añcaṉam (p. 7) s. Blackness, darkness, black coloring, கறுப்பு. 2. A collyrium or black paint for the eyelids, கண் ணுக்கிடுமை. 3. A black coloring or magic ointment put on the hand, &c. to assist in discovering lost, stolen, or concealed property; a species of magic, சேமப்பொருள் முதலியகாட்டுமை. 4. See நிமிளை. (M. Dic.) அஞ்சனக்காரன், s. A soothsayer, conjurer, sorcerer. அஞ்சனக்கோல், s. A paint brush or pencil to blacken the eyelids. அஞ்சனத்திரயம், s. Three species of magical ointments, viz., பூதாஞ்சனம், that which assists in discovering whether a person is possessed or not; சோராஞ் சனம், that which assists in discovering stolen property; and பாதாளாஞ்சனம், that which assists in discovering treasure buried under ground. அஞ்சனபாஷாணம், s. One of the thirty-two kinds of native arsenic. அஞ்சனமெழுத, inf. To paint the eyes. அஞ்சனவண்ணன், s. Vishnu, the blue colored, திருமால். அஞ்சனாவதி, s. To be bruised, injured or hurt by pressure, or contact, அழுந்த. ஆசையண்டாதாகிலழுகையுமண்டாது. If free from desire (if it approach thee not) thou wilt be free from sorrow. ஒருவனையண்டிப்பிழைக்க, To live by one's favor. அண்டலர், s. Foes, enemies, பகை வர். அண்டல்--அண்டுகை--அண்டு தல், v. noun. amplm (p. 20) s. An open building in a village for public concourse or for transacting affairs of justice, சபை. 2. Open space, public, வெளி. 3. All ornamented or painted room, a room containing pictures and statues, சித்திரகூடம். (p.) அம்பலம்பண்ணுகிறாயோ. Do you transact public affairs? ஏழைபேச்சுஅம்பலமேறுமோ. Will the poor be heard in the court? 2. Justice is overruled by power. அரைச்சொற்கொண்டம்பலமேறலாமோ. Can one partially informed come before an assembly; i. e. for discussion. அம்பலக்காரன், s. aḷṟu (p. 33) கிறேன், அளறினேன், வேன், அளற, v. n. To split or become mauled or shattered--as a tree in lopping off the branches with a blunt instrument, சிதறிவெ டிக்க. 2. To split--as a palmyra tree in falling, பிளக்க. 3. To be fractured--as the skull by a fall or blow, to be broken or bruised as any part of the body, also as palmyra fruits, நெரிய. 27)

aẕi (p. 32) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், அழிய, v. n. To decay, degenerate, perish, be corrupted, ruined, wasted, blighted, effaced, obliterated, abolished, demolished, annihilated, கெட. 2. To fail (as a promise), be frustrated as a hope, &c., be refuted, தவற. அழிகரு, s. Abortion, கருவழிவு. அழிகுட்டி, s. A miscarriage, an abortion applied chiefly to brutes--the casting of the young, வயிற்றில்மரித்தது. அழிந்தோரைநிறுத்தல், v. noun. One of the eight constituent parts of virtue, அறத்துறுப்பு. அழிபுண், s. A foul ulcer, ஆறாப் புண். (M. Dic.) அழிமதி, s. Waste, extravagance, malicious intention, கெடுபுத்தி. அழிமுதல், s. Waste of property, as of capital, principal, &c. முதலழிவு. அழிம்பு, s. [vul.] The nin-payment of a debt or the non-restoration of another's property from dishonest motives, புரட்டு. 2. Ruin, devastation, injury, damage, கேடு. என்னுடையமைக்கழிம்புபேசுகிறான். He talks of destroying my property. அழிம்புசெய்ய, inf. To damage a thing. 2. To debauch a woman. அழிம்பன், s. [vul.] A spendthrift, a profligate, ஊதாரி. 2. One who makes excuses for not paying debts, restoring property, &c., புரட்டன். அழியாதபத்தினி, s. A name of D'hurupary, the wife of the Pandu princes. அழியாமுதல், s. Property devoted or entailed in perpetuity to a temple or other charity, நிலையான ஆஸ்தி. 2. God, கடவுள். அழியாமை, neg. v. noun. Incorruption, immortality, imperishableness, கெடாமை. அழிவழக்கு, s. An unjust lawsuit, a groundless prosecution, a frivolous or groundless defence, a lost lawsuit, அநி யாயவழக்கு. கற்பழியாதபெண், s. A pure virgin. அழிகை, v. noun. Destruction, decay, ruin, சிதைவு. அழிவு, v. noun. Decay, injury, ruin, loss, desolation, the act of perishing. கேடு. 2. That which has perished of itself, கெட்டது. 3. Fault, immorality, (in a restricted sense,) deviation from rule, குற்றம். அன்றுகண்டமேனிக்கழிவில்லை. Just the same appearance as before. அழிவின்மை, neg. v. noun. Freedom from decay. அழிவுகாலம், s. The time of a universal deluge and destruction at the end of an age, யுகமுடிவு. கடையழிதல், v. noun. Suffering extremely. நிறையழிதல், v. noun. Being disheartened, dispirited, without hope. 7)

The branched spadix of the flowers of a palm tree, ஆண் பனையின்காய். (c.) ஆணரி, s. Male jackall, ஓரி. ஆணாப்பிறந்தவன், s. A male, one born a male. ஆணாள், s. [in astrology.] The male division of the lunar asterisms, observed in horoscopes, ஆண் நட்சத்திரம். ஆணெழுத்து, s. A short vowel, or a short animated consonant, குற்றெழுத்து. ஆண்கிரகம், s. In the Hindu system of astrology, any one of the three planets, Mars, Jupiter, or the Sun, ஆண் கோள். ஆண்குறி, s. Membrum virile. ஆண்கூத்து, s. A male character in the drama. ஆண்டகை, s. A king, அரசன். 2. A manly person, சிறந்தோன்; [ex தகை, befitting.] (p.) ஆண்டகைமை, s. Manliness, fortitude, inherent bravery, வீரம். (p.) ஆண்டொழில், s. Exploits, mighty deeds, heroism. (p.) ஆண்டொழின்மைந்தன், s. Arjuna, அருச்சுனன். (p.) ஆண்பறவை, s. The cock, the male of any bird, சேவல். ஆண்பனை, s. The male of the palmyra tree. ஆண்பன்றி, s. A hog, boar, ஒருத் தல். ஆண்பாடு, s. The male energy, ஆண்குணம். 2. Man's affair or work. ஆண்பாடுபெண்பாடுபட்டது. The man and woman labored. ஆண்பால், [in grammar.] The masculine gender, male sex, புல்லிங்கம். 2. Masculine qualities, ஆண்டன்மை; [ex பால், class, nature.] (p.) ஆண்பிள்ளை, s. A male child, a boy, a person of the male sex in general. 2. A man of priority, a head-man. 3. A clever man, or a man of capacity. ஆண்பிள்ளைசிங்கம், s. A bold, heroic, intrepid man, one who does bravely, signalizes himself--a term of applause, வீரன். ஆண்மகன், s. An eminent man. 2. A man. 3. A husband. 4. A son. (p.) ஆண்மரம், s. The class of trees whose interior is hard, solid and suitable for timber, உள்வயிரமுள்ளமரம். 2. The செம்மரம். ஆண்மாரி, s. A masculine woman, a scold, a termagant, an amazon. ஆண்மை, s. Manliness, courage, fortitude, intrepidity, energy, manhood. 2. Strength, vigor, virility. 3. (p.) Truth, certainty. நானென்றவாண்மை. Presumption, selfconceitedness, pedantry. ஆண்வழி, s. Family descent in the male line, any peculiarity in the male line. 26)

āṉntm (p. 44) s. A medicinal root, அரத்தை, Alpinia galanga, L. 2. A supposed inauspicious form of construction in poetry, பாக்குற்றங்களினோர்வகை. It is of six kinds; viz.: 1. எழுத்தானந்தம், lengthening the final long vowel or mute of the name of the patron of a poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவன்பெயர் சார்த்தியளபெழப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். நறுமாலைதாராய்தி ரையவோஒ வென்பள் செறுமாலைசென்றடைந்தபோ ழ்து. 2. சொல்லானந்தம், using a word in a poem, so that an undesigned, inauspicious meaning may be applied to its patron, இயற்பெயர்மருங்கின் மங்கலமழிக்குந்தொழிற் சொற்பு ணர்ப்பது; உ-ம். தண்மதியமின்னிவரிந்திலங்கும்வெ ண்குடைச்செங்கோல்விசய னெரிந்திலங்கும் வேலி னெழும். 3. பொருளானந்தம், inauspicious expressions of different kinds, in poems as following. (a) Stating in a poem written in praise of a king, or a great man, that the productions of his land are injured or ruined, இறைச்சிப்பொருளையூறுபடக்கூறுதல்; உ-ம். குட்டியுந்தாயுமவ்விடரகம்புக்குவீழ்ந்தன வீழக் குரங்குகளெல்லாமவற்றுக்கிரங்கி யழுது பெரியதோரார வாரமெழுந்ததவ்வரையை யொருவிப்போமினென்றான். (b.) Stating inauspicious actions as praise, மங்கலமழியக்கூறுகை; உ-ம். பீலிவிரித்துப்பலமயிலி ருந்தென வழிவந்தசைந்தவ்வருத்தத்தாற்றத்தங்கேசங்களை யெடுத்து முடிக்கில்லாதுவிரித்திருப்பரவன் வரைமேல். (c.) Stating an inapplicable comparison, உவமைக்காட்சியிலூனந்தோன்றக்கூறுவது; உ-ம். பெ யலொடு வைகிய வியன்கணிரும்பனத் தகலிருவிசும்பி னாஅரல்போலவாலிதின்மலர்ந்தபுன்கொடிமுசுண்டை. (d) Stating that a calamity or injury happened to that which is compared to the patron of the poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவனோ டுவமிக்கப்பட்டதற் கிடையூறுபடச் சொல்லுவது; உ-ம். வெற்பினிற்பொருத விறலோனன்ன பொற்புறு பரூஉத்தாட்போதகந்துரந்த. (e.) Comparing the patron of a poem to the meanest thing, இறப்பவிழிந்தவானந்த உவமை; உ-ம் வள்ளெயிற்றுப் பேழ்வாய் ஞமலிக்கு மான்குழா மெள்ளியிரிந்தாற்போ லெவ்வழியும் வள்ளற்கு மாலார்கடலன்ன மண்பரந்த வாட்டானை மேலாருமேலார் விரைந்து. (f) Comparing the meanest person or thing to the highest, இறப்ப வுயர்ந்த வானந்தவுவமை; உ-ம். இந்திரனேபோலுமிளஞ்சாத்தன் சாத்தற்கு மந்தரமேபோ ன்றுளது மல்லாகம் மந்தரத்துத் தாழருவிபோன்றுளதுதார் மாலையம்மாலை யேழுலகுநாறுமிணர், (g.) Comparing the patron of a poem to a thing that loses its power or eminence, இறந்துபாட்டு வமையானந்தம்; உ-ம். சென்றுபடுபரிதியிற்சிறந்ததோ ற்றத்தை. 4. யாப்பானந்தம், constructing a poem so that the name of its patron may follow a noun which is preceded by a word placed after the rhyming word of the stanza, முதற் றொடைமருங்கின் மொழிநிறுத்தொருபெயரிடைப்படுத் தவ்வழியிருசீர்ப்படப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். ஊகத்தினான்ம ல்குசோலையுழியனுயர்வரைவாய் மேகத்தினாலுமின்னாலு மெலிந்துநைந்த வாகத்தினானேற்கருளாயென்பணியு மைவாய் நாகத்தினான்மால் கடைந்திடப்பட்ட நளிகட லே. 5. தூக்கானந்தம், constructing a musical poem so that the name of its patron shall be inauspiciously, indistinctly, or abruptly pronounced, யாழொடுபுணர்ந்தபாவிற்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர் அமங்கலமாகத்தொனிக்கவும், ஒருவற் குப்புலனாகாதிருக்கவும், பிரிந்திசைக்கவும்பாடுதல். 6. தொடையானந்தம், placing the name of the patron of a poem at the beginning of the stanza, so that it may rhyme with அளபெ டை; அளபெடைத்தொடைப்பாட்டினுட்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர்சார்த்தியளபெடுப்பத்தொடுப்பது; உ-ம். வாஅ வழுதிமதுரைமறுகினிற்பொலிபகைமுனைப்போர். 7)

āṉi (p. 44) s. June--the month, ஓர்மாதம். 2. (p.) The eighteenth Nakshattra, கேட்டை. 3. The nineteenth lunar mansion, மூலம். 4. The twenty-first lunar mansion, உத்திராடம். 5. The name of a river in the Madura district, which overflows in the month of June, பொருந்தநதி. 6. (திவா.) A tender leaf of the palm, cut off, வெட்டுக்குருத்து. ஆனித்திருமஞ்சனம், s. A sacred bathing or anointing of the idol at Chillumbrum. celebrated in the eighth lunar mansion in the month of June. ஆனித்தூக்கம், s. [prov.] Calms in the month of June. 15) *

āli (p. 42) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To be joyous, cheerful, களிக்க. (p.) ஆலிக்குமந்தணர் வாழ்கின்றதில்லை. Chillumbrum where brahmans rejoice. (திருப்பல்லா ண்டு.) 23) *

iṭi (p. 45) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், ய, v. n. To be broken, battered, demolished--as a wall, &c., to fall to pieces, crumble in ruins, உ டைய. 2. To be washed or broken down-as the bank of a river, கரையிடிய. 3. To become partly bruised--as rice in a mortar, நொறுங்க. இடிகரை, s. A broken bank, margin, &c. of a river, tank or well. இடிசாமம், s. [vul.] A time of ruin, கெடுகாலம். 2. Defamation, reproach, நிந்தை. இடிசுவர், s. A dead wall, a broken wall. இடிவு, v. noun. Demolition, ruin, dilapidation, the washing or crumbling away of a bank. 87)

iṭi (p. 45) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To pound, beat in a mortar, comminute, pulverize, reduce to flour, தூளாக்க. 2. To strike with the fist, a club or any thing blunt, slantingly, not with a direct blow, தாக்க. 3. To push, gore as a beast, to thrust, to butt--as an old calf in sucking, முட்ட. 4. To thunder, eject thunder-bolts, இடியிடிக்க. 5. To beat so as to break, bruise or batter to pieces, demolish, shatter, தகர்க்க. 6. To speak forcibly and emphatically, to use strong language in order to make an impression, to urge, insist upon with earnestness, உறுதிசொல்ல. 7. v. n. To throb, beat-as the head when aching: to beat, pant, palpitate, துடிக்க. 8. To strike--as a vessel against the shore--as a gun fired, &c., உதைக்க. 9. To sound, make a noise, ஒலிக்க. இடிக்குந் துணையாரை யாள்வாரையாரே கெடுக்குந் தகைமையவர்? Who can destroy those with whom are counsellors, that caution them faithfully? நீலனைமுழங்காலினாலிடித்துருட்டினான். He pushed Neelan with his knee, and rolled him over. (இராமா.) இடித்துரை, s. Affirmation, assurance, உறுதிச்சொல். இடிமரம், s. A pestle, உலக்கை. இடிமருந்து, s. Pulverized or comminuted medicine. 88)

iylpu (p. 48) s. Nature, property, quality, natural or essential quality, instinct, genius, குணம். 2. Conduct, a proper course of conduct, good character, ஒழுக்கம். 3. A prescribed rule, order, method, custom, habit, முறை. 4. State, condition, circumstances, situation, rank, class, &c.--as applicable to man, brute, vegetable, &c., தன்மை. 5. Propriety, regularity, legitimacy, genuineness, நேர்மை. 6. Simplicity, plainness, honesty, frankness, இயற்கை. இயல்பினானில்வாழ்க்கைவாழ்பவன். The householder who discharges his domestic duties with propriety. (குறள்.) இயல்பானபகை, s. What is naturally uncongenial or counteracting-as medicine to the disease. இயல்பானபகையாளி, s. A foe by nature--as the cat to birds. இயல்புதப்பிப்போக, inf. To be dishonest, to act dishonestly, live disorderly, go beyond the proper bounds. இயல்புப்புணர்ச்சி, s.
