aṭṭam (p. 9) --அஷ்டம், s. Eight, எட்டு. (p.) Wils. p. 92. ASHTAN. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of feet with which the invocation of a poem may begin; four indicative of good, and four of evil. See கணம். அஷ்டகம், s. A medicine composed of eight metals: 1. பொன், gold. 2. வெள்ளி, silver. 3. செம்பு, copper. 4. இரும்பு, iron. 5. வெண்கலம், white copper. 6. தரா, brass. 7. வங்கம், lead. 8. துத்தநாகம், zinc, with different salts and vegetable juices; the whole prepared by fire and reduced to powder to be used in various diseases. அஷ்டவசுக்கள், s. See சாவி. நீர்ச்சிக்கு, s. Strangury as நீரடைப்பு. நீர்ச்சிரங்கு, s. [prov. com. சேற்றுப்புண்.] Soreness between the toes, caused by walking on muddy ground. நீர்ச்சின்னி, s. A plant, Urtica glomerata, L. நீர்ச்சிறுப்பு, v. noun. Scanty discharge of urine, நீரருகல். நீர்ச்சீலை, s. A piece of cloth for covering the privities in bathing. நீர்ச்சுண்டி, s. One of the class of sensitive plants. See சுண்டி. நீர்ச்சுழல்--நீர்ச்சுழி, s. Eddy, whirlpool, vortex, gulph. நீர்ச்சுனை, s. Water-pools, natural wells, holes made for getting water. நீர்ச்சூலை, s. Hydrocele, commonly அண்டவாயு. நீர்ச்செம்பை, s. A tree, Coronilla aculiata, L. See செம்பை. நீர்ச்செறிவு, s. A collection, expanse or sheet of water as நீர்ப்பாப்பு. நீர்ச்சேம்பு, s. A plant. See சேம்பு. நீர்ச்சோறு, s. [also பழஞ்சோறு.] Boiled rice mixed with water and kept over night to be eaten in the morning. நீர்தூவுந்துருத்தி, s. [also நீர்சிதறுந்துருத் தி.] A squirt-gun, or instrument for throwing water. நீர்த்தாகம், s. Thirst, as தண்ணீர்த்தா கம். நீர்த்தாரை, s. Jet or spout of water, a conduit, &c., as சலதாரை. 2. Rainy streaks in the clouds, or from the sun after setting. See மழைத்தாரை. 3. [modeste.] membrum virile. நீர்த்தானம், s. The fourth from the rising sign, உதயத்திற்குநாலாமிடம். நீர்த்திவலை--நீர்த்துளி, s. A water drop, globule of water. நீர்த்துறை, s. [also தண்ணீர்த்துறை.] The entrance to a tank, river, &c., See துறை. நீர்த்தூம்பு, s. A spout, மதகு. நீர்நாய், s. The sea-dog. See நாய். நீர்நாள், s. The twentieth lunar asterism, பூராடம். A water vessel used by asceties, கமண்டலம். (p.) நீர்ப்பகண்டை, s. A species of the ப கண்டை plant, Stemodia aquatica. Willd. நீர்ப்பஞ்சு, s. A sponge, கடற்காளான். நீர்ப்படுவன், appel. n. A kind of disease, as நீர்ப்பாடு. நீர்ப்பரப்பு, v. noun. An expanse or sheet of water, நீர்விரிவு. நீர்ப்பறவை, s. Any kind of water-bird. நீர்ப்பனை, s. A kind of plant, புல்லா மணக்கு, Melanthium Indica. நீர்ப்பாக்கு, s. Areca-nut steeped in water. See ஊறற்பாக்கு. நீர்ப்பாடு, v. noun. Violent diarrh&oe;a, sudden and often fatal, விஷக்கிராணி. 2. Diabetes, especially of women, நீரழிவு. 3. Drought, want of rain, நீர்க்குறைவு. (Beschi.) நீர்ப்பாடுமெய்யானாற்கௌபீனந்தாங்குமோ. Discharge of serum from a sore or of water from the eyes, mucus from the nose, &c., சீப்பாய்தல். நீர்ப்பாய்ச்சலானநாடு. A country abounding with mountain streams, rivers, rivulets, &c. நீர்ப்பாய்ச்சுமானியம், s. Land held free of tax, in whole or in part, irrigated from a public reservoir. [ Gov. usage.] நீர்ப்பிடி-நீர்ப்பிடிப்பு, v. noun. Quantity of water. 2. Watery humors in the body, juiciness of some kinds of fruit or vegetables. See தண்ணீர்ப்பிடி. நீர்ப்பிரமியம், s. Strangury, especially of men. See நீர்ப்பாடு. நீர்ப்பிளவை, s. A kind of ulcer. See பிளவை. நீர்ப்பீனசம், s. A kind of inflammation in the head, with offensive discharges of mucus. See பீனசம். நீர்ப்படையன், s. A poisonous kind of water-snake, ஓர்பாம்பு. நீர்ப்பூ, s. One of the four kinds of flowers, a water-flower, நால்வகைபபூவி னொன்று. நீர்ப்பூலா--நீர்ப்பூல், s. A kind of shrub, a species of the பூல், Phyllanthus multiflorus. Willd. நீர்ப்பெருக்கு, v. noun Flow of tide, சலப்பெருக்கு. நீர்மட்டம், s. Water-level. நீர்மறிப்பு, v. noun. Stoppage of urine, நீரடைப்பு. நீர்மாங்காய், s. Managoes soaked in water, and dried, forming a kind of pickle, மாங்காயடைகாய். நீர்மீட்டான்--நீர்விட்டான், appel. n. A kind of medicinal creeper. See தண்ணீர் விட்டான். நீர்முகம், s. A ford, a place in a river for bathing, getting water, &c., இறங்கு துறை. 2. Head of the tide or current at the mouth of a river, where it flows into the sea, நீர்ப்பெருக்கின்முனை. (p.) நீர்முட்ட, inf. To make water (urine) சிறுநீர்முட்ட. (School usage.) 2. To be short of water. நீர்முட்டுகிறகண்கள். Watery eyes. நீர்முள்ளி, s. One of the முள்ளி plants, Barleria longifolia. L. நீர்மேலெழுத்து, s. An inscription on the water. See எழுத்து. நீர்மேல்நெருப்பு, s. A kind of herb, cool to the touch, but causing blisters afterwards, கல்லுருவி, Ammonia debilis, also used figuratively to persons. நீர்மோர், s. Thin watery butter-milk, with other ingredients, used as a beverage. நீர்வஞ்சி, s. A kind of ratan, ஓர்வகை ப்பிரம்பு. நீர்வண்டு, s. A water-fly. நீர்வல்லி, s. The betel-creeper, வெற் றிலைக்கொடி. நீர்வழுக்கை, s. A kind of water-plant, ஓர்நீர்ப்பூடு, Myriophyllum foliosum, L. நீர்வளம், s. Abundance of water, நீர் நிறைவு. நீர்வள்ளி, s. A medicinal creeper, தண் நீர்மீட்டான். 2. As நீர்வல்லி. நீர்வற்ற, inf. To dry up, as water, &c. நீர்வற்றம், v. noun. Ebb of tide. நீர்வற்றல், s. Any thing in which the juice is evaporated by drying, சாரம்வற்றி யது. நீர்வாத்து, s. A kind of fen-duck, or water-bird, ஓர்தாரா, Anas boschos. நீர்வாரம், s. Rice that grows by tanks or in marshy ground, குளநெல். Compare நீவாரம். நீர்வாழுஞ்சாதி, s. Aquatic creatures, நீர்வாழ்வன. 2. To become watery, thin, &c., by keeping too long, by fermentation, as honey, நீர்த்துப்போக. நீர்விழ, inf. virāṭṭu (p. 397) s. The first progeny of Brahma, who, having divided himself into male and female, produced Viraj from the female; Viraj by himself produced the first Menu, or Swayamb'huva, who was the progenitor of the Prajapatis, and the secondary framer of the visible world. According to some, Viraj is the same as Para-Brahma. the primary cause. See W. p. 781. VIRAJ. Others consider him to be the same as Parama-purusha, or Vishnu; who, after being formed, offered up himself in sacrifice. See Kennedy's An. 2.
