ūr (p. 70) s. A country, a village, town, or city, புரம். ஊரறிந்தபார்ப்பான். A brahman who knows the whole country or town; i. e. a person competent for business. ஊருடன்கூடிவாழ். Prosper in the society of your fellow citizens. ஊரோடேபோய்ச்சேர்ந்தான். He arrived at home. ஊரன், s. The chief of an agricultural district, மருதத்தலைவன். (p.) ஊரவர்கள்--ஊரார், s. Inhabitants of a village, town, country, &c. 2. Others, strangers, not one's own people, அன்னியர்.--Used adjectively, the ர் is often dropped--as ஊராகாரியம், others' affairs; ஊராசொத்து, others' property; ஊ ராகாணி, others' land. ஊராருடைமைக்குப்பேராசைகொள்ளுதல்..... Coveting other men's property-துஷ்டப்பிள்ளைக்குஊரார்புத்திசொல்லுவார்கள்... An unruly child will be chastized by the magistrates. ஊரார்கையிற்கொடுக்க, inf. To deliver into another man's hand. ஊராளி, s. The ruler, magistrate, or headman of a district, ஊரதிகாரி. ஊரிலிகம்பலை, s. [prop. ஊர்கலி கம்பலை.] A village quarrel, tumult, &c. ஊரின்னிசை, s. A poem concerning the heroes of a town, or country, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். See பிரபந்தம். ஊருக்குப்போக, inf. To go to a town, to go on a journey. ஊருணி, s. A public tank accessible to all in the town, ஊரடுத்தகுளம். ஊருணிநீர்நிறைந்தற்றேயுலகவாம்பேரறிவாளன் றிரு. The wealth of one possessing great wisdom, and who is much liked by the public is like a tank filled with water to which all have access. ஊரெழுச்சி, s. Rising of citizens to present complaints to the authorities; also insurrection, ஊர்க்கலகம். ஊர்கூடுதல், v. noun. Assembling --as citizens. ஊர்கூடிச்செக்குத்தள்ளவேண்டுமா? Is it necessary that the whole city come together to turn the oilman's press? i. e. a trifling matter does not require a concourse of people. ஊர்கோலம்வர--ஊர்வலம்வர, inf. To pass about as a nuptial procession, first to the right as being auspicious, கிராமப்பிரதட்சணம்வர. ஊர்க்கதை, s. Rumor, countrytalk, ஊர்ப்பேச்சு. 2. Unfounded reports, slander, defamation, பொய்ச்செய்தி. 3. A wild, romantic story, வீண்செய்தி. ஊர்க்கலகம், s. A village quarrel, ஊரிலுண்டாகுங்கலகம். 2. kālam (p. 104) s. Time. duration, பொழுது-Note. In Hindu philosophy, காலம் is said by the Saivas to have proceeded from மோகினி Maya, and to be a co-efficient cause with Siva in the acts of creation, preservation and destruction. It is Time personified, and according to the Hindu metaphysicians, one of the seven வித்தியாத் துவம். (சிவ. சி.) 2. Season of the year or life; also a specific time of the day, பருவம். 3. A seasonable or proper time, opportunity, season, சமயம். Wils. p. 216. KALA. 4. Day-break, விடியல். 5. (fig.) (c.) An experienced man; an aged person. காலங்கரந்தபெயரெச்சம், s. [in gram.] A relative participle without the characteristics of the tenses--as in கொல் யானை. காலங்கழிக்க, inf. To pass time கா லம்போக்க. காலங்கழிய, inf. To pass--as time, நாட்கழிய. காலங்கூட, inf. [local.] To die. காலசக்கரம், s. The different number of years of influence ascribed to the respective planets as operative on the lives of persons, ஆயுள்நியதிச்சக்கரம். 2. The aggregate of the years of the nine planets according to their respective influence, கிரகபலச்சக்கரம். 3. Period or term of life, ஆயுட்காலம். Wils. p. 216. KALACHAKRA.. அவனுக்குக்காலச்சக்கரமுடிவுவந்துவிட்டது. The end of his term is come. காலசங்கதி, s. Intelligence, news or events of the time or the day. காலசங்கை, s. Guess of time from mere inspection, காலஉத்தேசம். 2. Reckoning of time, காலக்கணக்கு. (p.) காலசந்தி, s. The daily morning worship; also applicable to that at noon and evening. 2. The interval between any two yugas, kalpas, &c. See கற்பம் and சந்தி. திரிகாலசந்தி, s. Worship in the morning, at noon and in the evening. காலசுகம், s. Time in reference to the influences of planets upon the fortune, health, &c., of a person. காலநோக்காடு, s. [prov. in child-birth.] Natural and timely labor. காலந்தள்ள, inf. To pass one's days, to pass one's time, to maintain one's self, to live, காலம்போக்க. காலப்பரிச்சேதம், s. Discernment--as to the time of an event or the existences of a thing. It is one of the three பரிச்சேதம் modes of ascertaining facts. காலபரிபாகம், s. The maturity of the soul, or time for its attaining bliss, having eliminated its good and evil propensities. காலபேதம்--காலவித்தியாசம்--கால வேற்றுமை, s. Difference of time with respect to the changes it produces. காலபோகம், s. A crop of grain or fruits in the proper season. 2. The enjoyment or suffering resulting from previous moral actions, to which a living being at distant times is subjected, காலப் பயனுகர்வு. காலப்பெயர், s. Nouns or names of time--as year, month. 2. Nouns derived from names of time--as பங்குனன் (one born in the பங்குனி month). காலப்பெயர்ச்சி, s. Change of season or monsoon; unseasonable weather, கால விகற்பம். காலமயக்கம்--காலமயக்கு, s. [in gram.] An improper use of the tenses, காலவழு. 2. An allowed deviation in the use of tenses, காலவழுவமைதி. காலமலைவு, s. Confusion of statement in regard to time--as asserting that the lotus blooms in the evening, or the lily during the day. காலமல்லாக்காலம், s. An unfortunate, fatal time; an unseasonable time, அகாலம். காலமழை, s. Rain in the proper season, பருவத்திற்பெய்யுமழை. காலமறிய, inf. To know the times so as to adapt one's self to them, காலவகைய றிய. 2. To know things past, present or future intuitively or by apiritual sight --as yogis, காலவியற்கையறிய. காலமாறு, Morning by morning, every morning, காலைதோறும். (c.). காலமானம், s. [in arith.] Time measure. காலமிருத்து, s. Death at the destined season--as distinguished from accidental death, விதித்தகாலத்திலடையுமரணம். காலமே--காலத்தாலே. To present a manifest revolution--as in the order of things; to be irregular, deranged, &c.--as the events of a time--as toddy-drawers seen riding in palankeens, &c. காலம்போக்க, inf. To pass the times. 2. To while away time. காலவகை, s. Seasons, times, காலக் கூறுபாடு. 2. Circumstances depending on time, காலவேறுபாடு. காலவர்த்தமானம், s. Events of the times. காலவழக்கம், s. Customs of the times. காலவழு, s. [in gram.] An improper use of the tenses--as the past for the future, &c., காலக்குற்றம். காலவாகுபெயர், s. [in gram.] Nouns of time or portions of time, used by metonymy for what is intimately connected with time--as கார்த்திகை, the name of a month, for a plant which mostly blossoms during the month. காலவிடைநிலை, s. [in gram.] Characteristics of tenses, காலத்தைக்காட்டுமிடை நிலை. They are 1. த், ட், ற், and இன் for the past. 2. ஆநின்று, கின்று and கிறு for the present. 3. ப், ல், for the future. There are some other characteristics-as மன், இசின், ய், இ, ன், &c. காலவிரைவு, v. noun. Swiftness or rapid flight of time. காலாகாலம், s. Times seasonable and unseasonable, auspicious and inauspicious, நற்காலந்துர்க்காலம். 2. One time or another, not often, not frequently. (c.) காலாக்கினி, s. The fire which is to destroy the world at the end of the great yuga; a deluge-fire said to be in reserve in the nethermost part of the earth. Wils. p. 218. KALAGNI. 2. One of the two-hundred and twenty-four புவ னம் under the regency of Kálágni. காலாக்கினியுருத்திரம், s. One of the thirty-two உபநிடதம். காலாக்கினியுருத்திரர், s. Rudra or the deity in the lowest region, in charge of the deluge-fire. There are ten subordinate Rudras, who resemble their chief. காலாந்தம், s. The end of time, கால முடிவு; [ex. அந்தம்.] காலாந்தரம், s. Intermediate space of time, process of time, காலநடை. 2. Meanwhile, காலவிடை; [ex அந்தரம், interval.] காலேச்சுரவாதம், s. The metaphysical philosophy which maintains that Time is God. காலோசிதம், s. A fit, proper time, உச் சிதகாலம்; [ex உசிதம்.] அந்தியகாலம், s. The time of death. ஆங்கால மெய்வருந்த வேண்டா வதுதானே தேங்காய்க் கிளநீர்போற் சேருமே, போங்காலம் காட்டானை தின்ற கனியதுபோ லாகுமே தேட்டாளன் றேடுந் தனம். Wealth shall or itself accumulate at the appointed time of increase, as the liquor within a cocoanut, and no toll is required; but at the fixed time for ruin, the riches of a hard-working man shall pass away like the contents of a woodapple eaten by an elephant. எக்காலமும். At what time soever, always. சாங்காலம், s. The time of death or ruin. திரிகாலம்--முக்காலம், s. The three divisions of time, present, past, and future. 2.The three tenses of a verb. திரிசந்திகாலம். The three parts or divisions of the day: viz., காலை, morning. உச்சி, noon. மாலை, evening. புண்ணியகாலம், s. See under புண்ணி யம். போங்காலம், s. The time of separation or ruin. 155) *

caṉi (p. 173) s. The planet Saturn, the most, malignant, in astrological influence of all the planets, ஓர்கிரகம். 2. Saturday, சனிக்கி ழமை. W. p. 829. S'ANI. 3. (fig.) A person of ill omen whose company is dangerous, சனிபோன்றவன்.--Note. The different positions and influences of the planet are. (1.) அஷ்டமசனி. See under அஷ்டம். (2.) நாலாமிடத்துச்சனி, called also அர்த்தாஷ்டம சனி. Saturn in the fourth sign from that of one's birth, where his influence is less malignant. (3.) இரண்டாமிடத்துச்சனி, or பாதச் சனி. Saturn in the sign nest to that in the ascendant, where his influence is indicative of eloquence and oratory. (4.) ஏழ ரையாண்டுச்சனி. Saturn's 7?? years' evil influence called ஏழரை, and divided into three parts, மங்குசனி, பொங்குசனி, மரணச்சனி which see. As saturn is 2?? years in each sign of the zodiac, it occupies 7?? years for three signs, so that a man living ninety years would pass three times through all these periods. See ஏழரை. (5.) பன்னிரண்டாமிடத்துச் சனி. Saturn in the 12th sign from that in the ascendant. (6.) சன்மச்சனி. Saturn in the ascendant. (7.) மகத்துச்சனி. Saturn in the first lunar asterism of Leo called மகம், indicating great calamities. (8.) மீனச்சனி. Saturn in the Pices, considered unpropitious in its influence. இவனெனக்கு மகத்துச்சனிபோலிருக்கிறான். He is a great enemy to me. சனிகழிய--சனியன்றொலைய, inf. To expire or end as any period of saturn's malign influence on a person. 2. To terminate as a cause of calamity, evil, &c. சனிக்கிழமை--சனிவாரம், s. Saturday. சனிக்கிழமைவிரதம், s. [also சனிவிர தம்.] A fast on Saturdays, to avert the evil influences of Saturn, when, before eating, crows, emblems of Saturn, are fed. 2. A fast in honor of Vishnu. சனிபகவான்--சனீச்சுரன், s. The regent of Saturn. சனிபிடித்தல், v. noun. Being seized by Saturn, brought under his malignant influence. 2. (fig.) Being assailed by adverse circumstances, துன்புறுதல். சனிமுழுக்கு, v. noun. Bathing on Saturdays. சனிமூலை, s. The north east, (lit.) Saturn's quarter, வடகிழக்கு. சனியன், s. Saturn the planet. 2. An unlucky person, associating with whom may bring evil. 3. A troublesome person, animal, thing, circumstance, &c. இவன் எனக்குச் சனியனாய் வந்தான். He is a Saturn (an inauspicious person) to me. சனிவேதை, s. The influence of Saturn; pain, சனிதோஷம். (R.) சனிக்காசு, s. A small coin paid to the master, by the scholars, on Saturdays. சனிப்பாட்டு, s. [loc.] A song or poem sung by the boys of a school, near the end of a year, to obtain presents from their parents, and others, for the master. சனியெண்ணெய், s. The oil collected by scholars, from their parents, for their teacher, on Saturdays. 66) *

Earth, பூமி--This word is commonly used நட்டு in combination--as நட்டாறு, the midst of the river, நட்டுச்சி, exactly the meridian. நடக்கடல், s. The mid-sea. நடுக்கடல்போனாலும்மறுப்படாமல்வரக்கடவீர்..... Even though you go into the midst of the sea, may you return without harm. நடுக்கட்ட, inf. [prov.] [com. பொதுக் கட்ட.] To sequester property. நடுக்கட்டு, s. A girdle. See under கட்டு. நடுக்கண்டம், s. The central portion of a continent. 2. The middle piece. நடுக்காரர், s. [prov.] Arbitrators, judges, umpires. நடுக்கிளி, s. The head player in a square. See under கிளி. நடுக்குடி, s. A house-hold in the midst of others, as being safer than if alone. 2. A family of midding circumstances, rank, &c. 3. [prov.] The head-family of a tribe or class. நடுக்கேட்க, inf. To hear a case in law. 2. To refer a case for decision. நடுக்கொண்டவீடு, s. [prov.] The middle house. (c.) நடுக்கொள்ளைக்காரன், s. One who plunders without regard to either party. நடுச்சாமம், s. Midnight, the middle watch from 12 o'clock till 3. நடுச்சுவர், s. An incantation in the Saiva worship, the letters of which are mystic symbols of the forms of deity, or of the idol worshipped. The words are ஆம், ஊம், ஓம், சிவாயநம, in which ஆம், is அடி, basis; ஊம், is நடு, middle; ஓம், is முடி, top; சி, is சிவம், formless deity; வா, is சத்தி, the female principle, obscuration. நடுநிலைமை, s. Mediocrity, middle circumstances in life. நடுநிற்றல், v. noun. Becoming bail or security for one. (not the law term.) 2. Being upright, impartial. நடுநீதி, s. Impartial justice, equity, &c., as நடுநியாயம். நடுப்பகல், inf. Mid-day, noon. (c.) நடுப்படுத்த, inf. As நடுக்கட்ட. நடுப்பார்த்தல், v. noun. Zenith, meridian. நடுராசி, s. Middling in quality, size, &c., moderate, நடுத்தரம். நடுவதுபாதி, s. That which is in the midst, intermediate. நடுவதுபாதியிலேவந்தான். He came after the beginning of an affair when half of it was over; he came last. நடுவத்தசாமம்--நடுவத்தொருசாமம், s. [prov.] Midnight. நடுவயது, s. Middle age. நடுவறுத்தல், v. noun.
