iṭi (p. 45) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To pound, beat in a mortar, comminute, pulverize, reduce to flour, தூளாக்க. 2. To strike with the fist, a club or any thing blunt, slantingly, not with a direct blow, தாக்க. 3. To push, gore as a beast, to thrust, to butt--as an old calf in sucking, முட்ட. 4. To thunder, eject thunder-bolts, இடியிடிக்க. 5. To beat so as to break, bruise or batter to pieces, demolish, shatter, தகர்க்க. 6. To speak forcibly and emphatically, to use strong language in order to make an impression, to urge, insist upon with earnestness, உறுதிசொல்ல. 7. v. n. To throb, beat-as the head when aching: to beat, pant, palpitate, துடிக்க. 8. To strike--as a vessel against the shore--as a gun fired, &c., உதைக்க. 9. To sound, make a noise, ஒலிக்க. இடிக்குந் துணையாரை யாள்வாரையாரே கெடுக்குந் தகைமையவர்? iru (p. 50) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To sit, sit down, உட்கார. 2. To live, be alive, exist, உயிர்வாழ. 3. To abide, reside, dwell, sojourn or stay in an appropriate place--as men in houses--beasts in the forest--fishes in water, &c., தங்க. 4. To be, wait, remain, be present, be at hand, சமுகத்திலிருக்க. 5. To be in reserve, in store, to remain--as an overplus, மீந்திருக்க. 6. To be ready, prompt, waiting for any duty or project, to be on the point of acting, going, &c., ஆயத்தமாயிருக்க. 7. To settle in a place, become fixed, established, நிலைபெற. 8. To last, remain, continue, endure, நீடி க்க. (c.) With என்று prefixed, it expresses expectation, desire, &c.--as வருவானென்றி ருக்கிறோம். We expect him. In the past tense with the gerund of a verb it serves to express the plu-perfect tense of that verb--as வந்திருந்தான். He had come. The gerund is often used with the locative and expresses the idea of procession--as நகரத்திலிருந்துநீங்கினான். He departed from the city. Sometimes இருந்து is an expletive (அசைச்சொல்)--as எழுந்திருந்தான். He is risen. இரு இரு. Wait, wait. 2. Sit down. இருக்கச்சொல்லியும்போய்விட்டான். Although I told him to wait, he went away. இருக்கட்டும் இருக்கட்டும். Let it be (emphatically). இருக்கிறதவ்வளவுதான். That is all there is. இருந்தல்லவோபடுக்கவேண்டும். Is it not necessary to sit before lying down? a phrase used to express the necessity of caution or deliberation in any pursuit. இருந்தாற்போலே செத்துப்போனான். He died unexpectedly. இருந்திருந்துகாரியமிறுகிக்கொண்டது. The case has at length assumed a serious aspect. மீன்பிடிக்க இருக்கிறான். He is about to go afishing. அவனின்னமிருக்கிறானா? Is he still alive? Is he still there, not gone yet? காரியமிப்படியிருக்கிறது. Such is the state of affairs. அந்தத்துரையிருக்கிறநாளிலே. During the period of that governor. நெடுநாளிருப்பார்கள். They will live long. 2. They will remain here long. அதுமெய்யென்றிருந்தேன். I thought it was true. அவனிருந்தாகிறதென்ன? அவனிருந்தும்பயனெ ன்ன? Of what use is he? இருக்கை, v. noun. Sitting, உட் கார்ந்திருக்கை. 2. A seat, ஆசனம். 3. Being, a state, or condition of being--chiefly applicable to the human species, இருப்பு. 4. s. (p.) Residence, dwelling, situation, இருப்பிடம். 5. A town, village, ஊர்ப் பொது. இருப்பு, v. noun. Sitting, mode of sitting--as of ascetics, &c., இருக்கை. 2. Being, condition state of being--chiefly of the human species, நிலை. 3. s. Residence, abode, dwelling, வாசஸ்தலம். 4. The appropriate place of any person or thing, the place where a person or thing is established, உரியவிடம். 5. A seat, பீடம். 6. Surplus, balance in hand, remainder of cash in hand after an expenditure, கையிருப்பு. 7. Money in reserve, amount in a treasury, பொக்கசத்திருப்பு. 8. Remaining commodities, residue, மீந்திருப் பவை. 9. Stores, merchandise, wares, சரக்கிருப்பு. அவனிருந்த இருப்பிலே சம்பாதித்துக்கொண்டா ன். He acquired his wealth in one place; i. e. without running hither and thither. உன்னிடத்திலின்ன மிருப்பென்ன? How much still remains in your hand (in money or goods)? அவனிடத்திலிருப்பிருக்கிறது. He has got money in hand. இருப்பிடம், s. Habitation, place of residence, appropriate, customary or established place of a person or thing, உறைவிடம். 2. The seat, the posteriors, ஆசனம். இருப்புப்பார்க்க, inf. To see how mush still remains in the store. 60) *

ūṉṟu (p. 72) கிறேன், ஊன்றினேன், வே ன், ஊன்ற, v. a. To plant, set, fix, place firmly, rest upon with pressure--as a pole in propelling, fixing a boat, a musket, a lever, &c., நிறுத்த. 2. To lay down premises in an argument, நியாயத்திற்குமூலத்தைஸ்தாபிக்க. 3. To grasp, hold, strike root as trees, gain a firm footing, become established in a place, இறுகப்பிடிக்க. 4. v. n. To lean upon, recline, or depend on a staff, a person, &c., சார. 5. To be steadfast, firm, intent upon, உறுதியாய்நிற்க. ஊன்றக்கொடுத்ததடியென்னுச்சியையுடைக்கிறது. The staff which I gave him to lean upon, breaks my head; i. e. the good I have done him has turned out evil. கையூன்றிக்கரணம்போடவேண்டும். To tumble, the hands must be fixed on the ground; i. e. nothing can be done without money, means, &c. மழையூன்றிப்பேய்கிறது. It rains hard or incessantly. மேகங்காலூன்றிமழைபெய்தது. The clouds resting on the horizon poured down torrents. நிலத்திற்சிக்கெனவூன்றியவேர். Roots stuck firmly in the ground. ஒத்தகடப்பாட்டிற்றாளுன்றியெய்து. Exerting themselves in their proper calling. ஊன்றக்கட்ட, inf. To edify, ratify. ஊன்றிக்கேட்க, inf. To interrogate with much emphasis, press for an answer, உறுதியாய்வினாவ. 2. To hear attentively, கருத்தாய்ச்செவிகொடுக்க. ஊன்றிக்கொள்ள inf. To gain a firm footing in a place, office, &c.; to establish one's self, நிலைபெற. 2. To lean or depend upon, சார்ந்திருக்க. ஊன்றிச்சொல்ல, inf. To speak, or pronounce with distinct articulation, உறுதியாய்ச்சொல்ல. ஊன்றித்தாங்க, inf. To press on a pole in stopping, or poling a boat, ஊன்றித்தள்ள. ஊன்றிநடக்க, inf. To walk cautiously, firmly, &c.--as on slippery ground. 2. To walk firmly as one regaining the use of his limbs. 3. To walk with a firm foot so as to secure a quick pace. கோலையூன்றிக்கொண்டுநடக்கிறான். He walks with the assistance of a staff. ஊன்றிப்படிக்க, inf. To read poetry with proper pauses. 2. To sing with proper articulation, emphasis, &c. ஊன்றிப்பார்க்க, inf. To look steadfastly, intently, &c., நோக்கிப்பார்க்க. 2. To consider a thing maturely, to fix the mind intently on the object of consideration, ஆராய்ந்துபார்க்க. 3. To feel, try--as a fruit, &c., pressing it with the hand, கையினாலழுத்திப்பார்க்க. ஊன்றிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To seize firmly, hold tight, இறுகப்பிடிக்க. 2. To mark faults severely, கூர்மையாய்க்குற்றம் பிடிக்க. 3. To hold fast an opinion, பிடி வாதமாயிருக்க. ஊன்றிப்பேச, inf. To speak emphatically or forcibly, உறுதியாய்ப்பேச. இந்தநியாயத்திலூன்றிப்பேசு. Urge this argument, insist upon it. ஊன்றிப்போட, inf. To confirm an opinion, accusation, evidence, &c., ஸ்திரப்படுத்திவிட. ஊன்றிமிதிக்க, inf. To tread cautiously--as one on a well-beam, step firmly, steadily, &c. ஊன்றியெழுத, inf. To press or indent well in writing. ஊன்றிவைக்க, inf. To establish a family. 2. To settle one in life, business, &c. 3. to confirm, settle one in an opinion in a slight degree. ஊன்றுகால், s. A stay, a prop, உதைகால். ஊன்றுகோல், s. A staff, a walking stick, a support, பற்றுக்கோடு. எழுத்தையூன்ற, inf. To put a point over a letter which makes it mute. நாற்றையூன்ற, inf. To set plants.

ekkcckkm (p. 73) s. [vul.] Confusion, jumble, huddle, disorder, தாறுமாறு. 2. (Tel. எக்கஸக்கஎமு.) Unevenness, irregularity, ஒழுங்கின்மை. 3. Difference, Disparity, வித்தியாசம். 4. Scorn, derision, நிந்தை. எக்கச்சக்கமானஇடம் பத்திரமாய்ப்போ. This is an uneven, dangerous place, go cautiously. காரியமெக்கச்சக்கமாய்வந்திருக்கின்றது. The thing is ended in confusion. The affair has turned out disastrously; some danger is apprehended. எக்கச்சக்கமாய்ப்பேச, inf. To insult a person, use uncivil language. 2. To give an indirect answer, to speak at random. எக்கச்சக்கமானஆள், s. A faithless person. 2. An indecent person. 3. One who confuses every thing. எக்கச்சக்கம்பண்ண, inf. To derange things, put in confusion, huddle, jumble, தாறுமாறுசெய்ய. 2. To be insincere, to act differently from one's professions, or contrary to instructions, அகடவிகடஞ்செய்ய. 7)

eccri (p. 73) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To caution, warn, forewarn, pre-admonish, to give previous notice, புத்திசொல்ல. 2. (fig.) To discipline, கடிந் துகொள்ள. எச்சரித்துவைக்க, inf. To caution, discipline. 2. To hint, to mention slightly, to put one in mind of any thing. எச்சரிக்கை--எச்சரிப்பு, v. noun. and s. Caution, circumspection, vigilance, சாக்கிரதை. 2. Admonition, notice, advice, warning, புத்திசொல்லுகை. 3. Discipline, கண்டிப்பு. 4. A term used in complimentary language before idols, kings, &c.--as take care, come softly, &c., எச்சரிக்கைகூறுகை. 5. A species of poetry sung before an idol in processions, &c., the verses of which end with this word, ஓர்பாட்டு. எச்சரிக்கைபடிக்க, inf. To sing the எச்சரிக்கை song. எச்சரிக்கைபண்ண, inf. To caution, &c.--as எச்சரிக்க. எச்சரிக்கைப்பாட்டு, s. The எச்ச ரிக்கை song. எச்சரிக்கையாயிருக்க, inf. To be circumspect, to be cautious, take heed, to be vigilant. 24)

Hope, expectation, indulging fancy; fancied or prospective happiness, reverie, speculation, musing chimera, conceit, நம்பிக்கை. 6. Judgment, conviction, கருத்து. எண்ணமுற்றுரைக்கின். Were I to reckon and declare the number-- (நைட.) எண்ணியாரெண்ணமிழப்பர். The enemy who expected to conquer us will be disappointed. (குறள்.) தானென்கிறவெண்ணம்--நானென் கிறவெண்ணம், s. Self-conceit, self-importance. இன்னானென்கிறவெண்ணமவனுக்கில்லை. Rank of station with him is a matter of no consideration. எண்ணக்குறிப்பு, s. Motive, object, intention, design, நோக்கம். எண்ணங்குலைய, inf. To be perplexed in mind, மனங்கலங்க. 2. To be disconcerted in a plan, to be thwarted in one's expectation, எண்ணம்வீணாக. 3. To lose reputation, மதிப்புக்கெட. எண்ணங்கொண்டிருக்க, inf. To entertain hope. 2. To be anxious, to be in deep concern. 3. To intend, purpose. 4. To muse on, ponder. 5. To build castles in the air. எண்ணந்தப்ப, inf. To be disappointed, to prove incorrect--as an opinion, மதிப்புத்தவற. எண்ணத்தப்பு--எண்ணத்தவறு, s. Disrespect to a superior, அவமதிப்பு. 2. Place, location, situation, இடம். 7. A form of the locative case--that employed in grammatical examples, &c., ஏழனுருபு. 8. Kindness, benignity, graciousness, protection, கண்ணோட் டம். 9. Greatness, பெருமை. கண்கண்டதுகைசெய்யும். What the eye has seen the hand may do; i. e. we learn by observation. கண்காணநடந்தசெய்தி. Any event that happened before one's eyes. கண்ணிலேகாணப்படாது. I hate the very sight of him. 2. Even the sight of it is injurious; i. e. prejudicial--spoken where mutual animosity exists--as in the kite and snake, &c. 3. (p.) It will not appear to the eye. கண்ணிலேகுத்துகிறதோ. Does it hurt your eyes? why do you envy me, &c. கண்ணுக்கின்பமானபொருள். That which is delectable to the eye. கண்ணுக்குக்கண்ணானவன். One as precious or dear as the eye. கண்ணுக்குப்புண்ணுமல்லக்காண்பார்க்குநோயுமல் ல. There is no wound to be seen, nor any visible symptoms of disease; the sickness, if real, is internal. கண்ணுக்குள்ளேநிற்கின்றது. It is fixed in my eyes, imagination, &c.-- as a departed friend, a thing lost, &c. இராசாவுக்குக்கண்மந்திரி. A counsellor is the eye of the king. அண்டைவீட்டுச்சண்டைகண்ணுக்குக்குளிர்ச்சி.... The quarrels of neighbors are gratifying to the eyes of the instigator. என்கண்ணே. [An expression of endearment.] Oh, thou, my eyes; i. e. my darling. இறந்தனையோஎன்கண்ணேஎன்னுயிரேஅபிமாவின் றென்செய்தாயே. Ah! Abima, my eyes, my life, art thou dead! whence this cruel deed? (பார.) அவன்கண்ணவிந்துபோயிற்று. He has lost his sight. அவன்கண்ணிலேபட்டேன். I suffer from his eye, his evil eye is upon me, he envies me. கட்கட்டி, s. [prov.] As கண்கட்டி. கட்செவி, s. A snake--its eyes being considered the organs of hearing as well as of sight, பாம்பு. (p.) கட்புலன், s. The sense of sight, நேத்திரேந்திரியம். ஓர்கட்பறை, s. A tambourine. கண்கடை, s. [in combination.] Corner of the eye. கண்கடைதெரியாதவன், s. A watchman. கண்காணஞ்செலுத்த--கண்காணம் பண்ண, inf. To superintend, watch. கண்காணம்வைக்க, inf. To appoint an inspector, to set a watch. கண்காணி, s. An inspector, an overseer, a supervisor, an agent, மேல்வி சாரிப்புக்காரன். 2. One who looks after the subordinates in a government office, சிரே ஷ்டாதிகாரி. 3. The hot sensation of the eyes caused by neglecting to bathe, by disease, &c., கண் ணெரிவு. கண்காரர், s. Persons who sit before a conjurer, looking at the magical paint without winking, and to whom the discoveries are made, அஞ்ச னம்பார்ப்போர். கண்குத்திபாம்பு, s. A bright green snake that is said to strike at the eye, the eye-snake; a whip-snake. கண்குவளை, s. The socket of the eye, கட்குழி. கண்குழிதல், v. noun. Sinking of the eyes by disease, emaciation, &c. கண்குளிரப்பார்க்க, inf. To refresh the eyes by viewing a pleasing object--as a dear child, &c., to feast the eyes. கண்குளிர்ச்சி, v. noun. Refreshing, gratifying, pleasing to the sight. கண்குறிப்பு, s. A significant expression of the eye, கண்சமிக்கை. கண்கூச, inf. To see obscurely from the eyes being dazzled. 2. To be weak-sighted, tender-eyed. கண்கூடு, s. Socket of the eye, கண்குவளை. 2. A thing in sight, ocular demonstration, பிரத்தியட்சம். கண்கூடாய், adv. Evidently, demonstrably. கண்கூர்மை, s. Sharpness of sight. கண்கூலி, s. A present for finding a thing lost. கண்கெட, inf. To be struck blind. 2. adv. In spite of one's own sight, to the destruction of one's own eyes, &c. கண்கெடச்செய்ய, inf. To do what one knows to be wrong--as presenting defiled food to an idol, friend, &c. கண்கெடப்பேச, inf. To falsify the evidence of one's own eyes in delivering testimony, &c. கண்கெட்டதெய்வம், s. The blind deity--a profane and familiar phrase among the vulgar used in seasons of distress. கண்கொள்ளாக்காட்சி, s. A great or wonderful object, a thing over-powering to the sight, அதிசயக்காட்சி. கண்சமிக்கை, s. A wink with the eyes. கண்சாடை, s. A winking at, taking faint notice of, &c. கண்சாய்ப்பு, s. A side-look in displeasure. 2. Connivance. 3. Partiality, favor shown by a wink, &c. கண்சாய்ப்பாய்ப்பார்க்க, inf. To look jealously, to have an evil eye. கண்சாய்ப்பாயிருக்க, inf. To overlook, be partial in judgment, to connive. கண்சிமிட்ட, inf. To make a signal with the eye. 2. To wink, to twinkle through weakness of eyes. கண்சிமிட்டு, s. A signal of the eye. கண்சுருட்ட, inf. To entice one by uncommon beauty, lustre, &c., to cantivate, to fascinate. கண்செருகல்--கண்சொருகல், v. noun. Rolling up of the eyes--as in swoons, fits, death-bed, and sometimes in sleep. கண்ணஞ்ச, inf. To fear, dread, as excited by the sight of a superior, lightning, &c. கண்ணஞ்சனம், s. Collyrium, the ointment used to blacken the eye-lashes. 2. Blue vitriol. கண்ணடைக்க, inf. To choke, stop up--as the orifice of a spring, a nipple, துவாரமடைக்க. கண்ணடைய, inf. To become choked or stopped up--as a hole, &c., தூவாரமடைபட. 2. [prov.] To cease shooting--as the head or heart of a plant, பயிரின்குருத்துக்கண்ணடைய. இடியப்பக்குழல்கண்ணடைந்துபோயிற்று. The இடியப்ப mould is stopped up. கண்ணடைந்தபால், s. Milk injured by being kept too long. கண்ணப்பன், s. One of the sixtythree devotees of Siva who scooped out his own eye and consecrated it to that deity--also called திண்ணன். கண்ணயர்ந்துபோதல், v. noun. [impr. கண்ணசந்துபொதல்.] Being heavy or drowsy. கண்ணரிப்பு, v. noun. A kind of itching disease in the eye, கண்ணில்வரு மோர்நோய். கண்ணருள், s. Favor. கண்ணழற்சி, v. noun. Burning of the eyes, கண்ணெரிச்சல். 2. (fig.) Envy, பொறாமை. கண்ணழற்சிப்பட, inf. To look with envious eye, to envy. கண்ணறை, s. Breadth, width, அ கலம். 2. [prov.] Hole, crevice, chink, orifice, cell, &c., வட்டத்துவாரம். 3. Mesh of a net, interstice of ratan work, &c., வலைமுதலியவற்றின்கண். 4. Cell in a honeycomb, white ants' nests, &c., தேன்கூட்ட றை. 5. Blindness, குருடு. 6. Pitilessness, hard-heartedness, inexorableness, வன் னெஞ்சு. ஊறாவன்பிற்கண்ணறைமன்னனொருதேவி. The wife of the unrelenting blind sovereign (D'hritarashtra). (பாரதம்.) கண்ணறையன், s. A blind person. 2. A hard-hearted person. கண்ணன், s. One who has eyes. கண்ணாகப்பார்க்க, inf. To take care of--as one's eyes, கண்போலப்பார்க்க. கண்ணாடி--கண்ணடி, s. A glass, glass in general, தருப்பணம். 2. A mirror, a looking glass, முகம்பார்க்குங்கண்ணாடி. 3. Spectacles, மூக்குக்கண்ணாடி. கண்ணாடிச்சால், s. Blank squares, or balks left between the furrows in cross ploughing, திடரிடைவிட்டுழுமுழவு. கண்ணாடிச்சுவர், s. A small wall to screen the fire in a room. கண்ணாடிபார்க்க, inf. To look into a looking glass. கண்ணாடிப்பலகை, s. A plank with a peeping-hole. கண்ணாடிப்புடவை, s. A thin inferior kind of cloth. முகக்கண்ணாடி, s. A looking glass. மூக்குக்கண்ணாடி, s. Spectacles. தூரதிஷ்டிக்கண்ணாடி, s. Spy-glass, or telescope. சூரியகாந்தக்கண்ணாடி, s. Crystal lens or burning glass. சந்திரகாந்தக்கண்ணாடி, s. A fabulous gem supposed to be formed of the congelation of the rays of the sun. பூதக்கண்ணாடி, s. Microscope. பாலக்கண்ணாடி, s. Spectacles adapted to young eyes. நிலைக்கண்ணாடி, s. A standing looking glass, a stationary mirror. கண்ணாமண்டை, s. [prop. கண்மண் டை.] s. The skull near the eyes. கண்ணாம்பூச்சி, s. [com.] Covering the eyes with the hands or doubling the upper eyelid over the eyeball inside out, and running round as children in play, ஓர்விளையாட்டு. 2. Giddiness, dizziness, கண்மயக்கம். கண்ணாம்பூச்சியாட, inf. To run about in play with the eyes covered, or with the eyelid doubled over. கண்ணாம்பொத்தி, s. [prop. கண் பொத்தி.] A game, children's play, hideand-seek. கண்பொத்திவிளையாட, inf. To play at hide-and-seek. கண்ணாயிரம், s. The argus of the Hindus. கண்ணாயிருக்க, inf. To be watchful, vigilant, attentive, looking steadfastly, நோக்கமாயிருக்க. கண்ணுக்குக்கண்ணாயிருக்கிறான். He is as dear or precious as one's eyes. கண்ணாரக்காண, inf. To see plainly, to see with one's own eyes, பிரத்தியட் சமாகக்காண. கண்ணிடுக்குதல், v. noun. Being sleepy, drowsy. கண்ணிதழ்--கண்ணிமை, s. Eyelid, கண்ணினதிமை. 2. A wink of the eye, கண்ணிமைப்பு. See இமை. கண்ணிமைக்க, inf. To wink. கண்ணிலி, s. A blind person, குரு டன். 2. (p.) Dhritarashtra, திரிதராட் டிரன். கண்ணிலேபூப்பட, inf. To have specks in the black of the eye. கண்ணிலொற்ற, inf. To apply a fomentation, a flower, &c., to the eye. கண்ணீர், s. Tears. ஏழைஅழுதகண்ணீர்கூரியவாளுக்கொக்கும். The tears of the poor are like a sharp sword. கண்ணீராக்கி, s. Crude camphor, பச்சைக்கருப்பூரம். கண்ணீருகுக்க--கண்ணீர்சொரிய --கண்ணீர்வடிக்க--கண்ணீர்விட, inf. To shed tears, கண்ணீர்சிந்த. கண்ணீர்ததும்ப--தளம்ப, inf. To have the eyes suffused with tears. கண்ணுக்கரசன், s. Blue vitriol, து ருசி. கண்ணுக்கினியான், s. The பொன் னாங்காணி plant. 2. The கரிசலாங்கண்ணி plant, lit. one pleasing to the eye. கண்ணுக்குக்கண்ணானவன், s. A person dear to one as his own eyes. கண்ணுக்குத்தைக்க, inf. To attract the eyes, to arrest the attention. கண்ணுதல், s. Siva, whose forehead contains an eye, the frontal-eyed, சிவன். (p.) கண்ணுதலோன்வெற்பு, s. The same as இரசதமலை. கண்ணுராவி, s. A pitiable sight, a miserable condition deserving commiseration. கண்ணுலைமூடி, s. A rice-strainer. கண்ணுற, inf. To see, view, காண. 2. To reach, arrive at, இடத்தைச்சேர. கண்ணுறக்கம், s. Sleep, a nap, நித் திரை. கண்ணுறங்க, inf. To sleep, நித்தி ரைசெய்ய. கண்ணுறுத்த, inf. To smart as the eyes, from any foreign substance--as dust, ophthalmia, &c., கண்ணிலுறுத்த. என்கண்ணையுறுத்துகின்றது. Something hurts my eye. 2. My eye smarts from ophthalmia. கண்ணூறு--கண்ணேறு, s. The blight of the eyes, an unlucky look supposed to cause sickness, &c., திட்டி தோஷம். விண்ணேறுதப்பினாலுங்கண்ணேறுதப்பாது. One may escape a thunderbolt, but to escape an evil eye is impossible. மதன்கண்ணேறெய்தலுங்கழிந்ததோ. (Has the waist) become so attenuated through the influence of kama's eyes? கண்ணூறுகழிக்க, inf. To dispel the blight of an evil eye by prescribed ceremonies. கண்ணூறுபட, inf. To suffer or experience the ill effects of evil eyes. கண்ணெச்சில், s. Fascinating, bewitching, blighting, &c.--as by a glance, and otherwise, as in food looked on with an envious eye, &c., கண்ணூறு. கருப்புரவிளக்கமேந்திக்கண்ணெச்சில்கழித்திட் டாரே. They waved the lighted camphor and removed the blight of the eye. (நைட.) கண்ணெரிவு, v. noun. Smarting of the eyes from want of sleep or through intemperance. கண்ணெறிய, inf. To glance, க ண்ணாற்பார்க்க. 2. To cast libidinous glances, to look wistfully, விருப்பமாகப்பார்க்க. கண்ணேணி, s. A bamboo ladder, மூங்கிலேணி. கண்ணேறிட்டுப்பார்க்க, inf. To look intently or steadily on an object. 2. To look up straight forward, ஏறெடுத் துப்பார்க்க. கண்ணைக்காட்ட, inf. To indicate wishes by a glance. கண்ணைப்பிடுங்க, inf. To pluck out the eye. கண்ணைமூடிக்கொண்டிருக்க--கண் மூடிக்கொண்டிருக்க inf. To connive at. 2. To be indifferent about, to be careless. என்னைப்பாராமற்கண்மூடிக்கொண்டார். He does not look at me, he has closed his eyes on me. கண்ணொட்ட, inf. To be sleepy. எனக்குக்கண்ணொட்டிக்கொண்டுவருகிறது. I am sleepy. கண்ணொளி, s. The brightness of the eye, the light of the eyes, கண்ணிலிரு க்குமொளி. கண்ணோ--கண்ணோக்காடு--கண் ணோய்--கண்ணோவு--கண்வலி, s. Sore eyes, ophthalmia. கண்ணோக்க, inf. To look intently, gaze, to eye, see, look upon, பார்க்க. கண்ணோக்கு, v. noun. Gaze, glance, கண்பார்வை. கண்ணோட, inf. To run out--as the sight on an object of desire, to look at with desire, cast wistful or lustful glances, விருப்பமாகப்பார்க்க. 2. To watch, look after, inspect, superintend, பார்வை யிட. 3. To examine cursorily--as a book, writing, &c., மேலெழுச்சியாய்ப்பார்க்க. 4. To be kind, benignant, gracious, to treat kindly, be indulgent, தயவாயிருக்க. 5. To be partial, to have the mind biased toward one, to yield to feelings of compassion, தாட்சிணியஞ்செய்ய.--Note. All the meanings have reference to sight as prompting to passion and action. உடையவன்கண்ணோடாப்பயிர், s. Growing corn not looked after by the owner. கண்ணோட்டம், s. A glance, a look, the scope of the sight, கடைக்கண்பா ர்வை. 2. Regard to persons, either in a good or bad sense, kindness as prompted at the moment, partiality, favoritism, glow of kind feelings toward a friend, reluctance to deny his request, &c., கடாட்சம். 3. Civility, complaisance, regard, மரியாதை. 4. Discerning by the eye, close examination, scrutiny, பார்வை யிடுகை. இவனவனிடத்திற்கண்ணோட்டம்வைத்தான். He was very kind to him. கண்திட்டம்--கண்மதிப்பு, s. Guess by the eye, or opinion from sight. கண்திட்டி--கண்திஷ்டி--கண்தீமை, s. The blight of the eye, திட்டிதோஷம். கண்திட்டிகழிக்க, inf. To dispel by ceremonies the supposed blight of the eye. கண்திட்டிபட, inf. To be blighted by the glance of an evil eye. கண்தெரியாதவன், s. A blind man. கண்பட, inf. To sleep, நித்திரை செய்ய. (p.) கண்படை, s. Sleep, நித்திரை. 2. A bed or other convenience for sleeping, மனிதர்படுக்கை. (p.) கண்படைநிலை, s. A poem consisting of pleasing stories suitable for recital by physicians and courtiers in an assembly of kings and great personages to soothe the mind and induce sleep. (p.) கண்பட்டை, s. An eye-lid. கண்பரிகாரம், s. Doctoring the eyes, the profession of an oculist, கண்வை த்தியம். கண்பரிகாரி, s. An oculist, கண் வைத்தியன். கண்பாடு, s. Sleep, நித்திரை. (p.) கண்பாய்ச்சல், v. noun. A glance. கண்பார்க்க, inf. To examine precious stones, elephants, horses, &c., for sale, பரீட்சிக்க. 2. To cast a benignant look on one, கடாட்சிக்க. 3. To pity or compassionate, இரங்க. கண்பிடி, s. [prov.] A small jackfruit or a small bunch of palmyra or other fruit attached to a larger one. கண்புகைச்சல், v. noun. A disease of the eye. ஓர்நோய். 2. Dimness of sight from age, disease, கண்மங்கல். கண்புதைக்க. inf. To cover the eyes, to hoodwink, கண்பொத்த. (p.) 2. To weaken or prevent the sight--as dust, &c. கண்பூத்தல், v. noun. Failing--as the eyes by earnest looking, கண்மயங்கல். கண்பொங்க, inf. To form--as rheum in the eyes, குட்டினாற்கண்பொங்க. கண்பொத்த, inf. To stop the eyes with the fingers, to hoodwink, blindfold, கண்மூட. கண்பொத்திவிளையாட, inf. To play at hide-and-seek, to play at blindman's-buff, விழிமூடியாட. கண்பொறிதட்ட, inf. To flash --as the eyes in fainting, by a blow, &c., கண்கூச. 2. To be over-powered--as the sight by vivid lightning, brilliant gems, &c., கண்மழுங்க. கண்பொன்ற, inf. To have the sight diminished, dimmed by age, disease in the eyes, long application, கண் கெட. 2. [vul.] To be blear-eyed, கண் செம்ம. கண்போட, inf. To look on objects wistfully with an intention of securing them, to fall in love, இச்சிக்க. கண்மங்க, inf. To become dull, obscure, heavy--said of the eyes, கண் ணொளிகுறைய. கண்மடை, s. Inferior channels for water--as in gardens, சிறுமடை. கண்மட்டம்--கண்மட்டு--கண்ம திப்பு--கண்மதியம், s. Guess by the eyeas appears to the sight; done, wrought, leveled, &c., by sight. கண்மட்டவேலை, s. Work executed by the eye without the aid of a measure or model. கண்மணி--கண்விழி, s. The apple of the eye, கருமணி. என்கண்மணியே. My darling, lit. thou who art the apple of my eye. கண்மண்டை, s. The skull near the eyes. கண்மயக்கு, s. Fascination of the eyes, bewitching, captivating, கண்ணினா ல்மயக்குமயக்கு. கண்மயிர், s. The eye-lashes. கண்மருட்சி, s. The dazzling of the eye. கண்மருட்டு, s. Fascinating with the eye, கண்ணினாற்செய்யுமருட்டு. கண்மருந்து, s. Medicine for the eyes. 2. A collyrium for ornamenting the eyelids of females. கண்மலர், s. An ornament for the eyes of an idol, a gold or silver ornament to be placed over the eye of an idol and devoted to the temple, விக்கிரகங்க ட்கணியும்விழிமலர். கண்மறிக்காட்டல், v. noun. [prov.] Checking, forbidding, frowning on, or inviting by a signal of the eye. கண்மாயம், s. Ocular deception, illusion, sudden appearance and disappearance--as of a phantom, a thing stolen, &c., கண்ணுக்குத்தோன்றிமறைகை. கண்மின்ன, inf. To flash--as the eyes on fainting or by a blow. கண்மின்னியார்த்தல், v. noun. Growing dim as the eyes when one is dizzy. கண்முகிழ்க்க--கண்மூட, inf. To shut the eyes, cover the eyes, to hoodwink, கண்ணிமைசேர்க்க. 2. To become drowsy, go to sleep, தூங்க. 3. To die, சாவ. 4. To be careless, indifferent, unconcerned at any thing, கவலையில்லா திருக்க. கண்மூடிவிழிக்குமுன்னம். In less than a wink. ஒருகண்மூடியொருகண்விழிக்கிறவன். He who is partial, biased. என்னைப்பாராமற்கண்மூடிக்கொண்டான். He does not look at me, he has closed his eyes on me. கண்மை, s. A collyrium for the eyelids, கண்ணுக்கிடுமை. 2. A kind of benignant look, கண்ணோட்டம். கண்வரி, s. Streaks, especially red, in the white of the eye. கண்வளர, inf. To go to sleep, to sleep, நித்திரைசெய்ய. கண்விட, inf. To break--as the eye of a needle, the rivet hole of a knife, ஊசிமுதலியவற்றின்கண்ணொடிய. 2. To form as butter in churning, வெண்ணெய் திரள. கண்விடுக்க, inf. To paint the black of the eyes in a picture, சித்திரப்பா வைக்குக்கண்வரைய. 2. To open the eyes of an idol giving it the appearance of sight, விக்கிரகத்துக்குக்கண்திறக்க. (சிந்தாமணி.) To open the eyes --as young creatures after birth, இளங் குழவிகண்திறக்க. 3. To awake from sleep, நித்திரைநீங்க. 4. To revive--as plants after planting, &c., பயிர்செழிக்க. கண்விழிப்பு, v. noun. Watchfulness, circumspection, caution, விழிப்பாயி ருக்கை. கண்வினைஞர்--கண்வினையாளர், s. Smiths, mechanics, artisans, கம்மியர். (p.) கண்வெளித்தல், v. noun. Seeing clearly, having the sight restored after disease of the eyes or dimness. கண்வைக்க, inf. To be benignant, gracious, kind, &c., toward one, கிருபை வைக்க. 2. To look wistfully upon a thing, to desire, look at lustfully, விருப்பம் வைக்க. 3. To form as a hole in an ulcer, புண்ணிற்கண்வைக்க. அவளவன்மேற்கண்வைத்தாள். She cast her eyes upon him. வாக்குக்கண்--மாறுகண், s. A squint eye. மயிற்றோகைக்கண், s. The spangles in a peacock's tail. கடைக்கண், s. The corner of the eyes. கடைக்கண்பார்வை, s. A sideglance. 2. Regard, favor, condescension. சல்லடைக்கண், s. The holes of a sieve or strainer. ஓரக்கண், s. As வாக்குக்கண். ஓரக்கண்ணன், s. One who is squint-eyed. பருக்கண், s. The orifice of a boil. உடலக்கண்ணன், s. Indra who has his whole frame bespangled with eyes. (கல்லா.) (p.) இல்லிக்கண்ணன், s. One who cannot bear the light and contracts the eyes to shut it out. மாலைக்கண், s. A disease of the eye which causes the sight to fail in the dark. வலைக்கண், s. The meshes of a net. ஊற்றுக்கண், s. The orifice of a spring. பறைக்கண், s. The end of a drum. கொடுங்கண்--தறுகண்--வன்கண், s. Envy, invidiousness. ஆயிரங்கண்ணன், s. Indra who has a thousand eyes. (p.) கூசுகண், s. As சூகைக்கண். விரிகண், s. A sore in the eyelids which causes them to dilate. அவிகண், s. A variety of sore eyes. இழிகண், s. A disease of the eye which causes the eyelids to hang down. அழுகண், s. A complaint in the eye which causes a continual dropping of tears. சொறிகண், s. An itching complaint in the eyelids. சிம்புறுகண், s. A complaint in the eye causing the lids to come out in flakes. பூமியின்கண். In the earth. 13) *

kaṉṉikai (p. 102) s. A virgin undefloured, a girl unmarried, கன்னிமையழிவில்லாள். 2. The five கன்னிகை, viz.: அகலிகை, the wife of கௌதமன்; துரோபதை, the wife of the பஞ்ச பாண்்டவர் or five brothers, sons of the king பாண்டு; சீதை, the wife of இராமன்; தாரை the wife of வாலி; and மண்டோதரி, the wife of இரா வணன். 3. To keep one's self, to act so as to avoid blame, scandal, &c. காத்தல், v. noun. Defending, guarding, &c. காப்பு, v. noun. Preservation, defence, guard, protection, cherishing, பாது காப்பு. 2. Watching, caution, vigilance, காவல். 3. Warding off, guarding against, இரட்சிப்பு. 4. s. An amulet, இரட்சாபந்தன ம். 5. A bangle or bracelet,கைக்காப்பு. 6. A bandage tied round the arm, in token of a vow for hearing a sacred book read at a temple, keeping a feast, &c.-serving also as an amulet for the time, and as a monitory to practise abstinence and other required duties, to abstain from ceremonial pollutions, &c.-- also tied on the arms of a newly-married couple for four days, who are to keep apart for this time--also on the candidates for initiation by the Guru, மஞ்சள்நூ ற்காப்பு. 7. The invocation at the commencement of all poems, imploring the protection, aid, blessing of the god worshipped by the author, and often of others, தெய்வவணக்கங்கூறுங்காப்பு. 8. The arm-ring of the Guru, worn on the right arm as an amulet on special occasions, கோயிற்குருவணியுங்காப்பு. 9. A string tied round medical plants with incantations to avert evil effects in their use,மூலிகைக் குக்கட்டுங்காப்பு. 1. (p.) A surrounding wall, a fortification, a fence, a hedge, &c., மதில். 11. A door, கதவு. 12. Sacred ashes worn as an amulet, திருநீறு. 13. Clothes, ஆடை. காப்புக்கட்டில்லாமலெல்லாருமுள்ளேவரலாமா. Is it proper for all to come in without restraint? கன்னிகாதானம்--கன்னியாதானம், s. I have been waiting here many days. யாகாவாராயினுநாகாக்ககாவாக்காற்சோகாப்பர்சொல் லிழுக்குப்பட்டு. Whatever besides you leave unguarded, guard your tongue; otherwise errors of speech and consequent miscry will ensue. (திருவள்.) பொன்காத்தபூதம்போலே. As a demon watching gold; i. e. an act of no value to any one. காத்திருக்க, inf. To wait, wait for, expect, watch for, look for. கன்னியாகுமரி, s. The கன்னி river. 2. Cape Comorin, the southern point of India. கன்னியாஸ்திரி, s. A girl arrived at maturity, a virgin, கன்னிப்பெண். கன்னியிற்பெறும்புதல்வன், s. The son of a young unmarried woman. கன்னியீற்று, s. cāvatāṉam (p. 180) s. Care, caution, prudence, circumspection, observation, consideration, எச்சரிக்கை. 2. Accuracy, scrupulousness, exactness, தவறாமை; [ex ச, et அ, வதானம்.] (c.) சாவதானமாயிருக்க, inf. To be cautious, attentive. சாவதானமாய்க்கேட்க, inf. To listen attentively. சாவதானமாய்நடக்க, inf. To walk circumspectly. சாவதானமாய்ப்பார்க்க--சாவதானம் பண்ண, inf. To take care. 34)

cūtāṉam (p. 200) s. [prop. சுஸ்தானம்.] Caution, care, circumspection, எச்சரிப்பு. (c.) சூதானத்துக்கழிவில்லை. There is no detriment from cautiousness. சூதானப்படுத்த--சூதானம்பண்ண, inf. To deposit in a safe place, to take care. சூதானமான இடம், s. A safe place. 14) *

Other specifications are included, as இயற்சொல். common words; திரிசொல், learned words; திசைச்சொல், provincial words, or according to the நன்னூல், words peculiar to or derived from any of the Tamil provinces around the Madura district, or form any of the Indian cognate languages; வடசொல் or வடமொழி, words of Sanscrit origin. அவனுடையபேச்சு காற்சொல்லுமரைச்சொல்லும்..... He speaks broken language; (lit.) half and quarter words. அப்படிச்சொல்லு. Say so--as a command; or as meaning--that is right. ஒருசொல்லுள்ளமனிதன்--ஒருசொல் வாசகன், s. A man steadfast to his word. சொல்லிற்பிழைதேட, inf. To detect a fault in speech. சொல்லணி--சொல்லலங்காரம், s. [in Rhetoric.] Figures founded in words, as distinguished from figures of thought. A quibble, pun, play on words. சொற்சிமிட்டு, s. [prov.] The use of a little word or particle, easily overlooked yet materially affecting the meaning. 2. Artfulness, dexterity or ingenuity in the use of words. சொற்சிறப்பு, s. Superiority of one word over another to convey the author's meaning, or to suit the connection 2.
