அங்குரம்
angkuram (p. 5) s. Germ, shoot, sprout from a seed, blade, முளை. 2. A kind of shrub, குப்பைமேனி. Wils. p. 9. ANKURA. (p.) அங்குரார்ப்பணம், s. A ceremony preliminary to a religious or nuptial feast, in which seed is made to sprout, as an auspicious sign; ex அர்ப்பணம், placing. 43)

ati (p. 10) A Sanscrit prefix, implying superiority, in place, quality or quantity, உயர்வுப்பொருளைக்காட்டுமடைசொல். Wils. p. 22. AD'HI. அதிகதம், s. That which is out of reach, past, சென்றது; ex கதம், gone. Wils. p. 22. AD'HIGATA. அதிகரணம், s. Supremacy, superiority. Wils. p. 22. AD'HIKARANA. அதிகுணன், s. The deity, he who is possessed of all attributes, or according to Hinduism, he who is above all attributes, who is without attributes, கடவுள். அதிதூதன், s. A chief ambassador, a chief messenger. See வானோர்கணம்-9. அதிதேவதை, s. A specific or tutelary deity, as Saraswati presiding over the arts, &c. Wils. p. 22. AD'HIDEVATA. அதிரதம், s. The first of the four kinds of royal chariots used in war, நால்வகைத்தேரிலொன்று. அதிரதன், s. A warrior of a particular class fighting in a car, one who protects his chariot and army and detroys his enemy, முழுத்தேரரசன். Wils. p. 23. AD'HIRATHA. அதிரூபம், s. A superior form, fine features, excellence of figure. அதிவாசம், s. The day before a feast, preparation day. 2. A religious ceremony, with perfumes and other ingredients to purify a house, person, &c. 3. Great perfume. அதிவேதனம், s. அன்னம்
aṉṉam (p. 34) s. Boiled rice, food in general, சோறு. Wils. p. 4. ANNA. அன்னக்களை, s. Faintness through hunger; languor on eating too much food when weak. அன்னக்காவடி, s. Boiled rice carried with ceremony under a canopy, &c. to be presented to the idol. 2. Boiled rice begged from house to house, to be distributed to mendicants. அன்னக்கொடி, s. A flag hoisted on a choultry to give notice that rice is distributed gratuitously. அன்னக்கொடை, s. Liberality in giving boiled rice. அன்னசத்திரம்--அன்னசாலை, s. A choultry where boiled rice is distributed gratuitously. அன்னசாரம்--அன்னரசம், s. The essence of food, chyle. Wils. p. 4. ANNARASA. 2. Conjee, rice-gruel, கஞ்சி. அன்னசுத்தி, s. Ghee, நெய். அன்னதாதா--அன்னதாதிரு, s. One who gives food, a charitable person. Wils. p. 4. ANNADATRU. அன்னதானம், s. The giving of boiled rice as alms; [ex தானம்.] Wils. p. 4. ANNADANA. அன்னதானப்பிரபு, s. A very liberal man who gives boiled rice daily, &c. அன்னபானம், s. Food and drink. அன்னபானாதிகள், s. Food, drink, &c. அன்னப்பாகு, s. (Anat.) Chyme. அன்னப்பால், s. The water strained from boiled rice, conjee. அன்னப்பிராசனம், s. The ceremony of feeding a child with rice for the first time--if a boy, on the sixth or any other even month afterwards, as the eighth, tenth, &c.--if a daughter, on any odd month after the sixth. The direction is given in காசிகாண்டம், and is regularly practised by Brahmans, குழ ந்தைக்குமுன்னர்ச்சோறூட்டல். Wils. p. 4. ANNAPRASHANA. அன்னமயகோசம், s. The gross material body, sustained by food--as one of the investitures or supports of any soul, சரீரம். See கோசம். Wils. p. 4. ANNAMAYAKOSHA. அன்னரேகை, s. [in palmistry.] A line on the hand indicating abundance of the means of support to him who has it, கையிரேகையினொன்று. அன்னவஸ்திரம், s. Food and clothing. அன்னவூறல், s. Rice-gruel, or water in which rice has been boiled, கஞ்சி. அன்னாபிடேகம்--அன்னாபிஷேகம், s. Anointing an idol with boiled rice. அன்னாலாத்தி, s. Lamps of boiled rice before an idol, or a new married couple, to dispel the fascination of unlucky eyes. See ஆலாத்தி. 9)
அபிஷேகம்
apiṣēkam (p. 17) --அபிடேகம், s. Sacred or royal bathing, or anointing as an inaugurating ceremony a king, a guru, &c.; the daily bathing of an idol with Ganges' water, oil, ghee, milk, திருமுழுக்கு. Wils. p. 56. AB'HISHEKA. அபிஷேகக்கூட்டு, s. Macerated spices, &c.. for anointing an idol. அபிஷேகம்பண்ண, inf. To anoint, pour water, milk, butter, honey, fruit, &c., upon an idol. கனகாபிஷேகம், s. The pouring of gold. பட்டாபிஷேகம், s. Unction, the act of initiating into office. அன்னாபிஷேகம், s. The pouring of boiled rice. 6) *

aṟuku (p. 33) s. A kind of grass deemed sacred to Ganesa and others, ஓர்புல். Agrostis linearis, L. (c.) 2. (p.) A lion, சிங்கம். 3. The yali--a fabulous beast, யாளி. 4. Male tiger, ஆண்புலி. 5. An elephant, யானை. அறுகரிசி, s. Sacred grass and rice combined and put on the thighs, shoulders and heads, of the new married pair, at the time of marriage, as an auspicious ceremony. உப்பறுகு--கொடியறுகு--ஆனைய றுகு--கூந்தலறுகு--வெள்ளறுகு--சிற்றறுகு, s. Different kinds of அறுகு. 57)
அலகு
alku (p. 27) s. The blade of a weapon or instrument, the top or head of an arrow, ஆயுதத்தினலகு. 2. Weapon, arms in general, ஆயுதப்பொது. 3. Glow worm, மின் மினி. 4. A bird's beak, பறவைமூக்கு. 5. An ear of rice or other grain, பயிர்க்கதிர். 6. Number, calculation, எண். 7. Poetic numbers of feet or syllables, செய்யுளலகு. 8. Cowries, small shells used as signs of numbers in reckoning, பலகறை. 9. Seeds of மகிழ் tree, மகிழம்விதை, Mimusops elengi, L. 1. Grains of paddy, நென்மணி. 11. A broom, a besom, துடைப்பம். (p.) 12. (c.) The mandibles, jaws, கொடிறு. 13. [prov.] Breadth, extension, விசாலம். 14. A weaver's stay or staff to adjust a warp, நெசவுநூற் பாவினலகு. அரணை அலகுதிறக்கிறதில்லை. The eft does not bite, (lit.) does not open its jaws. அலகிட, inf. To reckon, compute, number, கணக்குப்பார்க்க. 2. To measure verse, scan, செய்யுட்கோசையூட்டும்பொருட்ட லகிட. 3. To sweep the sacred precincts of a temple as one of the duties of the சரிதைக்காரன், or religionist of the lowest degree in the Siva system, கோயிலலகிட. அலகுகட்ட, inf. To bind (charm) the mouth of a serpent, a dog, &c. 2. To charm a weapon to prevent its cutting, &c. 3. To settle an account. அலகுகழிக்க, inf. To subtract or deduct a number in reckoning with kernels, seeds, &c. அலகுகிட்டுகை, v. noun. Having the lock-jaw. அலகுகூடை, s. A basket made of twigs closely twisted together, used to draw water. அலகுநிலை, s. The result of a reckoning, as the sum in addition, product in multiplication, &c. அலகுநிறுத்தல், v. noun. Placing a sword upright. This is a ceremony performed in the pagoda of துரோபதை, before the festival in honor to her is commenced. A sword is set up--the point downwards-- on the side of a vessel filled with water, and if it does not move, they think that the ceremony will be attended with success. This is also done in private houses. அலகுபருப்பு, s. A kind of pea. அலகுபனை, s. The long, flat leaved palmyra, Borassus flabelliformis, L. அலகுபாக்கு, s. Betel-nut sliced thin and boiled in water in which its husk has been boiled, giving it a reddish hue. அலகுபோட, inf. To perform a penance, in which the tongue is pierced with an iron wire, strings are drawn through the sides of the loins, or the breast cut with a knife. (c.) அலகுப்பூட்டு, v. noun. Closing the mouth in penance. அலகுவிறைப்பு, v. noun. Becoming cold and stiff as the jaws in childbirth, fits, hunger, &c. வேப்பலகு, s. The rib or small stalk of the leaves of the margosa tree. திருவலகு, s. A broom used in pagodas. சோற்றலகு, s. A sort of rice strainer, made of ribs of palm leaves. 23)
ஆசமனம்
ācamaṉam (p. 36) s. Sipping water before religious ceremonies, before and after meals, &c., from the palm of the hand and swallowing it. The ceremony is followed by touching various parts of the body. and repeating in Sanscrit short mystical expressions or incantations of homage to the respective gods, which are supposed to ward off evil and secure benefits, மந்திரத் தானீர்வாயிற்கொள்கை; [ex ஆ, et சமு, to eat.] Wils. p. 16. āṭṭai (p. 38) s. [in combination.] A year, வருடம். (c.) ஆட்டைக்கருமம்--ஆட்டைத்திதி --ஆட்டைத்திவசம், s. The first anniversary funeral ceremony, performed on the same day of the moon on which the person died. (c.) மூவாட்டைநெல், s. Rice three years old. (c.) 17)
ஆனயம்
āṉayam (p. 44) --ஆனயனம், s. Bringing, கொண்டுவருகை. 2. The ceremony of investing a young Hindu of any of the first three classes, with the sacred thread worn over the left shoulder. See உபநய னம். Wils. p. 113. ANAYA and ANAYANA. 12) *

āmam (p. 38) s. Rawness, state of being un-dressed, un-ripe or un-annealed, பாகஞ் செய்யப்பட்டிராமை. (p.) 2. A kind of disease, ஓர்நோய். Wils. p. 116. AMA. ஆமகணம், s. Diarrh&oe;a, சீதக்க ட்டு. ஆமசன்னி, s. A fit of apoplexy in chidren, caused by ஆமசுரம். ஆமசிராத்தம், s. Raw or un-dressed articles of food, presented to the officiating brahman, at the annual ceremony, for the dead. (p.) ஆமசுரம், s. A certain fever in children. ஆமசூலை, s. One of the சூலை, an arthritic disease. 114) *
ஆலாத்தி
ālātti (p. 42) s. [in poetry, sometimes contr. to ஆலத்தி.] The ceremony of waving lighted camphor, to avert the blight of the eyes of unlucky persons, on marriage or other special occasions; also in front of the idol, after the procession, before it is taken into the temple. The term is applied both to the light, &c. waved, and the waving--as ஆரதி. ஆலாத்திகாட்ட, inf. To wave the above offering. ஆலாத்தித்தட்டு, s. The salver in which the ஆலாத்தி is waved. 2. One of the decks in a ship. ஆலாத்தியெடுக்க, inf. To take lighted camphor, &c. before the idol and wave it round; also before a newmarried couple, &c. 15) *

irutu (p. 50) s. A season of two months. (See பருவம்.) 2. The monthly flowings of females, catamenia, மகளிர்சூதகம். Wils. p. 168. RUTU. 3. The first menstrual discharge, மகளிர்முதற்பூப்பு. 4. (தத்துவ-24.) Office, function, operation--as the evolving, carrying forward and reduction of nature by the deity, கடவுளின்முத்தொழில். இருதுசாந்தி--இருதுசாந்திக்கலியா ணம், s. The ceremony incident to a girl's arriving at puberty, when offerings are made to the moon to appease that malignant deity, that he may not injure her or attempt her chastity, சோபனகலியா ணம். இருதுவாக, inf. To menstruate, பூக்க. 71) *
இழ
iẕ (p. 55) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To lose, forfeit, to be bereaved of, to suffer loss, இழந்துபோக. இழப்பு, v. noun. Loss, privation, forfeiture, இழந்துவிடுகை. இழப்புணி, s. One who has lost a child, a husband, property, &c. இழவு, v. noun. Loss, deprivation, forfeiture, bereavement, நஷ்டம். 2. Death, மரணம். அந்தவீட்டிலேயிழவுபட்டபாடாயிருக்கிறது...... There is affliction in that house, as if a death had occurred there. இழவுகாத்தல், v. noun. [vul.] Keeping close to the house--as mourners till after the eighth day of the funeral ceremony. இழவுகாரன்--இழவுக்குரியவன், s. The chief mourner at the funeral. இழவுகொடுக்க--இழவுக்கடிக்க, inf. To mourn at a funeral, to condole with, to bewail the dead--as women do, beating their breasts, &c. அப்படிச்செய்துபோட்டு அவனோடே இழவு கொடுக்கிறதார்? Who will expose himself to be troubled by him, for doing so? இழவுகொண்டாடுதல், v. noun. Mourning for the dead, accompained by external gestures, lamentations, beating the breast, &c., either at the funeral, or at stated periods afterwards. இழவுக்குப்போக, inf. To go to condole with. இழவுசொல்ல, inf. To invite to, or notify concerning a funeral. இழவுவிழுதல், v. noun. Dying-a word used in imprecations, &c. அவனுக்கிழவுவிழ. May death fall upon him. இழவுவினவ, inf. To condole with mourners, inquiring after the dead, embracing, &c. இழவுவீடு, s. A house where a death has taken place. இழவோலை, s. A funeral notice or invitation, a funeral letter or ola, சாவோலை. 33)
