aṭi (p. 8) s. A blow, stroke, lash, stripe, a puff or blast or wind, அடிக்கும் அடி. (c.) அடிபட--அடியுண்ண, inf., To be beaten, அறையுண்ண. 2. To be proclaimed, published, made common, பகி ரங்கப்பட. 3. To be consumed, expended, செலவாக. நாலாகாரியங்களிலுமடிப்பட்டவன். One versed in, or acquainted with many things. அடிபிடி, s. [vul.] A scuffle, fight, சண்டை. 2)

aṭi (p. 8) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To beat, lash, smite, scourge, stamp, blow or beat as wind, வீச. 2. To act with force and energy, make thorough work of, முயற் சியுடன்செய்ய. 6. v. n. To emit as a scent, வாசனையடிக்க--Note. This word joined to other verbs increases their intensity, as, மழையடித்துப்பெய்கிறது, It rains very hard. பேச்சிலேயடித்துவிட்டான், He confuted by argument,--spoke with fluency and overwhelming eloquence. அடித்துச்சொல்லிக்கொண் டுபோ, Speak fast, forcibly, fluently, &c. Added to neuter infinitives, it makes them active, as, சிதறடிக்க, to disperse. அடிகாற்று, s. [prov.] A very powerful wind, a strong gale, a tempest. அடித்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To beat one's self. அவனுக்கு அதிஷ்டம் அடிக்கிறது. Good fortune abounds to him. 4)

They who are too idle to engage in any enterprize, will hear the words of rebuke which are applied to them. இடியுந்துய்த்து. Eating also millet-meal. (கல்லா.) இடிகொம்பு--இடியம்பு, s. Small mortars fastened upon a pole, which are loaded with powder and discharged at festivals, funerals, &c. இடிக்கொடி, s. The flag of Indra, இந்திரன்கொடி. இடிக்கொடியோன், s. Indra, இந் திரன். இடிபட--இடியுண்ண, inf. To be pushed about, elbowed, shouldered, battered, demolished, &c.--as a wall, bank, &c. 2. To be pounded--as rice, &c. இடிமுழக்கம், s. Thunder. இடியப்பம், s. The mould or cullender through which the paste is pressed to form the cake. இடியப்பவுரற்கண், s. The holes of the இடியப்பம் mould. இடிவிழ, inf. To strike as lightning, to fall as a thunder-bolt. 2. iṭi (p. 45) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To pound, beat in a mortar, comminute, pulverize, reduce to flour, தூளாக்க. 2. To strike with the fist, a club or any thing blunt, slantingly, not with a direct blow, தாக்க. 3. To push, gore as a beast, to thrust, to butt--as an old calf in sucking, முட்ட. 4. To thunder, eject thunder-bolts, இடியிடிக்க. 5. To beat so as to break, bruise or batter to pieces, demolish, shatter, தகர்க்க. 6. To speak forcibly and emphatically, to use strong language in order to make an impression, to urge, insist upon with earnestness, உறுதிசொல்ல. 7. v. n. To throb, beat-as the head when aching: to beat, pant, palpitate, துடிக்க. 8. To strike--as a vessel against the shore--as a gun fired, &c., உதைக்க. 9. To sound, make a noise, ஒலிக்க. இடிக்குந் துணையாரை யாள்வாரையாரே கெடுக்குந் தகைமையவர்? Who can destroy those with whom are counsellors, that caution them faithfully? நீலனைமுழங்காலினாலிடித்துருட்டினான். He pushed Neelan with his knee, and rolled him over. (இராமா.) இடித்துரை, s. iṉṉātu (p. 57) s. Evil, unpleasantness, தீது; [ex இன்.] (p.) ஈ. The fourth vowel of the Tamil alphabet, நான்காமுயிர். 2. A fly in general, ஈயென்னம்பறவை. 3. A bee, தேனீ. 4. A beetle, வண்டு. 5. A poetic expletive, முன் னிலையசைச்சொல்--as சென்றீபெரும, Proceed great man. This example given in the native grammars appears to be the only one found. ஈச்சோப்பி--ஈயோட்டி, s. A whisk for flies, a fly-flapper. ஈப்பி, s. Nits, eggs or scurf in the hair, ஈர். ஈப்பிவைக்க, inf. To be formed as nits or scurf in the hair. ஈப்புலி, s. An insect, a species of spider, ஈயைக்கொல்லும்பூச்சி. ஈயெச்சத்தோல், s. [prov.] The skin of an animal, or of the palmyra fruit when worm-eaten, or fly-blown; [vul. ஈச்சத்தோல்.] 66)

iḷai (p. 56) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To tire, grow weary, be fatigued, exhausted, to languish, தொய்ய. 2. To grow emaciated, be lean, meagre, &c., மெலிய. 3. To be worn out with age, sickness, &c., to become decrepit, தளர. 4. To become poor, be worn out--as land by continued cultivation, want of manure, &c., சக்திகுறைய. 5. To grow weak and wanting in luxuriance or fruitfulness--as trees, rice, &c., to fade--as a color, வளங்குறைய. 6. To fail before a foe or rival, to yield to superior force, தோற்க. ஒருத்தனுக்கொருத்தனிளையான். One is not inferior to the other, one will not yield to the other (they will fight till they die, except they to parted). இளைத்தோய, inf. To be exhausted from over-exertion. இளைப்பு, v. noun. Weariness, fatigue, exhaustion, faintness, மெலிவு. இளைப்பறுதி, s. Recruiting, recovery from fatigue. இளைப்பாயிருக்க, inf. To be wearied. இளைப்பாற, inf. To rest, take rest, repose, இளைப்புத்தணிய. இளைப்பாறுமண்டபம், s. A room for rest or repose--1. For idols after a procession, before they are set in the usual place. 2. For kings, or other distinguished personages after journey. to wash their feet, &c. before entering their house, வசந்தமண்டபம். இளைப்பாற்ற, inf. To refresh, cause to rest, show civilities, &c. to travellers or weary persons, இளைப்பொழிக்க. வழியிளைப்பாற்ற, inf. To entertain and refresh travellers, offering them a seat, water to wash their feet, fanning them, &c. மன்றலந்தென்றல்வீசி வழியிளைப்பாற்றினாளே. She (the Ganges) refreshed them by causing the fragrant south wind to blow. (பாரதம்.) இளைப்பாற்றி, s. Rest, resting, repose, cessation, இளைப்புத்தணிகை. இளைப்புற, inf.
