akil (p. 3) s. A fragrant wood the smoke of which is used for perfuming the hair. Aquila, or eaglewood-Xylaloo, ஓர் மரம். (c.) அகிற்கட்டை-அகிற்குறடு, s. A block of Aquila, sandal. அகிற்கூட்டு, s. A compound of five ingredients, viz., ஏலம், an unguent, கருப் பூரம், pure camphor, எரிகாசு, spices, சந்தனம், sandal wood, and தேன், honey--used for perfuming the hair. (p.) அகிற்புகையூட்ட, inf. akkiṉipū (p. 4) s. [ex அக்கினி et பூ blossom.] Skanda, who led the celestial armies against the Asuras. Siva having cast his seed into the flame for the purpose of generating a warrior able to subdue Daruka one of the chief Asuras, Skanda was produced. In the Skanda Purana, where his wars are described at large, his birth is given differently, அக்கினிசன்மன். 20)

aṭi (p. 8) s. A blow, stroke, lash, stripe, a puff or blast or wind, அடிக்கும் அடி. (c.) அடிபட--அடியுண்ண, inf., To be beaten, அறையுண்ண. 2. To be proclaimed, published, made common, பகி ரங்கப்பட. 3. To be consumed, expended, செலவாக. நாலாகாரியங்களிலுமடிப்பட்டவன். One versed in, or acquainted with many things. அடிபிடி, s. [vul.] A scuffle, fight, சண்டை. 2)

aṭi (p. 8) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To beat, lash, smite, scourge, stamp, blow or beat as wind, வீச. 2. To defeat, overcome, wash away, carry away as waves, flowing water, &c., to flap, (as with wings) மோத. 3. [vul.] To kill, slay, slaughter, கொல்ல. 4. To fasten, make firm, drive in, அறைய. 5. To act with force and energy, make thorough work of, முயற் சியுடன்செய்ய. 6. v. n. To emit as a scent, வாசனையடிக்க--Note. This word joined to other verbs increases their intensity, as, மழையடித்துப்பெய்கிறது, It rains very hard. பேச்சிலேயடித்துவிட்டான், He confuted by argument,--spoke with fluency and overwhelming eloquence. அடித்துச்சொல்லிக்கொண் டுபோ, Speak fast, forcibly, fluently, &c. Added to neuter infinitives, it makes them active, as, சிதறடிக்க, to disperse. அடிகாற்று, s. [prov.] A very powerful wind, a strong gale, a tempest. அடித்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To beat one's self. அவனுக்கு அதிஷ்டம் அடிக்கிறது. Good fortune abounds to him. 4)

To apply for refuge or protection, take shelter with one, சரண்புக. 5. To subside, sink to the bottom, be deposited as a sediment, வண்டல் படிய. 6. To collect, adhere as dust, தூசி யடைய. 7. To be choked, filled up, inclosed, stopped up, தூர. 8. To be contiguous, adjacent, border upon, கிட்ட. 9. [prov.] To settle, become close, compact, hard--as bread not well leavened, sand by rain, &c., உரக்க. 1. To be preserved as pickles, &c., அடைகாயடைய. 11. To incline towards a color, நிறம்பற்ற. 12. To die, as a great or holy person, obtain bliss, absorption, &c., முத்தி, being understood. அடைகல், s. The anvil. அடைகாய், s. Pickled fruits, ஊறு காய். அடைகுறடு, s. An anvil. 2. Cloth steeped in a medical preparation and put in the mouth for a sore throat, &c., அடைசுபொட்டணம். அடைத்தகுரல், s. A hoarse, husky voice. அடைபட, inf. To be closed, shut up, அடைக்கப்பட. 2. To be obstructed, as a passage, &c., தடைபட. அடைப்பன், s. Obstruction of the throat, quinsy in cattle, ஓர்வியாதி. அடைப்பு, v. noun. Shutting, closing, stopping. 2. s. Obstruction. 3. Enclosure. 4.
