The written word, sacred writings, holy writ, as one of the three means of attaining knowledge, வேத மொழி; several kinds of உரை, or modes of explanation are given by Tamil Grammarians. The author of காரிகை has given four, viz.: 1. கருத்துரை, the main sentiment or scope of the text explained, also called தாற்பரியவுரை. 2. பதவுரை, verbal explanation, or interpretation, word by word, or clause by clause, also called கண்ணழிவுரை. 3. பொழிப்புரை, the substance of the text omitting rhetorical ornament, and adjuncts, or a free rendering of the text without interruption, also called பொழிப்புத் திரட்டுரை and பிண்டவுரை. --Note. The latter is the same as பதவுரை would be without the words of the text interspersed. 4. விரித்துரை, explanation at large, comment or exposition with proofs, illustrations, &c., also called அலகவுரை and விரியுரை; any of the preceding three, or any other kind of explanation may be included in this last. According to நன்னூல், உரை is divided into tow general classes, viz.: காண்டிகையுரை and விருத்தியுரை. 1. காண்டிகையுரை, brief exposition, or explanation of the text embracing five sub-divisions. (a) கருத்துரை, the scope of the text. (b) பதப்பொருள், verbal rendering being either as பதவுரை or as the scope and definition of பொழிப்புரை, given above, (c) உதாரணம், example for illustration. (d) வினா, anticipating objections, (lit.) proposing questions. (e) விடை, answering such objections or questions as may possibly occur. 2. விருத்தியுரை, copious or complete explanation embracing fourteen sub-divisions. 1. பாடம், giving the text or verse to be explained with different readings and choice exposition. 2. கருத்துரை, the general scope, or import of the text, as in காண்டிகை. 3. சொல்வகை, giving the parts of speech, or showing the grammatical connection when necessary to clear away obscurities. 4. சொ ற்பொருள், giving equivalent, literal words, or clauses as பதப்பொருள், in காண்டிகை, verbal renderings, &c. 5. தொகுத்துரை, a free rendering of the text as பொழிப்புரை, above. 6. உதாரணம், illustration by examples, as above. 7. வினா, anticipating objections, or raising questions as before. 8. விடை, answering such objections or giving reasons in support of the statements in the text. 9. விசேடம், special explanation, particular remarks. 1. விரிவு, supplying ellipses as of cases or otherwise. 11. அதிகாரம், determining the meaning of doubtful terms by reference to the subjects under discussion, as belonging to such a head, &c., or according to another exposition pointing out the beginning and ending of the discussion of the different subjects respectively, the opinions of different commentators. 12. துணிவு, deciding the meaning of terms concerning which there may be diversity of opinion. 13. பயன், inference, applications or recapitulation to show what is to be learnt by the text. 14. ஆசிரியவசனம், quotations, or textuary proofs from other authors. (p.) உரைகட்ட, inf. To comment on a work. உரைகாரன், s. A commentator, expositor, உரையாசிரியன். உரைக்கோள், s. The construction given by the commentator to the text, உரைகாரன்கருத்து. உரைசெய்ய, inf. To speak, declare, பேச. To make a commentary, வியாக்கியானம்பண்ண. உரைநூல், s. A work on which a commentary has been written, உரைபெற் றநூல். உரைபாடம்--உரையேடு, s. A work with its commentary. உரையாசிரியன், s. [used honorifically] A commentator, உரைகாரன். உரையாட, inf. To say, speak, tell, சொல்ல. 2. To converse, dispute, பேச. (p.) என்றுரையாடி நெடுங்கடல்வண்ணனெழுந்தருள. Having said thus, Vishnu who wears the color of the broad sea condescended to start--(பார.) உரையாயிருக்க, inf. To be in prose. உரையிலக்கணம், s. A recipient, a receptacle of the soul, சரீரம். 5. A case, a sheath, உறை. 6. A testaceous, or mud shell of some insects; a cocoon, புழுக்கூடு. 7. [in carpentry.] A mortise; also, groove, கழுந்துக்கூடு. 8. A case for catching fish, மீன்பறி. 9. A covering of a cart-- as கூடாரம். (Sans. Gut'ha, to envelope, screen.) கூட்டோடேபோச்சுது குளிருங்காய்ச்சலும். The fever and ague have gone off with the case (the body); i. e. the person has died. கூடுகட்ட, inf. To build nests, cases, &c.--as birds, caterpillars, bees, &c. 2. To make cages, hives, &c. 3. To put a case or covering on fruits, &c. கூட்டிலடைக்க, inf. To inclose in a cage, to encage, to coop up. 2. To enclose a charm, a talisman or an amulet in a casket. கூட்டுப்பல்லக்கு, s. [prov.] A palankeen with sliding doors. கூடுபோட--கூடுவிட, inf. koṭu (p. 146) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To give, grant, afford, bestow, present, ஈய. 2. In combination, to issue--as commands; கட்டளையளிக்க; to communicate, impart--as knowledge, அறிவிக்க; to supply, give aid, உத விசெய்ய; to stay with the hand, or give support, முட்டுக்கொடுக்க; to create, give existence--as the Supreme Being, சிருட் டிக்க; to give place, to yield, இடங்கொடுக்க. Note.-- This word is generally used in its direct meanings of give, &c., only when there is a receiver, so as to correspond with வாங்க. It is therefore, except as to the elephant, incorrectly, though commonly, used in reference to the lower animals, Strictly also it implies the giving of a superior, to an inferior; but these distinctions are little noticed. When combined with the gerund of another verb or with a noun, the meaning is often modified--as சொல்லிக்கொடுக்க, to instruct, to teach; காட்டிக்கொடுக்க, to betray; முதுகு கொடுக்க, புறங்கொடுக்க, பின்கொடுக்க, to turn the back, to flee. கொடுப்பதொழியேல். Cease not to give [the poor.] கொடுக்கல்வாங்கல், v. noun. Dealing, bargaining. 2. Lending, borrowing, &c. அவனுக்குமெனக்குங்கொடுக்கல்வாங்கலுண்டு.... He and I have business transactions together. கொடுக்கல்வாங்கல்பண்ண, inf. To deal, bargain, barter; to lend and barrow. கொடுக்குமதி, s. [prov.] What is due to one, a debt. கொடாமை, v. noun. Not giving, withholding. கொடான். He will not give. கொடுத்துக்காட்ட, inf. To give and thus unintentionally encourage further application. கொடுத்துக்காட்டினால்விடார்கள். If you give way and encourage them, they will not let you be quiet. கற்றுக்கொடுக்க, inf. [loc.] To teach. சாகக்கொடுக்க, inf. To lose by death-as a mother her child, &c. புருஷனையுமகனையுஞ்சாகக்கொடுத்தேன்..... I have given my husband and son to death--lost them by death. நிறங்கொடுக்க, inf. To tinge, give a color. 2. To be sleek, smooth, plump-as a person in health. பால்பழங்கொடுக்க, inf. To present milk and peeled plantain--as the bride, to the bridegroom; the first food supplied to him. பெண்கொடுக்க, inf. To give a girl in marriage. முடித்துக்கொடுக்க, inf. To finish and give to another. 2. To marry; to give in marriage. வாங்கிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To take and give, that is, buy for another. கொடுப்பன--கொடுப்பனை, v. noun. Giving in marriage, கொள்வனை is receiving or marrying. எங்களுக்குமவர்களுக்குங் கொள்வினைகொடுப்பினை யில்லை. We do not intermarry. 6)

caṉṉatam (p. 173) s. Temporary possession, i. e., the presence of a demon in a person to utter oracles as to the result of a sickness, the means to be used for healing, whether a person will have issue, &c., ஆசேவம். 2. Oracle, the utterance of oracles, தெய்வங்கூறல். 3. (fig.) Rage, excessive anger, உத்தண்டம். 4. (fig.) The vanity and parade of one elated from office, &c., வீறாப்பு. (c.) சன்னதக்காரன், s. One who utters oracles by possession. சன்னதங்குலைய, inf. To depart--as the demon from one possessed. 2. To be deprived of authority, office, &c. சன்னதங்கேட்க, inf. To consult the oracle. சன்னதங்கொண்டாட, inf. To be possessed; to be in a rage; to assume parade, &c. See சன்னதம். சன்னதமழைக்க, inf. [prov.] To invoke the demon by singing its praises, burning incense, &c., to come, and take possession.--Note. It is often not known whether any of the company will be possessed, or who, if any. சன்னதமாட, inf. To whirl the head and be agitated, as one temporarily possessed. சன்னதமேற--சன்னதம்பற்ற--சன்னத ம்வர, inf. To possess a person, as a demon to utter oracles. 2. (fig.) To be provoked, உத்தண்டங்கொள்ள. தன்னைமறந்தசன்னதம், s. [prov.] Extravagant pride, forgetfulness of one's low origin, &c., பெருமைபாராட்டல். 78) *
