A termination of the plural of verbs embracing the first and second person, உளப்பாட்டுத்தன்மைப்பன்மைவிகுதி. 5. A contraction of ஆகும், used to denote a quotation--as பெரியவனாம், it is said 'he is great.' 6. A contraction of the future of ஆ, in the third person neuter. 7. A particle of assent, yes; it is often doubled --as ஆம் ஆம், written, ஆமாம், and contracted to ஆமா. 8. A particle of comparison, ஓர் உவமவுருபு--as அல்லாங்குழலாள், a woman whose hair is black as darkness. (p.) வந்தாம். We came. பணியுமாமென்றும் பெருமை. Greatness is always humble. நானும் நீயுஞ்சென்றாம். In astrology, the zodiac is divided into three equal parts of four signs each, in reference to their supposed influences--as சரராசி, the four signs auspicious to movements, as journeyings, &c., Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricornus; ஸ்திரராசி, the four signs auspicious to stationary actions or employments, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius; and உபயராசி, the four signs alike auspicious to both classes, Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. இராசிக்காரன்--இராசியுள்ளவன், s. A fortunate person, a lucky fellow. இராசிச்சக்கரம்--இராசிவட்டம், s. The zodiac. இராசிநாதன், s. The ruling planet at the time of a configuration, இராசிக்கதி காரியானகிரகம். இராசிபுடம், s. iṟngku (p. 57) கிறேன், இறங்கினேன், வேன், இறங்க, v. n. To descend, pass down a declivity or ladder, sink lower; to get down a tree, a precipice, &c.; to step down, alight from a horse, &c.; to crawl down, சரிய. 2. To descend voluntarily--as a bird, தாழலிறங்க. 3. To descend by degrees through air, water, or any other resisting medium--as leaves or other light substances; to fall or sink gradually or slowly; to fall--as rain; to flow down--as a torrent; to fall--as grain from the ear, மழைமுதலிய வையிறங்க. 4. To disembark, get out of a boat, or from one boat into another of smaller size, கப்பலினின்றிறங்க. 5. To be taken down, unladed, unladen, disburdened, சாமானிறங்க. 6. To fall or sink into the appropriate place--as a post into its hole, to be driven home--as a nail, உள்ளிறங்க. 7. To sink--as a denser body, to settle to the bottom--as earth in water, water in oil, &c., அமிழ. 8. To arrive at a place other than one's home, to pitch, alight, encamp --as an army. to halt, பாளயமிறங்க. 9. To get into the right road, நேர்வழியிலிறங்க. 1. To be brought down or reduced, தாழ்வடைய. 11. To abate--as fever commencing with the head and descending to the extremities, சுரமிறங்க. 12. To become reduced, or to descend--as bile in the system (which rising to the brain is supposed to cause mental derangement); hence to be cured of mental aberration, பித்தமிறங்க. 13. To subside--as animal poison in the system (which is supposed to descend from the head to the extremities), விடமிறங்க. கபாலநீர்கண்ணிலேயிறங்குகிறது. The humors of the head have descended into the eyes, causing cataract, depriving the person of sight, &c. ஒருதுறையிலிறங்கிவிட்டான். He has found a resting place; his mind is settled. இறங்காத்துறை, s. A place not convenient or proper for landing, or lodging. 2. (fig.) An improper marriage, connection, &c. இறங்குதுறை, s. A place of debarkation. 2. (fig.) Means, ways for effecting a thing, வழிவகை. இறங்குபொழுது, s. The time of sunset, சாய்பொழுது. இறங்குபொழுதிலேமருந்துகுடி. Take medicine when the sun declines; implying that the disease will thereby decline. இறங்குமிராசி, s. The six signs through which the sun passes in its southern course, சூரியனிறங்குமாறிராசிகள். இறக்கம், v. noun. Descending-as of food into the stomach; descent of a bird, a stream; debarkation from a boat, going down a ladder, &c., இறங்கு கை. 2. A descent, declivity, slope, declination, சரிவு. 3. A ford, இறங்குதுறை. 4. The drying up of the pustules in the small pox, measles and other similar diseases--so applied because it is supposed to begin at the head and to descend, அம்மைமுதலியவிறக்கம். 5. Paths and tracks of beasts in a jungle, மிருகங்கள் செல்வழி. நோயாளிக்குச்சோற்றிறக்கமில்லை. The patient is unable to swallow his food. இறக்கத்திலிருக்க, inf. To be in a low place, to be below. அவன்காரியம்இறக்கத்திலிருக்கிறது. His business is on the decline. இறங்கல், v. noun. The swelling of the glandula by an excess of wind, &c., அண்டமிறங்கல். 2. The subsiding of swelling, &c. from the head to the extremities, விக்கமிறங்கல். இறவு, v. noun. Lapse, passage, a place of descent, செல்கை. 5)

uppu (p. 62) s. Salt, any species of salt, acid or alkaline, லவணம். 2. Saltness, உவர்ப்பு. 3. The sea of salt-water-as distinguished from the other seas of Hindu cosmogony, the ocean, கடல். 4. Sweetness, deliciousness, இனிமை. (கு. 382. 8.) 5. A kind of play among females, மகளிர்விளையா ட்டு. 6. Melody, music, அராகம். 7. A heap of sand used as a goal in the game of prison-bars, விளையாட்டுமணற்குவியல். --Note. Five salts are spoken of as used by alchymists and சித்தாதிகள்; viz.: 1. கறியுப்பு, culinary salt. 2. வெடியுப்பு, salt-petre. 3. இந்துப்பு, a fossil, medicinal salt. 4. ஓட்டு ப்பு, salt supposed to be formed in the skull. 5. அமரியுப்பு, Urinary salt. இந்தப்பேச்சிலேஉப்பில்லை. This speech is void of savor. உப்பங்கழி, s. Salt-pan, உப்புக் கழி. உப்பளம், s. Salt-works, salt-pans, உப்புவிளைநிலம். 2. Brackish land, கழி. உப்பளங்கட்ட, inf. To construct salt-pans. உப்பளம்பாய்ச்ச, inf. To convey water into the salt-pans. உப்பளவர்--உப்பமைப்போர், s. Saltmanufacturers. உப்பிட--உப்புப்போட, inf. To salt. உப்பில்லாப்பேச்சு, s. Insipid discourse. உப்புக்கசனை--உப்பூறணி, s. Being impregnated with salt, as land. உப்புக்கட்டி, s. A granulation on a lump of salt. உப்புக்கண்டம், s. Salted meat, a piece of saltfish, flesh, &c. உப்புக்கண்டம்பறிகொடுத்தபார்ப்பாத்திபோல.... Like a Brahmanee who has lost her salted mutton [prov.], used when something is lost which cannot to inquired after. உப்புக்கரித்தல்--உப்புக்கூர்த்தல், v. noun. Having a saline taste. உப்புக்கீரை, s. A plant used for curry, ஓர்வகைக்கீரை. 2. A kind of curry made of that plant, ஓர்கறி. உப்புக்குத்தி, s. A kind of bird, ஓர்பட்சி. உப்புக்கொள்ளுகிறது, s. A play, taking a child on the back and crying, Salt for sale, ஓர்விளையாட்டு. உப்புச்செய்ய--உப்புவிளைவிக்க-உப்பமைக்க, inf. To make salt, உப்புண் டாக்க. உப்புத்தண்ணீர், s. Salt-water, brackish water. உப்புத்தரை--உப்புத்தரவை, s. Brackish soil. உப்புத்திராவகம், s. Muriatic acid, இலவணதிராவகம். உப்புத்திரி, s. A twist dipped in a preparation of salt, to serve as an injection for a child, மலங்கழிக்கஏற்றுந்திரி. உப்புப்பட, inf. To form as salt in pans, &c., by natural process, உப்புண் டாக. உப்புப்பாத்தி, s. The division or beds in salt-pans. உப்புப்பாத்திகட்ட, inf. To make salt-pans. உப்புப்பார்க்க, inf. To try the seasoning of curry, &c. by the taste, உப்புருசிபார்க்க. உப்புப்பால், s. The milk of the mother after child birth for three days. உப்புப்புல்லு, s. Grass growing in salt soil. உப்புப்பூக்க--உப்புப்பொரிய, inf. To begin to form--as salt; to form as the lamina, உப்புமலர. 2. To have a pale color on the skin, perhaps a concretion from perspiration, சரீரத்திலுப்புப்படர. உப்புப்புளிதள்ள, inf. To abstain from salt and acid things--a regimen in medical prescriptions. உப்புப்புளிப்புப்பார்க்க, inf. To examine the taste of curries, சுவையினிசை வுபார்க்க. 2. (fig.) To examine, make inquiry beforehand. பரீட்சைபார்க்க. 3. (fig.) To try or examine a part of a work, &c. in order to form an estimate of the whole. உப்புவாணிகர், s. Salt dealers, the caste, உமணர். உப்புவாணிகனறிவானோகர்ப்பூரவிலை? Is a salt dealer acquainted with the price of camphor? உப்புறைப்பு, s. Saltishness, flavoring of salt, உப்புக்கரிப்பு. காய்ச்சுப்பு or சவட்டுப்பு, s. Alkali, salt produced from the earth impregnated with soda. வழலையுப்பு, s. Soap. கறியுப்பு--கடலுப்பு, s. Sea-salt. காருப்பு, s. Salt produced from sesamum seed, கடுந்திலாலவணம். வளையலுப்பு, s. Fel vitri, glassgall; a very white salt. கல்லுப்பு, s. Salt in lumps. கந்தகவுப்பு, s. Salt produced from sulphur. கறுத்தவுப்பு, s. Black salt produced from the ashes of certain plants. மரவுப்பு, s. Potash. 63)

um (p. 63) . A connective particle variously used, ஓரிடைச்சொல். 1. எதிர்மறையும்மை, the use of உம் with an affirmative, or negative expressing probability, possibility, &c., and implying the possibility, &c., of the contrary--as, சாத்தன்வருதற்குமுரியன், Sattan may perhaps come; அவன்வரவுங்கூடும், It is possible that he may come. 2. சிறப்பும்மை, the உம் of speciality, including உயர்வுசிறப் பும்மை, or superiority and இழிவுசிறப்பும்மை, or inferiority--as, ஞானிகளுமறியார்கள்சித்திரநதிமூல ம், Even the sages are unacquainted with the source of the சித்திரம் river; இவ்வூர்ப்பூனை யும்புலாறின்னாது, Even the cats of this place will not eat flesh (so sacred is it, so vile is the practice); பார்ப்பானுங்கள்ளுண்டான், Even a Brahman has been drinking toddy; இவனைநாயுந்தேடாது, Even a dog will not regard him. 3. ஐயவும்மை, the உம் in doubt, uncertainty, indecision, equivocal forms, probability, possibility--as, அவர்பத்தாயினுந் தருவார்பதினைந்தாயினுந்தருவார், Perhaps he may give ten or he may give fifteen; மழை பெய்தாலும்பெய்யும், It may perhaps rain; பத் தானுமெட்டானுங்கொடு, Give ten, or eight, ten would be preferred, but eight may do; வரினும்வருவான், It is probable that he may come. The உம் is often suppressed. 4. எச்சவும்மை, இறந்ததுதழீஇயவெச்சவும்மை, எதிரதுதழீ இயவெச்சவும்மை, the use of உம் implying another person, thing, or event, understood, and meaning likewise, too, even--as, அவனும் வந்தான், He also is come (implying that another is come or expected); நாம்பாடவும் வேண்டும், We must sing also (as well as dance, &c.); கேட்டும்படிக்கவேண்டும், By inquiry also we must learn (as well as by other means). 5. முற்றும்பை, indicating the whole of a number or series, universality, totality--as, ஒருவருக்குமையமில்லை, None can doubt; எங்குமில்லை, no where; இருகண்ணுஞ் சிவந்தன, both eyes reddened; எவ்விடமும், every where; இரண்டையுங்கொண்டுவா, Bring them both; எல்லாரும், எவரும், ஆரும்வந்தார், all, whoever, &c. came; மிகுந்தநாலுபணத்தை யுந்தா, Give me the remaining four fanams; மூவரும், all the three persons. 6. எண்ணும் மை, a numeral connective, corresponding with, and commonly repeated with each word of the series; நீயுமவனும்வந்தீர்கள், You and he came. The particle is sometimes joined to the last only--as, சாத்தன், கொற்றன், பூதனும் வந்தார்கள், Sattan, Kottan and Poodan came. Sometimes it is wholly omitted, and a pronoun including the series used instead--as, சாத்தன்கொற்றன்இவர்கள்வந்தார்கள். Sometimes the last noun in the series is used in the plural--as, சாத்தகோற்றவர்வந்தார்கள். 7. தெரிநிலையும்மை, the உம் of ascertainment, clear perception, or decision, used of three or more things concerning which doubt has been entertained, but which is now cleared up--as, ஆணுமன்றுபெண்ணுமன்று, It is neither male nor female (but in hermaphrodite); அவருண்பதுசோறுமல்ல, பணிகாரமுமல் ல, சாகமூலபலாதிகள், His food is neither rice nor cakes, but leaves, roots and fruits, &c. 8. ஆக்கவும்மை, உம் expressive of a change of state--as, பாலுமாயிற்று, This milk became medicine also; வலியனுமாயினான், He has become even a strong man. The above eight are given in நன்னூல். 9. உம் joined to an infinitive implies விரைவு, the immediate occurrence of the event--as, துரைகட்டளையிடவுங்காரியஞ்செய்துமுடிந்தது, As soon as the magistrate gave the order, the thing was done; அவர்சொல்லவுமுலகங்களுண் டாம், As soon as he speaks worlds appear. The உம் is often omitted, but then it is less expressive--as, நானிதைச்செய்யெனச்செய்கிறான், I say this and he does it. 1. உம் added to a verbal noun in poetry, sometimes gives it a gerund-like succession of the event--as, காண்டலுமிதுவேசொல்வான், Seeing him he spoke thus; வருதலுந்தழுவிக் கொண்டான், As soon as he came he embraced. 11. உம் is associated to the social ablative with the same meaning--as, கடுங்கணைதொடுத்தலோடும், As soon as the swift arrows were shot. 12. உம் added to the infinitive serves for optative, especially in epistolary usage but not in good style--as, தாங்கள்மறுமொழியனுப்பவும், May you please to send an answer; இப்படிச்செய்யவும், May you do so, I wish you to do so. 13. உம் added to the following forms of a verb, செய்து, செய்யின், செய்தால், has the force of though, although--as, அவனறிந்தும்வரவில்லை. Though he knew, he did not come; சொல்லி னும் or சொன்னாலும்அவன்கேளான், Though you may tell him he will not listen. 14. உம் added to இல் or இன் forms of the fifth case gives the force of the comparative degree --as, கந்தனினும்வலியனே, He is even stronger than Skanda. 15. A token of reproof, menace, anger, &c., also of attention, assent, doubt, non-compliance, &c., (see ஊம்)--as, உம்மெனத்தெழித்துரப்ப, He reproved his rashness by uttering the menacing sound உம் (ஸ்காந்தம்); கதைசொல்லுகி றேன்உம்கொட்டிக்கேள், I am going to tell you a story, show that you listen by saying உம்; உம்மெனுமார்பைத்தட்டும், The guilt of Brahmanicide manifested in a phantom threatened by saying உம் and striking on its breast (திருவிளையாடல்). 16. A termination of the imperative plural, முன்னிலைப்பன்மைவி குதி-- as, நீவிர்சொல்லும், say ye. It is often used honorifically in imperative singular --as, கடவுளேநீரிரங்கும், God be merciful. 17. A termination of verbs third pers. pres. or fut. tense sing. number, also of neut. plurals--as அவன்செய்யும், He does or will do it; சிங்கங்கள்முழங்கும், The lions roar, or will roar, செய்யுமென்முற்றுவிகுதி. 18. A modification of the pronoun நீர் when it is declined in the different cases--as, உம்மை, உம் மால், &c. 19. The termination of the future relative participle, எதிர்காலப்பெயரெச்ச விகுதி--as, உலகாளும்அரசர், Kings who govern the world. 2)

ēku (p. 77) கிறேன், ஏகினேன், வேன், ஏக, v. n. To go, pass, walk, போக. 2. To lapse, pass--applied to time, கழிய. (p.) புவியுங்கடலுங்கடந்தேகுமென்றால். If (the soul) will pass over the earth and sea and stray from (God's presence). (சத.) ஏகல், v. noun. Going, walking, போதல். 56) *

oru (p. 83) adj. [changed from ஒன்று, which is the root.] Before vowels and sometimes before consonants, the உ often is dropped and the ஒ lengthened--as ஓரிலை, a leaf. In some connexions and with appropriate emphasis, it means sameness, singularity, peculiarity, specialness, celebrity, &c. ஒருகூடுமுடைந்தவனொன்பதுகூடுமுடைவான். . . . . He who has fabricated one bird's cage may fabricate nine. [prov.] ஒருகண்டசீராக, adv. In one uninterrupted course, monotonously, invariably, constantly. ஒருகண்டசீராகமழைபெய்கிறது. It rains without intermission. ஒருகண்டசீராகக்கூப்பிடுகிறான். He continues calling. ஒருகண்டசீராய்நடக்க. To continue unchanged. ஒருகண்ணுக்குறங்க, inf. To enjoy a short nap. ஒருகண்மூடியொருகண்விழித்தல். Partiality, especially to children. ஒருகாரியம், s. [prov.] One thing, something, a term used in calling or diverting attention, or in stating a reason, &c., in discussion. ஒருகால், s. A foot or one foot, ஒற்றைக்கால். 2. adv. [improp. ஒருக்கால்.] Once, sometime or other, for once, sometimes, ஒருமுறை. ஒருகாலிலேநிற்கிறான். He insists on (going, having, &c.), he is firmly resolved. ஒருகாலும். Never. ஒருகாலுஞ்செய்யான். He never does it, he never will do it, he never can do it. ஒருகாலுமில்லை. Never, at no time, not once. ஒருகாலுமுன்னைக்கைவிடேன். I will never forsake thee. ஒருகாலும்பொய்சொல்லான். He will never tell a lie. ஒருகாலே, adv. In great abundance, greatly. 2. Once, at once, continuously. ஒருகாலேகூட்டமாய்ப்போக. To go together in one continuous company. ஒருகாலே தேடிக் குவித்துக்கொண்டான். He has laid up a vast quantity. ஒருகாலேபேசுகிறானொன்றும்விளங்கவில்லை. He speaks a great deal, but nothing is understood. ஒருகாலேயுறுக்கிக்கொண்டுவருகிறார். He is scolding much. ஒருகாலேயெல்லாங்கொடுக்கிறது. To give all at once. ஒருகாலேயெல்லாஞ்செய்ய. To do all at once, to finish the whole. ஒருகாலேயெல்லாம்வாங்க. To receive altogether. ஒருகாற்கண்டசீராயிருக்க. To be unchangeable. ஒருகாற்செய்தவனிருகாற்செய்வான். He who has done so once, may do it again. இன்னமொருகால். Again, once more. மாற்றானுமொருகாலிதஞ்சொல்லுகிறான். Even one's foe may sometimes speak to one's advantage. ஒருகிடை, v. noun. Being bedridden; confinement by sickness or grief to a recumbent posture, கிடந்தகிடை. ஒருகிடையாகக்கிடத்தல். Lying still, unable or unwilling to rise. ஒருகுடி, s. The relations of one family. ஒருகுடித்தமர், s. Persons of the same family, near relatives--commonly on the paternal side, தாயத்தார். ஒருகூட்டு, s. Close union, combination between two persons, taking another's part, ஒருசேர்க்கை. ஒருகை, s. (fig.) Party, union, conjunction, combination, ஒருவகுப்பு, lit. one hand. அவர்களொருகையாயிருக்கிறார்கள். Love on one side not yet reciprocated, love-intrigue, கைக்கிளை. ஒருதலைதுணிதல், v. noun. [in literature.] An author's choice or decision between two different sentiments found in the writings of others, 32--உத்தியி லொன்று. ஒருதலைநோவு--ஒருதலைவலி, s. Pain on one side of the head. ஒருதலைப்பாக்கு, s. [prov.] An imperfect arecanut, defective on one side. ஒருதலைவழக்கு--ஒருதலைநியாயம், s. Partiality in giving judgment, statements, descriptions, &c., leaning to one side or party, an ex-party statement. ஒருதலைவழக்குநூலினுஞ்செம்மை. The statement made by only one party in a suit is straighter than a line; i. e. one tale is good till another is told. ஒருதன்மை, s. Being of one and the same kind, ஒருவிதம். 2. Incomparableness, ஒப்பற்றதன்மை. 3. Unchangeableness, மாறாமை. ஒருதாரை, s. One edge. 2. adv. [prov.] At once, altogether, without interruption, ஒருமிக்க. ஒருதாரைக்கத்தி, s. Thou only art the Lord. அவனொருத்தன்வந்தான். He only is come. 2. That fellow is come. ஒருநெல்லுப்பெருவெள்ளை, s. [prov.] A kind of rice, ஓர்வகைநெல். ஒருநேரம், s. An unseasonable time. இவனிராத்திரியொருநேரத்தில்என்வீட்டுக்குவந் தான். He came last night to my house at an unseasonable hour. ஒருபடி, adv. Tolerably, ordinarily, ஒருவாறு. 2. In some degree, to some extent, ஒருவிதம். ஒருபடிசெய்துமுடித்தார்கள். They have done it, finished it, &c. with great labor. 2.
