āṇvm (p. 38) s. Pride, arrogance, manliness, கருவம். 2. Self-importance, self-will, conceit of doing some thing one's self, instead of ascribing all transactions, to the deity; in which sense, it is one of the three evil principles or மலம், in which the soul is involved from eternity, and by which it is excited to the performance of moral actions and kept from union with the deity. These must be subjected and annihilated, for the soul's liberation, by the அருள் of the deity. It is used as a means of benefit to the soul, as the acid in fruit becomes a luscious juice, மும்மலத்தொன்று; [ex ஆள்.] 2. One of the thirty-two kinds of arsenic in its natural state, கோளகபாஷாணம். ஆணவப்பிணிப்பு, v. noun. The bondage of moral evil, original sin, ஆண வமலபந்தம். (p.) ஆணவமலம், s. One of the three kinds of மலம். ஆணவமறைப்பு, v. noun. The illusion or blindness in which the soul is held through the power of ஆணவம், மூல மலத்தடை. 20) *

Fence, hedge, a surrounding wall, &c., மதில். 9. Wing, feather, plumage, இறகு. 1. Side, பக்கம். 11. A dam, a bank, நீர்க்கரை. அவளொருநல்லசிறை. She has meretricious beauty. ஒருசிறைசார்ந்தான். He inclined to one side. (p.) சிறைகொள்ளவந்தான். He came to buy slaves. சிறைக்களம்--சிறைக்கூடம்--சிறைச் சாலை, s. A place of captivity. 2. A prison. சிறைக்கோலம், s. State of captivity. சிறைசெய்ய, inf. To imprison, to confine; to limit the powers of the soul. 2. To capture men or animals. 3. To dam up water. (p.) சிறைச்சோறு, s. Food given to prisoners, or captives, in charity; one of the thirty-two அறம், acts of charity. சிறைத்தீர்வை, s. A tax on slaves. (R.) சிறைபோக, inf. To be exposed to plunder. (R.) சிறைபோனவர்கள். People led into captivity. சிறைபிடிக்க, inf. To take captive, to enslave. 2. To hold in slavery. சிறைப்பட, inf. To be enslaved, to be taken captive; to be ensnared--as animals, &c., 2. To be imprisoned or impounded as stolen, or strayed cattle, &c., 3. [prov.] To be laid up, to be mislaid, or forgotten. சிறைப்படுத்த--சிறைபடுத்த, inf. To enslave, to take captive. 2. To confine, to impound. 3. To take or encage birds, wild animals, &c. to ensnare. 4. To imprison, incarcerate. சிறைப்பாடு, v. noun. [prov.] Captivity, slavery, bondage, &c., as சிறை, 2, 4. 2. Being dropped, and lying untouched; as a thing lost. சிறைப்புறம், s. The outside of a fence, or wall, for secret prying, spying, &c. (p.) சிறைமீட்க, inf. Beauty, அழகு.--There are different kinds of torches, as இரும்புப்பந் தம், எரிபந்தம், ஏணிப்பந்தம், காடபந்தம், which See in their places; also துணிப்பந்தம், or வண் ணார்பந்தம், a torch made of rags obtained from washermen. பந்தக்காட்சி--பந்தம்பறி, s. A ceremony observed at the close of some Saiva festivals, when the torches are snatched away by the people to represent what the wife of Siva did to him when angry. பந்தங்கட்ட, inf. To make flambeaus. முகத்திலேபந்தங்கட்டிக்கொண்டுநிற்கிறான்..... His face flames with anger. பந்தஞ்செய்ய, inf. To tie, to bind. 2. To bind the soul in bodies, to connect it with matter or births. பந்ததயிலம், s. A kind of medicinal oil, சுடர்த்தயிலம். பந்தமுட்டி, s. Torches arranged so as to represent an elephant.
