aṟm (p. 33) --அறன், s. Moral or religious duty, virtue; the performance of good works according to the shasters--including justice, hospitality, liberality, &c., also what is prescribed as the duty to be practised by each particular caste. Compare தருமம். The thirty-two acts of charity are the following; viz.: 1. ஆதுலர்க்குச்சாலை, building houses for the poor. 2. ஓதுவார்க் குணவு, giving maintenance and education. 3. அறுசமயத்தார்க்குண்டி, feeding persons of either of the six religious sects. 4. பசுவுக்கு வாயுறை, feeding cows. 5. சிறைச்சோறு, feeding prisoners. 6. ஐயம், giving alms. 7. தின் பண்டநல்கல், providing for travellers. 8. அறவைச்சோறு, feeding the destitute. 9. மகப் பெறுவித்தல், rendering assistance in childbirth. 1. மகவுவளர்த்தல், nourishing children. 11. மகப்பால்வார்த்தல், giving milk to infants. 12. அறவைப்பிணஞ்சுடுதல், burning or burying the poor. 13. அறவைத்தூரியம், furnishing clothes to the destitute. 14. சுண்ணம், giving chunam to use with betel. 15. நோய்மருந்து, giving medicine to the sick. 16. வண்ணார், paying for washing the clothes of the poor. 17. நாவிதர், the same for shaving. 18. கண்ணாடி, giving a looking glass. 19. காதோலை, giving cadjan or palmyra leaves to women for their ears. 2. கண்மருந்து, giving black paint to women for the eyes. 21. தலைக்கெண்ணெய், giving oil for the head. 22. பெண்போகம், aid to enjoy a woman. 23. பிறர்துயர்காத்தல், redressing injuries. 24. தண்ணீர்ப்பந்தல், keeping water pandals to give drink to the thirsty. 25. மடம், erecting inns or buildings for the reception of Brahmans, pilgrims, &c. 26. தடம், making tanks. 27. சோலை, planting topes, groves, &c. 28. ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, erecting stakes at which cows may rub themselves. 29. விலங்கிற்குணவு, feeding all kinds of animals. 3. ஏறுவிடுதல், giving a bull for covering a cow. 31. விலைகொடுத்துயிர்காத்தல், giving money to save life. 32. கன்னிகாதானம், giving assistance towards marriage. (p.) அறஞ்செயவிரும்பு. Desire to do charity. அறக்காடு, s. A desert place for burning the dead, சுடுகாடு. அறக்கொடியோன், s. God; He whose banner is charity, கடவுள். அறங்கடை--அறன்கடை, s. Sin, what is opposed to virtue; nonconformity to the shasters, பாவம். அறங்கடையிற்செல்லார். They who will not enter in the way of vice. அறச்சாலை, s. An alms-house, a hall or room where the thirty-two acts of charity are practised. அறச்செல்வி--அறத்தின்மூர்த்தி, s. Parvati, பார்வதி, famous for alms-giving. 2. A name of தருமதேவதை. அறத்தின்மைந்தன்--அறன்மகன், s. The elder of the five Pandavas. அறத்துப்பால்--அறப்பால், s. A section of the book குறள், which treats of அறம். அறத்துறுப்பு, s. The attributes or constituent parts of charity or virtue, including dispositions and actions. Eight are given; viz.: 1. ஐயப்படாமை, being void of doubt or scepticism. 2. விருப் பின்மை, freedom from covetousness or of inordinate desire for any supposed good. 3. வெறுப்பின்மை, freedom from disgust. 4. மயக்கமின்மை, being void of perplexity. 5. பழியை நீக்கல், avoiding reproaches, being void of censoriousness. 6. அழிந்தோ ரைநிறுத்தல், relieving the distressed or ruined. 7. அறம்விளக்கல், bringing into light the nature of benefaction and expounding it. 8. பேரன்புடைமை, the possession of abundant love. அறத்தைக்காப்போன், s. The god ஐயன். அறநிலை, s. The practice of virtue, a virtuous state or condition, தருமம். 2. One of the eight kinds of marriage --as பிரமமணம். See மணம். அறநிலைப்பொருள், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the collection of revenues justly. 2. Wealth gotten by continuance in a proper course of duty and by industry. அறநிலையறம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the duty of a king to preserve his subjects from breaking the rules of the respective castes. அறநிலையின்பம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--pleasure from a virtuous course; marrying a virgin of proper age, caste and good manners (including conduct prescribed by the Shasters) and of good disposition. அறநெறி, s. The path of virtue. அறப்புறம், s. A place for the practice of virtuous actions. (See அறச்சாலை.) 2. A hall for learning or reciting the Vedas. அறவர்--அறவோர், s. The virtuous, those celebrated for charity and other good deeds, தருமநெறியோர். 2. Ascetics, துற வோர். 3. Brahmans, பார்ப்பார். 4. Sages, முனிவர். அறவன், s. Buddha, புத்தன். அறவாழி, s. The sea of virtue. அறவாழியந்தணன், s. Siva. 2. Vishnu. 3. Argha. அறவாழியந்தணன்றாள் சேர்ந்தார்க்கல்லாற் பிறவா ழிநீந்தலரிது. It is very difficult to swim and escape from the sea of vice, except for those who worship at the feet of him who is the sea of virtue. அறவாழிவேந்தன், s. God, கட வுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். அறவோன், s. To bind (charm) the mouth of a serpent, a dog, &c. 2. To charm a weapon to prevent its cutting, &c. 3. To settle an account. அலகுகழிக்க, inf. To subtract or deduct a number in reckoning with kernels, seeds, &c. அலகுகிட்டுகை, v. noun. Having the lock-jaw. அலகுகூடை, s. A basket made of twigs closely twisted together, used to draw water. அலகுநிலை, s. The result of a reckoning, as the sum in addition, product in multiplication, &c. அலகுநிறுத்தல், v. noun. Placing a sword upright. This is a ceremony performed in the pagoda of துரோபதை, before the festival in honor to her is commenced. A sword is set up--the point downwards-- on the side of a vessel filled with water, and if it does not move, they think that the ceremony will be attended with success. This is also done in private houses. அலகுபருப்பு, s. A kind of pea. அலகுபனை, s. The long, flat leaved palmyra, Borassus flabelliformis, L. அலகுபாக்கு, s. Betel-nut sliced thin and boiled in water in which its husk has been boiled, giving it a reddish hue. அலகுபோட, inf. To perform a penance, in which the tongue is pierced with an iron wire, strings are drawn through the sides of the loins, or the breast cut with a knife. (c.) அலகுப்பூட்டு, v. noun. Closing the mouth in penance. அலகுவிறைப்பு, v. noun. Becoming cold and stiff as the jaws in childbirth, fits, hunger, &c. வேப்பலகு, s. The rib or small stalk of the leaves of the margosa tree. திருவலகு, s. A broom used in pagodas. சோற்றலகு, s. A sort of rice strainer, made of ribs of palm leaves. 23)

kẕi (p. 98) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To reject, expel, cast off, discard, exclude, dislodge, remove, strip off, separate from, detach, climinate, அகற்ற. 2. To evacuate, void, discharge, emit, pass excrements, நீக்க. 3. To except, leave as refuse, abandon, ஒழிக்க. 4. [in arithmetic.] To subtract, subduct, கணக்குக்கழிக்க. 5. To deduct, abate, குறைக்க. 6. To purify from ceremonial uncleanness--as after childbirth, &c. வருந்திக்கழிக்க, inf. To pass time in suffering. மலங்கழிக்க, inf. To pass excrement. கண்டுகழிக்க, inf. To enjoy to satiety--as earthly good. 2. To be deprived of appetite by having much to do with food--as cooks, &c. சாந்திகழிக்க, inf. To remove the evil influence of planets by presenting offerings to them, &c. எச்சில்கழிக்க, inf. To purify a place where some one has taken food. கழித்தல், v. noun. The act of rejecting. கழிப்பு, v. noun. Expulsion, rejection, emission, கழிக்கை. 2. Offering to planets, demons, &c., to remove their malignity, சாந்திகழிக்கை. 3. Blemish, defect, fault, குற்றம். 4. That which is refused, rejected. 5. [in arithmetic.] Subtraction, கழிப்புக்கணக்கு. கழிப்புக்கழிக்க, inf. To expel malign influence by offerings. This is done by waving boiled rice, cakes, &c., over the head of the patients after which the materials used are thrown away. 70)

Cock of a gun, துப்பாக்கியினோருறுப்பு. 5. The prop of an embankment, நீரையடைக்குமரம். 6. A wooden frame, for casks, &c., குதிரைமரம். 7. The sparrow, ஊர்க்குருவி. 8. The mango tree, மாமரம், குதிரை is employed to denote a mango tree, because its synonym, கொக்கு is a synonym of மாமரம். This is sometimes allowed in poetry. மண்குதிரையைநம்பியாற்றில்இறங்கலாமா? Can one mount a clay-horse and descend into a river? குதிரைக்கடிவாளம்--குதிரைவாய்க்கருவி, s. A bit; a bridle for a horse. குதிரைக்கல்லணை--குதிரைச்சேணம், s. Saddle for a horse. குதிரைக்கழுத்துவட்டவார், s. Harness or trace for a horse. (Rott.) குதிரைக்கௌசனை--கவிசனை, s. A horsecloth or caparison. குதிரைச்சம்மட்டி--குதிரைச்சவுக்கு, s. The foam of a horse. குதிரைக்குளம்பு, s. A horse's hoof. 2. A kind of plant, நீர்க்குளிரி. (M. Dic.) குதிரைமட்டம், s. [vul.] A spirited kind of pony. குதிரைமறி, s. A filly, குதிரைக்குட்டி. 2. cūtakam (p. 200) s. Birth, delivery, பிறப்பு. 2. (c.) Uncleanness, ceremonial impurity of a woman from catamenia, மகளீர்தொடக்கு. W. p. 94. SOOTAKA. 3. Ceremonial impurity of a person from the death of a relative, rendering him incompetent to perform certain rites; that from the father's side being greater, the mother's less, மரணசூதகம். 4. Ceremonial uncleanness in general, as of a person, house, clothes, &c., from a death, from menstruation, childbirth, miscarriage, touching a corpse or carcass; from shaving; contact of the finger, &c., with the spittle or any part of the mouth; touching one of low caste, or bathing in a tank of his village; or weeping, lamenting, &c., for a deceased acquaintance, தீட்டு. 5. Oldness, antiquity, பழமை.--Note. According to some, the causes of ceremonial impurity are five, viz.: 1. சனனாசூசம், or சாதகாசூசம், childbirth. 2. மரணாசூசம், or மிருதாசூசம், death. 3. சண்டாளநீரிற்றோய்தல், bathing in the waters used by low castes. 4. சுராபானம்பண்ணல், drinking toddy or ardent spirits. 5. பொய்கூறல், lying. The last seems but little regarded, also the fourth by many. Instead of the last three, the following are named by some; இருது சூதகம், menstruation. உச்சிட்டசூதகம், being spitten upon. சண்டாளபரிசசூதகம், contact with one of low caste. சூதகக்காரன், s. One ceremonially impure. சூதகக்காரி--சூதகஸ்திரி, s. A woman ceremonially unclean, by catamenia, or otherwise. சூதகக்கிராணி, s. A disease attending the childbirth, from wind or flatulency. சூதகங்கழிக்க, inf. To remove impurity by the prescribed means. சூதகங்காக்க, inf. To keep from society, abstain from venery, from shaving. &c., after a death, till the performance of the funeral rites. சூதகசன்னி, s. A disease of females from sexual intercourse during menstruation. See சன்னி. சூதகத்துக்குடையவர்கள், appel. n. Heirs of one deceased. சூதகமலடு, s. One of the six forms of barrenness. See மலடு. சூதகமாக, inf. To have the monthly course as a woman. (c.) சூதகமுட்டு, s. Suppression of the menses. See கருப்பசூலை under கர்ப்பம். சூதகவாயு--சூசிகாவாயு, s. Hysterics, &c.--from irregularities of the monthly course, and other complaints connected with pregnancy. (c.) 5) *

pẕu (p. 302) க்கிறது, த்தது, க்கும், க்க, v. n. To ripen, to mature, to arrive at perfection, as fruits, grain &c., முதிர. 2. To suppurate, to ripen as a boil, பருக்கனிய. 3. To become grey or hoary, நரைக்க. 4. To change color by age, as ivory or horn; to become pale or yellowish, as the body by disease; to become soiled as the teeth by disease, நிறமாற. 5. To grow mature in knowledge, science, piety; to become fit for bliss, பக்குவமாக. 6. To take a fine blooming color, as gold, பொன்பழுக்க. 7. To become flabby and weak, as the abdomen of a woman after childbirth, through want of stimulants, &c., வயிறுபழுக்க. 8. (fig.) To obtain success, அனுகூலப்பட; also used in irony. அவனுக்குநரைத்துப்பழுத்தது. He is grown grey, from age. பழுக்கச்சுட, inf. To color gold on. the fire, by various ingredients, &c. See சுடு, v. பழுக்கப்போட, inf. To force the ripening of fruits by covering them with straw, &c. 2. To wait the maturity of some great event. பழுக்கவிட, inf. To let fruit ripen on the tree. பழுக்கவைக்க, inf. To put fruits to ripen. பழுத்தகதிர், s. A ripe ear or corn. பழுத்தபழம், s. A yellow ripe fruit, முதிர்ந்தகனி. 2. (fig.) An aged person, முதிர்கிழவன். 3. One mature for liberation from births, பக்குவன். 4. [prov.] One well learned in all kinds of wickedness, &c., மிகுவஞ்சகன்.--For the proverb, see கொம்பு. பழுத்துப்போக, inf. As பழு, v. பழுப்பு, v. noun. Ripeness Yellowness of fruits, change of color, blooming or natural color in gold, as the verb. பழுப்பரிசி, s. Rice turned yellow, or brown, by neglect in drying. பழுப்புப்பொன், s. Gold of a bright yellow hue. பழுப்பேற, inf. To be colored by the goldsmith's art. பழுப்படைய, inf. To contract a yellowish color, as grain.
