atu (p. 12) pro. That thing, it, the thing remote from the speaker, அஃது. 2. A form of the sixth or possessive case singular, ஆறாவதனொருமையுருபு; as அவனதுகை, His hand. அதுவே. arumai (p. 26) s. Rareness, scarceness, scantiness, அபூர்வம். 2. Preciousness, desirableness, pre-eminence. மேன்மை. 3. Difficulty, laboriousness, வருத்தம். 4. Impossibility, unattainableness, கூடாமை. 5. Delicacy, சிறப்பு.--Note. As an adjective, மை is dropped before a consonant with a change of that, when required in combination, and அரு may be changed into அரிய with or without து, or the last vowel may be dropped, and the first lengthened as in ஆருயிர், precious life. அருங்கலைநாயகன், s. Buddha, the lord of eminent sciences, புத்தன். அருங்கலைவினோதன், s. one devoted to learning; one whose time is spent in cultivating the arts and sciences. அருங்கிடை, s. Extreme hunger from long abstinence, &c., பட்டிணி. அருங்கிடைகிடக்க, inf. To be in a starving condition. அருங்கேடன், s. One who is imperishable, who will always prosper. (குறள்.) 2. (c.) A very treacherous man, a profligate wretch. அருங்கோடை, s. Vehement heat. 2. Severe drought. அருஞ்சிறை, s. Rigorous servitude, கடுஞ்சிறை. (Ram.) 2. Hell, நரகம். அருநரகம், s. A cruel hell. அருநிலை, s. Difficult standing said of a ford when impassable. அருநிழல், s. A slight shade. அருநெறி, s. A narrow or difficult way. 2. Gate-way or entrance. அருந்தமிழ், s. Elegant Tamil. அருந்தவம், s. Rigid austerities. அருந்தவர், s. Ascetics. அருந்தூதன், s. A tormentor, one who inflicts pain, வேதனைசெய்வோன். அருமருந்து, s. Nectar, அமிர்தம். In classical works, this in the form அருமருந்தன்னபிள்ளை is contracted to அருமந்த, precious as nectar, as, அருமந்தபிள்ளை. A very dear child, அருமந்ததேர். A very costly chariot. அருமறை, s. The sacred Vedas. Ell. 145. 4. அருமறைக்கொடியோன், s. A name of Dronácharya, the military preceptor of the Pandavas and Kurus, because of the Vedic device on his banner. அருமைப்படுத்த, inf. To make scarce, hard, difficult. 2. To impart reluctantly, make much of. அரும்பண்டம், s. A rare article, choice wares, valuable commodity. அரும்பிணி, s. An incurable disease. (நாலடி.) Ell. 118. அரும்பூட்டு, s. [prov.] A girdle, waist-string, necklace, &c., so short as scarcely to be brought to meet, a string, rope, &c., so short as to be tied with difficulty, a bow-string so short as to be liable to break if brought up too far, any thing too little, too short, too narrow, &c., எட்டாப்பூட்டு. 2. Difficulty in settling a negotiation, agreement, &c., இணக்கக்கூடாமை. 3. Entanglement, ensnarement, மோசத்திலகப்படுகை. 4. Forced connection in language, clauses disconnected or not joined naturally, difficult or unnatural; construction, தொடர்ச்சி யின்மை. சொற்களையரும்பூட்டாய்த் தொடுத்துப்பேசினான். He spoke in an unconnected manner. அரும்பொருள், s. Excellent advice, hard doctrine, a rare or difficult meaning. 2. A choice or precious article. அருவினை, s. A great sin. அருவினைகளைந்து. The five great sins. தெய்வமொருவனென்றேத்தி யொருமித்திருந்தால் அருவினைகளைந்துமறும். The five great sins will be forgiven him who worships the one God with singleness of heart. (கம்பன்.) 5)

iṟngku (p. 57) கிறேன், இறங்கினேன், வேன், இறங்க, v. n. To descend, pass down a declivity or ladder, sink lower; to get down a tree, a precipice, &c.; to step down, alight from a horse, &c.; to crawl down, சரிய. 2. To descend voluntarily--as a bird, தாழலிறங்க. 3. To descend by degrees through air, water, or any other resisting medium--as leaves or other light substances; to fall or sink gradually or slowly; to fall--as rain; to flow down--as a torrent; to fall--as grain from the ear, மழைமுதலிய வையிறங்க. 4. To disembark, get out of a boat, or from one boat into another of smaller size, கப்பலினின்றிறங்க. 5. To be taken down, unladed, unladen, disburdened, சாமானிறங்க. 6. To fall or sink into the appropriate place--as a post into its hole, to be driven home--as a nail, உள்ளிறங்க. 7. To sink--as a denser body, to settle to the bottom--as earth in water, water in oil, &c., அமிழ. 8. To arrive at a place other than one's home, to pitch, alight, encamp --as an army. to halt, பாளயமிறங்க. 9. To get into the right road, நேர்வழியிலிறங்க. 1. To be brought down or reduced, தாழ்வடைய. 11. To abate--as fever commencing with the head and descending to the extremities, சுரமிறங்க. 12. To become reduced, or to descend--as bile in the system (which rising to the brain is supposed to cause mental derangement); hence to be cured of mental aberration, பித்தமிறங்க. 13. To subside--as animal poison in the system (which is supposed to descend from the head to the extremities), விடமிறங்க. கபாலநீர்கண்ணிலேயிறங்குகிறது. The humors of the head have descended into the eyes, causing cataract, depriving the person of sight, &c. ஒருதுறையிலிறங்கிவிட்டான். He has found a resting place; his mind is settled. இறங்காத்துறை, s. A place not convenient or proper for landing, or lodging. 2. (fig.) An improper marriage, connection, &c. இறங்குதுறை, s. A place of debarkation. 2. (fig.) Means, ways for effecting a thing, வழிவகை. இறங்குபொழுது, s. The time of sunset, சாய்பொழுது. இறங்குபொழுதிலேமருந்துகுடி. Take medicine when the sun declines; implying that the disease will thereby decline. இறங்குமிராசி, s. The six signs through which the sun passes in its southern course, சூரியனிறங்குமாறிராசிகள். இறக்கம், v. noun. Descending-as of food into the stomach; descent of a bird, a stream; debarkation from a boat, going down a ladder, &c., இறங்கு கை. 2. A descent, declivity, slope, declination, சரிவு. 3. A ford, இறங்குதுறை. 4. The drying up of the pustules in the small pox, measles and other similar diseases--so applied because it is supposed to begin at the head and to descend, அம்மைமுதலியவிறக்கம். 5. Paths and tracks of beasts in a jungle, மிருகங்கள் செல்வழி. நோயாளிக்குச்சோற்றிறக்கமில்லை. The patient is unable to swallow his food. இறக்கத்திலிருக்க, inf. To be in a low place, to be below. அவன்காரியம்இறக்கத்திலிருக்கிறது. His business is on the decline. இறங்கல், v. noun. The swelling of the glandula by an excess of wind, &c., அண்டமிறங்கல். 2. The subsiding of swelling, &c. from the head to the extremities, விக்கமிறங்கல். இறவு, v. noun. Lapse, passage, a place of descent, செல்கை. 5)

eṇṇu (p. 73) கிறேன், எண்ணினேன், வேன், எண்ண, v. a. To think, consider, imagine, suppose, நினைக்க. 2. To intend, resolve, determine, குறிக்க. 3. To count, reckon, compute, கணிக்க. 4. To guess, conjecture, estimate, surmise, உத்தேசிக்க. 5. To esteem, appreciate, respect, honor, &c., மதிக்க. 6. To deliberate, take counsel, ஆலோசிக்க. 7. To hope, expect, நம்ப. 8. To care, to be anxious, to be perplexed with thoughts, கவலைபப்பட. 9. To be elated, to be self-conceited, இறுமாக்க. 1. To consider seriously, weigh consequences, யோ சிக்க. எண்ணாதவெல்லாமெண்ணினான். He was musing and perplexed with many thoughts. உனக்குநாசகாலத்தையெண்ணியிருக்கிறார்கள். They are meditating thy destruction. இதையொருகுற்றமாயெண்ணுவார்களா. Will they regard this as a fault? எண்ணப்பட, inf. To be counted, reckoned. 2. To be esteemed, respected. எண்ணத்தொலையாதது--எண்ணப் படாதது, appel. n. That which cannot be counted. எண்ணாதகண்டன்--எண்ணாதநெஞ் சன், s. A very bold man, destitute of fear; a rash, or heedless man. எண்ணாதவன், s. A reckless person, a desperate man. பாவபுண்ணியங்களையெண்ணாதவன். One who has no regard either for virtue or vice. எண்ணாமற்பேச, inf. To speak without due regard to rank, station, &c., மதியாமற்பேச. 2. To speak without thought, யோசியாமற்பேச. எண்ணார், s. Enemies, பகைவர். (p.) எண்ணிப்பார்க்க, inf. To count, number. 2. To consider maturely, deliberate, to weigh in the mind. எண்ணிப்பேச, inf. To speak considerately or deliberately. எண்பட, inf. [prov.] To be discovered, to be caught, to be found out, அகப்பட. எண்ணல், v. noun. Calculation, reckoning, கணக்குச்செய்தல். 2. Astronomical calculation, கணித்தல். 3. Counting with the fingers in astronomical calculations, &c. See கைத்தொழில். எண்ணலர், s. Foes, enemies, பகைவர். (p.) எண்ணலளவை, s. Computation. எண்ணலளவையாகுபெயர், s. One of the four kinds of அளவையாகுபெயர், according to which a number is put for the thing numbered--as காலாலேநடந்தான், he walked on one-fourth (of his length); i. e. his leg, which is so called because it bears that proportion to individual stature. எண்ணிக்கை, v. noun. Regard, esteem, honor, estimation, reverence, மதிப்பு. 2. Number, numbering, கணிப்பு. --Note. This word is irregular in its formation. எண்ணிக்கைக்குப்பிறந்தபிள்ளைகள். Children who seem born only to make up a number, being of no estimation. எண்ணிக்கைக்குள்ளடங்காதது. That which is innumerable. சேவகரையெண்ணிக்கைசெய்கிறது. To muster soldiers. எண்ணிக்கைகொடுக்க, inf. To deliver an account of things, to give in the number. 41)

eṉ (p. 75) கிறேன், றேன், பேன், என்ன, v. a. To say, name, pronounce, express, do, indicate, either by words or signs, expressed, or implied, என்றுசொல்ல. This is the common form for quotation, in which sense it generally occurs in all its various uses. In the infinitive and other parts it is commonly found with one ன் only. என்கு. I say. என்கும். We say. என்ப--என்பர்--என்மர்--என்மனார்--என்றிசினோ ர். They say, they may say, some say, &c. அப்படியென்கிறான். So he says. 2. He does so (the speaker making the sign or sound intended). இல்லையென்கிறேன். I say no-implying impatience, displeasure, emphasis, &c. பணமில்லையென்கிறான். He says he has no money. போவென்கிறேன். I tell you to go, lit. I say go, and implying I have said so before. அவனைப்போவென்னப்போகிறான். When I say go, he goes. காமதேனுவென்கிறபசு. The cow (of the supernals) called Kamadhanu. நானென்னுமெண்ணம். Self conceit, consequence. என்பவன், appel. n. He who says so. 2. He who is called so. பெரியானென்பவன். Perian, or he who is called Perian. ஆவென்ன, inf. To open the mouth, lit. to say ஆ. ஈயென்ன, inf. To show the teeth, lit. to say ஈ. என்பிக்க, inf. To cause another to say, to prove, சொல்லுவிக்க. அதையவன்வாயினாலேயுமக்கென்பிப்பேன். I will prove it to you from his mouth. என்று. The gerund of the verb என், used instead of என the infinitive (which is the poetic usage in this connexion), it serves to end a quotation and to connect it with the following part of the sentence, in which case it often corresponds to the conjunction that, வினையெச்சம். அவனையடித்தேனென்றுசொன்னான். He said that he struck him, lit. he said, I struck him. Note 1st. In connexion with appropriate verbs, என்று, and என often mean to expect, to think, imagine, to suppose, to pretend, to desire, எண்ணுதல் or some such verb being implied; பணந் தெய்வமென்றுநடக்கிறான், he makes money his god; அதுபுகையென்றிருந்தேன், I thought it was smoke, I took it for smoke; அவர்வருவாரென்றிருக்கிறேன், I expect him to come; அவன்சொன்னானென்றுவந்தாயா, have you came because he told you?--Note 2d. According to நன்னூல், என்று and என are இடைச்சொல் or particles, with several specific uses, the other parts of the verb are or may be included. 1. With பெயர் or names; அழுக்காறெனவொரு பாவி, the sinner called envy. (குறள்.) 2. With குறிப்பு or symbolic forms; சிக்கென வூன்றியவேர், the root which has taken firm hold; திடீரெனவந்தான், he came suddenly. 3. With இசை or (imitative) sounds; ஒல்லெனவொலித்தது, it sounded ஒல்; அடுக் கு or repititive symbolic terms are included in this class; படபடென்றுநடுங்கி னான், he trembled (shook, shivered, &c.) greatly; சுஃஃறென்னுந்தண்டோட்டுப்பெண் ணை, the palmyras whose green leaves rustled (emitted the sound of சுஃஃறு). 4. With எண் enumeration, in which they are equivalent to the copulative conjunction; சாத்தனெனக்கொற்றனெனப்பூதனெ னமூவரும்வந்தார், Sattan, Kottan and Bhuta came; தேனென்றுபாலென்றுவமையில்லாமொழி, words unequalled (in sweetness) by honey or milk. 5. With பண்பு or symbolic terms expressive of quality and intensity; சிவேரெனச்சிவந்தது, it reddened to a crimson; வெள்ளெனவா, come in the grey of the morning; வெள்ளெனவி ளர்த்தது, it became very white.--Note 3d. என்று and என also serve to express similitude, like, as, &c.; புலியெனப்பாய்ந் தான், he sprang like a tiger; காந்தளெனக் கைநீட்டி, extending her காந்தள்-like hand. --Note 4th. என and என்று are also used to express pre-eminence, &c.; இன்னதென் றில்லை, it is no matter which; ஆரென்றுநி னைத்தாய், who do you suppose I am? I am not to be treated thus, &c., உயிரென் றுபார்க்கவில்லை, he does not (or did not) regard even life; அவனுக்கின்னாரென்றில்லை, it is no matter to him who; குருவென் றுபேணுகின்றிலன், he does not respect even the guru; எவ்வளவென்றில்லை, it is no matter how much. 2. How much soever, how little soever. 3. It is illimitable, undefined, the quantity is unknown; வாய்வயிறென்றுபார்க்கிறதில்லை, he does not give himself time to eat.--Note 5th. என and என்று are also used with reiterative symbolic terms; மடம்டென்றொலித்த து, it sounded மட, மட; அடியடியென்றடித் தான், he beat him soundly; தலைதலையென்ற டித்துக்கொண்டான், he beat his head greatly through rage, grief, despair, &c.; lit. saying, 'Head, head;' வாய்வாயென்றடிக்க, to beat one's mouth greatly--in sorrow, despair, &c.; எறியெறியென்றெறிந்தான், he threw many times; lit. he threw, saying, 'Throw, throw.'--Note 6th. என and என்று, with a dative imply, designed or appointed for, sacred or devoted to, for the sake of, &c.; சுவாமிக்கென்றுநேர்ந் தது, it is vowed (devoted) to God; தன்பிள்ளைக்கென்றுவைத்துக்கொண்டான், he kept it for his child; எனக்கென்றெடுக்கமாட் டேன், I will not take it for myself-Note 7th. The subjunctive என்றால் joined to verbs or used when verbs are implied forms the subjunctive of those verbs.--Note 8th. The subjunctive என் னில், poetically, என்னின், if, is contracted into எனில் and எனின், and in classical usage to எல் and என்: உம் joined to those forms makes them though; they are added to other verbs or to nouns; ஓரடி யென்கிலும்நட, walk, if it be but one step. 40)

eyil (p. 73) s. A fortress, wall, a fortification, மதில். 2. City, town, புரம். (p.) எயிலொருமூன்றுஞ்செற்றோன். Siva who destroyed the three aerial cities. எயில்காக்க, inf. To guard one's fort, &c. எயில்வளைக்க, inf. To besiege a fort, to surround a fort. எயிற்புறம், s. The parts outside of a fort. மூவெயில், s. [in mythology.] The three cities of the Asoors, built in the air one above another, of gold, silver and iron respectively, and destroyed by Siva, because they had abandoned his worship; on which occasion, he made Maha Meru his bow, and Vishnu his arrow for the execution of his purpose. திரிபுரம். (p.) 77)

ētu (p. 79) inter. pron. [neut. sing. from ஏ.] Which, what, why, wherefore, how, whence. 2. Whatever, whichever, any. உனக்கேதுவேணும். Which do you like? மகளேது, தாயேது, பெண்டிரேது. What is a daughter, what is a mother, what is a wife? (p.) அவனுன்னையப்படிப்பேசவேண்டியதுதேது. Why should he blame you so? அவனுக்கிங்கேதுபணம். Where is there money for him here? இவ்வனத்திலேகுடியேது. How can there be inhabitants in a desert like this? ஏதுவிதமும். By some means or other. ஏதுகாரியம்வந்தாலும். Whatever may happen. ஏதும். Any thing, whatever. கற்பகவிருட்சம் ஏதுந்தரும். The Kalpa tree [in Swerga] yields whatever is desired. சாப்பாட்டுக்கேதுமுண்டா. Have you any thing to eat? ஏதுந்தாரும். Give me something, help me ever so little. ஏதுங்கெட்டவன். A person of no worth, a good-for-nothing wretch. ஏதாவது--ஏதாகிலும்--ஏதாகுதல் --ஏதானாலும்--ஏதேனும்--ஏதென்றாலும். Something, whatever, ever so little. ஏதென்றால். For, because. ஏதோ. Something, somewhat, wherefore, per chance. 16)

ēṉ (p. 79) . Why? what? wherefore? a change of என். 2. An affix of entreaty, இரக்கப்பொருளைத்தருமிடைச்சொல். 3. The common termination of the first person sing. in verbs and appellatives, தன்மையொருமைவி குதி.--Note. ஏன் is the common form of answering to a call. It is also in some places used as a sign affixed to the name of the contracting party in the introduction of bonds. ஏனென்பாரில்லை. No one cares (for him); i. e. to afford him relief. 2. There is no one to defend him. ஏனென்றால். For, because, if it be asked why. ஏனையா. What, sir? ஏனோதானோவென்றிருக்க. To be careless. ஏன்வந்தாய். Why did you come? வாருமேன். [vul.] Do come, I pray you-probably a corruption of வாருமே. அதையேன் இதையேனென்கிறான். He will have nothing to do with the matter. 2. He rejects both. 3. He has a dislike to every thing worldly, being disposed to become an ascetic. கூப்பிட்டாலேனென்றுசொல்லு. If you are called, answer-lit. say ஏன். நான்வருவானேன். Why should I come? அவர்கள்போவானேன். Why should they go? In the last two examples, the verb is in the gerundial form--a finite verb being understood. 98)

oppāri (p. 82) s. Comparison, similarity, likeness, ஒத்தபாவனை. 2. A funeral elegy, lamentation or episode sung by women and abounding with comparisons between the deceased and other objects, அ ழுகையிலொப்பனையிடுகை. மக்களே போல்வர்கயவர்அவரன்னவொப்பாரியாங்க ண்டதில். The base among men are formed like others, we see no two classes of beings that so much resemble each other. (குறள்.) ஒப்பாரிகொள்ளுதல்--ஒப்பாரிபிடி த்தல், v. noun. Esteeming one as a near relation because of his resemblance to a deceased member of the family. ஒப்பாரிக்காரன், s. One so esteemed. ஒப்பாரிசொல்ல, inf. To sing a funeral elegy for a deceased relative. ஒப்பாரியிட்டழ, inf. To sing an elegy with wailing.--Note. This is frequently done with great pathos and the intensity of feeling is heightened by numerous references to the beauty and excellency of the deceased--as உன்பல் லழகின்பாவனையைப் பார்த்தநமன்விடானே, the regent of the dead, fascinated by the beauty of thy teeth, would not pass thee over. 15)

ōy (p. 84) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ஓய, v. a. To cease, leave off, to desist from action, &c., to rest, விட. 2. v. n. To become tired, become weary, to fail, become weak or infirm--as a member of the body, தளர. 3. To cease, end, முடிய. ஓயாமலிருக்க, inf. To be incessant, continual. ஓயாமல்வருகிறான். He comes incessantly. மரங்காய்த்தோய்தல், v. noun. Ceasing to bear fruit for the season. ஆய்ந்தோய்ந்துபார்த்தல், v. noun. Considering maturely, deliberating. எல்லாமோய்ந்தகணக்காய்ப்போயிற்று. His wealth, influence, &c. are all reduced. கையோயாமல்வேலைசெய்கிறான். He labors incessantly. எழுதியெழுதிக்கையோய்ந்துபோயிற்று. My arm is weary with continual writing. ஆடியோய்ந்தபம்பரம். A top that has ceased to spin; i. e. an ascetic, so called because he has renounced worldly cares, and is henceforth exempt from transmigrations. 2. An old man whose active days are past. 3. A person dismissed from office. காலோய்ந்துகையோய்ந்துபோகுதல். Feeling weak in the legs and arms--as after fever, &c. ஓயாக்கவலை, s. Incessant troubles, anxiety. ஓயாமாரி, s. Incessant rain, ஓயா மழை. 2. Unceasing liberality, பெருங் கொடை. ஓய்ந்தமனம், s. A mind that has ceased to be affected by secular objects. ஓய்ந்துபோக, inf. To become weary. அடித்தோய, inf. To desist from beating. ஓயல்--ஓய்வு, v. noun. Cessation, ceasing, relinquishment, rest, ஒழிவு. 2. Slackness, தளர்வு. 3. End, termination, முடிவு. ஓய்வுகரையில்லாமற்கொடுக்கிறான். He bestows without limit or cessation. ஓய்வுநாள், s. A day of rest; [in Christ. usage.] the sabbath. 107)

ōrai (p. 84) s. A sign of the zodiac equal to thirty degrees, இராசி. 2. A period of five நாழிகை, or two hours commencing with the rising of a zodiacal sign. 3. The rising of a sign, இலக்கினம். Wils. p. 98. HORA. 4. Opportunity, சமயம். 5. A lady's female attendant, தோழி. 6. Female toys, playthings, &c., மாதர்விளையாடுங்கருவிகள். 7. A play ground for females, மாதர்விளையாடுங்களம். 8.
