The art which a scientific or literary author employs in treating his subject-such as the general plan, divisions, subdivisions, mode of discussion, examples, quoting authorities, showing how the sentiments of others agree with, or differ from his own, &c. In the பாயிரம் of நன்னூல், thirty-two particulars are given as proper to be kept in view by such writers, தந்திரவு த்தி. ūr (p. 70) s. A country, a village, town, or city, புரம். ஊரறிந்தபார்ப்பான். A brahman who knows the whole country or town; i. e. a person competent for business. ஊருடன்கூடிவாழ். Prosper in the society of your fellow citizens. ஊரோடேபோய்ச்சேர்ந்தான். He arrived at home. ஊரன், s. The chief of an agricultural district, மருதத்தலைவன். (p.) ஊரவர்கள்--ஊரார், s. Inhabitants of a village, town, country, &c. 2. Others, strangers, not one's own people, அன்னியர்.--Used adjectively, the ர் is often dropped--as ஊராகாரியம், others' affairs; ஊராசொத்து, others' property; ஊ ராகாணி, others' land. ஊராருடைமைக்குப்பேராசைகொள்ளுதல்..... Coveting other men's property-துஷ்டப்பிள்ளைக்குஊரார்புத்திசொல்லுவார்கள்... An unruly child will be chastized by the magistrates. ஊரார்கையிற்கொடுக்க, inf. To deliver into another man's hand. ஊராளி, s. The ruler, magistrate, or headman of a district, ஊரதிகாரி. ஊரிலிகம்பலை, s. [prop. ஊர்கலி கம்பலை.] A village quarrel, tumult, &c. ஊரின்னிசை, s. A poem concerning the heroes of a town, or country, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். See பிரபந்தம். ஊருக்குப்போக, inf. To go to a town, to go on a journey. ஊருணி, s. A public tank accessible to all in the town, ஊரடுத்தகுளம். ஊருணிநீர்நிறைந்தற்றேயுலகவாம்பேரறிவாளன் றிரு. The wealth of one possessing great wisdom, and who is much liked by the public is like a tank filled with water to which all have access. ஊரெழுச்சி, s. Rising of citizens to present complaints to the authorities; also insurrection, ஊர்க்கலகம். ஊர்கூடுதல், v. noun. Assembling --as citizens. ஊர்கூடிச்செக்குத்தள்ளவேண்டுமா? Is it necessary that the whole city come together to turn the oilman's press? i. e. a trifling matter does not require a concourse of people. ஊர்கோலம்வர--ஊர்வலம்வர, inf. To pass about as a nuptial procession, first to the right as being auspicious, கிராமப்பிரதட்சணம்வர. ஊர்க்கதை, s. Rumor, countrytalk, ஊர்ப்பேச்சு. 2. Unfounded reports, slander, defamation, பொய்ச்செய்தி. 3. A wild, romantic story, வீண்செய்தி. ஊர்க்கலகம், s. A village quarrel, ஊரிலுண்டாகுங்கலகம். 2. A general insurrection, இராசதுரோகமானகலகம். ஊர்க்காறுபாறு, s. The affairs of a place, public affairs, ஊர்க்காரியம். 2. Management of public affairs, ஊர்விசாரிப்பு. 3. Meddling with other's affairs, அன்னி யருடையகாரியவிசாரிப்பு. ஊர்க்குருவி, s. A sparrow, அ டைக்கலக்குருவி. உயரப்பறந்தாலுமூர்க்குருவிபருந்தாமா? Though a sparrow soars high, will it become a kite? ஊர்க்கொள்ளை, s. Devastation by an invading army. 2. Extortion by a headman, &c. 3. Epidemic, or other public calamities, ஊழிநோய். ஊர்த்தலைமை, s. Headship over the district. 2. A chief or superior person in a district. 3. The headman of a district. ஊர்நேரிசை, s. A poem in the நேரிசைவெண்பா incorporated with the name of the hero's town, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். ஊர்ப்பகை, s. Public hatred, general dislike. 2. Hatred of one's own country. ஊருடன்பகைக்கில்வேருடன்கெடும். One who lives contentiously with his fellow citizens shall be rooted out. (ஔவை.) ஊர்ப்பழி, s. Public censure, or blame, ஊர்நிந்தை. ஊர்ப்பாடு, s. Others' affairs-spoken of one inattentive to his own, அன்னியருடையகாரியம். ஊர்ப்புகைச்சல், s. The appearance of smoke at a distance--regarded as a calamitous omen. 2. Countrytalk, rumor, groundless report. ஊர்ப்புரட்டு, s. A great conspiracy, a monstrous fabrication of falsehood, in which one leads and takes others with him. 2. A gross falsehood. ஊர்ப்புரளி, s. Sedition, insurrection, a general commotion, ஊர்க்கலகம். ஊர்மனை, s. Habitations, a place inhabited as distinguished from a desert. ஊர்மன்று, s. A public hall, ஊரம் பலம். ஊர்வெண்பா, s. The வெண்பா of the town--a poem consisting of ten வெண்பா, in praise of a town, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். பேரூர், s. A large town. சிற்றூர், s. A small town. 2. The name of a village. 19)

aicuvariyam (p. 80) --ஐச்சுவரியம், s. Riches, wealth, felicity, prosperity, செல் வம். Eight species of ஐசுவரியம் are named. (அட்டைசுவரியம்.) 1. Royalty, dominion, இராசாங்கம். 2. Offspring. மக்கள். 3. kiravuñcam (p. 109) s. The Andil bird, அன்றில். (சது.) According to some authorities, a kind of heron. 2. The fourth of the seven Dwipas or continents, surrounded by the annular sea of curds, கிரவுஞ்சதீவு. (காந்.) 3. The eight special mountains (அஷ்டகிரி), in Jambu Dwipa are Kailasa, கைலை or வெள்ளிமலை; Himalaya, இமயம், or பனிமலை; Mandara, மந்தரம் or கடலைக்கடைந்த மலை; Vindhya, விந்தம் or ஆரியதேசத் தென்புறத் தெல்லைமலை; Nishada, நிடதம், or நிடதநாட்டுமலை; Hémakúda, ஏமகூடம் or பொன்மலை; Nilagiri, நீலகிரி or அஸ்தமிக்குமலை; Gand'hamadan, கந்தமா தனம் or மேருவின்கீழ்பாலுள்ளமலை. (Rott. Other authorities say Malyavan on the east; Gand'hamadan on the west; Nishatha, Hémakúda and Himalaya on the south; Nila, Sveda and Sringa on the north of Méru (காந்.) The right kind or best of the class, &c., சாதியி லுயர்ந்தது. (c.) 6. One of the ten modes of beating time, தாளப்பிரமாணம்பத்தினொன்று. W. p. 347. JATI. 7. (சது.) A tree in general, மரப்பொது.--Note. Hindu caste in the time of Menu. according to the சூடாமணிநிகண்டு was as follows 1. பிராமணர், Brahmans, the sacerdotal caste--reputed to have sprung from the face of the god Brahma; 2. சத்திரியர் or க்ஷத்திரியர், the royal or military caste--said to have sprung from his shoulders; 3. வைசியர், Vaisya caste as sprung from his thighs. This class is threefold; (a) கோவைசியர், herdsmen. (b) தனவைசியர், the mercantile caste including செட்டிகள். (c.) பூவைசியர், the agriculturalists embracing வேளாளர். 4. சூத்தி ரர், Sudra caste, embracing artificers and other servile tribes, supposed to have sprung from Brahma's feet. Of these eighteen are named, but the number is much greater. See குடிமை.--Note. 2. All the Tamil authorities, except the Nighandu, make the கோவைசியர் and பூவைசியர் including the வேளாளர் as the fourth or சூத் திரர் caste, and all inferior to these as சங்கர சாதி or mixed caste.--Note. 3. Brahmans call the கோவைசியர் and the பூவைசியர், சற்சூத்தி ரர் or superior Sudras, and the சூத்திரர் they call தற்சூத்திரர் or real Sudras. எந்தச்சாதியாடுவேணும். What kind of sheep do you want? நான்குபதினெட்டுச்சாதி. A mixture of the castes, high and low, (lit.) the four and eighteen castes intermixed, in contempt. சாதிக்குத்தக்கபுத்தி. The different degrees of intellect that characterize the respective castes; commonly spoken of inferiors. சாதியந்தப்புத்திகுலமந்த ஆசாரம். Every caste, has its degree of intellect, and every tribe its peculiar habits, usages, &c.-spoken when one of low caste does wrong. சாதிகுலம், s. [prov.] High caste. 2. Caste. சாதிகெட்டவன், s. Regard for one's own caste, sympathy among those of the same caste; [ex மானம்.] சாதிமுறை--சாதிமுறைமை, s. The laws, usages, rules, &c., of a caste. சாதிமான், s. One of a superior caste. சாதியாசாரம், s. Habits, customs, manners, professions, &c., of the caste. சாதியீனன், s. One of low caste, an out-caste. சாதியையிழுக்க, inf. To expatiate or dwell upon the low parentage of another. சாதியைவிட, inf. To break caste. சாதிவருணாச்சிரமம், s. [com. சாதிவ ருணாச்சிரம்.] The caste, class, religious order, &c.,--Note. This word is sometimes used as synonymous with சாதியா சாரம். சாதிநீலம், s. A genuine sapphire.-Note. All the gems, metals, &c., are in like manner distinguished. சாதிக்குதிரை, s. A horse of fine breed. சாதிக்காய், s. Nutmeg, (lit.) the nut of the சாதி tree. சாதிக்காய்த்தயிலம், s. Oil of nutmeg. சாதிச்சரக்கு, s. Good commodities. See சரக்கு. சாதிப்பூ, s. Peace of mind, tranquility, calmness. சித்தசமுசயம், s. Doubt of mind, hesitation, indetermination. (p.) சித்தசாந்தி, s. Stoical tranquility of mind, extinction of volitional feeling, &c., as attained by the ஞானி. (p.) சித்தசலனம், s. Agitation of mind, perturbation, disgust. See சலனம். சித்தஸ்வாதீனம், s. Command of one's will, self-control. சித்தஞ்செய்ய, inf. To settle, decide, give a final judgement, தீர்மானிக்க. 2. To will, desire; to direct, command; to be pleased, ஆக்கியாபிக்க. 3. To make ready, தயார்பண்ண. (Colloq.) சித்தத்தியாகம்--சித்தநிவர்த்தி, s. [prov.] Renunciation, entire subjection or extinction of the will and of secular purposes, resolves, desires, &c.,--as attained by severe abstract devotion in one ripening for liberation from births; absolute quiescence. See தியாகம். சித்தத்திற்கொள்ள, inf. To will, resolve, purpose, choose, prefer. சித்தந்திரும்ப--சித்தம்வர, inf. To be pleased to do, &c. (c.) சித்தப்பிரமை, s. [in astrol.] A conjunction of the lunar constellations with the days of the week and of the phases of the moon,-- not deemed very favorable; the twenty-first of the twenty-seven yogas, யோகமிருபத்தேழிலொ ன்று. 2. [prov.] A chief or principal place, as the metropolis, head quarters, the court, that part of a town where the authorities reside, &c., இராச தானி. 4. A region or part of the body. (See அடித்தலம்.) 5. Land under cultivation, commonly designated by some peculiarity, as having trees, hills, rocks, &c., பயிர்த்தலம். (c.) 6. The earth, பூமி. 7. The world in general, either of the fourteen worlds, உலகப்பொது. 8. A place of refuge, புகலிடம். 9. [in composition.] Identity, as பூதலம், the earth itself, கைத்தலம், the hand, செவித்தலம், the ear, கண்தலம், the eye, &c. தலத்திலேகாரியமேறிவிட்டது. The matter is known to the prince, the authorities, &c. [prov.] ஒருதலத்திலேயிறங்கிவிட்டார்கள். They have attained the shore, they have become settled. தலசுத்தி, s. Cleansing a place. 2. A three-fold class of elementary fire is given in சதுரகராதி. 1. உயிரி லுள்ளதீ. principle of fire in the sentient soul, and animal body, being a source of warmth, and energy or principle of fire in the stomach, assisting digestion, causing appetite and hunger. It is seated in the peritoneum, 3. சினத்திலெழுந்தீ, fiery principle developing itself in anger. Instead of the first, other authorities give காமத்தீ, the heat or fire of venereal appetite.-Note 2. A three-fold class of sacred fire, வேதாக்கினி, is also given. 1. காருகபத்தியம், the sacrificial fire of the Brahmanical houesholder, received from his ancestors. and kept alive. 2. தட்சிணாக்கினியம், a fire kindles from the standing fire on the southern side of the house, &c. 3. ஆக வனீயம், consecrated fire, taken from the standing fire, for sacrificial purposes. தீக்கஞ்சி, s. A kind of camphor. See தீபக்கொடிச்சி. தீக்கடன், s. (sometimes தீக்கருமம்.) The duties of the son of heir to one deceased, such as cremation and other funeral rites performed with fire. தீக்கடைகோல், s. Sticks for producing fire by friction. See கடைகோல். தீக்கதிக்கும்பச்சை, s. A precious stone, as நாகப்பச்சை. தீக்கதிர், s. A smith's poker, உலையா ணிக்கோல். (R.) தீக்கரண்டி, s. A little cup or bowl for taking up fire, தீயெடுக்குங்கருவி. தீக்கல், s. Flint, தீத்தட்டிக்கல். தீக்காய, inf. (com. குளிர்காய.) To warm one's self at the fire. தீக்குடுக்கை, s. See குடுக்கை. தீக்குதிக்க, inf. To leap into a pit of fire for self-destruction, as தீக்குளிக்க. தீக்குருவி, s. The Ostrich. See தழல் விழுங்கி. தீக்குவெறுங்குகை, s. Soap, சவுக்காரம். (R.) தீக்குழி, s. A pit with coals of fire on which persons walk. தீக்குழிபாய, inf. As தீக்குளிக்க. 2. To pass through burning coals, as a ceremony. தீக்குளிக்க, inf. A vessel for fire carried on one's head in performance of a vow. தீத்தட்டிக்கல், s. [prov.] (sometimes தீத்தட்டி.) A flint. தீத்தாங்கி, appel. n.. A fire-fender, தீம றைக்கும்பலகை. தீத்திரள், s. The deluge of fire, வடவா முகாக்கினி. தீத்தீண்டல், v. noun. s. A marriage ceremony, ஒருசடங்கு. தீத்தெய்வம், s. The god of fire. தீநா, s. [in seamen's language.] A lighted torch, held up in a vessel, or on shore, as a signal, அடையாளப்பந்தம். தீப்பறக்க, inf. To flash as fire, to be red hot. (c.) தீப்பற்ற, inf. To kindle, as fire. தீப்பொறி, s. A spark of fire. தீப்போட, inf. To set fire to any thing. தீமுறுகல், s. A kind of prepared arsenic, ஓர்பாஷாணம். தீயிறைக்க, inf. To belch fire. 2. To persecute with wrath. தீயெச்சம், s. See எச்சம். தீவட்டி--தீவத்தி, s. [prop. தீவர்த்தி.] A torch, a flambeau. (c.) தீவட்டிக்காரன், s. Torch-bearer. தீவட்டிக்கொள்ளை, s. Plundering one's house, as robbers with torches. தீவட்டிபிடிக்க, inf. To carry a torch. தீவலஞ்செய்தல், v. noun. Worshipping fire, as in the marriage ceremonies, by passing around it to the right, அக் கினிப்பிரதட்சணஞ்செய்தல். தீவளர்க்க, inf. To kindle or argument a fire, more especially the sacred fire as one of the duties of the Brahmanical house-holder, or a fire for a widow to plunge into. தீவளர்ப்போர், appel. n. Brahmans. தீவறை, s. [prov.] A hole dug in the ground for a fire, குழியடுப்பு. தீவிழ, inf. To be consumed by fire, as form heaven; used in cursing, or lively description. தீவிளங்கும்வயிரம், s. Ambergris, மீன ம்பர். Fordableness, ford, தாண்டுதுறை.-- The நிலை, (attitudes) in archery are; 1. பைசாசம், standing with one leg straight and the other bent, as devils are said to stand; 2. மண்டலம், standing with both knees bent out; 3. ஆலீடம், standing with the right knee bent out, and the left foot advanced; 4. பிரத்தியாலீடம், standing with the left knee bent and the right foot advanced. (சது.)--Note. Some authorities give a fifth posture, சமபாதம், standing with the feet even. நிலையுரியாய்ச்சீலையையுரிந்தான். He stripped or made himself naked. நிலையைவிட்டால்நீச்சு. If the fordable depth be left, one must swim--videlicet, give not up a certainty for an uncertainty. நிலைகலங்க, inf. [prov.] Primitive, or native soil, as distinguished from கொட்டுமண், made ground. நிலைமண்டிலஆசிரியப்பா, s. One of the four species of ஆசிரியப்பா. See Beschi's Shen-Tamil Gram. p. 85. நிலைமண்டுதல், v. noun. Making a long stay in a place from home. 2. Sticking closely to a place, as a person, or animal. நிலைமாறுதல், v. noun. Changing place, principles or religion, being proselyted, இடமாறுதல். 2. [in gram.] Being changed in place--as letters, in words, as வைகாசி for வைசாகி, the latter being according to the original, சொல்லினெழுத்துமா றுதல். நிலைமொழி, s.
