amr (p. 19) --அமரு, கிறேன், அமர்ந் தேன், வேன், அமர, v. n. To be or become still, tranquil, settled, quiet, hushed, calm, serene; to become pacified, appeased, obedient, submissive, அமைய. 2. To rest, repose, enjoy repose, இளைப்பாற. 3. To settle, sink, be deposited as a sediment; to subside, become close and hard as sand by rain. அடங்க. 4. To agree, பொருந்த. 5. āḷ (p. 43) --ஆளு, கிறேன், ஆண்டேன், வேன், ஆள, v. a. To rule, reign, exercise royal power, whether supreme or delegated, அரசுசெய்ய. 2. To possess and employ slaves, அடிமையாள. 3. To possess and enjoy the produce of land, the use of a house, &c., ஆட்சிசெய்ய. 4. To govern a wife, household, &c., குடும்பத்தையாள. 5. To accept, adopt--as a servant, slave, &c., receive into protection, ஆட்கொள்ள. 6. To use, establish usage--as in language, மொ ழியாட்சிசெய்ய. 7. To cherish, maintain, cultivate, exercise, ஓம்ப. 8. To manage, direct, கையாள. (c.)--Note. An appellative affix is formed from ஆள் by adding அன், for the singular, and அர் for the plural-as பகையாளன், a foe; பகையாளர், foes. ஆளமாட்டாதவனுக்குப்பெண்டேன்? What does he want with a wife, who cannot govern her? எடுத்தாளாதபொருளுதவாது. A thing not used becomes useless. என்னைமகிழ்வாலிசைந்தாளில். If thou receivest me with cheerfulness into thy protection. நட்பாள்பவர். Those sincerely united in friendship. யாமத்துமாளுந்தொழில். Employed even by night. (குறள்.) சான்றோராலாளப்பட்டசொல். A word used by the learned ancients. மன்னுயிரோம்பியருளாள்வார். They who cherish and exercise charity toward all living. அல்லலருளாள்வார்க்கில்லை. Evil cannot assail the charitable. ஆண்டவன்--ஆண்டான், appel. noun. A ruler, governor, lord, master, ஆள்வோன். ஆண்டி, s. [fem. ஆண்டிச்சி.] A religious mendicant of the Siva sect, a devotee, சிவனடியான். 2. A ruler, an appellative of the deity, transferred to the devotee. ஆண்டை, s. [fem. ஆண்டைச்சி.] A master, lord, landlord--as spoken by low castes, in reference to their feudal chief of superior caste, எசமானன். சத்தியமாய்்ச்சொல்லுகிறேனாண்டைகேளீர். My lord, listen to me; I will confess the truth. (ஞானவெட்.) ஆட்சி, v. noun. Possession, heritage, inheritance, title, உரிமை. 2. Government, domination, rule, reign, ஆளு கை. 3. Use, practice, occupancy, usage-especially in language by classical writers, வழக்கம். ஆட்சித்தானம்--ஆட்சிராசி, s. [in astrology.] One of the five situations in which a planet has government--that of its being in a sign deemed its own, during which it exerts special benignity --an occurrence favorable to the birth of a child, &c. ஆட்சிப்பட, inf. To become one's right by long possession, தற்கிழமை யாக. நெடுநாளாயவனுக்காட்சிப்பட்ட தெய்வம். A spirit or demon that has long been subject to him, or with which he has long been familiar. ஆட்சிப்படுத்த, inf. To secure a title by long possession, தற்கிழமையாக்க. ஆளுகை, v. noun. Rule, government, domination, authority. ஆளுகைசெய்ய, inf. To exercise government. ஆள்வாரில்லாமாடு, s. A cow or bull appropriated to a temple, which is left to stray as it likes; such are well received and fed. 59)

kṉi (p. 102) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், ய, v. n. To ripen--as fruits, to grow ripe, to be ripe, mellow, luscious, sweet, பழுக்க. 2. To be over-ripe, நைய. 3. To be in flames, to glow, பழுக்கக்காய. 4. To grow tender, to melt, be soft--as the heart by affection, sexual love, devotion, &c., கரைய. 5. To be melted, to be in a state of fusion, உருக. 6. (p.) To be cheerful, be glad, மனங்க ளிக்க. 7. To be excessively enraged, கோபி க்க. 8. v. a. To bury, conceal, hide, புதைக்க. கிழங்குகனியவெந்தது. The yams are well boiled. கனிந்தசொல், s. Sweet words. கனிந்தபழம், s. Ripe fruit. கனிந்தபாடம், s. A well-learnt lesson, verse, &c., well committed to memory. கனியப்பண்ண, inf. To cause to grow tender--as fruits, or the heart. 2. To pacify, conciliate, win over. கனியப்பழுக்க, inf. To ripen to mellowness. கனியவெந்தஇரும்பு, s. Red-hot iron. கனியவைக்க, inf. To force the ripening of fruits. மனங்கனிய, inf. To melt--as the heart, with love, devotion, &c. அவன்மனதையொருபடிகனியப்பண்ணிப்போட் டாள். She has contrived to gain his affections. கனிதல், v. noun. Vehement anger, பெருங்கோபம். 2. Tenderness, இரங் கல். 3. The act of burying, புதைத்தல். 4. State of being over-ripe, நைதல். கனிவு, v. noun. Ripeness, maturity, mellowness, lusciousness in fruits, முதிர்வு. 2. Tenderness of mind, softness, melting of heart, இரங்குகை. 3. Connubial love, mutual affection, அன்பு. கனிவாயிருக்க, inf. To be in the enjoyment of mutual happiness, mirth, delight. 55)

kuḷir (p. 131) -- குளிரு, கிறது, ந்தது, குளிரும், குளிர, v. n. To be cold, chilly, frigid; to be cold to the touch; to be moist, damp, குளிர்கொள்ள. 2. To be cool, to be refreshed, குளிர்ச்சியுற. 3. To be refreshing, gratifying, pleasant, cheering to the touch, sight or hearing; to be engaging, attactive, benignant--as the countenance, இதமாக. 4. To be appeased, consoled, comforted, சாந்தமுற. 5. To die--spoken of death in time of epidemies, when fear of the avenging goddess prevents the use of the proper word, வசூரிமுதலியவியாதியால்மரிக்க. அப்பாவென்றால்உச்சிகுளிருமா. Will merely saying அப்பா afford relief? i. e. not mere words, but actions are necessary. அவன்ஒரு குளிர்ந்தகொள்ளி. He is a coldblodded persons; a man of a fair speech, but an enemy at heart. இப்பொழுதுஎனக்குமனங்குளிர்ந்தது. I am now refreshed, satisfied, gratified, appeased, &c. உச்சிகுளிர்ந்தது. The head has been cooled or refreshed--as on hearing joyful intelligence, &c. எனக்குக்குளிருகின்றது. I feel cold. என்வயிறுகுளிர்ந்ததுபோல உன்மாளிகையுங்குளிர வேண்டும். May you and your family be refreshed as I have been--an expression of thanks for favors received. சரீரமெல்லாங்குளிர்ந்தது. The whole body is refreshed. குளந்தைஅம்மைவார்த்துக்குளிர்ந்துபோயிற்று. The child has died of small-pox. குளிரப்பண்ண--குளிரவைக்க, inf. To cool wines, spirits, &c. 2. To refresh, to satisfy the appetite, the mind, &c.; to regale, to oblige, to appease. கண்குளிரப்பார்த்தான். He feasted his eyes with a gratifying sight. காதுகுளிரக்கேட்டேன். My ears were refreshed by hearing. நிலங்குளிரமழைபெய்தது. It rained abundantly so as to cool the earth. மனங்குளிரக்கொடுத்தேன். I gave him as much as he desired. குளிர்ந்தகிரணம், s. A gratifying light, lustre, &c.--as of the moon, a gem, &c. குளிர்ந்தகுரல், s. A pleasant voice in singing. குளிர்ந்தசரீரம், s. A cool temperament of body. குளிர்ந்தநிழல், s. Refreshing shade. குளிர்ந்தநிறம், s. A gay, cheerful, fine color. குளிர்ந்தநீர், s. cool water. 2. Cooled water after boiling, &c. 3. Good water in gems. குளிர்ந்தபார்வை, s. Engaging, attractive, benignant looks. குளிர்ந்தமுகம், s. Benignant expression of countenance. குளிர்ந்தபூமி, s. A cool climate. குளிர்ந்தபேச்சு--குளிர்ந்தவசனம்--கு ளிர்ந்தவார்த்தை, s. Pleasant, comforting, gratifying language. குளிர்ந்தவாசனை, s. Refreshing odors. குளிர்ந்தமனம், s. A calm, composed mind. 2. A benevolent mind. 3. A pleasant temper, an obliging disposition. குளிர்ந்தபரிமளம், s. A kind of native arsenic, சீதாங்கபாஷாணம். குளிர்ந்துகொல்லி, s. A cold blooded person. குளிர்ந்துகிடக்க--குளிர்ந்துபோக, inf. To become cold--as water after boiling. 2. To die--used auspiciously in time of epidemics. குளிர்ச்சி, v. noun. [imp. குளிர்த்தி. vul. குளுத்தி.] Coolness, refrigeration, சீதளம். 2. That which is refreshing, pleasant, gratifying, appeasing; cooling offerings, திருத்திசரம். கண்ணுக்குக்குளிர்ச்சி. Refreshing to the eyes. தெய்வத்துக்குக்குளிர்த்திசெய்தான். He gave cooling fruits to appease the goddess or demon. குளிர்ச்சிப்பண்டம்--குளிர்மைப்பண் டம், s. Any thing that is cooling, refrigerative. குளிர்ச்சியானசாப்பாடு--குளிர்மையான சாப்பாடு, s. Refreshing or cooling kinds of food. குளிர்ச்சியாயிருக்க, inf. To be cool, refreshing to the system. குளிர்ப்பிக்க--குளிர்விக்க, inf. v. a. To cool, to refrigerate; to refresh with water, perfumes, &c.; to gratify the mind, sight, &c., குளிரச்செய்ய. 8)

koṇṭāṭu (p. 146) கிறேன், கொண்டாடினே ன், வேன், கொண்டாட, v. n. To enjoy another's society, to take pleasure in one's company, கூடிவிளையாட. 2. To be free and social in dealings, &c., குலாவ. 3. You cannot confide in those who speak laughingly. சிரித்துக்கழுத்தறுக்குதல். Smiling on one and cutting his throat at the same time. i. e., injuring one under the disguise of friendship. தன்னைச்சிரிப்பாரைத் தானறியான். He knows not who laughs at him; he laughs at others not aware how much he is despised. (p.) சிரித்தமுகம், s. A smiling-face, a cheerful countenance. சிரித்துக்கொள்ள, inf. See சங்கட்டம். சீவசாட்சி--சீவசாட்சிசைதன்னியம், s. The intelligent soul, or universal intellect, according to the Vedantic system, as witness of all things, and identified with the Supreme Being, or Brahm. சீவசுவாசம், s. The breath of life. சீவசெந்து, s. Living beings. சீவதருமம்--சீவபுண்ணியம், s. Meritorious deeds of men to living creatures as distinguished from சிவதருமம் or சிவ புண்ணியம், divine benevolence. சீவதாதா, s. A patron, a generous, liberal person. (c.) சீவதாரு, s. See சீவவிருட்சம். சீவதாது, s. One of the three pulses supposed to be felt in the wrist, named after the three humors. See நாடி. சீவதிசை, s. Varieties of living beings. எறும்புகடையானை தலையெண்பத்து நான்குநூறாயி ரஞ்சீவபேதம். From the ant to the elephant, there are 8,4, species of living creatures. சீவநாசம், s. Something detrimental to life. சீவந்தன், s. [loc.] One who is alive. சீவரட்சை, s. Preservation of life--as by the divine being, or by a benevolent person in famine, &c. 2. Final salvation, liberation from births. சீவரத்தினம், s. A living gem worn by Vishnu on his breast. 2. The gem in the head of the fabulous five headed cobra, being essential to its life. 3. A fabulous gem in the world of Indra, and elsewhere, said to give whatever is asked. சீவராசிகள், s. See சீவகோடிகள். சீவவதை, s. Taking away one's life. சீவவிருட்சம், s. tāṉam (p. 236) s. (Sa. Da'na.) Gift in charity, donation, grant, contribution--commonly with a religious motive, as a work of merit; meritorious alms being bestowed on special occasions, as at the birth of a child, at a funeral, at the last moment of life, &c., கொடை. 2. Liberality, munificence, bounty, ஈகை. 3. Benefit, succor, உதவி. 4. The rut of the elephant, யானைமதம். 5. (Sa. Ta'na.) A tune, இராகம். --Note. தானம், for the souls of deceased ancestors is made to some of the பிதிர் class of gods, regarded as representatives of those progenitors; பிதிர் gifts are called தியாகம். தானம், 3. Three kinds of gifts. 1. தலைப்படுதானம், this is to give what one has honestly acquired to such as are free from the three great vices, lust, anger and scepticism, and who addict themselves with cheerful submission to a virtuous life; and when giving, praying that the gift may be received, அறத்தா லீட்டியபொருளைமுக்குற்றமற்ற நற்றவத்தோரைக்கொ ள்கெனப்பணிந்து, குறையிரந்து, தம்முள்ளமுவந்தீ தல். 2. இடைப்படுதானம், bestowing through pity, &c. (See இடை.) 3. கடைப்படுதானம், the last and lowest kind of charity, is, bestowing alms from love of popularity or praise, the fear of losing favor, or mere kindness of disposition, சுயநலத்தைப் பற்றியீவது. தானம், 1. Ten kinds of gifts. See தசதானம். பசுவையடித்துப்புலிக்குத்தானங்கொடுக்கிறதா.... Would one kill a cow and make a present of it to a tiger? நீற்றுப்பூசணிக்காய்த்தானம், s. The gift of an ash-colored pumpkin, instead of the life of a sick person required by the configuration of the planets; also called, மிருத்துதானம், கூஷ்மாண்டதானம், and கூஷ்மாண்டம். This kind of pumpkin is never cut, it being supposed to possess life; when used for food, it is always broken. தானங்கொடுக்க, inf. To give alms. 2. To make donation, contributions, presents, &c. 3. To make donations to a guru or brahman in the last extremity. See தாசதானம். தானங்கொடுத்தபசு, s. A cow given to a brahman or to a temple, just before death. தானசீலன், s. A liberal, charitable man. தானதருமம்--தானதன்மம், s. Alms and presents. தானபத்திரம்--தானபத்திரிகை, s. A deed of gift. தானாதிகருமங்கள், s.
