(a.) நேரசை, when there is a single syllable, ஓரலகு. 1. When there is a long vowel, as ஆ. 2. When the vowel is short, as ழி. 3. When the short vowel is joined with a mute, as வெள். 4. When the long vowel is joined with a mute, as வேல். (b.) நிரையசை, When there is a compound syllable, ஈரலகு. 1. When two short vowels are joined, as வெறி. 2. When a short and long vowel are joined, as சுறா. 3. When two short vowels are joined with a mute, as in நிறம். 4. When a short and long vowel are joined with a mute, as விளாம். அசைச்சீர், s. A foot of one syllable, as நாள் and மலர். அசைச்சொல்--அசைநிலை, s. An expletive, அசைநிலைச்சொல். அசைபோட--அசையிட--அசை வெட்ட, inf. To chew the cud, to ruminate. அசையடி, s. One of the members of கலிப்பா. கலிப்பாவினோருறுப்பு. அசையந்தாதி, s. A poem in which the last syllable of one verse and the first of the succeeding are the same. 2)

To press, squeeze, &c., as a boil, a ripe fruit, &c. with the fingers, compress as in the hand, or in a vessel, stuff in as cotton, &c. to a small space, press food, &c. to one side of the mouth, move it about in the mouth in tasting or chewing it, அமுக்க. 2. [prov.] Food eaten, sustenance, nutriment, &c. in the system, உண்டது. இரைக்க, inf. To eject food by a voluntary effort--as dogs, &c. இரைகழிய, inf. To evacuate indigested matter--as in cholera. இரைகொடுக்க, inf. To feed cattle, fowls, &c. (in a low sense), to support, maintain. இரைகொள்ளி, s. A gluttonous person, பெருந்தீனியாள். 2. The craw or crop of birds, இரைப்பெட்டி. இரைக்குக்கிடக்க, inf. To lie in wait for prey--as snakes. இரைக்குடர்--இரைக்குடல்--இ ரைப்பை, s. The stomach, ventricle, the maw. இரைசீரணிக்க, inf. To digest food. இரைதேட, inf. To gather food-as birds, to go in quest of prey, &c. இரைதேற, inf. To remain undigested or entire--as food in the stomach. இரைப்பற்று, s. [prov.] Indigested food lodged in the system, indigestion, செரியாதது. இரைப்பெட்டி, s. [prov.] Crop of birds, craw, maw, gizzard, பறவை யாதிகளிரைப்பை. இரைமீட்க, inf. To chew the cud --as cows, &c., அசைபோட. இரையூட்ட, inf. To feed their young ones--as birds. இரையெடுக்க, inf. To gather food --as birds, &c., pick up food, catch prey. 2. To chew the cud. 27)

The food of birds and beasts in general, பற வைவிலங்கிவற்றினுணவு. Four kinds of eating are enumerated, viz.: 1. உண்டல், eating without mastication--as boiled rice, &c. 2. தின்றல், masticating, chewing--as meat, curries, &c. 3. நக்கல், licking--as honey, molasses, lapping. 4. பருகல், drinking, sucking--as a child. Sometimes a fifth is added, viz.: மென்றல், chewing--as spices, pungents, leaves, &c. kept in the mouth. உண்டிசுருங்குதல்பெண்டிர்க்கழகு. It is becoming in a woman to eat little. பேருண்டி, s. [in discourse.] Powerless, vapid, uninteresting, not sound, profound, forcible or impressive, &c., உருசி யற்ற. சாரமற்றவன், s. One without knowledge, learning, strength, vigor, property, merit of austerities, &c. சாரஞ்சுட, inf. To burn the milkhedge, prickly pear shrub, &c., to get their ashes for making lye. சாரத்தண்ணீர், s. Lye, காரத்தண்ணீர். சாரந்தெளிக்க, inf. To sprinkle lye on clothes to whiten them. சாரத்தின்சத்துரு, s. An egg, from its neutralizing qualities, முட்டை. சாரக்கட்டை, s. A temporary wall, made use of in turning an arch. (R.) சாரத்துளை, s. Scaffold-holes in a building. சாரம்போட--சாரங்கட்ட, inf. To erect a scaffolding. (c.) சாரஸ்திரி, s. [Com. சோரஸ்திரி.] A vicious woman, an adulteress, விபசாரி. (p.) சாரத்துவம், s. Adultery, விபசாரம். சாரவறுதி--சாரவிறுதி, v. noun. [prov.] Lightness, slightness--as of a blow, a fall, &c.; [ex சாரம், strength, et அறுதி or இறுதி, wanting.] சாரவறுதியாய்ப்பட்டது. It hit him but slightly. சாரவாக்கியம், s. [in astron.] A table or any tabular number in it for counting the progress of the planets.--Note. The letters of the alphabet are substituted for numbers with a view to assist the memory and secure correctness in the tables. Compare சாவாக்கியம். நீதிசாரம், s. To daub with chunam. சுண்ணாம்புத்துடுப்பு, s. [prov.] A small spatula for taking chunam from the சுண்ணாம்புக்கரண்டகம். சுண்ணாம்புபூச, inf. To plaster with chunam. சுண்ணாம்புப்பதனி, s. Sweet toddy prepared with chunam. See பதநீர். சுண்ணாம்புப்பொருக்கு, s. Loose flakes, scales of chunam. சுண்ணாம்புப்பற்று, s. Adhesion of chunam to articles on which it has been rubbed. 2. Settling of lime at the bottom when put in toddy. சுண்ணாம்புப்பட்டை, s. Stripes of white wash with செம்மண்பட்டை on the walls of native houses, to avert the evil eye. சங்குச்சுண்ணாம்பு, s. Lime of conch shells. முத்துச்சுண்ணாம்பு, s. Lime of pearls-said to be luxury of kings with their betel-leaf. நத்தைச்சுண்ணாம்பு, s. Lime of snail shells. சிப்பிச்சுண்ணாம்பு, s. Lime of oyster shells. சீமைச்சுண்ணாம்பு, s. Chalk. குழைசுண்ணாம்பு, s. Macerated lime for plastering. கற்சுண்ணாம்பு--சுக்கான்சுண்ணாம்பு, s. Stone lime. கிளிஞ்சிற்சுண்ணாம்பு, s. Shell-lime. நீற்றினசுண்ணாம்பு, s. Slaked lime for whitewash. சுண்ணாம்புக்கீரை, s. A kind of greens. Achyranthes, L. 68)

curuḷ (p. 196) s. Roll, scroll, involution, coil, சுருட்டு. 2. A curl, ringlet, crisped leaf, tendril, &c., மயிர்ச்சுருள்முதலியன. 3. A roll of betel leaves for chewing, வெற்றிலைச்சுருள். (c.) 4. The involved folds of the young lotus, தாமரையுட்சுருள். 5. Female hair, பெண் மயிர். 6. Ladies' hair dressed or folded in a particular manner, ஐம்பாலினொன்று. சுருளில்வைத்தடக்கஞ்செய்திருக்கிறது. This is enclosed in an envelope. சுருள்கொடுக்க--சுருள்பிடிக்க, inf. To give betel to the bride and bridegroom before marriage. (c.) சுருள்பண்ண, inf. To roll up a palm leaf letter. சுருள்மடிக்க, inf. Device, contrivance, expedient, உபாயம். 4. [a contraction of சூட்சுமம்.] Minuteness, subtility, fineness, நுட்பம். 5. Comprehensiveness, conciseness, சுருக்கம். 6. Artful scheming, dishonest cunning, தந்திரம். (c.) 7. A clue to a subject; a rule in science, சூத்திரம். சூட்சத்திலேமோட்சமா. Is it easy to gain heaven? சுண்ணாம்பிலேயிருக்கிறதுசூட்சம். The principal virtue is in the chunam; (to make the mouth red in chewing betel.) சூட்சத்தில்முடித்துக்கொண்டுவாரும். Have the business done with little cost. சூட்சக்காரன், s. A skilful, ingenious person. 2. A cunning, artful person. சூட்சபுத்தி, s. Great ingenuity, superior invention, genius. சூட்சமாகப்பண்ண, inf. To act, skilfully, display ingenuity, perform extraordinary deeds, to subtilize. 2. To practise stratagems, உபாயம்பண்ண. சூட்சமானவேலை, s. Nice, ingenious, skilful workmanship. சூட்சம்பண்ண, inf. To manage economically. நீசெவலைச்சூட்சம்பண்ணவேண்டும். You must curtail your expenses. சூட்சவழி, s. A short, skilful method in art or science. 2. A good, moral system, நன்னெறி. 3. A short road, சுருக் கவழி. See சுளுவானவழி. சூட்சக்கயிறு, s. The concealed strings of a puppet. சூட்சத்தைத்தட்ட--சூட்சந்தட்ட, inf. To give a tap to the working machine. சூட்சமறிய, inf. To get a clue to a subject, &c. சூட்சமானசெலவு, s. Economical expense. (c.) சூட்சம்போட, inf. To make a contrivance for the equilibrium of a kite in the air. சூட்சம்வைக்க, inf. To make some contrivance in mechanical adjustments, &c. சூட்சமாய்ப்பிழைக்க, inf. To be frugal in domestic expenditure. 2. To live at small expense. (c.) சூட்சமாயிருக்க, inf. To be artful or cunning. 2. To be very little, கொஞ்ச மாயிருக்க. சூட்சவிலை, s. A low price. சூட்சாதிசூட்சம், s.
