akkiṉi (p. 4) s. Fire, தீ. 2. The god of fire and regent of the south-east, அக்கி னிபகவான். (See திக்குபாலகர்.) 3. (M. Dic.) The plant செங்கொடிவேலி. There are reckoned different kinds of அக்கினி, (a.) ஆயுரு வேதாக்கினி, of three kinds, for preparing medicines, as கமலாக்கினி, காடாக்கினி, தீபாக் கினி, which see. (b) Three other kinds called வேதாக்கினி for sacrificial purposes, as, காருகபத்தியம், தக்கணாக்கினியம், ஆகவனீயம். See தீ. (c.) The fire which will consume the world, காலாக்கினி. Wils. p. 6. AGNI. அக்கினிகணம், s. The same as தீக்கணம், an inauspicious measure. See கணம். (p.) அக்கினிகர்ப்பம், s. A spark. 2. A crystal with fabulous qualities. 3. A decayed cuttle-fish bone, Os sepi&ae;, கட னுரை. அக்கினிகலை, s. Breath coming from the nostrils, in சரசாத்திரம். அக்கினிகோத்திரம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். 2. One of the princely races. அக்கினிக்கட்டு, s. Restraining the power of fire by magic. அக்கினிக்கண்ணன், s. A fiery man, one having a terrible countenance. அக்கினிசன்மன், s. One born of fire, Skanda. See அக்கினிபூ. அக்கினிசாந்தி, s. [in astrology.] Offerings to fire; this is done with ghee, plantains, cakes, &c., after repeating an incantation one hundred and eight times to avert evil from அக்கினிதேவன். These offerings are made particularly at the time of marriage and of doing penance. அக்கினிசாலம், s. Tricks or artifices made by the agency of fire. அக்கினிச்சிலம், s. A plant, Gloriosa superba, L., கார்த்திகைக்கிழங்கு. அக்கினிச்சேர்வை, s. [prov.] A blister-plaster. அக்கினிட்டோமம்--அக்கினிஷ் டோமம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். அக்கினித்தம்பம்--அக்கினிஸ்தம்பம், s. A pillar of fire. 2. Stopping the power of fire by magic. 3. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். அக்கினித்தம்பன், s. Siva as a column of fire. See தம்பம். அக்கினித்திரயம், s. The aggregate of the three fires maintained by the Brahmin householder, the Garhapatya, காருகபத்தியம், Dakshanagniyam, தட்சணாக் கினியம், and Ahavaneya, ஆகவனியம். See தீ. அக்கினித்திராவகம், s. Fire-water --such as nitric acid, &c. அக்கினிநாள்--அக்கினிநட்சத்திரம், s. [astrol.] An inauspicious nakshatra or day. There are three in a year, viz., when the sun is in the last quarter of the second nakshatra, பரணி, when in the 3d nakshatra, கார்த்திகை, and when in the 1st quarter of the 4th nakshatra, உரோகணி. அக்கினிபஞ்சகம், s. Danger of fire as an astrological result of the aggregate of five items. அக்கினிபயம், s. [in calendars.] Danger or fear of fire. அக்கினிப்பிரவேசம், s. Entering into or passing through fire, as a religious act. அக்கினிப்பிழம்பு, s. A body or flame of fire. அக்கினிப்பிளப்பு, s. A volcano, volcanic eruption. அக்கினிமண்டலம், s. The seat of fire in the system--the abdomen. அக்கினிமந்தம், s. Indigestion. அக்கினிமலை, s. A volcanic mountain. அக்கினிமிதிக்க, inf. To tread on fire, one of the thirty-two kinds of selftorture. அக்கினிமூலை, s. The south-east region. அக்கினியாதேயம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம், sacrifices. அக்கினியாஸ்திரம், s. A kind of arrow, ஓரத்திரம், (c.) அக்கினியோகம், s. An inauspicious conjunction of the days of the week with the tithi திதி, as follows: 1. When the 5th or 11th tithi, Lunar day (திதி) occurs on Monday. 2. When the 5th tithi occurs on Wednesday. 3. When the 6th or 9th occurs on Thursday. 4. When the 8th or 1th occurs on Friday. 5. When the 9th or 11th occurs on Saturday. 6. When the 12th occurs on Sunday. 18) *

aṟu (p. 33) கிறது, ந்தது, ம், அற, v. n. To be parted, detached, separated; to break as a rope, அறுபட. 2. To cease, become extinct, perish, end, vanish, அழிய. 3. To be decided, ended, தீர. (c.) அற, inf. [used adverbially.] With a verb it expresses; 1. Wholly, entirely, quite, முழுதும். 2. Intensely, excessively, மிகவும். 3. Negation, being without, as குற்றமற, without fault. அறச்செட்டுமுழுநஷ்டம். Selling things too dearly will cause entire loss; i. e. avarice causes loss. அறப்படித்தான். He has learnt all perfectly. எழுத்தறவாசி. Read with distinct articulation. அறக்கட்ட, inf. To tie tightly, இறுகக்கட்ட. 2. To monopolize, ஒருமிக்கக் கொள்ள. அறக்காய, inf. To be over-dried, over-boiled, over-heated. அறக்கூட்ட, inf. To sweep clean or thoroughly. அறக்கூர்மை, s. Excessive sharpness as of a writing style. அறச்சிவப்பு, s. Deep red, extremely red. அறச்சிறியது, appel. n. The smallest. அறப்பாடல், v. noun. [commonly, அறம்பாடல்.] Composing poetry containing imprecations or spells.--Note. Verses of this kind are supposed sometimes to be made without design, and thus to injure the maker and others. அறப்பார்க்க, inf. To examine thoroughly, sift. 2. To take measures to defeat, ruin or injure one by defamation. அறமிகுந்தால், v. part. At most, at the utmost, by any means, with the greatest effort. அறமிகுந்துவந்தாலும்வரட்டும். If it must come (if no effort will avert it) let it come. அறவிளக்க, inf. To polish thoroughly. அறவூத--அறவைக்க, inf. To refine metals by fire, புடமிட. அறாவிலை, s. An exorbitant price. அறுகுறை, s. A headless body, கவந்தம். அறுந்தருணம், s. Emergency, exigency. அறுந்தொகை, s. A sum, number, &c. in dividing, in which there is no remainder. அறுவாய், s. The parting made in sawing a piece of timber. 2. The opening of a cut or wound. 3. A junction, a conjunction of two periods of time, extremity, end. 4. Deficiency, what is wanted to complete a whole; [ex அறு, parted, et வாய், opening.] அறுவாய்நிறைந்தவயிர்மதி. The bright moon whose waning is restored. அற்றறுதி, s. A complete end, entire ruin. அற்றறுதிபற்றறுதியாய்விட்டது. All communion is withdrawn. அற்றான், s. A poor man, தரித் திரன், 2. A sage, முனிவன். அற்றுப்போக, inf. To be lost, to cease to be. தடையற, inf. [used adverbially.] Without impediment. அறவு, v. noun. Cessation, ceasing, extinction. 2. Parting, separation, breach. அறவுளி, s. Incantations performed over a sick person in order to restore him. 2. Cessation, end, முடிவு. அறுதல், v. noun. Finishing, liquidating a debt. 2. s. A broken thread, string, rope, bandage, &c. அறுந்திருப்பது. 3. A mean, despicable or faulty person, உதவாதவன் அந்த அறுதலையிங்கேவரவிடலாகாது, You must not allow that vagabond to be here. தாம்புமறுதல் தோண்டியும்பொத்தல். A broken rope and a leaky water-pot. அறுதலி, s. A widow, கைம்பெ ண்; [ex அறுதல், being plucked off (the marriage jewel), et இ, fem. termination; or அறு, torn off, et தலி, contracted from தாலி, the badge of marriage.] அறுதலிமகனுக்கங்கமெல்லாஞ்சேஷ்டை. The son of a widow is mischievous throughout his whole frame. அறுதி, v. noun. End, close, termination, முடிவு. 2. Decision, decisiveness, determination--as a decisive sale, entire renunciation of a title to landed property, தீர்ப்பு. 3. s. The purchaser's possession or title to property purchased, விற்கிரயச்சீட்டு. 4. Absence, non-existence, இல்லாமை. 5. Death, சாவு. அறுதியாய்ப்போயிற்று. It is settled, completed, ended. அறுதியிட்டுச்சொன்னான். He spoke decisively. நமக்குக்கிடைத்தது நமக்கறுதி. Thus much is realized and we shall not have to part with it. அந்தப்பழக்கத்தையறுதியாய்விட்டுவிட்டேன். I have relinquished that custom entirely. அறுதிக்கரை, s. The proper and just division or distribution of land. அறுதிச்சாதனம்--அறுதியுறுதி, s. A deed of transfer, அறுதிச்சீட்டு. அறுதிச்சொல், s. A decisive word or sentence. அறுதிப்பங்கு, s. What is given in full of all demands, a final allotment. அறுதிப்பாடு, s. Being accomplished, finished, decided. அறுதியிட, inf. To determine, to point a day, &c. 55)

āṭu (p. 38) s. A goat, sheep, (the word is common to both,) அசம். (c.) 2. The sign Aries of the zodiac, மேடவிராசி. 3. Victory, success, வெற்றி. (p.) ஆடுதின்னாப்பாலை, s. A plant, (lit.) that which the goat will not eat, புழுக்கொல்லி, Aristolochia bracteata, L. See பாலை. ஆடுமாடு, s. Cattle, the mixed multitude of cow and sheep kinds. The varieties are காட்டாடு, a wild sheep; குறும் பாடு, a crump-horned, fleecy sheep; கொடி யாடு, வெள்ளாடு or காராடு, a long legged sheep or goat; செம்மறியாடு, a reddish sheep; பள்ளையாடு, a prolific goat or goat of low size, and வரையாடு, a mountain sheep. ஆட்டிறைச்சி, s. Mutton. ஆட்டுக்கடா, s. A he goat or ram, ஆணாடு. ஆட்டுக்கடாத்தானம், s. The gift of a he goat, with money, to avert or counteract the evil effects of an unpropitious planetary influence--made to a Brahman who is to offer incantations for the party for a certain number of days. ஆட்டுக்கல், s. The bezoar of the sheep, பாஷாணத்தொன்று. ஆட்டுக்கால், s. The அடம்பு creeper. ஆட்டுக்காற்கல், s. Coral stone, கொக்கைக்கல். ஆட்டுக்கிடை, s. A sheep-fold. ஆட்டுக்குட்டி, s. A lamb or kid. ஆட்டுச்செவிப்பதம், s. A certain immature stage in the growth of the kernel of the cocoanut, the maturest state in which the இளநீர் can be eaten, தேங்காய்வழுக்கைப்பருவம். 9)

ālātti (p. 42) s. [in poetry, sometimes contr. to ஆலத்தி.] The ceremony of waving lighted camphor, to avert the blight of the eyes of unlucky persons, on marriage or other special occasions; also in front of the idol, after the procession, before it is taken into the temple. The term is applied both to the light, &c. waved, and the waving--as ஆரதி. ஆலாத்திகாட்ட, inf. To wave the above offering. ஆலாத்தித்தட்டு, s. The salver in which the ஆலாத்தி is waved. 2. One of the decks in a ship. ஆலாத்தியெடுக்க, inf. To take lighted camphor, &c. before the idol and wave it round; also before a newmarried couple, &c. 15) *

kaṉṉikai (p. 102) s. A virgin undefloured, a girl unmarried, கன்னிமையழிவில்லாள். 2. The five கன்னிகை, viz.: அகலிகை, the wife of கௌதமன்; துரோபதை, the wife of the பஞ்ச பாண்்டவர் or five brothers, sons of the king பாண்டு; சீதை, the wife of இராமன்; தாரை the wife of வாலி; and மண்டோதரி, the wife of இரா வணன். 3. (p.) The pericarp of a lotus, தாம ரைப்பூங்கொட்டை. Wils. p. 196. KARNIKA. 4. A flower-bud, பூவரும்பு. (p.) கா காத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To keep, preserve. மானங்காத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To preserve one's self-respect, character, dignity. காவாமல், neg. ver. part. [vul. காக் காமல்.] Not keeping. தன்னைக்காக்க--தற்காக்க, inf. To keep one's self, to act so as to avoid blame, scandal, &c. காத்தல், v. noun. Defending, guarding, &c. காப்பு, v. noun. Preservation, defence, guard, protection, cherishing, பாது காப்பு. 2. Watching, caution, vigilance, காவல். 3. Warding off, guarding against, இரட்சிப்பு. 4. s. An amulet, இரட்சாபந்தன ம். 5. A bangle or bracelet,கைக்காப்பு. 6. A bandage tied round the arm, in token of a vow for hearing a sacred book read at a temple, keeping a feast, &c.-serving also as an amulet for the time, and as a monitory to practise abstinence and other required duties, to abstain from ceremonial pollutions, &c.-- also tied on the arms of a newly-married couple for four days, who are to keep apart for this time--also on the candidates for initiation by the Guru, மஞ்சள்நூ ற்காப்பு. 7. The invocation at the commencement of all poems, imploring the protection, aid, blessing of the god worshipped by the author, and often of others, தெய்வவணக்கங்கூறுங்காப்பு. 8. The arm-ring of the Guru, worn on the right arm as an amulet on special occasions, கோயிற்குருவணியுங்காப்பு. 9. A string tied round medical plants with incantations to avert evil effects in their use,மூலிகைக் குக்கட்டுங்காப்பு. 1. (p.) A surrounding wall, a fortification, a fence, a hedge, &c., மதில். 11. A door, கதவு. 12. Sacred ashes worn as an amulet, திருநீறு. 13. Clothes, ஆடை. காப்புக்கட்டில்லாமலெல்லாருமுள்ளேவரலாமா. Is it proper for all to come in without restraint? கன்னிகாதானம்--கன்னியாதானம், s. kirakam (p. 109) s. A house, a mansion, or palace, வீடு, Wils. p. 295. GRUHA. 2. A planet, கோள். Wils. p. 34. GRAHA. The planets in the Hindu system are nine, called நவக் கிரகம், viz.: 1. ஆதித்தன் or ஞாயிறு, the sun. 2. சோமன் or திங்கள், the Moon. 3. அங்காரகன் or செவ்வாய், Mars. 4. புதன், Mercury. 5. பிரகற்பதி--பிரகஸ்பதி or வியாழன், Jupiter. 6. சுக்கிரன் or வெள்ளி, Venus. 7. சனி, Saturn. 8. இராகு, Caput draconis. 9. கேது, Cauda draconis. The last two are considered visible in eclipses of the sun and moon, இராகு being, black, and கேது red. (See under கோள்.) 3. Relation in the order of time between a vocal and an instrumental sound -- the one immediately preceding or immediately following the other; one of the ten தாளப்பிரமாணம். அவனைக்கிரகம்பிடித்தாட்டுகிறது. An evil planet is exerting its influence on him. கிரகக்கழிப்பு, v. noun. Dispelling the evil influences of planets by appropriate ceremonies, கிரகசாந்தி. கிரகங்கழிக்க, inf. To perform a ceremony to dispel disease, &c., supposed to be induced by a malignant planet, in which clay images, made for the occasion representing the planets to be appeased, are worshipped, offerings of fruits, &c., being presented, and then all cast out in a cross road, கிரகசாந்திசெய்ய. கிரகசாத்திரம், s. Science of the planets. கிரகசாந்தி, s. A ceremony to counteract or mitigate the malignant effects of planets on one's person or affairs, கிரகக் கழிப்பு. கிரகசாந்திபண்ண, inf. To perform ceremonies for counteracting the evil effects of planets. கிரகசாரம்--கிரககதி, s. Planetary motion. 2. Planetary ephemeris. 3. The phenomena of the planets in their process. 4. Ill luck (Rott.) அவனைப்பிடித்தகிரகசாரவேளைஅப்படிப்பண்ணிற் று. He acted according to his ill fate. கிரகசெபம், s. [lit.] A planetary garland. The position of two or more planets following each other in their proper order, and in the order of the signs. கிரகவக்கிரம, s. The retrogression of a planet. 2. kōṇu (p. 150) கிறது, கோணினது, ம், கோண, v. n. (Sa. Kon'a, crooked.) To be crooked, bent, curved, angular, serpentine, வளைய. 2. To be or become awry, oblique, aslant, askant, கோணலாயிருக்க. (c.) 3. To deviate, diverge, or turn out of the proper course, நெறிபிறழ. 4. To be warped or discouraged in mind; to be changed--as circumstances, மாறுபட. முதற்கோணினால் முற்றுங்கோணும். If the beginning goes wrong, all will be wrong. This is superstitiously believed. கோணிக்கோணிகொடுப்பதிலுங் கோணாமற்காணி கொடுப்பதுஉத்தமம். It is better to give a little (காணி) with a good will than much (கோணி) with reluctance. கோணக்கோணஇழுக்க, inf. To distort the limbs, features, &c., as cramps, convulsion, &c. கோணிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To give unwillingly. (c.) முகத்தைக்கோணவைக்க, inf. To avert the countenance. 2. To make a wry face. முகங்கோண, inf. To look sour, harsh. கோணல், v. noun. Crookedness, wryness, obliquity, deviation, deffection, வளைவு. 2. A hump; a hump-backed person, கூன். 3. Obliquity of mind, deceit, guile, மாறுபாடு (சது.) கோணல்குணங்கல், v. noun. Uneasiness of mind. canti (p. 159) s. A joining, junction, meeting, union, combination, இசைப்பு. 2. The meeting or junction of two or more roads, rivers, &c., or the place of such meeting, சந்திக்குமிடம். 3. The joining of words, and the changes of letters by elision, reduplication, and substitution in the coalescence of words with each other, or in the addition to a word of particles expressing case, or in the formation of derivatives from a primitive, விகுதிமுதலிய வற்றின்புணர்ச்சி. 4. The intervals of morning and evening twilight, especially the latter, regarded as the union of the day and night, மாலைநேரம்; thus அந்திசந்தி, morning and evening. (c.) 5. A period at the expiration of each yuga, connecting it with the following, and occupying 1/12 of each, during which a gradual change takes place in the world, introductory to the peculiarities of the succeeding yuga; also a period of the same length, as the Satya yuga at the end of each Manvantara and of each Kalpa, யுகசந்தி. Division of time in a day, especially meal time--as ஒருசந்தி, one meal, it being fast-day. (c.) 1. [loc.] Juncture, crisis, a critical point of time, தறுவாய். சந்திகாவலன், s. [prov.] As அந்திகாவ லன், which see. சந்திக்கரை, s. The place where several roads or rivers meet. (c.) சந்திபண்ண--சந்திமுடிக்க, inf. To perform he daily private worship, morning, noon and evening. (p.) சந்திப்பாடு, v. noun. A mishap supposed to be caused by a malignant spirit in a cross way, or other haunted place. சந்திமறிக்க, inf. [loc.] to avert the displeasure of malignant divinities, in time of epidemics, by presenting them cooling offerings at cross roads, and thus to stop their progress into the country. சந்திமிதிக்க, inf. [prov.] To pass across way at an auspicious time, as after recovering from sickness, especially from the small pox, on first going out. சந்திமிதிப்பிக்க, inf. To cause a child to walk the first time on the 6th month in places where two or more ways meet. சந்தியாகாலம், s. The period of evening twilight, மாலைநேரம். 2. The three seasons of stated worship. (See சந்தி.) 3. The interval between one yuga and another, யுகசந்தி; [ex Sa. Sandhya.] W. p. 89. சந்தியாகாலகருமம், s. Evening devotion. (R.) சந்தியாராகம், s. The redness of the sky at sun-set. (R.) சந்தியாவந்தனம்--சந்தியாவந்தனை, s. [prov. சந்திவந்தனை.] Worship at any of the three stated periods; [ex வந்தனை, worship.] சந்தியிலிருக்க, inf. [prov.] To be ruined, to be driven into the street. சந்தியில்வைக்க, inf. To ruin a person, (lit.) to drive him into the streets. சந்திவிக்கிரகம், s. Forming a friendship with enemies to compass their ruin; one of the modes recommended for dealing with enemies. (p.) சந்தியிற்கொண்டுவர, inf. [prov. fig.] To expose a person to ridicule and shame (lit.) to bring to the street. முச்சந்தி, s. The meeting of three roads. நாற்சந்தி, s. The meeting of four roads or streets. சொற்சந்தி, s. One word combining with another in sense. சந்திவழு, s. Impropriety in the use of grammatical sandhi. The three grammatical sandhis as applied to words of Sanscrit origin are, 1. தீர்க்கசந்தி. 2. குண சந்தி. 3. விருத்திசந்தி. To these a fourth, ஆ திவிருத்திசந்தி is added. (நன்.) சந்திகாரியம், s. caṉi (p. 173) s. The planet Saturn, the most, malignant, in astrological influence of all the planets, ஓர்கிரகம். 2. Saturday, சனிக்கி ழமை. W. p. 829. S'ANI. 3. (fig.) A person of ill omen whose company is dangerous, சனிபோன்றவன்.--Note. The different positions and influences of the planet are. (1.) அஷ்டமசனி. See under அஷ்டம். (2.) நாலாமிடத்துச்சனி, called also அர்த்தாஷ்டம சனி. Saturn in the fourth sign from that of one's birth, where his influence is less malignant. (3.) இரண்டாமிடத்துச்சனி, or பாதச் சனி. Saturn in the sign nest to that in the ascendant, where his influence is indicative of eloquence and oratory. (4.) ஏழ ரையாண்டுச்சனி. Saturn's 7?? years' evil influence called ஏழரை, and divided into three parts, மங்குசனி, பொங்குசனி, மரணச்சனி which see. As saturn is 2?? years in each sign of the zodiac, it occupies 7?? years for three signs, so that a man living ninety years would pass three times through all these periods. See ஏழரை. (5.) பன்னிரண்டாமிடத்துச் சனி. Saturn in the 12th sign from that in the ascendant. (6.) சன்மச்சனி. Saturn in the ascendant. (7.) மகத்துச்சனி. Saturn in the first lunar asterism of Leo called மகம், indicating great calamities. (8.) மீனச்சனி. Saturn in the Pices, considered unpropitious in its influence. இவனெனக்கு மகத்துச்சனிபோலிருக்கிறான். He is a great enemy to me. சனிகழிய--சனியன்றொலைய, inf. To expire or end as any period of saturn's malign influence on a person. 2. To terminate as a cause of calamity, evil, &c. சனிக்கிழமை--சனிவாரம், s. Saturday. சனிக்கிழமைவிரதம், s. [also சனிவிர தம்.] A fast on Saturdays, to avert the evil influences of Saturn, when, before eating, crows, emblems of Saturn, are fed. 2. A fast in honor of Vishnu. சனிபகவான்--சனீச்சுரன், s. The regent of Saturn. சனிபிடித்தல், v. noun. Being seized by Saturn, brought under his malignant influence. 2. (fig.) Being assailed by adverse circumstances, துன்புறுதல். சனிமுழுக்கு, v. noun. Bathing on Saturdays. சனிமூலை, s. The north east, (lit.) Saturn's quarter, வடகிழக்கு. சனியன், s. Saturn the planet. 2. An unlucky person, associating with whom may bring evil. 3. A troublesome person, animal, thing, circumstance, &c. இவன் எனக்குச் சனியனாய் வந்தான். He is a Saturn (an inauspicious person) to me. சனிவேதை, s. The influence of Saturn; pain, சனிதோஷம். (R.) சனிக்காசு, s. A small coin paid to the master, by the scholars, on Saturdays. சனிப்பாட்டு, s. [loc.] A song or poem sung by the boys of a school, near the end of a year, to obtain presents from their parents, and others, for the master. சனியெண்ணெய், s. The oil collected by scholars, from their parents, for their teacher, on Saturdays. 66) *

cuṇṇāmpu (p. 193) s. Lime, chunam, சுட்ட சுண்ணம். 2. Macerated lime, குழைசாந்து. (c.) மிஞ்சினசுண்ணாம்பையு மெலிந்தராசாவையுங் கைவி டப்படாது. Neither slight the remainder of chuman nor a decayed king. சுண்ணாம்படிக்க, inf. To white wash. சுண்ணாம்பரைக்க, inf. To grind plaster. சுண்ணாம்புக்கட்டி, s. Macerated and dried chunam. 2. Dried mortar. சுண்ணாம்புக்கரண்டகம், s. Small box for lime to eat with betel. See கரண் டகம். சுண்ணாம்புக்காரை, s. Over-laying with plaster. See காரை. சுண்ணாம்புக்காரன், s. A lime-burner or seller. சுண்ணாம்புக்காளவாய், s. (Sometimes சுண்ணாம்புச்சூளை.) A lime-kiln. சுண்ணாம்புகுத்த--சுண்ணாம்பிடிக்க, inf. To pound chunam and make it into mortar. சுண்ணாம்புக்கல், s. Limestone; also when burnt and unslacked to be used for whitewash. சுண்ணாம்புக்குட்டான், s. [prov.] A toddy man's chunam basket. சுண்ணாம்புசலிக்க, inf. To sift lime. சுண்ணாம்புதடவ, inf. To daub with chunam. சுண்ணாம்புத்துடுப்பு, s. [prov.] A small spatula for taking chunam from the சுண்ணாம்புக்கரண்டகம். சுண்ணாம்புபூச, inf. To plaster with chunam. சுண்ணாம்புப்பதனி, s. Sweet toddy prepared with chunam. See பதநீர். சுண்ணாம்புப்பொருக்கு, s. Loose flakes, scales of chunam. சுண்ணாம்புப்பற்று, s. Adhesion of chunam to articles on which it has been rubbed. 2. [prov.] Sediment at the bottom of green ginger juice. சுண்ணாம்புதாளிக்க, inf. To shake lime for chewing with betel. (R.) சுண்ணாம்படைதல், v. noun. Settling of lime at the bottom when put in toddy. சுண்ணாம்புப்பட்டை, s. Stripes of white wash with செம்மண்பட்டை on the walls of native houses, to avert the evil eye. சங்குச்சுண்ணாம்பு, s. Lime of conch shells. முத்துச்சுண்ணாம்பு, s. Lime of pearls-said to be luxury of kings with their betel-leaf. நத்தைச்சுண்ணாம்பு, s. Lime of snail shells. சிப்பிச்சுண்ணாம்பு, s. Lime of oyster shells. சீமைச்சுண்ணாம்பு, s. Chalk. குழைசுண்ணாம்பு, s. Macerated lime for plastering. கற்சுண்ணாம்பு--சுக்கான்சுண்ணாம்பு, s. Stone lime. கிளிஞ்சிற்சுண்ணாம்பு, s. To curb, to limit, to restrain, to restrict, அடக்க. 7. To oppose, to contradict, to interdict; to rebut, to repel, எதிர்க்க. 8. To frustrate, to thwart, குலைக்க. 9. To check a soul in its evil tendencies, as, to transmigration, &c., and bring it to bliss; to overrule, as divine grace, for the benefit of the soul. தடுத்துச்சொல்ல, inf. Warding off, averting, நீக்கல். 6. Evasion, prevarication, புரட்டு. 7. A dexterous performance or man&oe;uvre, உபாயம். 8. Stalk of grain, பயிர்த்தாள். 9. Striking against, collision, முட்டுதல். 1. Frustration, thwarting, விலக்கு. 11. Opposition, check, impediment, தடை. 12. Getting money by deception, swindling, பித்தலாட்டம். 13. (fig.) A cunning remark, a repartee, an insinuation, சூத்திரப்பேச்சு. 14. Patting, மெய்ப்பரிசத் திலொன்று. 15. Publishing by striking a gong, &c., தாளம்போடல்.--Note. In many of these meanings the word is used in cant. (c.) அவனுக்குநல்லதட்டு. He had a good profit. சாப்பாட்டுக்குஇப்போதுஅதிகதட்டு. Now a days, I am much straitened for food. ஒருதட்டுத்தட்டிவிட்டான். He has warded it off, acquitted himself well, given a gentle blow. ஒருதட்டுத்தட்டியிருக்கிறார். He has said something to frustrate the matter, or thrown in a word, &c. [prov.] தட்டிலும்வீச்சிலுங்காரியம்பார்க்க. To make a display and shift the expense on others. தட்டிலேவயிறுவளர்க்க. To support one's self at another's expense. தட்டுக்காரன், s. A rogue, a cunning fellow. 2. An evader, a prevaricator. தட்டுத்தட்ட, inf. To give a tap. 2. To evade. 3. To thwart or frustrate. 4. To act dexterously. தட்டுத்தடவல், v. noun. As தட்டல்த டவல், which see. தட்டாயிருக்க, inf. To be destitute, to be in straits. செலவுக்குத்தட்டாயிருக்கிறது. We are in want of the means of subsistence. தட்டுக்கொட்டு, v. noun. [prov.] Exterior show without accomplishing one's wish. 2. A bauble, gew-gaw. 3. Living by stratagem, &c. தட்டுத்தடக்கு, v. noun. Hesitation, impediment. தட்டுத்தடக்கில்லாமல்வாசிக்கிறான். He reads fluently. தட்டுத்தாவரம், s. [prov.] Resort, resource, refuge, புகலிடம். தட்டுப்பட, inf. To be hit, to be struck--commonly accidentally. 2. To be tapped or beaten as a drum, cymbal, &c. 3. To lack, to be wanting--as stores, money, rain, &c. 4. To be felt by contact. 5. To be stopped in progress, as a vehicle, a performer, &c., To be understood. அவன் என்கண்ணுக்குத்தட்டுப்படவில்லை. I have not seen him any where. இப்போதுதான்எனக்குத்தட்டுப்பட்டது. Now I understand it. தட்டுண்டுபோக, inf. To be beaten off, scattered. 2. To be all threshed out--as rape-seed. 3. To be thwarted, to fail, as an expected good. 4. To be upset, overturned. 5. To exchange commodities clandestinely, and fraudulently. தட்டுக்கெட, inf. To be greatly alarmed, to stand aghast. 2. The animal limps in walking. அவனையேதாங்கிக்கொண்டுதிரிகிறான். He pleases him, to gain his own purpose. அவன்கையைத்தாங்கு. Ward off his hand, his blow, &c. மறுமொழிச்சொல்லித்தாங்காது. There is no end of answering such questions. [prov.] சரீரந்தாங்காது. The constitution will not hear it. தாங்கித்தாங்கிப்பேசுகிறான். He speaks haltingly. மாடுகால்தாங்கித்தாங்கிவைக்கிறது. The bullock hobbles (by pain in the hoof). தாங்கத்தாங்கத்தலையிலேற. To become the more arrogant, the more kindness is shown. 2. To be supercilious on account of humble applications. மலையைமலைதாங்கவேண்டும்மண்ணாங்கட்டிதாங்கு மா. One moutain supports another, can a clod of earth do it? விஞ்சையிற்றாங்கினன் சடையன் வெண்ணெய்யிற் தஞ்சமென்றோர்களைத்தாங்குந்தன்மைபோல். A twisted or curled horn. See கொம்பு. திருகுகொம்பன், s. A beast with a curled horn. திருகுதாழை, s. A species of தாழை plant, ஓர்தாழை. திருகுதாளம், s. Artifice, trick, chicanery, மாறுபாடு. (c.) திருகுதாளக்காரன், s. (also திருகுதாளி, masc. and fem.) A knave, a trickish person. திருகுபனைமுகிழ், s. The whole upper integument of a palmyra fruit twisted off. See முகிழ். திருகுமணை--திருகரிவாள்மணை, s. [improp for துருவுமணை.] An instrument for crushing cocoa-nuts. திருகுமரம், s. A twisted or crooked tree. 2. A turnstile. திருகுமுகம், s. An averted, unfavorable countenance. திருகுமுகமாயிருக்க, inf. To be displeased so as to avert the face. 2. To form a favorable crisis, as a disease. திருகுவட்டம், s.
