அட்டம்
aṭṭam (p. 9) --அஷ்டம், s. Eight, எட்டு. (p.) Wils. p. 92. ASHTAN. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of feet with which the invocation of a poem may begin; four indicative of good, and four of evil. See கணம். அஷ்டகம், s. A collection or series of eight things, எட்டின்கூட்டம். 2. A Sanscrit poem, every eight stanzas of which are of the same kind of verse, வடமொழியினோர்பிரபந்தம். Wils. p. 91. ASHTAKA. அஷ்டகருமம், s. One of the eighty disorders from flatulency, combining eight bad symptoms. அஷ்டதனம், s. The eight special advantages; viz. 1. ரூபம், beauty. 2. சம்பத்து, acquisitions. 3. வித்தை, skill. 4. விவேகம், wit, ingenuity. 5. குணம், good disposition. 6. தனம், gold. 7. நல் லகுலம், good caste. 8. வயது, age. அஷ்டதானபரீட்சை, s. The eight symptoms of disease. See பரீட்சை. அஷ்டதிக்கயம், s. The eight elephants of the cardinal points, எட்டுத்திசை யானை. See திக்கயம். அஷ்டதிக்குப்பாலகர், s. The regents of the eight cardinal points, எண் டிசைப்பாலகர். See திக்குப்பாலகர். அஷ்டநாகம்--அஷ்டமாநாகம், s. The eight serpents, எண்வகைநாகம். See நாகம். அஷ்டபந்தனம், s. One of the eight forms of puja. 2. Binding the cardinal points by incantations, &c. See திக்குக்கட்டு. அஷ்டபந்தனஞ்சாத்த, inf. To put a mixture of wax, resin, vermilion, frankincense, butter, &c., in the niche around a stone idol. அஷ்டபோகம், s. The eight species of enjoyment. See போகம். அஷ்டப்பிரமாணம், s. The eight laws of evidence. See பிரமாணம். அஷ்டமணம், s. The eight kinds of marriage. See மணம். அஷ்டமச்சனி--அஷ்டமத்துச்சனி, s. Saturn situated in the eighth sign from that of one's birth, when his influence is deemed the most malignant, எட்டாமிடத்துச்சனி. அஷ்டமாந்தம், s. The eight kinds of disease in children. See மாந்தம். அஷ்டமி, s. The eighth day of the moon, either waxing or waning, எட் டாந்திதி. 2. The eighth of any series or number, எட்டாவது. அஷ்டமூர்த்தம், s. The eight forms assumed by Siva, spiritual and natural, regarded as his bodies. அஷ்டமூர்த்தி, s. Siva, சிவன். See the preceding. அஷ்டமூலம், s. The eight medicinal roots. See மூலம். அஷ்டமெய்ப்பரிசம்--அட்டமெய் ப்பரிசம், s. The eight sensations of the body. See மெய்ப்பரிசம். அஷ்டயோகம்--அஷ்டாங்கயோ கம், s. The eight things to be observed by a Yogi. See யோகம். அஷ்டலட்சணம், s. The eight attributes of God. See குணம். அஷ்டலட்சுமி, s. The goddess of fortune, or patroness of wordly things, எண்வகையிலக்குமி, viz. 1. தனலட்சுமி, patroness of riches. 2. தானியலட்சுமி, patroness of grain. 3. தைரியலட்சுமி, patroness of boldness. 4. சௌரியலட்சுமி, patroness of bravery. 5. வித்தியாலட்சுமி, patroness of science. 6. கீர்த்திலட்சுமி, partroness of fame. 7. விசயலட்சுமி, patroness of victory. 8. இராச்சியலட்சுமி, patroness of kingdoms. அஷ்டலோகபஸ்பம், s. A medicine composed of eight metals: 1. பொன், gold. 2. வெள்ளி, silver. 3. செம்பு, copper. 4. இரும்பு, iron. 5. வெண்கலம், white copper. 6. தரா, brass. 7. வங்கம், lead. 8. துத்தநாகம், zinc, with different salts and vegetable juices; the whole prepared by fire and reduced to powder to be used in various diseases. அஷ்டவசுக்கள், s. The eight வ சுக்கள், a class of தேவர் or gods. See வசுக்கள். அஷ்டவணிககுணம், s. The eight qualities of a good tradesman. See வ ணிககுணம். அஷ்டவருக்கம், s. The eight astrological divisions of the rising sign at the time of one's birth. அஷ்டவருக்கு, s. Impr. for அஷ் டவருக்கம் in the latter meaning. அஷ்டவிகாரம், s. The eight evil dispositions of men. See விகாரம். அஷ்டவூறு, s. The eight perceptions of the senses. See ஊறு. அஷ்டவெச்சம், s. The eight natural defects of the body. See எச்சம். அஷ்டவெற்றி, s. The eight kinds of conquest. See புறத்திணை. அஷ்டவெற்றிமாலை, s. The eight kinds of wreaths with which conquerors were crowned. See வெற்றிமாலை. அஷ்டாங்கம், s. The eight parts of the body, viz., the feet, hands, shoulders, forehead, breast. அஷ்டாங்கநமஸ்காரம், s. Worship with the eight members of the body, the feet, hands, shoulders, breast and forehead, கால்கள், கைகள், தோள்கள், மார்பு, நெற்றி என்னும் எண்வகையுறுப்புக்களினாற் செய்யும் வணக்கம். அஷ்டாங்கநிலந்தோய்தல், v. noun. எஃகு
eḥku (p. 73) கிறது, எஃகினது, ம், எஃக, v. n. To be elastic, stretchable, நெகிழ. 2. To become stretched or drawn out, நீள. 3. To become unfastened, unclasped, unloosed, &c., அவிழ. 4. To spring back, rebound--as a bent bow, bamboo, &c., எதிர் தாக்க. 5. To be lifted, drawn, or carried-as by a well beam, தாழ்ந்தெழும்ப. 6. [with the personal terminations.] To reach up, stretch one's self in reaching for a thing, எட்ட. 7. To climb by starts, stretch one's self for climbing, உதைந்தேற. 8. v. a. To pick, card, or comb cotton, &c., to card with a bow, பஞ்சுமுதலியகொட்ட. எஃகிப்பிடி. Stretch up and reach it. எஃகியெஃகிநடக்க. To spring or toss one's self in walking. துலாஅவனைக்கொண்டெஃகிற்று. The wellsweep has taken him up. ஈளையெஃகியெஃகியிழுக்கின்றது. The asthma convulses him. வில்லெஃகிற்று. The bow started back, resiled. எஃகினபஞ்சி, s. Picked or carded cotton. எஃகுகோல், s. எட்டு
eṭṭu (p. 73) s. The number eight denoted by அ, ஓரெண். 2. The eighth day funeral ceremony when food is presented to the manes of a deceased person, இறந்தஎட்டாம் நாட்சடங்கு; it is often contracted to எண். 3. Desire, ஆசை, impr. for எட்டை. எட்டிலேபத்திலே. Seldom, now and then. எட்டுக்குச்சோறிட்டுவைக்க. [prov.] To set rice, curry and other eatables for the deceased in the eighth day ceremony--as எட்டாந்துக்கங்கொண்டாட. எட்டுமிரண்டுமறியாதவன். A very dolt, an ignoramus. எட்டடிவிரியன், s. A kind of viper. எட்டனுருபு, s. The form of the eighth or vocative case. எட்டிலொன்று, s. One of eight things, one-eighth. எட்டுச்சார், s. [prov.] Two four square houses connected together. எட்டுத்திக்கு--எண்டிசை, s. The eight cardinal points or regions protected by as many supernal regents the supposed guardians of the earth. எட்டெட்டு--எவ்வெட்டு. Eight by eight-eight to each, eight of each. When used adjectively, எட்டு becomes எண்--as எண்ணெட்டு, eight times eight. எண்கணன், s. Brahma the eighteyed, பிரமன். எண்காற்புள், s. [in mythology.] The eight-footed bird. See சரபம், சம்பரம் and சிம்புள். எண்குணம், s. The eight divine attributes. See குணம். எண்குணத்தான்--எண்குணன், s. He who possesses the eight attributes-the perfect one--a term applied in நிகண் டு, to Siva, சிவன், Argha, அருகன். எண்கோணம், s. An octagon, eight-sided figure, அஷ்டகோணம். எண்சாண், s. Eight spans. எண்சாணுடம்பு, s. The human body, eight spans high, each person according to his own span. எண்சாணுடம்புக்குஞ்சிரசேபிரதானம். The head is the chief of the eight span-body; i. e. in cases of difficulty apply to the chief. எண்சிறப்புள்ளோன், s. Argha, அருகன். எண்சுவை, s. The eight poetic expressions of passion. See இரசம். எண்டோளன், s. Siva, சிவன்-the eight shouldered. (p.) எண்டோளி, s. Kali, காளி. 2. Durga, துர்க்கை. (p.) எண்ணாயிரம், s. Eight thousand. எண்ணாயிரவர், s. kṇkku (p. 88) s. Number, account, reckoning, calculation, computation, எண். 2. Letters, writing, written accounts, எழுத்து. 3. (fig.) Result, consequence, sum, event, முடிவு. 4. Thing, affair, circumstance, காரியம். கணக்குவருமளவுங்கிடக்கிறான். The dying man lingers until the destined hour arrives. இனியிங்கேயிருக்கக்கணக்கில்லை. There is no reason for our remaining here any longer. அவருக்குமெனக்குங்கணக்குவழக்குத்தீர்ந்தது. All accounts and disputes between him and me are settled. கொடுக்கல்வாங்கல்கணக்காய். To go, or turn out, wrong--as a calculation. கணக்குவகை, s. The cardinal, arithmetical rules, viz.: 1. தொகை, addition--சங்கலிதம். 2. பிரிவு, division--பாகா ரம். 3. பெருக்கு, multiplication--குணனம். 4. கழிவு, subtraction--விவகலிதம். கணக்கெழுத, inf. To write accounts, figures, &c. கணக்கொதுக்க, inf. To settle an account. 2. (fig.) To reduce one to poverty, to ruin one. அவருடையகணக்கொதுங்கிப்போயிற்று. His accounts are settled. 2. (fig.) He is almost ruined; i. e. reduced to poverty, or dead. கணக்கொப்புவிக்க, inf. To give account. கணக்கோலை, s. An ola of accounts. 2. Indented leaves of some palms. கணக்கோலைவிரிதல், v. noun. A winding coil, a wrapper, an envelope, நூன்முதலியவற்றின்சுற்று. 6. The girth of the foot-end of a tree, as a measure of its contents, மரச்சுற்று. 7. The felly of a wheel, உருளையின்சுற்று. 8. The surrounding wall of a fortification, சுற்றுமதில். 9. The circuit of a fortification, மதிற்சுற்று. 1. A roll, a scroll; a cigar, புகையிலைச்சுற்று. 11. [in combination.] A ring, விரற்சுற்று. 12. A whitlow, நகச்சுற்று. See சுற்று, v. n. எங்கள்சுற்றிலே. In our quarter or circle. சுற்றளவு, s. The extent of a circumference, the periphery; perimeter. சுற்றுக்கடுக்கன், s. A kind of earring. See under கடுக்கன். சுற்றுக்கட்டு, v. noun. A house with verandas, &c., all round. Also சுற்றுக்கட்டு வீடு. 2. Fabrication, fiction, கட்டுக்கதை. 3. Bribery, பரிதானம். சுற்றுக்கால், s. Neighborhood, an adjacent place, அயல். (c.) சுற்றுக்காலில்விசாரிக்கத்தெரியும். It can be known by inquiry in the neighborhood. சுற்றுக்காலிடுதல், v. noun. Dancing attendance on a court, &c. சுற்றுக்காலிட்டுக்கொண்டுதிரிய, inf. (fig.) To importune, கெஞ்சித்திரிய. சுற்றுக்கோட்டை, s. A circular fortification. சுற்றுத்தேவதை, s. A circle of idols. சுற்றுக்கோயில், s. Smaller temples around the larger. சுற்றுச்சுழல்--சுற்றுச்சுழற்சி, v. noun. Meanderings of a labyrinth. 2. Intricacy of an affair. 3. Involution in style; an intricate form of expression. 4. Circumlocution, paraphrase, &c. 5. Reverse or intricate arrangement of ideas in the construction of verse. (c.) இந்தச்சுற்றுச்சுழல்களெனக்குத்தெரியாது. I don't understand this round about way of proceeding. சுற்றுப்படாகை--சுற்றுவட்டகை, s. The country or villages round about. சுற்றுப்பலி--சுற்றுப்பூசை, s. [prov.] Offerings placed on the ground round a temple in the direction of the eight cardinal paints, for the guardian regents. 2. (fig.) Bribing all persons in authority, இலஞ்சங்கொடுக்கை. சுற்றுப்பட்டு--சுற்றுப்புறம், s. Place or region round about. See பட்டு. சுற்றுப்பட்டுக்கிராமம், s. Suburbs, villages adjoining a town. சுற்றுப்பிரகாரம், s. The circular area around a temple. 2. An outer court. சுற்றுமதில், s. A surronding wall, commonly of a temple. சுற்றுமுற்றும், adv. [prov. சுற்றும் பிற்றும்.] All about, all round. c. சுற்றுமுற்றும்பார்க்க, inf. To look on all sides. சுற்றுவழி, s. As சுற்று, 4. 2. Circumvention, getting money by tricks, தந்தி ரஞ்செய்தல். சுற்றிலும், [ablative of சுற்று.] (adverbially.) Round about, all about. சுற்றுவேலி, s. A surrounding hedge. நகச்சுற்று--உகிர்ச்சுற்று, s. tikku (p. 237) s. (Sa. Dik.) Region, quarter, point of the compass, direction, திசை. 2. Protection, shelter, aid, ஆதரவு. (c.) எனக்குத்திக்குமில்லைத்திசையுமில்லை. I have no support whatever. திக்குத்திசைதெரியாதஇருட்டு. Darkness so great that one knows not the points of compass or which way to go. திக்குநோக்கித்தெண்டனிடல். Making obeisance toward the place where a person is-a term of respect or reverence used in epistolary writings. திக்கெல்லாம்வெடிபடப்பேசுகிறான். He speaks loud enough to disturb all the points of compass. அஷ்டதிக்கு, s. The eight points of the compass are: 1. கிழக்கு, East. 2. தென் கிழக்கு, South-east. 3. தெற்கு, South. 4. தென்மேற்கு. South-west. 5. மேற்கு, West 6. வடமேற்கு, North-west. 7. வடக்கு, North. 8. வடகிழக்கு, North-east. Some add two others விசும்பு, the heavens or etherial regions, and பாதாளம், the abyss. தசதிக்கு--தசதிசை, s. The ten points for astrological purposes especially in choosing spots for building houses, &c., are named after certain animals. 1. கிழக்கு. கருடதிசை. 2. தென்கிழக்கு. பூனை த்திசை. 3. தெற்கு. சிங்கத்திசை. 4. தென்மேற்கு. கனகதிசை. 5. மேற்கு. நாகதிசை. 6. வடமே ற்கு, எலித்திசை. 7. வடக்கு. யானைத்திசை. 8. வடகிழக்கு. முயற்றிசை. 9. விசும்புத்திசை. 1. பாதாளத்திசை, which see.--Note The animals of the opposite points are natural foes to each other, the one being pursuer, and the other, the pursued. திக்கடைப்பு--திக்கெல்லை, s. [prov.] Boundaries of land, as mentioned in title deeds. திக்கற்றவன், appel. n. A forlorn, destitute, forsaken person. திக்காக, inf. [adverbiality.] In the direction of, toward. கிழக்குத்திக்காகப்போ. Go directly east. திக்காதிக்கு--திக்காலுக்கு, [prov.] In various directions, here and there, பலதிசையிலும். திக்காலுக்கொருத்தராய்ப்போய்விட்டார்கள். To bind or fortify the cardinal points by turning to each point, repeating the incantation, as இந்திராயநம, and prostrating in worship, to the regent whose protection is sought; then turning to the next point. திக்குக்கட்டு--திக்குப்பந்தனம், v. noun. Fortifying one's self on all sides by incantations, invoking the protection of the regents of the cardinal points. திக்குநோக்க, inf. To look in any direction, as expecting a friend, &c. 2. To direct one's course to any point. திக்குப்பாலகர்--திசாபாலகர், s. The regents of the eight cardinal points, as protectors of the earth, situated beyond the seventh circumambient sea, and invoked in the daily worship, &c. 1. இந்திரன், Indra, regent of the south-east, whose sign is இடி, the thunderbolt. 2. அக்கினி, Agni, regent of the south, east whose sign is புகை, smoke. 3. இயமன், Yama, regent of the south, whose sign is சிங்கம், lion. 4. நிருதி, Niruti, regent of the south-west, whose sign is நாய், a dog. 5. வருணன், Varuna, god of the waters, regent of the west, whose sign is இடபம், a bull. 6. வாயு, Vayu, god of the wind, regent of the north-west. whose sign is கழுதை, an ass. 7. குபேரன், Kuvera, god of riches, regent of the north, whose sign is யானை, an elephant. 8. ஈசானன், Isanan, regent of the northeast, whose sign காகம், a crow. திக்குப்பலி--திக்குப்பூசை, s. Performing puja. around a temple, toward the eight points, to obtain the protection of their regents. திக்குப்பல்லி, s. The chirping of a lizard, as indicating good or ill, according to the direction on which it is heard. திக்குமாறாட்டம், v. noun. ticai (p. 237) s. Region, quarter, point of the compass, direction, திக்கு. W. p. 41. Dis. 2. Influence of a planet on one's life, or fortune, according to the time allotted for it in the horoscope, favorable or unfavorable, கிரகபலம். (See தசை.) 3. Influence excited on the soul in any given period, state, stage, &c., during its transmigrations. (See முத்ததிசை and பெத்ததிசை.) 4. Principality, jurisdiction, princedom, பிர புவின்தேசம். (c.)--Note. The two திசை in the சரநூல் are: 1. இயங்குதிசை, the nostril through which the breath, passes for the time being; sometimes called, பூரணதிசை. 2. சூனியதிசை, the nostril through which the breath does not pass. See சூனியம். அவனுக்குத்திசையடிக்கிறது. A good planet is lavishing its favors on him. திசை, 4. The four cardinal points, also applied by some to the four boundaries of the Tamil country. 1. குண கடல் or கீழ்கடல், the sea to the east. 2. குடகுமலை, a mountain to the west. 3. குமரி, Cape Comorin, to the south, 4. வேங்கடம், a mountain to the north or திருப்பதி. திசைகட்ட, inf. To bind the points of compass by mantras. See திருக்குக்கட்ட. திசைக்காற்று, s. Wind which blows from some one point of the compass. திசைச்சொல்--திசைமொழி, s. Provincial words. See சொல். திசைதப்பிவர, inf. To arrive at a place undesignedly, having missed the proper road. 2. [ironically.] To say to one coming after a long interval as a slight reproof, you must have come by mistake. திசைமுகன், s. Brahma whose four faces are turned toward the four points respectively, பிரமன். திசையடிக்க--திசையடுக்க, inf. To be under the influence of a good planet; to be in fortunate circumstances. திசையுடையவர், appel. n. (Hon.) The principal of a district. See உடையார். எல்லாத்திசைக்கும். nrmpu (p. 270) s. Vein, artery, any blood vessel, any duct of the body, இரத்தநரம்பு. 2. A cat-gut-string of a musical instrument, as of a guitar, fiddle, &c., தந்தி. 3. Tendon, ligament, muscle, nerve, தசைநார். 4. Fibre in some fruits, also between the husk and shell of a cocoanut, நார். 5. Fibre, filament of leaves, tendril of a vine, &c., இலைநரம்பு. 6. String of a bow or of a similar machine used to beat cotton for carding it, வீன்னாண்முதலியன. 7. Continuation of the stem through the jack-fruit, custard-apple, &c., பழத்தினுள்நரம்பு. (c.) 8. (R.) A stringed instrument, யாழ்முதலியன. நரப்புக்கருவியாளர்--நரப்புக்கருவியை க்கொளுத்துமாக்கள், s. [plu.] Fiddlers, players on stringed instruments, lutists. நரம்பன், s. [fem. நரம்பி.] An emaciated person whose veins stand out, நரம் பெழுமுடம்பன். 2. A thin, meagre person, மெலிந்தோன். (c.) 3. [prov.] Tobacco leaf in which the fibres are prominent, ஓர்வகைப்புகையிலை. நரம்பினாதம்--நரம்பினோசை, s. The sound of the string of a musical instrument. நரம்புக்கயிறு, s. Cords sewed into the seams of a sail-cloth. 2. As நரம்பு. 2. நரம்புக்காய், s. A long thin fruit, as that of the முருங்கை. நரம்புச்சிலந்தி, s. [sometimes நரம்புச் சிலந்தி.] A long slender worm between the skin and muscles, guinea worm, ஓர்புண். (c.) 2. Boil on a nerve. நரம்புச்சுளுக்கு, s. Contraction of a ligament, or muscle. See சுளுக்கு. நரம்புப்பற்ற, inf. To become meagre, emaciated. நரம்புப்பிடிப்பு, v. noun. Cramp, spasm, convulsion, contraction of a muscle. நரம்புப்புடைத்தல், v. noun. nākam (p. 273) s. The cobra-de-capella of hooded snake, நல்லபாம்பு; 2. A naga, or demigod, having a human face, with the tail of a serpent, and the expanded neck of the cobra. The race is said to inhabit a region called Patala or நாகலோகம், under the earth. 3. Lead, நயம். 4. Black lead, காரியம். 5. The black monkey, கருங்குரங்கு. 6. Monkey in general, குரங்கின்பொது. 7. The eight famed serpents of the nether world employed at the eight cardinal points to support the earth are: 1. வாசுகி. 2. அனந்தன். 3. தக்ஷ கன். 4. சங்கபாலன். 5. குளிகன். 6. பதுமன். 7. மகாபதுமன். 8. கார்க்கோடன். To these the thousand headed ஆதிசேக்ஷன், king of the race, supporting the earth at the centre is sometimes numbered as a ninth. நாககள்ளி, s. A kind of recumbent shrub, ஓர்கள்ளி. நாககன்னி--நாககன்னிகை, s. Female of the naga race, especially a wife of Arjuna. நாகசாபம், s. Curse of the cobra. inflicted on a person for killing it. See நாகப்பிரிதஷ்டை. நாகசின்னம்--நாகசுரம்--நாகஸ்வரம். s. [com. நாகசரம்.] A kind of pipe or clarionet, one of the chief musical instruments, ஓர்துளைக்கருவி. நாகதத்துவம், s. One of the qualities of women ஸ்திரீகுணத்தொன்று. நாகதம்பிரான்--நாகதேவன், s. [prov.] the cobra snake regarded as a god, properly applied to ஆதிசேஷன், the chief of the nether world. See நல்லதம்பிரான். நாகதாளி, s. A species of தாளி, the root of which is used by snake dancers-the snake drawing back its head, and retiring when it is presended; also deemed an antidote to snake bites, Cacumis anguinus, L. நாகதாளிகள்ளி, s. A plant fed on by the silvestre or cochineal insect. Oblong Indian fig. (Ains.) நாகதிசை, s. West point, மேற்கு. நாகதீபம், s. A lamp in the form of a five headed cobra, ஐந்தலைவிளக்கு. நாகதேவி--நாகம்மா, s. The cobra, as a goddess. நாகநாதன்--நாகநாயகன், s. Indra, இந்திரன். 2. As நாகதேவன். நாகபடம், s. The spread and figured neck of the cobra, பாம்பின்படம். 2. [com. நாகவடம்.] An ear ornament in imitation of the spread neck of the cobra, ஓர்கா தணி. நாகபட்டணம், s. The town of Negapatam, ஓரூர். நாகபந்தம், s. One of the சித்திரகவி or curious kind of poems. நாகபாசம், s. [in mythol.] A kind of snake-like rope, with a noose or knot, and having life. It is obtained of the gods by austerities; and in war sent to entwine itself about the foe, பாம்புருவமான படைக்கலம். நாகப்பச்சை, s. A precious stone. See ஆற்றுப்பச்சை. நாகப்பற்று--நாகவாடை, s. Alloy of zine in silver, துத்துநாகப்பிடிப்பு. நாகப்பாம்பு, s. The cobra. நாகப்பிரதிஷ்டை, s. The making of a five headed cobra and worshipping it, to expiate the sin of killing a cobra by the person or his ancestors, which it is supposed prevents offspring. நாகப்பிரம்பு, s. A kind of rod in the shpe of a snake, ஓர்பிரம்பு. நாகப்பூ--நாகம்பூ, s. The flowers of the நாகம் tree, used medicinally; also called சிறுநாகப்பூ. நாகப்பூச்சி, s. A worm, an earth-worm, also called பூநாகம், by native doctors, who make of it several preparations. நாகமணல், s. Sand containing lead. நாகமணி--நாகரத்தினம், s. The gem supposed to be found in the head of the cobra. See ஐந்தலைநாகம். நாகமரம், s. A kind of red tree. நாகமல்லி--நாகமல்லிகை, s. A medicinal species of the மல்லிகை, used for dying black. The root forms a drug, White flowered justicia, Justicia nasuta, L. நாகமோடி, s. [with வேஷ்டி or சேலை.] A cloth with serpentine stripes, ஓர்பு டவை. நாகம்பூ, s. See நாகப்பூ. நாகராசா, s. The chief of the nagas, ஆதிசேடன். நாகலோகம், s. Swerga, தேவலோகம். 2. The world or region of the nagas under the earth, கீழுலகத்தொன்று. நாகவடம், s. See நாகபடம். நாகவராளி, s. A kind of tune, ஓரிரா கம். நாகவல்லி--நாகவள்ளி, s. A betel plant, வெற்றிலைக்கொடி. 2. [also நாகவல்லி முகூர்த்தம்.] The finishing ceremony of a marriage on the fifth day, கல்யாணச்ச டங்கிலொன்று. நாகவாடை, s. In gold coin, a slight alloy, supposed to be contracted from the metal of the mould, செம்பூறல். நாகவாய், s. An instrument used by turners, ஓர்கடைச்சற்கருவி. நாகாசனன், s. The Brahmany-kite, whose food is snakes; [ex அசனம், food.] நாகாத்திரம்--நாகாஸ்திரம், s. A dart, as நாகபாசம். நாகாந்தகன், s. Garuda, as the devourer of snakes, the vehicle of Vishnu, கருடன்; [ex அந்தகன்.] நாகாபரணம், s. An ornament in form of a cobra, worn by Siva, சிவனணியி னொன்று. நாகாபரணன், appel. n. nālu (p. 275) --நால், adj. Four, நான்கு. 2. (fig.) Many, general, multifold, universal, all, பல, as நாலுவித்தையும்.--Note. In combination before, க, ச, த, ப, the ல், becomes ற் and before ஞ, ந, ம, it is changed to ன்; sometimes to லா as நாலாகாரியமும், divers matters, various affairs, concerns, circumstances. நாலுகல்வியும். Different branches of knowledge. நாலுகாரியமுமறிந்தவன். A man of general knowledge, one acquainted with men and things. நாலுகையிலும். On all hands, on all sides. நாலுசாதியும். All the castes. 2. Various castes, several castes. நாலுதிக்கும். The four cardinal points. quarters, regions. 2. On all sides, in all directions. நாலுதிக்கிலுஞ்சிதறுண்டுபோக. To be scattered in different directions. நாலுதெருவுந்திரிகிறான். He strolls, or wanders through all the streets. நாலுமுக்கிலுமெதிர்தார்கள். They faced him on all sides. நாலையும்பார்த்துச்செய்யவேண்டும். One should act with due consideration of the whole matter. ஆலும்வேலும்பல்லுக்குறுதிநாலுமிரண்டுஞ்சொல்லுக் குறுதி. As the splint of the banyan and வேல் trees gives strength to the teeth (by rubbing them), so நாலடியார், and குறள், give strength to the speech. நாலடி--நாலடியார், s. The title of a poetical book on morals having four lines to each verse, and four hundred verses; or the book which ascended, according to the legend, four feet against the stream of the river Veiga, at Madura. நாலாஞ்சடங்கு--நாலாநாட்சடங்கு, s. Bathing of the new married pair on the fourth day with the ends of their cloths tied together. நாலாமுறைக்காய்ச்சல், s. Quartan fever. நாலாம்வருணம், s. The Sudras; (lit.) the fourth caste, சூத்திரசாதி. நாலாயிரப்பிரபந்தம், s. Four thousand poems made by twelve ஆழ்வார்கள். நாலாவிதம், s. [probably a change of நானாவிதம்.] Various kinds, varieties, sundry modes, &c. நாலுபேருமறிய--நாலுபேர்அறிய, inf. (adverbially) Publicly, before all, generaly or universally known. நால்வகைத்தோற்றம், s.
