Particles employed to express the names of the letters--as அ with the consonants; கரம், காரம் and கான் with the short letters and sometimes with the consonants; காரம் with the long vowels and கான் with ஐ and ஔ. In common use, ன is used with the short, and ஆன and அன்னா with the long letters. Some other forms are also given in ancient grammars and they are also occasionally used. எழுத்துச்சுருக்கம், s. A kind of play on letters by omitting one after another in regular succession, and thus changing the sense, ஓரணி. எழுத்துச்சேலை--எழுத்துப்புடவை, s. A woman's fancy dress whether printed or embroidered, சித்திரவஸ்திரம். எழுத்துத்திரிதல், v. noun. Permutation of letters--the change of one letter for another according to grammatical rules, for the purposes of euphony, மூவிகாரத்தொன்று. எழுத்துநடை, s. Double letters, letters written together in a contracted form--as 9 for க்க; ட்ட for ட்ட; ? for த்த, &c. நீர்மேலெழுத்து, s. An inscription on the water--a simile expressive of that which is evanescent. கல்மேலேழுத்து, s. An inscription on a stone expressive of that which is stable and enduring. நல்லோரொருவர்க்குச்செய்தவுபகாரங் கன்மேலெழுத்துப்போற்காணுமே--அல்லாத ஈரமிலாநெஞ்சத்தார்க்கீந்தவுபகாரம் நீர்மேலெழுத்திற்குநேர். ōṭu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓடினேன், வேன், ஓட, v. n. To run, flee, flee away, pass quickly, விரைந்துசெல்ல. 2. [used with the impers. terminations.] To grow long, extend, be long, go far, நீள. 3. To divide, split, crack, வெடிக்க. ஓடவுமாட்டான் பிடியுங்கொடான். He will neither run, nor suffer himself to be caught. அவனுக்குஎழுத்துநடையோடாது. He cannot read freely. ஊரோடுகையிலொக்கவோடு. Run when your fellow-countrymen do; i. e. do as others do. வேரோடுகிறது. The root runs (into the ground). கப்பலோடுகிறது. The ship is sailing, is under sail. ஓடவைத்தல், v. noun. Refining metals, புடம்வைத்தல். இழிவினோடொன்றிநின்றவாடகத்தையோடவைக் குமாறுபோல். As refining gold spoiled by mixture with the same metal of inferior quality. (பார.) ஓடவைத்தபொன், s. Refined gold. ஓடாணி, s. [in jewelry.] A pin or bolt passed into an ornament as a fastening, ஆபரணக்கடைப்பூட்டு. ஓடித்திரிய, inf. To run about. 2. To assume airs. 3. To take great pains, &c., to attain an object. ஓடிப்படர, inf. To run and spread as a creeper. ஓடிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To overtake in running. ஓடிப்போக, inf. To run away. ஓடியாடிப்பார்க்க, inf. To go about, to endeavor. அவன்ஒருஉத்தியோகத்திற்கோடியாடிப்பார்க்கிறா ன். He goes about in pursuit of a situation. ஓடியுறைய, inf. To congeal gradually, இறுக--chiefly used in the past. கஷாயமெல்லாமோடியுறைந்தது. The decoction is all congealed. ஓடிவர, inf. To approach at a running pace. ஓடிவிறைக்க, inf. To extend--as stiffness over the body through cold, முழுதும்விறைக்க. ஓடிவெளிக்க, inf. [prov.] To be dispelled--as clouds; to clear--as the sky, முகில்பரந்தொழிய. 2. To be discovered--as fraud, theft, &c., களவுவெளிப்பட. அவர்வஞ்சகமெல்லாமோடிவெளித்துப்போயிற்று. He has discovered the imposition, &c. மழையோடிவெளித்துப்போயிற்று. The appearance of rain is past away, the sky is become clear. ஓடுதாவடி, s. Bustle and confusion in preparing--as for a journey, &c., going abroad--as for business, &c., in a time of bustle, &c., கலக்கம். ஓடுதாவடிப்படுதல், v. noun. Being in a bustle--as in preparing for a journey, &c. ஓடுபந்தல், s. [prov.] A moveable canopy supported on cords, &c., நடைக் காவணம். ஓடுவிப்புருதி, s. A running cancer, ஓர்புண். ஓட்டம், v. noun. Running, flight, galloping, speeding, ஓடுமோட்டம். 2. Current, flowing, course, pace, drift, நீரோட் டம். 3. Defeat, rout, retreat, flight, தோல்வி. அங்கேநானெடுத்தஓட்டமிங்கேவந்தோய்ந்தது... I ran all the way hither. அவனுக்கெழுத்தோட்டமில்லை. He does not read fluently. ஓரோட்டமாய்வா. Come at once, come without halting, do not stay on the way. ஓட்டங்காட்ட, inf. To lead the way, to precede inducing others to follow. ஓட்டமாகவோட, inf. To run with great speed. ஓட்டமெடுக்க-ஓட்டம்பிடிக்க, inf. The scale or dish of a balance, தராசுத்தட்டு. கன்னகடூரம், s. Harsh, grating, dissonant sound, uncouth to the ear. கன்னக்காரன், s. A burglar, கன் னமிடுபவன். கன்னக்கிரந்தி--கன்னப்புற்று, s. A swelling in the cheek from the venereal disease, கன்னத்தில்வருமோர்நோய். கன்னக்கோல், s. An implement for breaking through the walls of houses, கன்னகம். கன்னக்கோல்வைக்க--கன்னமிட, inf. To commit burglary by breaking through a wall. கன்னசூலை, s. A tumor in the region of the cheek, one of the arthritic class of diseases. See சூலை. கன்னத்தட்டு, s. [as கன்னம்.] The dish of a balance, சிறுதராசுத்தட்டு. கன்னத்திலேயடிக்க--கன்னத்திலே யறைய--கன்னத்திற்போட inf. To slap the face, to box the ears. கன்னபரம்பரைஞானம்--கன்னபா ரம்பரியம். s. Tradition, oral transmission of intelligence, history, news, meaning, &c., பரம்பரைக்கேள்வியால்வந்தஞானம். கன்னபாகம், s. The ear, காது. கன்னபூரம், s. A kind of ear-ornament, காதணியினொன்று. 2. The ear, காது. கன்னபூஷணம், s. Ear-ornaments, காதணி. கன்னப்பரிசை, s. The whiskers or beard on the cheek. கன்னப்பள்ளம், s. The hollow of the cheek. கன்னப்பிளவை, s. A cancer or scirrous affection in the cheek--as கபோ லப்பிளவை. கன்னப்பூ, s. A kind of female ear-ornament, காதணியிலொன்று. கன்னப்பொறி, s. The temples, the upper part of the side of the head, காதினருகானபொறி. கன்னமதம், s. Secretion from the temples of the elephant, யானைமும்மதத்தி லொன்று. கன்னமீசை, s. [prov.] The whiskers. கன்னமூலம், s. kṟkiccā (p. 102) s. Equation for the second inequality of a planet when its position is within six signs of aries. 2. Table of these equations, the annual parallax of the orbits of planets, given when their place in the heavens is from cancer to capricornus, கற்கிசீக்கரபரிதி; [ex கற்கி, cancer, சா, sign], meaning the signs of commutation from cancer to capricornus, which is equal to the annual parallax. 17)

kātu (p. 104) s. Ear, செவி. 2. The eye of a needle, ஊசியின்காது. The pan of a gun, துப்பாக்கிக்காது. 4. The bottom of a tobacco leaf near the stem, (See சோணை.) 5. The top of an ola bond, as far as the hole through which it is filed; also the stamped part of an indenture or bond, which is nipped off, when the bond becomes null and void, உடன்படிக்கையின்காது. 6. Eye of an umbrella wire, which plays round the whale bone, குடைக்கம்பியின்காது. 7. The ear of a machine or vessel--as இராட்டினக்காது. 8. A small wedge to hold a tenon, handle or peg in its place, இறுக்கலாப்பு. காதுக்கிட்டால்முகத்துக்கழகு. Rings, &c., put in the ear are ornaments to the face. காதுங்காதும்வைத்தாற்போல். With the utmost secrecy, ear to ear, &c. எனக்குக்காதுகேளாது. I am deaf. காதடி, s. [vul. காதவடி.] The back part of the cheek, செவியடி. காதடைப்பு, v. noun. Deafness occasioned by a fall, blow, disease, &c. காதணி, s. An ear-ornament; of this there are sixteen kinds: viz., கடிப் பிணை, கம்பி, கன்னப்பூ, கன்னாவதங்கம், குணுக்கு, குண்டலம், குழை, கொட்டை, செவிமலர், தாட ங்கம், தூக்கம், தொங்கல், தோடு, மஞ்சிகை, வல் லிகை, வேடம். காதற--காதறுந்துபோக, inf. To have the perforated part of the ear cut or torn off. காதறுக்க, inf. To rend the ear by tearing off the ear-rings. 2. To cancel a bond, commonly by mutilating it. காதறுத்தகூலிகைமேலே. Tearing the ear and getting booty; i. e. doing injustice and getting money. காதறுப்பான், s. A sore that appears round the ear, காதைச்சுற்றிவரும் இரணம். காதறை, s. One whose ear has been cut off, or mutilated. 2. The cavity of the ear. காதற்றமுறி, s. A cancelled ola bond. காதார, adv. With one's own ear. காதாரக்கேட்க, inf. To hear with one's own ears. காதாரக்கேட்டசாட்சி, s. An ear-witness. காதிலேசொல்ல, inf. To whisper in the ear. காதிலேயடிபட, inf. To be uttered in one's hearing. காதிலேயோத, inf. To whisper in the ear. 2. To initiate a disciple by whispering a மந்திரம் in the ear. 3. To give private advice. காதிலேவிழ, inf. To reach the ears, to be heard. காதுகடிக்க, inf. To whisper, to buzz in the ear. காதுகுத்த, inf. To bore, perforate or pierce the ear. நீயெனக்குக்காதுகுத்துகிறாயா. Do you pierce my ear? (Do you teach me?) காதுகுளிர, inf. To be gratifying to the ear--as good news, a good voice, sweet music, &c. காதுகேளாதவன், s. A deaf man. காதுகொடுக்க, inf. To give ear, to hearken, to listen, to give attention. என்சொல்லுக்குக்காதுகொடுத்தான். He has given ear to my words. காதுக்கின்பமான, Pleasing to the ear. காதுக்குடைச்சல், s. An itching, tingling sensation in the ear. காதுக்குத்து--காதுநோய், s. Ear-ache. காதுக்குறும்பி, s. Ear-wax, cerumen. காதுச்சோணை--காதுத்தண்டு, s. The lobe of the ear. காதுதூர, inf. To close the perforation of the ear. காதுத்துவாரம்--காதுத்துளை s. A perforation or hole in the ear intended for jewels. காதுப்பூ, s. A flower-shaped ear-ornament, for females. காதுப்பூச்சி, s. [prov.] A small kind of centipede, said to be very dangerous if it get into the ear, செவிப்பாம்பு. காதுமடல், s. The gristles of the ear, காதின் இதழ். காதுமந்தம், s. Dullness of hearing, காதடைப்பு. காதுமந்தன், s. A person dull of hearing. காதுமுருத்து, s. [prov.] The hard gristles of the ear. காதுவளர்க்க, inf. To promote the proper growth of the lobe of the ear for wearing jewels. காதுவிடாய், s. Weakness or lassitude in hearing, occasioned by hunger or sickness. காதுவெட்ட--காதுநறுக்க--காதுகிள்ள, inf. [prov.] To tear or nip off the stamped part of an ola bond, or otherwise to mutilate it as an indication of its being cancelled, உடன்படிக்கையின் காத றுக்க. காதெழுச்சி, s. A sore in the ear, கா தில் வரும் ஓர்நோய். காதைநெறிக்க, inf. To prick up the ears. காதைப்பொத்த, inf. To stop the ear. காதோதி, s. A malicious whisperer. காதோலை, s. An ear-ornament, often a rolled ola, colored red; used also to enlarge the perforation, whence the name, காதுக்கிடும் ஓலை.--Note. A person is considered naked with nothing in the ear. இல்லிக்காது, s. Ears with the hole very small--opposed to தொன்னைக்காது. கீழ்க்காது, s. The lower part of the ear. சோணைக்காது--சோணை பெருத்த காது, s. Large ear-laps, not perforated. தொள்ளைக்காது--வடிகாது--வார்காது, s. Ears with the hole much enlarged. மேற்காது, s. The upper part of the ear. வடுகக்காது, s. Large ear-laps artificially made. 23)

kiṟukku (p. 112) கிறேன், கிறுக்கினேன், வேன், கிறு க்க, v. a. To efface, blot out, obliterate, cancel, கிறுக்கித்தள்ள. 2. To scribble, to write with an iron pen, to grave, எழுத. இதையெழுதினதில்லை கிறுக்கினான். He has not written this well, he has scribbled. ஒருதுண்டுகிறுக்கியனுப்பிவிடும். Drop a line to him; scribble a line to him. கிறுக்கு, v. noun. Blotting, cancelling, obliteration, கிறுக்கித்தள்ளுகை. 2. A letter, character, or writing, எழுத்து. கிறுக்காயிருக்க, inf. To be scribbled over. கிறுக்கில்லாதவெழுத்து. A fair hand without any erasures. கிறுக்கெழுத்து. Letters or writing crossed out; letters or writing in which alterations are made. 29)

kiḷḷu (p. 112) கிறேன், கிள்ளினேன், வேன், கிள்ள, v. a. To pinch with the finger and thump, the nails, &c., கையாற்கிள்ள. 2. To pinch off, to pluck, to nip, to pick--as a leaf, &c., இலைமுதலியகிள்ள. 3. To hold, take up, carry, &.--as with the beak, the fingers and thump, &c.; to take up a little, a pinch, &c., கொஞ்சமாயெடுக்க. வயிறுகிள்ளுகிறது. I am pinched with hunger. கிள்ளாக்கு, s. A bit of leaf, especially an ola given as a token of being sent by some superior, அதிகாரநறுக்கு. 2. A note of hand, a bit of leaf, a token from a person in authority--as a passport, warrant, letter of introduction, &c., உத்தார ச்சீட்டு. கிள்ளாப்பிறாண்டு, s. [prov.] A kind of child's play, pinching, ஓர்விளையாட்டு. 2. fig. Want of attention to guests, at a feast; distribution to them in small quantities, அலட்சியம். கிள்ளாப்பிறாண்டுபண்ண, inf. To supply guests too sparingly. 2. To take sparingly at a feast from modesty, delicacy, &c. 3. To give stintingly in charity, &c. கிள்ளிக்காட்ட, inf. To give a hint, a signal; also a summery, &c.; lit. a pinch. கிள்ளிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To give a little from a great quantity. 2. To give but little, a pinch, &c. கிள்ளித்தெளிக்கமாட்டான். local. He will not even give a jerk. கிள்ளிப்பிடுங்க, inf. To pinch and pluck off. கிள்ளிவிட, inf. To stir up; to excite, to instigate. கிள்ளிவைக்க, inf. To set or take a little from a heap--as the small mnemonic heaps in measuring grain. கிள்ளுகீரை, s. Greens plucked off from the root. அவன்உனக்குக்கிள்ளுக்கீரையோ. Is he a mere youngster, that you may cuff him as you please? கிள்ளுக்கீரைப்பண்ண, inf. To insult, to treat insultingly. கிள்ளுக்கீரையாய்நினைத்துப்பேச, inf. To speak contemptibly. கிள்ளு, v. noun. A pinch, a nip; a little piece of betel-leaf, tobacco, &c., கிள்ளப் பட்டதுண்டு. 2. A pinch in quantity, துணி க்கை. கிள்ளுங்கிழியுமாய்ப்போகக்கடவது. May this become null and void; mutilated and cancelled. 18)

kumpam (p. 123) s. An earthen pot, a water-pot, கலசம். 2. A large sacrificial pot filled with water, used on sacred occasions; also, a sacred pot painted with mystic diagrams, adorned with leaves, flowers, &c., and sometimes carried in procession, காகம். 3. A kind of arsenic, பலண்டுறு கம். 11. A kind of native arsenic, தா லம்பம். கும்பகலசம், s. A small pot of water, wound round with thread and otherwise ornamented, placed on heaps of grain, deified temporarily by incantations, and worshipped as the representative of a deity--as many pots being set as there are deities invoked on the occasion, மந் திரகும்பம். கும்பசலம், s. The water in the sacred pot, afterwards sprinkled on the people, or sipped by them, as possessing mystic virtue to cure disease, to expiate sin, &c., மந்திரகும்பநீர். கும்பவஸ்திரம், s. The cloth with which the sacrificial pot is adorned. கும்பஸ்தாபனம், s. Setting up sacred pots for worship, religious ceremonies, &c. கும்பதக்கணை-கும்பதட்சிணை, s. Money for the sacrificial pot as an offering to the gods, and taken by the officiating priest. கும்பாபிஷேகம், s. The consecration of an idol, a king, &c., by pouring water from the sacrificial pots with appropriate ceremonies, &c., கும்பநீரபிஷேகம். கும்பமெடுக்க, inf. To carry in procession the sacred pot with appropriate ceremonies. கும்பம்நிறுத்த--கும்பம்வைக்க--கும்பம் ஸ்்தாபிக்க, inf. To set up a sacrificial pot for worship. கும்பம்போட--கும்பங்்கொட்ட, inf. To perform a ceremony to the goddess Durga, after recovery from small-pox; also sometimes in fulfilment of a vew. கும்பகாரன், s. A potter, குயவன். Wils. p. 231. KUMBHAKARA. கும்பசம்பவன்--கும்பசன், s. A name of Agastya, அகஸ்தியன். Wils. p. 231. KUMBHASAMBHAVA. 2. A name of Dron'a, a priest, celebrated in Bharata, துரோணா சாரியன்; [ex கும்பம், a pot, et சன், born, the pot-born.] கும்பமுனி, s. Agastya, அகஸ்தியன். See கும்பயோனி. கும்பயோனி, s. A name of Agastya, அகஸ்தியன். 2. A name of Vasisht'a, வசிட் டன். 3. A name of Dron'a, துரோணாசாரியன். Wils. p. 231. KUMBHAYONI. [ex கும்பம், pot, et. யோனி, birth, the pot-born.] கும்பச்சுரை, s. A species of gourd. கும்பஞ்சரிய--கும்பஞ்சாய inf. [prov.] To hang or droop--as the கும்பம் and head of a person while near death. கும்பஞ்செய்ய, inf. To make a hillock over a grave, சமாதியின்மேல்மண்குவிக்க. 2. To inter the dead, especially such as died of cholera. கும்பப்பிளவை, s. A cancerous disease on the top of the back, ஓர்பிளவை. கும்பவாதம், s. One of the eight disorders of flatulence. (M. kulai (p. 127) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், ய, v. n. To become loose--as a knot, a tie, &c.; to be put out of place or form; to be dishevelled, untwisted, unravelled, கட்டவிழ. 2. To disperse--as a company, a flock, &c., to scatter, கலைய. 3. To be relaxed--as the mind from duty, austerities, &c.; to be diverted from its purpose or object, தளர. 4. To fall from chastity, to be violated, கற்பழிய. 5. To be disorganized, deranged, disordered; to suffer dissolution, சீர்குலைய. 6. To be troubled, disconcerted, confused in mind, shaken in purpose, மனந்தடுமாற. 7. To tremble, to be in trepidation, perturbation, நடுங்க. 8. To fear, or shew signs of fear, பயப்பட. 9. To shew signs of anger, சினக்குறிப்புக்காட்ட. 1. To be effaced, blotted out, cancelled, அழிந்துபோக. கொண்டைகுலைந்துபோயிற்று. The hair knot has become loosened, or untied. கட்டுக்குலைந்தது. The tie has become loosened. 2. The laws, customs or usages are abolished, or have fallen into desuetude. கூட்டங்குலைந்தது. The assembly has broken up; the family is scattered. சந்தைகுலைந்தது. The market people are dispersed. கோலமிட்டது குலைந்துபோய்விட்டது. The figures painted on the floor have been effaced. அடுக்குக்குலைய, inf. To be put into disorder--as a row or pile of things. 2. To become deranged--as one's business or circumstances. நியமங்குலைய, inf. To be diverted from a vow or some religious observance. நிலைகுலைய, inf. To fail in one's standing; to be ruined in one's circumstances. 2. To be discouraged; to lose self-command. 3. To be disconcerted, perplexed. 4. To be routed--as an army. 5. To swerve from duty. 6. To be fascinated. முனைகுலைய, inf. To be dispirited, discouraged--as a warrior; to be defeated --as an army. மானங்குலைய, inf. To be disgraced. 2. To be deflowered, to be ravished. மகிமைகுலைய, inf. To lose one's dignity, credit or honor. உருக்குலைய, inf. To be disfigured, to be worn out--as things by use or time. 2. To be emaciated. 3. To be putrefied --as a corpse. வேஷங்குலைய, inf. To be unmasked. 2. To lose one's reputation and character. மேனிகுலைய, inf. To be deformed. 2. To be disordered--as the hair, attire, &c. 3. To be in perturbation, or agitation. 4. To lose freshness, beauty, &c.; to wither--as the body. குலைகுலைய, inf. To tremble, to be in a state of trepidation, to be greatly troubled--as at sad news; to be agitated in mind and body, நடுநடுங்க. குலைவு, v. noun. Loosening, relaxing, கட்டுக்குலைவு. 2. Derangement, disorder, confusion, discomposure, dissolution, தா றுமாறு. 3. Violation, ruin, அழிவு. 4. Disperison, கலைவு. கூற்றையார்குலைவுறார்.
