ācaṉam (p. 36) s. A seat, any thing to sit on--whether a mat placed on the ground or a raised seat, பீடம். 2. A tiger's skin, a plat of sacrificial or other prescribed article on which the worshipper squats, or the more advanced devotee sits for the performance of his worship, புலித் தோன்முதலியவாசனம். 3. uṟcarppiṇi (p. 68) s. A Jaina division of time, a long period described as ten crores of crores of oceans of years; this period alternates with one of similar duration. Wils. p. 144. UTHSARPIN'EE. 2. A period of time symbolized by the waxing of the moon and distinguished by longevity and abundance, opposed to அவசர்ப் பிணி, symbolized by the waning of the moon and distinguished by shortness of life and want, உலகம், வாணாள், போகம்முதலிய வைகளால் வளர்பிறைபோற் பெருகுங்காலம். 24) *

oṉṟu (p. 84) s. One (the numeral), ஒன் றென்னுமெண். 2. One thing, அஃறிணையொரு மை. 3. Union, coalescence, ஐக்கம். 4. In construction, it means either, or--as ஒன் றுதீவினையைவிடு, ஒன்றுஅதின்பயனைநுகர், either abandon your evil deeds, or take the consequences. ஒன்றத்தனைகொடுத்தால்நானிரண்டத்தனைகொடுப் பேன். If he has given once as much, I will give twice. ஒன்றாறுகிறானில்லை. He so wonders that he knows not when to cease extolling. 2. His sorrow, regret, &c. is unremitted. ஒன்றிலிருந்தொன்றிலேபாய்தல். Talking loosely, incoherently, jumping from one thing to another. ஒன்றினுளொன்று. One among another, reciprocally, mutually. ஒன்றுகேள். Listen to a word of advice, hear what I have to say. ஒன்றுக்குமசையான். He is moved by nothing. ஒன்றுமொன்றுமிரண்டென்றுதெரியாதவன். A person so ignorant that he cannot tell that one and one make two. ஒன்றுவிட்டொருநாள். Every other day, alternate days. ஒன்றேயொன்று. One only. ஒன்றோஅவனாலேகேடு. Have I sustained but one loss by him? நான்சொன்னதொன்று, அவன்செய்ததொன்று. I told him one thing and he did another. மனமொன்றுவாக்கொன்று. His profession is one thing and intention another. ஒன்றரை, s. One and a half. ஒன்றன்கூட்டம், s. A collection of similar things, ஒருபொருட்கூட்டம். (p.) ஒன்றன்பால், s. [in grammar.] Neuter singular of the irrational class, அஃறி ணையொருமைப்பால். ஒன்றாய், adv. Together, altogether, ஒன்றாக. ஒன்றாலொன்றும். By any means, யாதொன்றினாலும். ஒன்றாலொன்றுங்குறையில்லை. There is no lack at all--commonly applied to provisions, the country produce, &c. ஒன்றி, s. [vul. ஒண்டி.] One, alone, solitary, lonely (spoken of persons), தனி. ஒன்றிக்காரன்--ஒன்றியாள், s. A bachelor, a widower, a single or lonely person, தனியாள். ஒன்றினமுடித்தறன்னினமுடித்தல், v. noun. [in grammar.] Forming a rule or definition so as to include others, ஒருத்தி. ஒன்றுக்கு. For one thing, viz.: to make water--the common expression among school boys when asking to go out for this purpose. ஒன்றுக்கிருக்க, inf. To sit or squat down or go for one thing, viz.: to make water, நீர்விட. ஒன்றுக்குப்போக, inf. To make water. ஒன்றுக்கொன்று. To or for each other. ஒன்றுக்கொன்றுசரி. They are equal, alike, &c. ஒன்றுக்கொன்றுபேசிக்கொண்டார்கள். [vul.] They have called each other by hard names. ஒன்றுக்கொன்றுவித்தியாசம். Different one from another. ஒன்றுபட, inf. To become reconciled, ஒப்புரவாக. 2. To be united, to coalesce, பொருந்த. ஒன்றுபடுத்த, inf. To bring about a union or acquaintance between persons, ஒருமைப்படுத்த. 2. To reconcile, ஒப் புரவாக்க. ஒன்றுபாதி, s. [prov.] A moiety, a half-commonly of land, அரை. 2. Midnight, நடுச்சாமம். அவன்தன்சரக்கையொன்றுபாதியாகவிற்றுப்போட் டான். He sold his goods at half price. ஒன்றுமண்டடி--ஒன்றுமன்றடி, s. Concord, union, harmony, intimate familiarity. 2. Confusion, want of order or system. ஒன்றுமறியாதவன், s. One who knows nothing. ஒன்றுமறியாதவனுமில்லைஎல்லாமறிந்தவனுமில்லை. None is so ignorant as to know nothing --none so wise as to know every thing. ஒன்றுமற்றவன், s. A useless person, உபயோகமற்றவன். 2. A very poor person, தரித்திரன். ஒன்றுமில்லாமை--ஒன்றுமின்மை, s. Utter destitution, the relinquishing of every thing--as an act of devotion. (அறநெறி.) ஒன்றேகால், s. One and a quarter. ஒன்றொழிபொதுச்சொல், s. [in grammar.] Terms common to both genders, one only of which is understood, the other being excluded by the connexion, இருதிணையாண்பெண்ணுளொன்றனை யொழிக்கும்பொதுச்சொல்--as ஆயிரமக்கள்பொரு தார், a thousand persons fought; i. e. men. 33)

kppu (p. 94) s. A forked branch, கவர்க் கொம்பு. 2. A branch in general, கிளை. 3. A post rather slender, தூண். 4. A composition used for dyeing the hair black, மயிர்க்கூட்டுஞ்சாயம். கப்படிமரம், s. A tree with branches from the root, ஓர்மரம். கப்புக்கால், s. Bandy legs. கப்புக்காலன், s. A bandy-legged man, a crooked-legged man. கப்புக்காலி, s. A bandy-legged woman. கப்புக்குனையறுக்க, inf. To render a piece of colored cloth perfect by substituting proper threads for such as are bad and unfit. கப்புத்தோள், s. Bearing on both shoulders alternately. கப்புநாமம், s. A forked mark on the forehead of a sect of Vishnuites. கப்புவிட, inf. To fork as a branch, ramify, diverge, கிளைவிட. 28)

kẕuttu (p. 98) s. The neck of a person, brute, thing, &c., கண்டம். கழுத்தடி, s. The lower part of the nape of the neck, தோண்மேல். கழுத்தறுக்க, inf. To cut the throat, to server the wind-pipe. முன்விட்டுப்பின்னின்றுகழுத்தறுக்கலாமோ...... Would you bid one take precedence and then cut his throat? ஒருவன்கழுத்திலேகட்டிவிட. To devolve unpleasant consequences on another. 2. To attribute a crime or blame to a person. 3. To impose on another unsaleable goods, or a woman ineligible for marriage. கழுத்திடுகயிறு, s. Halter for a beast. கழுத்திருத்த, inf. To have the neck pressed down with a heavy load. (c.) கழுத்திலேகயிறுபோட, inf. To threaten self-immolation for the purpose of recovering debts, &c. 2. To be very treacherous, insidious, perfidious. (c.). கழுத்துக்குட்டை, s. A neckcloth, a cravat. (c.) கழுத்துக்கொடுக்க, inf. To lay down the neck for another on the block, to subject one's self to inconvenience or danger. 2. To expose one's life by a commission of crime. 3. To submit to the yoke as bullocks. கழுத்துச்சந்து, s. The joint of the neck. கழுத்துச்சுளுக்கு, s. Straining of the ligaments of the neck by violent turning of the head. கழுத்துத்திருக, inf. To wring off the head of a fowl, &c. 2. To throttle, twist the head. கழுத்துநெடியபானை, s. A longnecked pot. கழுத்துப்பட்டிகை, s. A collar, a cape. கழுத்துப்பட்டை, s. The collar of a cloak. கழுத்துப்பருத்திருக்க, inf. To have a thick neck. கழுத்துப்பொருத்தம், s. One of the ten பொருத்தம் for marriage, மணப்பொருத்தம் பத்திலோன்று. (c.) கழுத்துமுறிக்க--கழுத்தைமுறிக்க, inf. To break the neck--spoken of the power, &c., of demons. வேண்டாமென்றுகழுத்தைமுறிக்கிறான். He absolutely refuses, it is very repugnant to his feelings, &c. கழுத்துவெட்டி, s. A cut-throat, a betrayer, an assassin. (c.) கழுத்தூட்டி, s. The throat. (p.) கழுத்தேறுதண்டம், s. Aggravated or very heavy punishment. கழுத்தைநெரிக்க, inf. To throttle one. கட்டுக்கழுத்தி, s. A married woman. 81)

kvṭu (p. 97) s. A branch of a tree, மரக் கிளை. 2. A forked branch, கவர்க்கோடு, 3. A rope for the neck of beasts, a halter, கழுத்திடுகயிறு. 4. An elephant rope,யானை கட்டுங்கயிறு. (p.) 5. [prov.] The opening of the thighs whether extended or not, தொ டைச்சந்து. 6. [vul.] Fraud, deceit, கபடம். 7. A stride, the length of a step, a pace, இடப்படி. அவன்கவட்டிலேநுழைந்தான். He passed between the extended legs of the other; i. e. he has submitted to him. கவடுவிட, inf. To grow forked as a branch. கவடுவைக்க, inf. [prov.] To pace, straddle, stride. கவடுள்ளமனம், s. A cunning, deceitful mind. கவட்டடி, s. [prov.] A stride, a pace. கவட்டுக்காலன், s. A bandy-legged person, a straddler, விரிந்தகாலன். கவட்டுநெஞ்சன், s. A cunning, artful, sly, designing person, கபடன். 6)

kātaikrppu (p. 104) s. A stanza so composed, that, beginning with the first letter of the last word, and reading backwards every alternate letter only, a new stanza is formed, மிறைக்கவியிலொன்று. (p.) 26)

kāriym (p. 104) s. Affair, thing, business, concern, matter, subject, occurrence, circumstance, incident, topic, event, transaction, கருமம். 2. An action, operation, a deed, process, செய்கை. 3. Object, purpose, design, விஷயம். 4. Effect, result, product, issue,--as apposed to காரணம், பயன். Wils. p. 215. KARYYA. 5. Expediency, fitness, profitableness, இலாபம். காரியகருமமில்லாதவன். One not concerned about any thing, not troubled with business. அதுனக்குக்காரியமல்ல, நீயேன்பேசுகிறாய். You have nothing to so with it, why do you speak? அதுகாரியமல்ல, இதுவே உனக்குக் காரியம். That is not expedient, but this will be profitable for you. காரணகாரியத்தைக்காட்டுகிறது. The effect shows or implies the cause. காரியகேவலம், s. Transient unconsciousness of the living soul during its station in any of the five அவஸ்தை. காரியசகலம், s. Imperfect knowledge of the living soul during its station in any of the five அவஸ்தை. காரியசுத்தம், s. Clear and distinct perception of the living soul during its station in any of the five அவஸ்தை. காரியகர்த்தா, s. A maker, an accomplisher--as in educing, sustaining and destroying worlds, &c. 2. An agent, a superintendent. காரியகாரன், s. An agent, a commissioner, காரியம்பார்க்கிறவன். 2. An attorney, an advocate, காரியதுரந்தரன். 3. A man of business, one clever in business, வேலை யிலே சாதுரியன். காரியகுரு, s. A guru who seeks his own interest, whose living is his chief object-opposed to காரணகுரு. காரியக்கெட்டி, s. A man successful in his undertakings, adopting proper means; a business-like man. காரியசாதகம், s. Perseverance in an undertaking, காரியத்தில்முயலுகை. 2. Accomplishing an object, காரியசித்தி. Will the faltering words of an old man be agreeable to an organist? கிண்ணாரங்கொட்ட--கிண்ணாரம்வாசிக்க, inf. To play on the organ; to play on the fiddle. 50)

kiṟukku (p. 112) கிறேன், கிறுக்கினேன், வேன், கிறு க்க, v. a. To efface, blot out, obliterate, cancel, கிறுக்கித்தள்ள. 2. To scribble, to write with an iron pen, to grave, எழுத. இதையெழுதினதில்லை கிறுக்கினான். He has not written this well, he has scribbled. ஒருதுண்டுகிறுக்கியனுப்பிவிடும். Drop a line to him; scribble a line to him. கிறுக்கு, v. noun. Blotting, cancelling, obliteration, கிறுக்கித்தள்ளுகை. 2. A letter, character, or writing, எழுத்து. கிறுக்காயிருக்க, inf. kucai (p. 115) s. A bridle, கடிவாளம். 2. A horse's head-stall, a halter, குதிரைகட்டுங் கயிறு. 3. A horse's mane, குதிரையின்பிடர்மயிர். 4. Sacrificial grass, தருப்பை. (See குசம்.) 5. kumpakaṉṉaṉ (p. 123) --கும்பகர்ணன், s. The gigantic brother of Rávan'a, whose ears were like a jar. He is said to have performed austerities to obtain immortality, நித்தியத்துவம்; but, under the evil influence of the supernals, who dreaded his power, he was made to falter in his words and to say, நித்திராத்துவம் (sleepiness), and he was thenceforward given up to sleep. koṉṉu (p. 147) கிறேன்,கொன்னினேன், வேன், கொன்ன, v. n. [vul. probably a corruption of கொஞ்சு, v.] To speak indistinctly, to stammer, articulate imperfectly, கொன்னையாகப்பேச. Used commonly in the gerundial form--as கொன்னிக்கொன் னிப்பேசுகிறான், he stammers, speaks indistinctly, falters in his words. கொன்னை, v. noun. [vul. prov.] Indistinct speaking, stammering, lisping, imperfect articulation, சொற்றிருந்தாமை. கொன்னைவாயன், s. [fem. கொன்னைவா ய்ச்சி.] One who speaks indistinctly, a stammerer. 43)

kōrōcaṉai (p. 151) s. [improp. கோரோச னம்.] Cow-bezoar, a dark, yellow or biliary calculus found in the stomach of the cow, employed medically, and regarded as an antiphlegmatic, stimulant, alterative, tonic, &c. It is given in small quantity in a pulverized state to new-born infants, to remove phlegm and other obstructions, to rectify irregularities, &c., ஓர்மருந்து. W. p. 31. GOROCHANA. 18)
