ākkm (p. 35) s. An abstract from ஆகு தல், or ஆக்குதல், indicating change from one state or quality to another--as in இவன் நல்லவனானான், he has become a good man. 2. Gain, profit, acquisition, இலாபம். 3. Wealth, prosperity, riches, fortune, affluence, செல்வம். 4. Gold, பொன். 5. Lakshmi, இலக்குமி. 6. The front division of an army, கொடிப்படை. 7. Elevation, எழு ச்சி. 8. Enlargement, increase, பெருக்கம். (p.) ஆக்கச்சொல், s. A word or phrase used metonymically, ஆகுபெயர்ச்சொல்; such as, விட்டவாக்கச்சொல், விடாதவாக்கச் சொல், விட்டும்விடாதவாக்கச்சொல். ஆக்கஞ்செப்பல், v. noun. One of the ten அவத்தை--talking much of a loved one. ஆக்கப்பெயர், s. Nouns or names given at pleasure, arbitrary signs differing slightly from the pure, இடுகுறிப்பெயர். It is of two kinds; viz.: 1. இடுகுறியாக்கப் பெயர்; as முட்டை, though already an arbitrary sign to denote an egg has yet the signification of Subramanian, as a name given to him subsequently by பொய்யாமொழிப்புலவர், at his own request. 2. காரணவாக்கப்பெயர்; as மலைமகண்மகன், the son of Parvati--the above Subramanian himself. ஆக்கப்பொருள், s. A meaning given to a word or phrase not originally and directly belonging to it, ஆகுபெயர்ப் பொருள். ஆக்கவினைக்குறிப்பு, s. A verb indicating a natural change of state or quality, ஓர்குறிப்புவினை, as இவன் நல்லவனாயிருக் கிறான். 22) *

iyl (p. 48) s. Nature, natural property or quality, குணம். 2. Good conduct, conduct appropriate to a person's caste, rank, office, &c., ஒழுக்கம். 3. Order, course, rule, method, ஒழுங்கு. 4. One disposed to maintain a course of conduct proper for a king. இயலுவமம், s. [in rhetoric.] A comparison of the properties of different things, பண்புவமை. இயற்சீர், s. The ஆசிரியவுரிச்சீர், verse--a metrical foot of four அசை. See சீர். இயற்சீர்வெண்டளை, s. Combination of two simple or ஆசிரியம் feet, or connection of an ஆசிரியம் foot, ending with a compound அசை, with another beginning with a simple one, or vice versa, மாமுன்னிரையும்விளமுன்னேருமொன்றிவருவது. இயற்சொல், s. A word in common use--in distinction from திரிசொல்-exclusively poetic usage--words understood both by the learned and unlearned. இயற்பெயர், s. Proper or arbitrary names, titles, terms of office, &c., இயல் பாயிடப்பட்டபெயர்; also names of things indicating a whole--as distinguished from parts. 2. Simple or original names --as distinguished from ஆகுபெயர் or derived names, செம்பொருளையுணர்த்தும்பெயர். இயற்றமிழ், s. Natural Tamil, whether common or poetic--as distinguished from இசைத்தமிழ், or Tamil adapted to music, and நாடகத்தமிழ் or dramatic Tamil, in both of which various changes occur in combination, construction, &c., முத்தமிழினொன்று. இயற்றளை, s. Connection of ஆசிரி யம் verse--as ஆசிரியத்தளை. See தளை. இயனூல், s. A system of grammatical rules. இயன்மொழிவாழ்த்து, s. A poem instructing children by the good disposition and behavior of their forefathers, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். 8)

kttṉ (p. 92) s. An agent, a doer, a maker, an author, &c., செய்பவன். See கந்தன். The word is also written கருத்தன். Sans. கர்த்தா. அவனேவெட்டவும்விடவுங்கத்தன். He can either behead him or spare him; i. e. he has arbitrary power. கத்தராளி, s. [prov. vul.] A chief, a principal, an owner, a competent person, தலைவன். அவன்அதற்குக்கத்தராளியோ. Is he competent for that? கத்தவியம், s. See கர்த்தவியம். கத்தா, s. God, கடவுள். கத்தாக்கள், s. A stanza curiously constructed, of a few letters in the periphery and radii of a circle, to be repeated over and over in the reading, ஓர்மிறைக்கவி.--It embraces three varieties; viz.: நான்காரைச்சக்கரம்.ஆறா ரைச்சக்கரம் and எட்டாரைச்சக்கரம். (தண்டி.) அவனுக்கிதோடேசக்கரமறுதி. His course of life will end with this. சக்கரத்தில் கிடந்தாடுகிறான். He is captivated, enamored--said of a lover. 2. A charitable or virtuous disposition, motive, intention, object, &c. தருமசிவாசாரி, s. A name of the gurus of the mercantile caste. தருமசீலன், s. (fem. தருமசீலி.) A charitable person piously disposed. தருமசூட்சுமம், s. A nice and difficult point in pleading. தருமஞ்செய்ய, inf. To do charitable and virtuous acts. தருமதானம், s. Beneficence, charitable gifts. தருமதேவதை, s. The goddess of virtue born from the right breast of Brahma, அம்பாலிகை. 2. The vehicle of Siva in the form of a bull, நந்தி. 3. (fig.) A good woman, உத்தமி.--Note. The goddess is described as placing four feet on the earth in the golden age; three in the next, or silver age; two in the brazen; and only one in the iron age. தருமநடை, s. Moral, religious, virtuous conduct; observing prescribed duties according to one's caste. தருமநாள், s. The third lunar asterism --as பரணி. தருமநியாயம்--தருமநீதி, s. Impartial discussion as given in the code of laws. (c.) தருமநூல், s. A virtuous wife, கற் புள்ளமனைவி. தருமபுத்திரன், s. As தருமநந்தனன். See under தருமன். தருமபுருஷன், s. A charitable and pious man. தருமப்பள்ளி, s. A charity school. தருமப்பிணம், s. A corpse buried by public charity. தருமப்பிரபு, s. A man eminent for equity and benevolence. தருமப்பிள்ளை, s. Combat between two champions of equal powers, with the same kind of weapons, and taking no improper advantage. தருமவட்டி, s. Lawful interest. (c.) தருமவாடி, s. An enclosure from which alms are given. தருமவாட்டி--தருமவதி, s. A charitable female. தருமவாளி--தருமவான்--தருமவந்தன், s. A charitable and pious man. (c.) தருமாசனத்தார், s. Judges. தருமாசனம், s. tāṉam (p. 236) --ஸ்தானம், s. Place, location, situation, spot, station, இடம். 2. Home, abode, dwelling, residence, locality; natural situation, habitation; elements of a creature, &c., இருப்பிடம். 3. Any part or member of the body, any particular or special part, உயிர்நிலை. 4. Any of the five seats or situations of the soul in the body. (See அவத்தை.) 5. Any special place, as the residence of the king or chief, இராசஸ் தானம். 6. A sacred shrine, the interior or most sacred spot in a temple, &c., சர்ப்பக் கிரகம். 7. The world of Indra, as சுவர்க்கம். 8. Strength, power, firmness, வலி. 9. Stage of life-poetically considered, செய் யுட்பொருத்தம். 1. Any of the four seats or sources of the sounds of the letters, எழுத்துப்பிறக்குமிடம். 11. [in numeration.] Place or digit, எண்ணின்தானம். 12. [in astrol.] Any of the twelve signs consulted, for predicting one's fortune, in reference to the planets and their situation in the signs, கிரகநிலை. 13. Any of the five places in the zodiac with respect to any given planet. 14. [vul. for ஸ்நானம்.] A bath. 15. (R.) The upright posture of the images of Vishnu, in distinction from the sitting. தானம், 5. The five places are: 1. ஆட் சித்தானம், when the planet presides, (See under ஆள், v.) 2. உச்சதானம். when the sun is in Aries, the Moon in Taurus, Mars in Capricornus, Mercury in Virgo. This is a very auspicious conjunction, four times better than the first. 3. நீசத் தானம், the position of the planets in the seventh place from the auspicious, உச் சம், and thought to be very bad. 4. நட் புத்தானம், the benign position of the planets. (See under நட்பு.) 5. பசைத்தானம். the malign position, causing continual hatred. See under பகை. தானம், 12. The twelve astrological signs are: 1. சென்மஸ்தானம், the rising sign at birth, having reference to fortune generally, according to the character and influence of the planets that may be in it. 2. வாக்குஸ்தானம், திரவியஸ் தானம், குடும்பஸ்தானம், the second sign at birth as applying to the powers of speech, influence, learning, wife, &c. 3. சகோதரஸ்தானம், the third, referring to brothers and sisters whether there will be any, the good or evil they will do to the person, or he to them. 4. மாதுருஸ்தானம், மித்துருஸ்தானம், வாகனஸ்தானம், the forth, referring to the life of the mother, or friends. 5. புத்திரஸ்தானம், the fifth regards future offspring. 6. சத்துருஸ்தானம், உரோகஸ்தானம், the sixth shows whether the person will have enemies, and the evils to which he will be liable. 7. களத்திரஸ்தானம், குடும்பஸ்தானம், the seventh, referring to a wife and settlement in life. 8. மிருத்துஸ்தானம், ஆ யுஸ்தானம், the eighth, the limit of life. 9. தருமஸ்தானம், புண்ணியஸ்தானம், the ninth, referring to the extent of the person's liberality, &c. 1. கருமஸ்தானம், the tenth, conduct, character good or bad, &c. 11. இலாபஸ்தானம், பாக்கியஸ்தானம், the eleventh income, acquisition, wealth prosperity. 12. செலவுஸ்தானம், வியஸ்தா னம், the twelfth, prodigality or penuriousness, &c. தானக்கை, s. [prov.] Any vital part of the body, உயிர்நிலை. 2. Favorable situation of a place, தகுந்தஇடம். தானத்தான், s. A pujari in a Saiva temple, ஸ்தானீகன். 2. A hereditary chief, தலைமைக்காரன். தானப்புழு, s. Worms in the anus, causing irritation or itching. See திமி ரிப்பூச்சி. தானப்புழுக்கிண்ட, inf. To gnaw as worms in the anus, &c. [prov.] தானப்பொருத்தம், s. The fourth of ten items to be regarded in the choice of the first word of a poem--being the correspondence of its initial letter, with any of the five arbitrary divisions in which the initial of the name of the hero falls. The five தானம் are, 1. பாலன். 2. குமரன். 3. அரசன். 4. விருத்தன். 5. மரணம். which denote the five stages of life. The five arbitrary divisions of letters are அ, ஆ; இ, ஈ, ஐ; உ, ஊ, ஔ, எ, ஏ; ஒ; ஓ. தானவண்ணம், s. A curious kind of song, சுரவிகற்பப்பாட்டு. தானவரிசைபாட, inf. To sing with a tremendous noise. 13) *

tīr (p. 243) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க. v. a. To finish, complete, conclude, முடிக்க. 2. To settle, decide, determine, predestinate, தீர்மானிக்க. 3. To adjust a quarrel, bargain, marriage contract, &c., திட்டஞ்செய்ய. 4. To arbitrate, decide a law-suit, pass sentence as a judge, தீர்ப்புச்செய்ய. 5. To remove moral or ceremonial defilement, to expiate, நீக்க. 6. To remove affliction, sorrow, pain; to terminate births, as the Deity, விடுக்க. 7. To satisfy hunger, desire, revenge, lust, &c., திருத்தியாக்க. 8. To accomplish, effect, fulfil, consummate, perfect, பூர்த்தியாக்க. (c.) தீர்த்தறுத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To drop acquaintance, terminate intercourse or dealings. தீர்த்துக்கொடுக்க, inf. To settle the price and give up the commodity. தீர்த்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To settle an account. தீர்த்துப்போட--தீர்த்துவிட, inf. To settle a difference between parties. 2. To pay off. தீர்த்தல், v. noun. A causing to leave or to quit, போக்குதல். (நீதிநெறிவிள.) தீர்ப்பு, v. noun. Settlement, conclusion, completion, termination, consummation, முடிப்பு. 2. Decision, award. judgement, decree, sentence, நியமம். 3. Determination, resolution, தீர்மானம். 4. Clearance, removal, liquidation, remission, நிவிர்த்தி. 5. Antidote, atonement, expiation, பரிகரிப்பு. தீர்ப்பானபேச்சு, s. A decision, conclusion. தீர்ப்பானவிலை, s. A settled price--as தீர்மானமானவிலை. தீர்ப்புக்கட்ட, inf. To make a decision, settle a business, to finish, decide, fix. 2. To form an opinion, judgement, &c. தீர்ப்புக்காண, inf. To find out the result of a law-suit, &c. 2. To terminate, come to an issue--as a law-suit. தீர்ப்புச்சொல்ல, inf. To speak decidedly. 2. To pass sentence, pronounce judgement. 3. To suggest a remedy, antidote, &c., or counteraction of a curse. தீர்ப்புநகல், s. Copy of a decision. தீர்ப்பெழுத, inf. To record a sentence, award, &c., as a judge. 31) *

paṭṭaṇam (p. 291) s. Town, city, a large town, நகரம். W. p. 496. PAT'T'ANA. (c.) --Note. The Sanscrit does not warrant the distinction which makes பட்டணம் a large and பட்டினம் a small city; but it is Tamil usage. பட்டணக்கரை, s. The town and its vicinity taken collectively. (colloq.) பட்டணசுவாமி, s. A devotee-poet of Caveripumpatnam, Who was a rich merchant, but renounced the world, and wrote many small poems; also பட்டணத்துப் பிள்ளை. 2. An arbitrator in a town. பட்டணத்தார், s. [sing. பட்டணத்தா ன்.] Inhabitants of a town, citizens. பட்டணப்பழக்கம், s. City manners. பட்டணப்பிரவேசம், s. Entrance into a town. 2. Parading through a town in state, turning to the right. பட்டணவாசம், s. Residence in a town, a settlement, a town. பட்டணவாசி, s. Inhabitant of a town. 123)

mattiyam (p. 343) s. The centre, the middle, நடு. 2. [in astron.] Mean. W. p. 639. MADHYA. 3. The waist, இடை. (சது.) மத்தியகாலம், s. [in astron.] Middle of an eclipse, expressed in Nalikai, &c. மத்தியஸ்தம், s. Mediation, arbitration, adjudication. (c.) மத்தியஸ்தலம், s. Neutral ground. 2. [limited.] Place of departed souls. மத்தியஸ்தன், s. [fem. மத்தியஸ்தி.] A mediator, an umpire, an arbitrator, நடு நிற்பவன். W. p. 64. MADHYASTA. மத்தியதேசம், s. That part of India, which is bounded by Kurukshetra on the north, Allahabad on the south, the Hymalaya mountains on the east, and the Vindhia mountains on the west-comprising the modern provinces of Allahabad, Agra, Delhi, Oude, &c. (lit.) the middle country. (Wils.) மத்தியமோட்சம், s. [in astron.] Mean end of an eclipse, கிராணம்விடுகை. மத்தியரேகை, s. The equator, or the meridian. (Modern.) மத்தியலோகம், s. [sometimes மத்தியம or மத்திமலோகம்.] The earth, as central in the Hindu system, பூலோகம். மத்தியவிருத்தம், s. The navel, உந்தி. (சது.) 17) *

muccilikkā (p. 356) --முச்சிலிக்கை, s. [Hind.] An agreement in writing, a bond given to arbitrators involving a penalty, உறுதியுடன்படிக்கை. 90)

vacam (p. 374) s. Subordination; subjection, dependence, கீழ்ப்படிகை. 2. Possession, கை வசம். 3. Proper state, condition, நிலைவரம். 4. Good order, regularity, ஒழுங்கு. 5. Possibility, power, இயலுகை. 6. Occupancy, ஆட்சி. W. p. 742. VASA. இதுஎன்வசத்திலிருக்கிறது. It is in my possession. இதுஅவன்வசமல்ல. It is beyond his ability. சரீரம்வசமில்லாமலிருக்கிறது. I am indisposed. அதைஎன்வசம்பண்ணினான். He has put it in my possession. அதுவசத்துக்குவராமற்போயிற்று. It did not succeed. வசமறியாமலகப்பட்டுக்கொண்டான். Not knowing what was proper, he became entangled. அவன்வசத்துக்குவந்தான். He is reformed. அவனங்கேவசமறியாமற்போனான். He went there not knowing the state [of things.] சப்பட்டைவசமாய்வை. Lay it along flat. சுவசம், s. Good health; better circumstances. புறவசம், s. Another's affair, or possession. வசகிருதி, s. [com. வசவிருதி.] Act of taming, training, reforming; [ex கிருதி.] வசக்கட்டு, s. Possession. (R.) இதார்வசக்கட்டாயிருக்கிறது. To whom does this belong? வசக்கேடு--வசப்பிழை, s. Loss of health, disorder, delirium. (Beschi.) வசங்கட்டிவைக்க, inf. To deposit a thing in custody of an arbitrator. (R.) வசங்கண்டவன், appel. n. One who understands the state of things. 2. A man of much experience. வசங்கெட்டவன், appel. n. An impotent man, one whose health is impaired. 2. A man in reduced circumstances. 3. (R.) One who has set himself free. வசஞ்செய்ய--வசப்படுத்த--வசமாக்க --வசம்பண்ண, inf. [intrans. வசப்பட--வச மாக.] To bring into one's possession, or under one's power. அவன்வசப்பட்டான். He submitted, yielded. வசந்தப்பி, [as an adv.] Irregularly, on the wrong side. இதுவசந்தப்பிச்சேர்த்திருக்கிறது. The parts of the frame are irregularly, joined. வசமழிக்க, inf. To renounce subjection. (Beschi.) வசமாக்க, inf. To make one's own. See வசஞ்செய்ய. வசமாய், adv. A right, in good order. வசமாயிணை. Join it properly. வசமாய்வை. Place it rightly. வசவிர்த்தி, s.
