āṟu (p. 43) s. A river, natural current, brook, channel or passage through shallows, a canal, நதி. (c.) 2. (p.) Way, road, path, mode, manner, rule, method, order, custom, circumstance, வழி. In this sense, in verse, the று, is sometimes omitted. 3. Morality, virtue, good conduct, way in a moral sense, the good or right way, ஒழுக்கம. சுரருலகெய்துமாறளித்தான. He endowed him with the bliss of the gods, or literally, granted that he should attain to the world of the gods. யான்வந்தவாசென்றியம்புதி Go and tell that I am come--ஆ for ஆறு. என்றவாறு. A form added to explanations of grammatical rules, &c., implying such is the meaning. ஆறலைக்க, inf. To rob in the highway, infest the road, வழிப்பறிக்க. (p.) ஆறலை--ஆறலைப்பு, v. noun. Highway-robbery, street-robbery, வழிப்பறி க்கை. ஆறலைக்கள்வருமளியராயினார். Even the highway-robbers have proved friends. (நடை.) ஆறாடி, s. A lascivious, idle fellow, a vagabond, a pest. 2. A swelling of a river. ஆற்றுமடை, s. The channel or bed of a river, ஆற்றுக்காலின்மடை. ஆற்றுமரி, s. A shrub, நீருமரி. ஆற்றுமல்லிகை, s. A species of the Arabian Jasmin, ஓர்மல்லிகை, Jasminum sambac. ஆற்றுமுகத்துவாரம், s. The mouth of a river. ஆற்றுமுள்ளி, s. A thorny plant growing by the river, ஓர்பூடு, Dilivaria ilicifolia. ஆற்றுமேலழகி, s. A plant, ஓர்பூடு, Celsia coromandeliana, L. ஆற்றுவாளை, s. A river-fish. See வாளை. ஆற்றெதிர்ப்பட, inf. The root of one of the negative symbolic verbs, (see அல்) expressive of total or exclusive negation of the thing or quality--the opposite of உள். Sometimes in poetry it stands as a contraction of இல்லை. இற்றிறம்பிலர். They fail not in the performance of domestic duties; [ex இல், house; திறம்பு, failure; இலர், who are not.] இணையில்நெஞ்சமே. O! incomparable mind; O! mind debased beyond comparison. இலி, s. A person, or thing possessed of nothing. பிறப்பிலி, s. He who is without birth--the Supreme Being, கடவுள். 2. Siva, சிவன். Without. இல்லாமற்போனால், If not, otherwise. இல்லாமலிருக்க, inf. To be without, be wanting, be absent. இல்லாமை, neg. v. noun. Absence, destitution, privation, இன்மை. 2. Beyond measure, immeasurable. இன்னதென்றில்லை. It is not described what it is, no matter what. இவ்வளவென்றில்லை. It is unascertained, not estimated, not measured. இல்வழக்கு, s. A slanderous tongue. ஈரநாவுக்கெலும்பில்லை. There is no bone in the tongue of a slanderer. ஈரந்துவட்டல், v. noun. Rubbing off moisture from the head and body after bathing. ஈரப்பசுமை--ஈரப்பசை, s. Calmness, tranquillity, alleviation, mitigation, அமைவு. Wils. p. 158. UPASHANTA and UPASHANTI. 2. Kindness, mildness, gentleness, தயை. 3. Freedom from the power and agitation of the passions, the calmness of the mind of the ascetic, விருப்புவெறுப்பின்மை. வியாதியுபசாந்தமாயிற்று. The disease is become milder. வியாதிக்குபசாந்திசெய்யவேண்டும். A remedy must be applied to mitigate the disease. உபசாந்தமானமருந்து, s. A mild medicine. 2. Reverence, homage, acts of worship, duty, வழிபாடு. 4. A present, உபகாரம். 5. External honors done to a deity or holy person, including sixteen kinds, சோடசோ பசாரம், viz.: 1. தூபம், burning incense. 2. தீபம், placing lamps (before an idol). 3. நைவேத்தியம், eatables. 4. தாம்பூலம், betel and nut. 5. சந்தனம், sandal wood, &c. for anointing. 6. புட்பம், strewing flowers. 7. கர்ப்பூரம், camphor. 8. சலம், water for the feet, &c. 9. எண்ணெய், oil. 1. கண்ணாடி, mirrors. 11. சாமரை, hair fans. 12. குடை, umbrella. 13. கொடி, flags. 14. விசிறி, fans. 15. ஆல வட்டம், large circular fans. 16. வத்திரம், cloths. To reverence a deity, perform service--as strewing flowers before idols or holy persons, வழிபட. உபசாரஞ்செய்ய--உபசாரம்பண் ண, inf. To treat with civility. உபசாரஞ்சொல்ல, inf. uṟuppu (p. 68) s. A limb, or member of the body, parts, features, அவயவம். 2. Body, உடல். 3. Part (of a whole) component part, member, subdivision, department, section, பங்கு. 4. Just proportion, symmetry, அங்கலட்சணம். 5. Abundance, மிகுதி. 6. Bough, மரக்கொம்பு. 7. Closeness, narrowness, நெருக்கம். 8. A copy of single letters set for a child to imitate, மேல்வரிச்ச ட்டம். 9. Title deed, registry, &c. of land, காணியாட்சிப்பத்திரம். அந்தக்காணிக்கோருறுப்புமில்லை. There is no security, title, &c. for that land. உறுப்படக்கி, s. A tortoise, a turtle --from the contraction of its limbs, ஆமை; [ex உறுப்பு, et அடக்கி, from அடங்கு contraction.] உறுப்பணங்கெட்டவன். [prop. உ றுப்பினங்கெட்டவன்.] An ill-shaped, maimed, ugly person. 2. (Rott.) உறுப்பினங் கெட்டவன், A foolish, a witless fellow. உறுப்பற்றவன்--உறுப்புக்குறைந்த வன். An ill-formed, or deformed person, அவயவவீனன். 2. An ill-bred person. ஒழுக்கமில்லான். உறுப்பில்பிண்டம், s. The embryo. See எச்சம. உறுப்புக்குறைவிசேடம், s. [in rhetoric.] A species of the figure called விசேடம். உறுப்புத்தோல், s. A species of deer-skin which, according to the shasters, the Brahman should fasten to his sacred cord, நூலிற்கட்டியமான்றோல். உறுப்புநலனழிதல், v. noun. Decaying or withering--as the beauty of a female, on account of the absence of her lover, அங்கத்தழகுகெடுதல். உறுப்புமயக்கம், s. A prodigy, a monster, one whose limbs are redundant, defective, &c. See எச்சம். உறுப்புள்ளவன், s. A vigorous, well-formed man, அங்கலட்சணமுடையவன். 2. A man of enterprising character, qualified for business, திறமையுடையான். 3. A man of good conduct, அறத்துறுப்புடை யான். 4. A man of good manners, ஒழுக்கமுள்ளவன். காணிக்குறுப்புப்பண்ண, inf. To get a title deed passed for land. அகத்துறுப்பு, s. The constituent parts of virtue; they are eight in number. 1. ஐயப்படாமை, Freedom from doubt and uncertainty. 2. விருப்பின்மை, Liberation from the desires of the senses. 3. வெ றுப்பின்மை, Freedom from antipathy, prejudice, &c. 4. Exemption from illusion, confusion of mind, error, ignorance, &c. 5. பழியைநீக்கல், Freedom from evils. 6. அழி ந்தோரைநிறுத்தல், Restoring the ruined or apostate. 7. அறம்விளக்கல், Expounding or elucidating the nature of virtue. 8. பேரன்புடைமை, Great kindness, or benevolence to all sentient creatures. நூலுறுப்பு, s. One of the members or component parts of a treatise. மதிலுறுப்பு, s. The component parts of a fortification. திருவுறுப்பு, s. A jewel worn by bridegrooms upon their foreheads--a sign of the goddess இலக்குமி. செய்யுளுறுப்பு, s. The constituent parts or elements of poetry, as given in காரிகை, they are six, viz.: 1. எழுத்து, Letters forming thirteen classes. 2. அசை, Metrical syllables of two kinds. 3. சீர், Metrical feet of thirty kinds.
