An armory, arsenal. ஆயுதந்தரிக்க, inf. To bear arms, to be armed. ஆயுதபரிக்கை--ஆயுதபரிட்சை-ஆயுதப்பயிற்சி, s. Military exercise, the art of fencing, &c. ஆயுதபாணி, s. An armed man, one under arms. ūñcl (p. 69) s. A swing, ஊசல். (c.) ஊஞ்சலாட, inf. to swing, to be swung. ஊஞ்சலாட்டு, v. noun. Swinging the images of the gods and goddesses-a ceremony at the close of the annual festival; also swinging the bridegroom and bride the day after the marriage. 39)

eẕutu (p. 75) கிறேன், எழுதினேன், வேன், எழுத, v. a. To write, paint, draw, mark, stain, trace (letters, &c.), inscribe, வரைய. 2. To foreordain, to predestine. This verb is soused from the notion that each one's fate is written by Brahma in the skull, தலையிலெழுத. 3. To write composition, draw up in writing, வசனாதிகளெழுத. 4. To engrave, சித்திரமெழுத. எழுதக்கைதிரும்பவில்லை. The hand is not yet trained. எட்கிடைநெற்கிடைவிட்டெழுத. To write leaving the space of a sesamum seed between the letters, and of a grain of rice between the lines--the order to be observed in writing. எழுதாக்கிளவி--எழுதாமறை, s. The vedas, lit. unwritten works--an appellation adopted with reference to their meaning being handed down by oral explanation and not written, or to the accent, pronunciation, &c., which cannot be written, வேதம். எழுதிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To recount,register, write and keep for a memorandum, &c., to write and leave behind for the use of others. எழுதினஉடன்படிக்கை--எழுதின வொப்பாசாரம், s. Written contract. எழுதுகோல், s. A writing reed, எழுதுங்கோல். 2. A painter's brush or pencil, தூரியக்கோல். எழுதுபடம், s. A picture, கிழி. மேற்பாடம்பார்த்தெழுதுதல், v. noun. Copying from a written book. பெயர்த்தெழுத, inf. To copy, to transcribe. குறிப்பெழுத, inf. To note down the time, &c. of the birth of a child. திருத்தமாயெழுத, inf. To write correctly. சரமகவியெழுத, inf. [prov.] To write a stanza, commemorative of the death of an ancestor, or other near relative, mentioning the day, hour, &c. of the moon, as a memorandum for ascertaining the time to perform the annual funeral rites. மறுமொழியெழுத--பதிலெழுத, inf. kṟkiccā (p. 102) s. Equation for the second inequality of a planet when its position is within six signs of aries. 2. Table of these equations, the annual parallax of the orbits of planets, given when their place in the heavens is from cancer to capricornus, கற்கிசீக்கரபரிதி; [ex கற்கி, cancer, சா, sign], meaning the signs of commutation from cancer to capricornus, which is equal to the annual parallax. 17)

To set up stones to show the limits of provinces, sometimes as a menace to an invading foe. 2. To set up a stone, or build a monument of some deceased person. கல்நாதம்--கல்வீரியம்--கல்வேகம், s. Green vitriol, அன்னபேதி. கல்நார்--கல்லின்காரம்--கற்சத்து-கற்சவளை s. A kind of fossil, an incombustible substance, asbestos--used for decayed gums, &c., ஓர்மருந்து. கல்நெஞ்சு, s. A stony heart, a hard heart, வன்்னெஞ்சு. அவன்நெஞ்சுகல்லாய்ப்போயிற்று. His heart is petrified. கல்நெஞ்சன்--கல்நெஞ்சுள்ளவன், s. A hard hearted, unfeeling, or unrelenting person. கல்மடி, s. [vul.] A hard udder of a cow, காய்மடி. கல்மதம்--கன்மதம், s. Rock alum-one of the one hundred and twenty kinds of minerals. கல்மலை--கன்மலை, s. A rock, கல் வெற்பு, Alum plumosum. கல்மழை--கல்மாரி--கன்மழை, s. Hail, a shower of hailstones. கல்முதிரை, s. The tree yielding satin wood, Chloroxylon swietenia. கல்மொந்தன், s. A species of plantain, ஓர்வாழை. கல்லகம், s. A rocky mountain, மலை. கல்லக்காரம், s. Candied molasses, candy, பனங்கற்கண்டு. கல்லக்காரம்விளைய, inf. To become candied-as the molasses of sweet toddy. கல்லங்காய், s. A fruit which becomes as hard as a stone, கற்காய். கல்லடிக்க, inf. To hew or cut stone. 2. To strike the foot against a stone. கல்லடிமூலம், s. A kind of arsenic, ஓர்பாஷாணம். கல்லடைப்பு, s. Retention of urine by gravel, நீரடைக்குமோர்நோய், Calculus. கல்லளை--கல்வளை, s. A cleft or chasm in a rock or mountain. மலைமுழைஞ்சு. கல்லறுக்க, inf. To make bricks, commonly, கல்லரிய. கல்லறை, s. A vault, a cave hewn out in a rock, sepulchre, a tomb, பிரேதக் குழி. 2. A cavern, குகை. 3. A room with a mortar or stone roof and floor, கல்வீடு. கல்லாங்காசு, s. A small round tile with which children play. கல்லாசாரி, s. A master-mason, an architect, கற்றச்சரின்தலைவன். கல்லிலேநாருரிக்க, inf. To strip fibres from a stone; i. e. to seek for what is unattainable or impossible--an absurdity. 2. To obtain by very great labor. கல்லிழைக்க, inf. To set precious stones, கற்பதிக்க. கல்லீயம், s. A hard kind of lead, pewter, வன்மையானஈயம். கல்லுக்காரர், s. Lapidaries, இரத் தினம்விற்போர். கல்லுக்குத்த, inf. [prov.] To frustrate a business by accusations or underhand representation, காரியத்தைத்தடைசெய்ய. கல்லுதிரி, s. A species of small pox with hard pustules, ஓரம்மை. (See உதிரி.) 2. [prov.] A kind of rice, ஓர்நெல். கல்லுத்தீர, inf. To cut and polish gems. கல்வெட்ட. கல்லுத்தூக்க, inf. To take up the anchor of a dhoney, to weigh anchor, நங் கூரந்தூக்க.--Note. Small boats and catamarans have frequently a stone for an anchor, and hence the preceding form. கல்லுப்பார், s. A rocky stratum, reefs, கற்பார். கல்லுப்பாவ--கற்பாவ, inf. To pave, to floor with stone, flag. கல்லுப்பாவினதரை, s. A pavement, stone floor. கல்லுப்பு, s. A kind of mineral salt, salt in lumps, ஓருப்பு. கல்லுப்பொளிய--கற்பொளிய, inf. [com.] To hew and pick grind stones, கல்லுக்கொத்த. கல்லுப்பொறுக்கி--கற்பொறுக்கி, s. A bird that eats little stones, தூதுணு ம்புறா. கல்லுப்போட, inf. To cast a stoneanchor, நங்கூரம்போட. 2. (fig.) To frustrate a business by accusations or under-hand representations, காரியத்தைத்தடை செய்ய. கல்லுயர்தோள், s. A mountain-like shoulder. கல்லுரல், s. A stone-mortar, கல் லினாற்செய்யப்பட்டவுரல். கல்லுவைக்க, inf. [prov.] To cast anchor. (See கல்லுப்போட.) 2. To apply snake-stones to venomous bites with incantations, &c., விஷக்கல்வைக்க. 3. To set a stone on the forehead as a punishment, the head being bent backward, and the face set toward the sun, நெற்றியிற் கல்லுவைக்க. 4. To crect a stone at a funeral ceremony (a சாச்சடங்கு, personifying a deceased ancestor, whose spirit is supposed to enter and remain in it while the ceremonies are performed. A deification of the soul is supposed to take place and the stone is made an object of worship, சிலைதாபிக்க. கல்லுவைத்துப்பார்க்க, inf. To apply snake-stones to venomous bites with enchantment, incantations, &c. கல்லுளி, s. A stone-cutter's chisel, கல்வெட்டுமுளி. கல்லுளிச்சித்தர், s. A sort of mendicants who carry chains in their hands. கல்லுளித்தச்சன், s. A stone-cutter. கல்லுளியுருக்கு, s. Steel of a very hard kind used for cutting stone. கல்லூசி, s. A medicinal stone. கல்லூற்று, s. A spring in a rocky soil, in wells, கல்லூறுநீரூற்று. கல்லூற்றுத்தண்ணீர், s. Water springing from a rock. கல்லெடுப்பு, v. noun. The bearing of a funeral stone. கல்லெரிப்பு--கல்லெரிப்புமேகம், s. Incontinence of urine, நீர்ச்சுருக்குநோய். (Mat. Ind.) கல்லெறி, v. noun. The throwing of a stone, கல்லெறிகை. 2. s. The distance of a stone's throw, கல்லெறிதூரம். 3. A sling, கவண். கல்லெறிய, inf. To throw or fling a stone, to pelt with stones. கல்லெறிதூரம், s. The distance of a stone's throw. கல்லைநீராக்கி, s. A kind of ore, மாமிசபேதி. கல்லொட்டி, s. A snail, நத்தை, (M. Dic.) கல்வீடு, s. A stone of brick-built house. கல்வெட்டி, s. A stone-cutter, a lapidary. கல்வெட்டுபவன். கல்வெட்டு, s. A stone cutting, engraving in stones, சிலாசாதனம். 2. A stanza, foretelling or commemorating some important event; such stanzas appear sometimes to have been engraven in stone (whence the name), a recorded prediction, அழியாதசொல். 3. [prov.] A stanza commemorative of the death of an ancestor, mentioning the day and hour of the moon when it happened, kept by the descendants to assist in determining the precise time for the annual funeral rites, புகழ்ச்சிசெய்யுள். 4. [prov.] The mane of a well-known stanza, believed to have been written during the period of a Tamil Dynasty in Ceylon, foretelling, as it is interpreted, a succession of different foreign powers, and the final restoration of native rule, in those regions. It is as follows: முன்னைக்குளக்கோட்டன்மூட்டுந்திருப்பணியைப்பின்னைப்பரங்கிபிரிப்பனே--மன்னா கேள்--பூனைக் கண்செங்கண்புகைக்கண்ணனாண்டபின்பு--மரனே வடுகாய்வரும். 'The sacred edifices which the king Koolakottan reared, the Portuguese will demolish, listen O king-after the reign of the cat-eyed, the redeyed and the smoke-eyed, O thou deereyed, the Vaduca will succeed.' There is a different version of the last line, but it does not affect the general meaning-the smoke-eyed are said to be the present dominant power. கல்வெள்ளி, s. A species of wild pigeon--as கற்பொறுக்கிப்புறா. கற்சட்டி, s. A stone-pot, கல்லி னாற்செய்தசட்டி. கற்சரீரம், s. A hard, stone-like body, whether of men or brutes,வன் மையானவுடல். கற்சாகம், s. Emerald, மரகதம். (M. Dic) கற்சாடி, s. A stone-jar, a stonepitcher, கல்லினாற்செய்தசாடி. கற்சிற்பர், s. Stone masons, bricklayers, stone-cutters, &c., கற்றச்சர். See சிற்பர். கற்சுண்ணாம்பு, s. Stone-lime. கற்சுவர், s. A brick or stone-wall, கல்லினாற்செய்தசுவர். கற்படி, s. A stone-step, or flight of stone-steps. கல்லினாற்செய்தபடி. கற்படுக்க, inf. To pave, கற்பதிக்க. கற்படை--கற்புழை, s. A secret way into a fort, a sally-port, கோட்டையிற் கள்ளவழி. கற்பதிக்க, inf. To pave, கல்லுப் படுக்க. 2. To set precious stones, enchase, மணிபதிக்க. கற்பதித்தவிடம்--கற்படுத்ததரை, s. To derange, disturb, disorganize; to scatter, put in disorder, தாறுமாறாக்க. 4. To destroy, ruin, violate--as chastity, &c., கெடுக்க. 5. To dishearten, discourage, disconcert, தைரியவீனப்படுத்த. 6. To disappoint, மனதைக்கலைக்க. 7. To shake, to agitate, அசைக்க. குலைத்துக்கட்ட, s. To untie the hair, &c., and tie again. 2. cantāṉam (p. 159) s. Offspring, progeny, issue, சந்ததி. 2. Race, descent, lineage, family, pedigree, line, வமிசம். (c.) 3. Series, consecutive series, regular succession, concatenation, தொடர்பு. 4. Succession of an order--as of a priesthood, &c., குரு பாரம்பரை. 5. One of the five trees of Swerga, that yield whatever is desired, ஐந்தருவிலொன்று. W. p. 888. SANTANA. சந்தானகுரு, s. The family Guru. சந்தானந்தழைக்க, inf. To increase and prosper as a family, used in compliment, benediction, &c., மங்கலமொழி. சந்தானபாரம்பரை, s. Genealogy, family, lineage. சந்தானமற்றவன், s. A man without issue, one who has no son to perform the monthly and annual funeral rites; which is a thing greatly deplored, and evidence of sins in the present or some former birth. A term of reproach. சந்தானலட்சுமி, s. The gift of a numerous offspring. (c.) சந்தானவிரதம், s. A fast observed to obtain offspring. சந்தானவழி, s. Lineage either ascending or descending. caṉṉiyācam (p. 174) s. Asceticism, abandonment of all worldly possessions and attachments, being the highest and last of the four brahmanical states. See ஆச் சிரமம். 2. Relinquishment, renunciation, துறவு; [ex சம், entirely, et நியாசம், casting away.] W. p. 891. SANNYASA. சன்னியாசந்தரிக்க, inf. To assume the state and garb of the சன்னியாசி. சன்னியாசமார்க்கம், s. The order of சன்னியாசி. 2. The perpetual bachelorhood of a person of good morals. சன்னியாசமுத்திரை, s. The distinctive marks of the சன்னியாசி, viz.: the staff, the waterpot, an unshaven beard, dishevelied locks, ochred clothes, &c. *சா, A compound letter composed of ச் and ஆ. 2. s. [ex Sa. Jya, to decay.] Death, mortality, மரணம். 3. Devil, பேய். 4. [in astron.] The chord of an arc; but commonly used for அர்த்தச்சா--the sine of an arc. 5. An equation of the centre--as மந்தச்சா. 6. The annual parallax, of a planet. See கற்கிச்சா and மகரச்சா. W. p. 355. JYA. சாக்காடு, s. Mortality, death, மரணம்; [ex காடு, a verbal affix.] சாக்காட்ட--சாக்காக்க, inf. [prov.] To wait on the dying, affording aid, performing appropriate ceremonies, &c. சாக்குருவி--சாகுருவி, s. A night-bird, sometimes a screech owl, whose hoot is supposed to portend death. சாக்குறி, s. Omens or presages of death. சாச்சடங்கு, s. Funeral ceremonies performed within the first week, especially, cooking and taking congy on the third day, and rice on the eighth.--Note. In some places food is sent by the relatives for three days. சாசங்காரம், s. The completing of an equation. சாபலம், s. [in astron.] Equation to the centre for any given time. சாபறை--சாப்பறை, s. A kind of drum for funerals. சாபிள்ளை, s. A still-born child. (c.) சாமுகுர்த்தம், s. [in astrol.] The முகு ர்த்தம் time, when several of the planets are in unfavorable situations. சாமூஞ்சி, s. A dismal, ghastly countenance, a death-like look. சாமூஞ்சிபட, inf. To be ghastly, as the face of a sick person. சாமேளம், s. A funeral-drum; the mode of beating a drum for a funeral. சாவறுதி, s. The point of death, the last extremity. 2. [prov.] Slightness, want of force and vigour; [ex அறுதி.] சன்னியாசம்பண்ண, inf. To renounce social or secular life for the wandering life of the ascetic. 2. To abandon earthly associations, worldliness, secularity, &c. சமுசாரசன்னியாசம், s. Celibacy. See under சமுசாரம். 3) *

Mitigating the evil influence of planets, appeasing malignant demons, &c., in which sacrificial offerings by fire form a principal part, கழிப்பு. 3. Remedy, antidote, பரிகாரம். (c.) 4. To allay, to mitigate, alleviate, தணிக்க. தாகசாந்தி, s. Allaying thirst. (Colloq.) வியாதிசாந்தி, s. The removal of disease, recovery of health. வாஸ்துசாந்தி, s. சிராத்தம்
cirāttam (p. 185) --சிரார்த்தம், s. Any annual funeral rite performed under the direction of the Purohita or household brahman, for a deceased parent, or other ancestor; when balls of rice are set for the manes and a variety of presents are made to the officiating Brahmans, திவ சம். W. p. 862. S'RADDHA. சிராத்தங்கொடுக்க, inf. To give presents as part of the Sraddha rite. சிராத்தபுண்ணியகாலம், s. The sacred time of the Sraddha, when to bestow gifts is very meritorious. சிராத்தம்பண்ண, inf. To perform the Sraddha rite, as the chief descendant of a family, or as the officiating brahman. அன்னச்சிராத்தம், s. The Sraddha as practised by brahmans--when cooked rice is distributed. ஆமச்சிராத்தம், s. Undressed food presented to brahmans in this rite. See under ஆமம். உங்களப்பன்சிராத்தமாமுழுகிப்போகும். cīkkiram (p. 190) s. W. p. 847. SEEGHRA. Haste, speed, quickness, celerity, velocity, விரைவு. 2. Expertness, expeditiousness, dispatch, கைச்சுறுக்கு. 3. (fig.) Intensity, severity, acuteness, rapidity--as of a disease; violence of a medicine, &c., மருந்துவீறு. 4. (fig.) [vul.] Anger, irritability, impetuosity, கோ பம். 5. [prov.] Acrimoniousness, pungency--as of tobacco, spirituous liquors, &c., உறைப்பு. 6. [in astron.] Annual parallax or elongation, as சீக்கிரபரிதி. சீக்கிரத்துக்கு, adv. Hastily, quickly. (R.) சீக்கிரகதி, s. A quick pace, rapid progress. 2. The quick movement of a carriage, a horse, &c. (p.) சீக்கிரகாரன், s. An expeditious person. சீக்கிரபுத்தி, s. Hasty counsel, precipitancy, rashness, foolhardiness. சீக்கிரப்படுத்த, inf. To hasten, hurry, expedite, quicken. சீக்கிரபரிதி, s. [in astron.] The annual parallax of a superior, or elongation of an inferior planet. சீக்கிரப்பட, inf. To be peevish, to take offence easily. 2. To be in haste, to be busy. சீக்கிரமானபுகையிலை, s. [prov.] Pungent tobacco. சீக்கிரம்பண்ண, inf. v. n. To hasten, to hurry. 2. [prov.] To be hot, as the sun; pungent, as tobacco; violent as poison, &c. சீக்கிரகேந்திரம், s. [in astron.] Commutation, being the angular distance of the sun from a planet. சீக்கிராத்தம்--சீக்கிரார்த்தம்--சீக்கிரவ ரை, s. [in astron.] The first equated geocentric longitude; [ex அர்த்தம்.] 35)

As சூரியகலை, 1. சூரியசித்திரம், s. [in astrol.] A subdivision of சூரியபுத்தி. சூரியசித்தாந்தம், s. An astronomical work, ஓர்கணிதநூல். See சித்தாந்தம். சூரியதிசை, s. The reign of the sun, as a planet. See திசை. சூரியதீக்ஷணம்--சூரியதேசசு, s. The radiance or heat of the sun, கடுவெயில். (p.) சூரியநமஸ்காரம்--சூரியநமற்காரம், s. The worship of the sun. 2. Adoration of the sun by sick persons, especially for diseases in the eyes. See நமஸ்காரம். சூரியபகவான்--சூரியநாராயணமூர்த்தி, s. The sun--as a deity. சூரியபுத்தி, s. [in astrol.] A division in சூரியதிசை, consisting of three months and eighteen days. 2. [in astron.] Sun's daily motion. சூரியபுடம், s. The drying of medicines in the sun. 2. [in astronomy.] Sun's longitude. சூரியபுத்திரன்--சூரியதனயன்--சூரிய குமாரன், s. Karna. கன்னன். 2. Sugreeva, ally of Rama, சுக்கிரீவன். 3. Saturn, சனி. (p.) சூரியபுராணம், s. Worship of the sun either by Saivas competent to perform பூசை, or such as belong to the சூரியவாதம். சூரியப்பலகை, s. [prov.] A plank placed at the transom, or lintel over a door. (c.) சூரியப்பிரபை--சூரியப்பிரவை, s. The radiance or splendor of the sun, சூரிய காந்தி. 2. An ornament of gold set with jewels worn on the head by females on special occasions, with another called சந்திரப்பிரபை. 3. [loc.] A seat or throne with a circlet like the sun, for an image, on festival occasions, விருத்தகேடகம். சூரியபிறை, s. [com.] As சூரியப்பிரபை, 2. சூரியமண்டலம், s. The orb or disc of the sun. 2. The are of the horizon which comprehends the northern and southern declinations of the sun, being divided into three parts of four signs each, and taken in the following order: (1.) மேடவீதி, the Aries'-course, including Taurus, இடபம், Leo, சிங்கம், Gemini, மிது னம், and Cancer, கடகம். 2. இடபவீதி, the Taurus'-course, including Pisces, மீனம், Aries, மேடம், Virgo, கன்னி, Libra, துலாம். (3.) மிதுனவீதி, the Gemini course, including Sagittarius, தனுசு, Capricorn, மக ரம், Aquarius, கும்பம், Scorpio, விருச்சிகம். சூரியனுதித்தல், v. noun. The rising of the sun. சூரியாஸ்தமனம், s.
