைக்குமுன்னர்ச்சோறூட்டல். Wils. p. 4. ANNAPRASHANA. அன்னமயகோசம், s. The gross material body, sustained by food--as one of the investitures or supports of any soul, சரீரம். See கோசம். Wils. p. 4. ANNAMAYAKOSHA. அன்னரேகை, s. [in palmistry.] A line on the hand indicating abundance of the means of support to him who has it, கையிரேகையினொன்று. அன்னவஸ்திரம், s. Food and clothing. அன்னவூறல், s. Rice-gruel, or water in which rice has been boiled, கஞ்சி. அன்னாபிடேகம்--அன்னாபிஷேகம், s. Anointing an idol with boiled rice. அன்னாலாத்தி, s. Lamps of boiled rice before an idol, or a new married couple, to dispel the fascination of unlucky eyes. See ஆலாத்தி. 9)

One who does evil to another, an evildoer, துஷ்டன். Wils. p. 42. APAKARIN. அபகீர்த்தி, s. Infamy, disgrace, dishonor, disrepute, கனவீனம். Wils. p. 42. APAKIRTI. அபகீர்த்திபெற்றவன். One who is dishonored. அபக்கியாதி, s. Disrepute, disesteem. See அவக்கியாதி; opp. to பிரக் கியாதி. அபக்கியாதியானகாரியம், s. A shameful, ignominious thing. அபக்கிரோசம், s. Reviling, abusing. Wils. p. 42. APAKROSHA. அபசகுனம், s. A bad omen, துர்க்குறி. அபசத்தம், s. Ungrammatical language, வழூஉமொழி. 2. Vain talk, வீண் பேச்சு. 3. Inauspicious expression, அசு பமொழி. Wils. p. 45. APASHABDA. அபசயம்--அபசெயம், s. Defeat, vanquishment, தோல்வி. அபசயப்பட, inf. To be defeated, தோற்க. See படு, v. அபசரணம், s. Departure, egress, புறப்பாடு. Wils. p. 46. APSARANA. அபசரிதம்--அபசரிதை, s. History of bad transactions, துர்ச்சரித்திரம். 2. Improper conduct, துன்னடை. அபசவ்வியம், s. The right side, வலதுபக்கம். Wils. p. 46. APASAVYA. அபசாரம், s. Incivility, disrespect, affront, irreverence, impropriety, உபசார மின்மை. 2. Non-conformity to the Shasters, wrong conduct, misbehavior, குற் றம்; [ex சர, to move, go.] Wils. p. 42. APACHARA. உபசாரஞ்செய்தவர்க்கபசாரம்பண்ணுகிறது. To return civility with incivility. உமக்கென்னாலென்ன அபசாரம்வந்தது? What injury have I done you? or what reproach have I brought upon you? அபசாரி, s. An impolite man, one who deviates from the Shasters, a bad man, மரியாதையில்லான். Wils. p. 42. APACHARIN. அபச்சாயை--அவச்சாயை, s. A shadowless being, as a deity or celestial being, சாயையற்றது. 2. An unlucky shadow, ஓர்மரணக்குறி. 3. Deduction according to the time of the year from the length of the person's shadow, cast by the sun or moon, in calculating the hour of the day or night, தள்ளுபடிநிழல்; [ex சாயா, shadow.] (p.)
