aṟi (p. 33) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. a. To know, understand, comprehend, recognize, be acquainted with; have a carnal knowledge of, தெரிய. (c.) புத்தியறிந்தபெண். A marriageable girl. வல்லமையறிவோம். We will find out which is the most competent, (by way of bravado.) தன்னையறியுமறிவேயறிவாகும் பின்னையறிவது பேயறி வாமே. To know one's self is knowledge, other knowledge is inferior. அறிகருவி, s. The organs of sense. அறிகுறி, s. A sign, mark, token, symbol. அறிஞன், s. A man of knowledge, especially of divine things, அறிவுடையோன். 2. A poet, புலவன். 3. A sage, முனிவன். 4. Mercury the planet, புதன். 5. Buddha, புத்தன். அறிதுயில், s. A kind of sleep or meditation, in which the person understands all that passes about him--an attribute supposed to belong to the gods and sages, especially to Vishnu. அறிதுயிலமர்ந்தமூர்த்தி, s. Vishnu, திருமால். அறிமடம், s. Indisposition to reduce to practice what is learned. 2. Inability to recall to memory, stupidity in learned persons from infatuation. 3. Feigned ignorance. அறிமுகம், s. Acquaintance with persons (and in vulgar use) with things, slight familiarity. அறியக்கொடுக்க, inf. To inform against one, indict, impeach. 2. To communicate information, instruction, &c. அறியாமை, neg. v. noun. Ignorance. அறியாவினா, s. One of the six forms of interrogation--as when one asks for information. அறியொண்ணாமை, neg. v. noun. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. There are eight ways of obtaining the true knowledge of a thing or occurrence; viz.: 1. காட்சி, by the senses, especially the sight--by experiments, பிரத்தியட்சப்பிர மாணம். 2. அனுமானம், by inference, by drawing conclusions from what has been admitted or is supposed true--as நெருப்பிற்கு வியாப்பியம் புகையென்றறிதல், where smoke is, there is fire. 3. ஆகமம், by the testimony or assertions of great men, either orally or in writing, பெரியோர்வாய்ச்சொல். 4. அரு த்தாபத்தி, by deduction established from premises, அந்நியதாவநுபபத்தி--as இரவிலுணவி ல்லாமற் பகலுண்ணாதவனுக்குப் பருத்தல்கூடாதென் னுமுணர்ச்சி. 5. உவமானம், by similarity or likeness, comparison, மரை பசுப்போலென்னுமு ணர்ச்சி. 6. அபாவம், proof of non-existence-as முன்னில்லை, பின்னில்லை, முழுதுமில்லை, ஒன்றி ன்மற்றொன்றில்லை. 7. ஐதீகம், by traditional testimony--as இம்மாத்திற்பேயுளதென்பது, this tree is haunted by the devil. 8. சம்பவம், proof of co-existence--as ஆயிரத்தினூறுண்டெ னல், where a thousand is, there is a hundred.
