The deity, he who is possessed of all attributes, or according to Hinduism, he who is above all attributes, who is without attributes, கடவுள். அதிதூதன், s. A chief ambassador, a chief messenger. See வானோர்கணம்-9. அதிதேவதை, s. A specific or tutelary deity, as Saraswati presiding over the arts, &c. Wils. p. 22. AD'HIDEVATA. அதிரதம், s. The first of the four kinds of royal chariots used in war, நால்வகைத்தேரிலொன்று. அதிரதன், s. A superior form, fine features, excellence of figure. அதிவாசம், s. The day before a feast, preparation day. 2. atiru (p. 11) --அதிர், கிறேன், அதிர்ந் தேன், வேன், அதிர, v. n. To shake, quake, as by an earthquake, he fall of a tree, or the rolling of chariots, கம்பிக்க. 2. To be startled, alarmed as by the sound of a cannon, the report of thieves, the prevalence of an epidemic, &c., thrill, நடுங்க. 3. To resound attended with a shock, as by thunder, by an earthquake; to sound as a drum, &c., reverberate, vibrate, roar as beasts, tinckle as bells or ornaments, ஆர வாரிக்க. பூமியதிரநடவாதபுண்ணியவான். A good man, one who is careful not to give offence. அதிர்குரல்முரசம். The loud sounding drum. பூமியதிரல், v. noun. An earthquake, trembling of the earth. அதிர், v. noun. Boiled rice carried with ceremony under a canopy, &c. to be presented to the idol. 2. Boiled rice begged from house to house, to be distributed to mendicants. அன்னக்கொடி, s. A flag hoisted on a choultry to give notice that rice is distributed gratuitously. அன்னக்கொடை, s. Liberality in giving boiled rice. அன்னசத்திரம்--அன்னசாலை, s. A choultry where boiled rice is distributed gratuitously. அன்னசாரம்--அன்னரசம், s. The essence of food, chyle. Wils. p. 4. ANNARASA. 2. Conjee, rice-gruel, கஞ்சி. அன்னசுத்தி, s. Ghee, நெய். அன்னதாதா--அன்னதாதிரு, s. One who gives food, a charitable person. Wils. p. 4. ANNADATRU. அன்னதானம், s. The giving of boiled rice as alms; [ex தானம்.] Wils. p. 4. ANNADANA. அன்னதானப்பிரபு, s. A very liberal man who gives boiled rice daily, &c. அன்னபானம், s. Food and drink. அன்னபானாதிகள், s. Food, drink, &c. அன்னப்பாகு, s. (Anat.) Chyme. அன்னப்பால், s. The water strained from boiled rice, conjee. அன்னப்பிராசனம், s. The ceremony of feeding a child with rice for the first time--if a boy, on the sixth or any other even month afterwards, as the eighth, tenth, &c.--if a daughter, on any odd month after the sixth. The direction is given in காசிகாண்டம், and is regularly practised by Brahmans, குழ ந்தைக்குமுன்னர்ச்சோறூட்டல். Wils. p. 4. ANNAPRASHANA. அன்னமயகோசம், s. The gross material body, sustained by food--as one of the investitures or supports of any soul, சரீரம். See கோசம். Wils. p. 4. ANNAMAYAKOSHA. அன்னரேகை, s. [in palmistry.] A line on the hand indicating abundance of the means of support to him who has it, கையிரேகையினொன்று. அன்னவஸ்திரம், s. Food and clothing. அன்னவூறல், s. Rice-gruel, or water in which rice has been boiled, கஞ்சி. அன்னாபிடேகம்--அன்னாபிஷேகம், s. Anointing an idol with boiled rice. அன்னாலாத்தி, s. Lamps of boiled rice before an idol, or a new married couple, to dispel the fascination of unlucky eyes. See ஆலாத்தி. 9)

amai (p. 20) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To yield, come to a right state, submit, comply, obey, acquiesce, சம்மதிக்க. 2. To become settled, peaceable, quiet; to subside, படிய. 3. To be at one's disposal, as a thing that may be effected, acquired, brought to good order, &c., வசமாக. 4. To fit, suit, join nicely, be adapted to, இசைய. 5. To be destined, be subject to a divine appointment or destiny, good or bad, விதிக்குட்பட. 6. To be made, formed, adjusted, திருந்த. 7. To be satisfied, contented, composed, comfortable, resigned, திருத்தியாக. 8. (in the third person only) To be enough, sufficient, போ துமாக. 9. To happen, occur, come to pass, சம்பவிக்க. 1. To belong to, be connected or combined with, be appropriate to, பொ ருந்த. 11. To be obtained, அமர. (p.)--Note. Most of the meanings of this word have reference to the mind. சாஸ்திரத்திற்கமைந்துநடக்கிறவன், He is one who obeyed the shasters. ஐம்புலனமைந்தவன், s. One who has suppressed the five senses, or to whom the senses are subject. இது என்விசாரணைக்கமைந்த காரியம். It is a matter at my disposal. என்விருப்பத்திற்கமைந்தபடிநடந்தது. It has occurred to my satisfaction. சுகதுக்கம் ஊழின்படி அமையும். Good and evil are appointed according to former character. செயுநீர்மைசெய்யாதமைகலாவாறு. Owing to dissatisfaction at inability to do charity. (குறள். 22. அதி.) அமையவுண்மின். Eat enough. இரட்சிப்பு இறைவனுக்கமைந்தது. Salvation is of God. அமையாமை, neg. v. noun. Unsubmission, insubordination, disquietness, unfitness, கீழ்ப்படியாமை. அமைவு, v. noun. Subjection, subordination, acquiescence, பொருந்துகை. 2. Composure of mind, tranquillity, contentment, மனவமைதி. 3. Repression of the senses, subjection of the mental powers, அடக்கம். அமைவடக்கம், s. Concealment, security, silence. அமைவன், s. arumai (p. 26) s. Rareness, scarceness, scantiness, அபூர்வம். 2. Preciousness, desirableness, pre-eminence. மேன்மை. 3. Difficulty, laboriousness, வருத்தம். 4. Impossibility, unattainableness, கூடாமை. 5. Delicacy, சிறப்பு.--Note. As an adjective, மை is dropped before a consonant with a change of that, when required in combination, and அரு may be changed into அரிய with or without து, or the last vowel may be dropped, and the first lengthened as in ஆருயிர், precious life. அருங்கலைநாயகன், s. Buddha, the lord of eminent sciences, புத்தன். அருங்கலைவினோதன், s. one devoted to learning; one whose time is spent in cultivating the arts and sciences. அருங்கிடை, s. Extreme hunger from long abstinence, &c., பட்டிணி. அருங்கிடைகிடக்க, inf. To be in a starving condition. அருங்கேடன், s. One who is imperishable, who will always prosper. (குறள்.) 2. (c.) A very treacherous man, a profligate wretch. அருங்கோடை, s. Vehement heat. 2. Severe drought. அருஞ்சிறை, s. Rigorous servitude, கடுஞ்சிறை. (Ram.) 2. Hell, நரகம். அருநரகம், s. A cruel hell. அருநிலை, s. Difficult standing said of a ford when impassable. அருநிழல், s. A slight shade. அருநெறி, s. A narrow or difficult way. 2. Gate-way or entrance. அருந்தமிழ், s. Elegant Tamil. அருந்தவம், s. Rigid austerities. அருந்தவர், s. Ascetics. அருந்தூதன், s. A tormentor, one who inflicts pain, வேதனைசெய்வோன். அருமருந்து, s. Nectar, அமிர்தம். In classical works, this in the form அருமருந்தன்னபிள்ளை is contracted to அருமந்த, precious as nectar, as, அருமந்தபிள்ளை. A very dear child, அருமந்ததேர். A very costly chariot. அருமறை, s. The sacred Vedas. Ell. 145. 4. அருமறைக்கொடியோன், s. A name of Dronácharya, the military preceptor of the Pandavas and Kurus, because of the Vedic device on his banner. அருமைப்படுத்த, inf. To make scarce, hard, difficult. 2. To impart reluctantly, make much of. அரும்பண்டம், s. A rare article, choice wares, valuable commodity. அரும்பிணி, s. An incurable disease. (நாலடி.) Ell. 118. அரும்பூட்டு, s. [prov.] A girdle, waist-string, necklace, &c., so short as scarcely to be brought to meet, a string, rope, &c., so short as to be tied with difficulty, a bow-string so short as to be liable to break if brought up too far, any thing too little, too short, too narrow, &c., எட்டாப்பூட்டு. 2. Difficulty in settling a negotiation, agreement, &c., இணக்கக்கூடாமை. 3. Entanglement, ensnarement, மோசத்திலகப்படுகை. 4. Forced connection in language, clauses disconnected or not joined naturally, difficult or unnatural; construction, தொடர்ச்சி யின்மை. சொற்களையரும்பூட்டாய்த் தொடுத்துப்பேசினான். He spoke in an unconnected manner. அரும்பொருள், s. Excellent advice, hard doctrine, a rare or difficult meaning. 2. A choice or precious article. அருவினை, s. A great sin. அருவினைகளைந்து. The five great sins. தெய்வமொருவனென்றேத்தி யொருமித்திருந்தால் அருவினைகளைந்துமறும். The five great sins will be forgiven him who worships the one God with singleness of heart. (கம்பன்.) 5)

aṟm (p. 33) --அறன், s. Moral or religious duty, virtue; the performance of good works according to the shasters--including justice, hospitality, liberality, &c., also what is prescribed as the duty to be practised by each particular caste. Compare தருமம். The thirty-two acts of charity are the following; viz.: 1. ஆதுலர்க்குச்சாலை, building houses for the poor. 2. ஓதுவார்க் குணவு, giving maintenance and education. 3. அறுசமயத்தார்க்குண்டி, feeding persons of either of the six religious sects. 4. பசுவுக்கு வாயுறை, feeding cows. 5. சிறைச்சோறு, feeding prisoners. 6. ஐயம், giving alms. 7. தின் பண்டநல்கல், providing for travellers. 8. அறவைச்சோறு, feeding the destitute. 9. மகப் பெறுவித்தல், rendering assistance in childbirth. 1. மகவுவளர்த்தல், nourishing children. 11. மகப்பால்வார்த்தல், giving milk to infants. 12. அறவைப்பிணஞ்சுடுதல், burning or burying the poor. 13. அறவைத்தூரியம், furnishing clothes to the destitute. 14. சுண்ணம், giving chunam to use with betel. 15. நோய்மருந்து, giving medicine to the sick. 16. வண்ணார், paying for washing the clothes of the poor. 17. நாவிதர், the same for shaving. 18. கண்ணாடி, giving a looking glass. 19. காதோலை, giving cadjan or palmyra leaves to women for their ears. 2. கண்மருந்து, giving black paint to women for the eyes. 21. தலைக்கெண்ணெய், giving oil for the head. 22. பெண்போகம், aid to enjoy a woman. 23. பிறர்துயர்காத்தல், redressing injuries. 24. தண்ணீர்ப்பந்தல், keeping water pandals to give drink to the thirsty. 25. மடம், erecting inns or buildings for the reception of Brahmans, pilgrims, &c. 26. தடம், making tanks. 27. சோலை, planting topes, groves, &c. 28. ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, erecting stakes at which cows may rub themselves. 29. விலங்கிற்குணவு, feeding all kinds of animals. 3. ஏறுவிடுதல், giving a bull for covering a cow. 31. விலைகொடுத்துயிர்காத்தல், giving money to save life. 32. கன்னிகாதானம், giving assistance towards marriage. (p.) அறஞ்செயவிரும்பு. Desire to do charity. அறக்காடு, s. A desert place for burning the dead, சுடுகாடு. அறக்கொடியோன், s. God; He whose banner is charity, கடவுள். அறங்கடை--அறன்கடை, s. Sin, what is opposed to virtue; nonconformity to the shasters, பாவம். அறங்கடையிற்செல்லார். They who will not enter in the way of vice. அறச்சாலை, s. An alms-house, a hall or room where the thirty-two acts of charity are practised. அறச்செல்வி--அறத்தின்மூர்த்தி, s. Parvati, பார்வதி, famous for alms-giving. 2. A name of தருமதேவதை. அறத்தின்மைந்தன்--அறன்மகன், s. The elder of the five Pandavas. அறத்துப்பால்--அறப்பால், s. A section of the book குறள், which treats of அறம். அறத்துறுப்பு, s. The attributes or constituent parts of charity or virtue, including dispositions and actions. Eight are given; viz.: 1. ஐயப்படாமை, being void of doubt or scepticism. 2. விருப் பின்மை, freedom from covetousness or of inordinate desire for any supposed good. 3. வெறுப்பின்மை, freedom from disgust. 4. மயக்கமின்மை, being void of perplexity. 5. பழியை நீக்கல், avoiding reproaches, being void of censoriousness. 6. அழிந்தோ ரைநிறுத்தல், relieving the distressed or ruined. 7. அறம்விளக்கல், bringing into light the nature of benefaction and expounding it. 8. பேரன்புடைமை, the possession of abundant love. அறத்தைக்காப்போன், s. The god ஐயன். அறநிலை, s. The practice of virtue, a virtuous state or condition, தருமம். 2. One of the eight kinds of marriage --as பிரமமணம். See மணம். அறநிலைப்பொருள், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the collection of revenues justly. 2. Wealth gotten by continuance in a proper course of duty and by industry. அறநிலையறம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the duty of a king to preserve his subjects from breaking the rules of the respective castes. அறநிலையின்பம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--pleasure from a virtuous course; marrying a virgin of proper age, caste and good manners (including conduct prescribed by the Shasters) and of good disposition. அறநெறி, s. The path of virtue. அறப்புறம், s. A place for the practice of virtuous actions. (See அறச்சாலை.) 2. A hall for learning or reciting the Vedas. அறவர்--அறவோர், s. The virtuous, those celebrated for charity and other good deeds, தருமநெறியோர். 2. Ascetics, துற வோர். 3. Brahmans, பார்ப்பார். 4. Sages, முனிவர். அறவன், s. Buddha, புத்தன். அறவாழி, s. The sea of virtue. அறவாழியந்தணன், s. Siva. 2. Vishnu. 3. Argha. அறவாழியந்தணன்றாள் சேர்ந்தார்க்கல்லாற் பிறவா ழிநீந்தலரிது. It is very difficult to swim and escape from the sea of vice, except for those who worship at the feet of him who is the sea of virtue. அறவாழிவேந்தன், s. God, கட வுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். அறவோன், s. aẕi (p. 32) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், அழிய, v. n. To decay, degenerate, perish, be corrupted, ruined, wasted, blighted, effaced, obliterated, abolished, demolished, annihilated, கெட. 2. To fail (as a promise), be frustrated as a hope, &c., be refuted, தவற. அழிகரு, s. Abortion, கருவழிவு. அழிகுட்டி, s. A miscarriage, an abortion applied chiefly to brutes--the casting of the young, வயிற்றில்மரித்தது. அழிந்தோரைநிறுத்தல், v. noun. One of the eight constituent parts of virtue, அறத்துறுப்பு. அழிபுண், s. A foul ulcer, ஆறாப் புண். (M. Dic.) அழிமதி, s. Waste, extravagance, malicious intention, கெடுபுத்தி. அழிமுதல், s. Waste of property, as of capital, principal, &c. முதலழிவு. அழிம்பு, s. [vul.] The nin-payment of a debt or the non-restoration of another's property from dishonest motives, புரட்டு. 2. Ruin, devastation, injury, damage, கேடு. என்னுடையமைக்கழிம்புபேசுகிறான். He talks of destroying my property. அழிம்புசெய்ய, inf. To damage a thing. 2. To debauch a woman. அழிம்பன், s. [vul.] A spendthrift, a profligate, ஊதாரி. 2. One who makes excuses for not paying debts, restoring property, &c., புரட்டன். அழியாதபத்தினி, s. A name of D'hurupary, the wife of the Pandu princes. அழியாமுதல், s. Property devoted or entailed in perpetuity to a temple or other charity, நிலையான ஆஸ்தி. 2. God, கடவுள். அழியாமை, neg. v. noun. Incorruption, immortality, imperishableness, கெடாமை. அழிவழக்கு, s. An unjust lawsuit, a groundless prosecution, a frivolous or groundless defence, a lost lawsuit, அநி யாயவழக்கு. கற்பழியாதபெண், s. A pure virgin. அழிகை, v. noun. Destruction, decay, ruin, சிதைவு. அழிவு, v. noun. Decay, injury, ruin, loss, desolation, the act of perishing. கேடு. 2. That which has perished of itself, கெட்டது. 3. Fault, immorality, (in a restricted sense,) deviation from rule, குற்றம். அன்றுகண்டமேனிக்கழிவில்லை. Just the same appearance as before. அழிவின்மை, neg. v. noun. Freedom from decay. அழிவுகாலம், s. The time of a universal deluge and destruction at the end of an age, யுகமுடிவு. கடையழிதல், v. noun. Suffering extremely. நிறையழிதல், v. noun. Being disheartened, dispirited, without hope. 7)

A contracted form of the negative gerund, எதிர்மறை வினையெச்சவிகுதி--as உண்ணா வந்தான்; for உண்ணாமல்வந்தான், he came, not having eaten. 12. A contracted form of the neg. rel. participle, எதிர்மறைப்பெயரெச்ச விகுதி--as ஓடாக்குதிரை, for ஓடாதகுதிரை, a horse that will not run. 13. A poetic form of the gerund, வினையெச்சவிகுதி--as பாராவணங்காமகிழ்ந்தான், he saw, worshipped and rejoiced;--பாராவணங்கா for பார்த்துவண ங்கி. 14. A neg. particle which may be expressed or understood before the termination of any verb except the neut. plural--as நடவாதான், he will not walk; நட வாய், you will not walk, &c. 15. A poetic contraction of ஆறு, way or manner--as, யான்வந்தவாசென்றியம்புதியேல், if you will go and give information of my arrival. 16. A poetic name of the ஆச்சாமரம். 17. One of the letters on which to exercise the voice in singing, running through the notes of the octave--a musical mode, இசையிலோசை. 18. A prefix to Sanscrit words--as, ஆகன் னம், ஆசட்சு. ஆ கெட்டேன். Ah! I am undone. ஆ கொடுப்பாய். Oh! thou wouldst give thyself--i. e. thyself and thy family--to Yama the god of death; [vul.] generally used by women. ஆதீண்டுகுற்றி--ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, s. A rubbing post or stone for cows, erected as a meritorious deed of charity. ஆப்பி--ஆமயம், s. Cow-dung, கோமயம். காட்டா, s. A wild cow. காரா, s. Buffalo, (lit.) a black cow or ox. 16)

ārūṭam (p. 41) s. Rising, the state of being risen or having ascended, ஏறுகை. Wils. p. 119. AROOD'HA. (p.) 2. The point in reference to the zodiac, where a person stands to consult the astrologer--or the sign designated by that, mentioned at the time--one of the three parts in divination made by astrologers. See கவிப்பு and உத யம். ஆரூடம்பார்க்க, inf. To foretell, to divine by the aspect of the planets and the signs of the zodiac, in reference to the place where the person stands; also by consulting the five kinds of birds, according to the rules of augury. ஆரூடன், s. One in a religion who has retired from the world, ஞானத் திற்றேறினவன். (p.) கருடாரூடன், s. Vishnu riding on a hawk. (p.) இரதாரூடன், s. One riding on a chariot. (p.) இடபாரூடன், s. āḷ (p. 43) --ஆளு, கிறேன், ஆண்டேன், வேன், ஆள, v. a. To rule, reign, exercise royal power, whether supreme or delegated, அரசுசெய்ய. 2. To possess and employ slaves, அடிமையாள. 3. To possess and enjoy the produce of land, the use of a house, &c., ஆட்சிசெய்ய. 4. To govern a wife, household, &c., குடும்பத்தையாள. 5. To accept, adopt--as a servant, slave, &c., receive into protection, ஆட்கொள்ள. 6. To use, establish usage--as in language, மொ ழியாட்சிசெய்ய. 7. To cherish, maintain, cultivate, exercise, ஓம்ப. 8. To manage, direct, கையாள. (c.)--Note. An appellative affix is formed from ஆள் by adding அன், for the singular, and அர் for the plural-as பகையாளன், a foe; பகையாளர், foes. ஆளமாட்டாதவனுக்குப்பெண்டேன்? What does he want with a wife, who cannot govern her? எடுத்தாளாதபொருளுதவாது. A thing not used becomes useless. என்னைமகிழ்வாலிசைந்தாளில். If thou receivest me with cheerfulness into thy protection. நட்பாள்பவர். Those sincerely united in friendship. யாமத்துமாளுந்தொழில். Employed even by night. (குறள்.) சான்றோராலாளப்பட்டசொல். A word used by the learned ancients. மன்னுயிரோம்பியருளாள்வார். They who cherish and exercise charity toward all living. அல்லலருளாள்வார்க்கில்லை. Evil cannot assail the charitable. ஆண்டவன்--ஆண்டான், appel. noun. A ruler, governor, lord, master, ஆள்வோன். ஆண்டி, s. [fem. ஆண்டிச்சி.] A religious mendicant of the Siva sect, a devotee, சிவனடியான். 2. A ruler, an appellative of the deity, transferred to the devotee. ஆண்டை, s. [fem. ஆண்டைச்சி.] A master, lord, landlord--as spoken by low castes, in reference to their feudal chief of superior caste, எசமானன். சத்தியமாய்்ச்சொல்லுகிறேனாண்டைகேளீர். My lord, listen to me; I will confess the truth. (ஞானவெட்.) ஆட்சி, v. noun. Possession, heritage, inheritance, title, உரிமை. 2. Government, domination, rule, reign, ஆளு கை. 3. Use, practice, occupancy, usage-especially in language by classical writers, வழக்கம். ஆட்சித்தானம்--ஆட்சிராசி, s. [in astrology.] One of the five situations in which a planet has government--that of its being in a sign deemed its own, during which it exerts special benignity --an occurrence favorable to the birth of a child, &c. ஆட்சிப்பட, inf. To become one's right by long possession, தற்கிழமை யாக. நெடுநாளாயவனுக்காட்சிப்பட்ட தெய்வம். A spirit or demon that has long been subject to him, or with which he has long been familiar. ஆட்சிப்படுத்த, inf. To secure a title by long possession, தற்கிழமையாக்க. ஆளுகை, v. noun. Rule, government, domination, authority. ஆளுகைசெய்ய, inf. To exercise government. ஆள்வாரில்லாமாடு, s. A cow or bull appropriated to a temple, which is left to stray as it likes; such are well received and fed. 59)
