There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. It is a series of five kinds of verses; viz.: வெண்பா, கலித்துறை, அக வல், ஆசிரியவிருத்தம், சந்தவிருத்தம். (இவ்வகை யே மாறிமாறி நூறுசெய்யுள் அந்தாதித்துப்பாடுவது.) அலங்காரப்படுத்த, inf. To adorn, சிங்காரிக்க. அலங்காரப்பிரியன், s. Vishnu. அலங்காரப்பேச்சு, s. Fine, elegant language, flattery. 33) *

oḷi (p. 84) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To hide, conceal, put out of sight, secret, cloak, மறைக்க. 2. To keep a thing unrevealed, to disguise, conceal in the mind, மனதிலடக்க. 3. v. n. To hide, steal away, elope, flee into concealment, lurk unseen, desert, பதுங்கியிருக்க. காரியத்தைச்சொல்லாமலொளித்துப்போட்டான். . . . He has concealed the matter. 2. He has not told the secret. ஒளித்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To conceal one's self, to hide, மறைந்துகொள்ள. 2. To conceal a thing, மறைத்துக்கொள்ள. ஒளித்துத்திரிய, inf. To stray, wander in private, in a state of concealment. ஒளித்துவிளையாட, inf. To play at hide and seek, கண்பொத்திவிளையாட. மோதிரமொளித்துவிளையாடல். The game or play of hiding a ring. ஒளிப்பு, v. noun. Hiding, concealing, concealment, lurking, ஒளிக்கை. 2. Absconding, slinking or stealing away, escaping, desertion, பதுங்குகை. 3. Secret, covert, disguise, மறைவு. ஒளிப்புமறைப்புப்பண்ணாமற்சொல்லு. Tell all, conceal nothing. ஒளிப்பாகச்செய்ய, inf. To practise vice secretly--commonly in concert. ஒளிப்பிடம், s. A hiding place, an ambush, a covert, மறைவிடம். 16)

kr (p. 96) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To conceal, hide, cloak, cover, disguise, ஒளித்துவைக்க. 2. To steal, pilfer, plunder. திருட. 3. To be niggardly, to withhold, refuse to give, &c., கொடாதிருக்க. 4. v. n. To abscond, hide one's self, ஒளித்துக் கொள்ள. 5. To be unseen, be invisible, hidden--as a spirit, மறைய. (p.) கரவாதுவந்தீயுங்கண்ணன்னார். Those dear as one's eyes who never refuse to bestow their gifts-- (குறள்.) கரந்துறைகோள், s. Unseen planets. கரந்துறைச்செய்யுள், s. A poem so constructed as to conceal another poem within it, மிறைக்கவியிலொன்று. கரப்பு, v. noun. Stealing, pilfering. 2. Hiding, concealing. 3. Refusal, denial, withholding. கரவு, v. noun. Concealment, hiding, cloaking, sang froid, assumed or pretended ignorance, ஒளித்தல். 2. Stealing, theft, deception, subtlety, craft, insidiousness, களவு. கரவாகநிற்கிறான். He is insincere, hides something in his heart, is in alliance with the foe while pretending friendship. நெஞ்சிற்கரவுடையார்தம்மைக்கரப்பர். Those who are insincere will hide themselves. kẕuttu (p. 98) s. The neck of a person, brute, thing, &c., கண்டம். கழுத்தடி, s. The lower part of the nape of the neck, தோண்மேல். கழுத்தறுக்க, inf. To cut the throat, to server the wind-pipe. முன்விட்டுப்பின்னின்றுகழுத்தறுக்கலாமோ...... Would you bid one take precedence and then cut his throat? ஒருவன்கழுத்திலேகட்டிவிட. To devolve unpleasant consequences on another. 2. To attribute a crime or blame to a person. 3. To impose on another unsaleable goods, or a woman ineligible for marriage. கழுத்திடுகயிறு, s. Halter for a beast. கழுத்திருத்த, inf. To have the neck pressed down with a heavy load. (c.) கழுத்திலேகயிறுபோட, inf. To threaten self-immolation for the purpose of recovering debts, &c. 2. To be very treacherous, insidious, perfidious. (c.). கழுத்துக்குட்டை, s. A neckcloth, a cravat. (c.) கழுத்துக்கொடுக்க, inf. To lay down the neck for another on the block, to subject one's self to inconvenience or danger. 2. To expose one's life by a commission of crime. 3. To submit to the yoke as bullocks. கழுத்துச்சந்து, s. The joint of the neck. கழுத்துச்சுளுக்கு, s. Straining of the ligaments of the neck by violent turning of the head. கழுத்துத்திருக, inf. To wring off the head of a fowl, &c. 2. To throttle, twist the head. கழுத்துநெடியபானை, s. A longnecked pot. கழுத்துப்பட்டிகை, s. A collar, a cape. கழுத்துப்பட்டை, s. The collar of a cloak. கழுத்துப்பருத்திருக்க, inf. To have a thick neck. கழுத்துப்பொருத்தம், s. One of the ten பொருத்தம் for marriage, மணப்பொருத்தம் பத்திலோன்று. (c.) கழுத்துமுறிக்க--கழுத்தைமுறிக்க, inf. To break the neck--spoken of the power, &c., of demons. வேண்டாமென்றுகழுத்தைமுறிக்கிறான். He absolutely refuses, it is very repugnant to his feelings, &c. கழுத்துவெட்டி, s. A cut-throat, a betrayer, an assassin. (c.) கழுத்தூட்டி, s. The throat. (p.) கழுத்தேறுதண்டம், s. Aggravated or very heavy punishment. கழுத்தைநெரிக்க, inf. To throttle one. கட்டுக்கழுத்தி, s. A married woman. 81)

kuppāyam (p. 122) s. A cloak, a coat, a bodice; a jacket with short sleeves, worn next the body, especially by women; also a cuirass or quilted jacket, worn as armor, கவசம், Wils. p. 232, and 239. KURPPASA. குப்பாயசம், s. The body--as covered with a குப்பாயம் coat, சரீரம். (p.) 2) *

cṭṭai (p. 157) s. A made garment, jacket coat, gown, cloak, trousers, &c., தைத்தவுடை. 2. The skin or slough of a snake, பாம்புச் சட்டை. (c.) 3. (fig.) Bodily shape assumed by the soul, or by deity; [ex சடம், body.] See மானுடசட்டை. Compare அங்கி and மெய்ப்பை. 4. [vul.] Esteem, regard, honor, respect, கனம். 5. (R.) One in European dress, a Portugnese; a Eurasian. (c.) சட்டைச்சாக்கு, s. A pocket. (Modern.) சட்டைச்சாம்பு, s. [loc.] Cloth seventytwo cubits in the piece; long-cloth. (Limited usage.) சட்டைநாதன், s. [com. சட்டநாதன்.] A name of Siva--as Bhairava. சட்டைபண்ண, inf. To esteem, regard, honor. (c.) சட்டைமுனி, s. [com. சட்டமுனி]. A celebrated author of works on medicine, &c., regarded as a சித்தன். 71) *

Fordableness, ford, தாண்டுதுறை.-- The நிலை, (attitudes) in archery are; 1. பைசாசம், standing with one leg straight and the other bent, as devils are said to stand; 2. மண்டலம், standing with both knees bent out; 3. ஆலீடம், standing with the right knee bent out, and the left foot advanced; 4. பிரத்தியாலீடம், standing with the left knee bent and the right foot advanced. (சது.)--Note. Some authorities give a fifth posture, சமபாதம், standing with the feet even. நிலையுரியாய்ச்சீலையையுரிந்தான். He stripped or made himself naked. நிலையைவிட்டால்நீச்சு. If the fordable depth be left, one must swim--videlicet, give not up a certainty for an uncertainty. நிலைகலங்க, inf. To be disturbed, deranged, &c., in situation as a person or thing. நிலைகுலைக்க, inf. To ravish, &c. See குலை, v. a. நிலைகுலைய--நிலைகெட, inf. To lose one's situation, &c. See குலை, v. நிலைகேடு, s. Loss of a situation. நிலைகொள்ள, inf. To come into existence or operation. 2. To continue, to be permanent. நிலைக்கடகம், s. [prov.] A large, stationary basket, பெருங்கூடை. நிலைக்கண்ணாடி, s. To attain certainty, நிசப்பட. நிலைப்படுத்த, inf. To make permanent, lasting, durable. 2. To establish, settle, fix. 3. To make certain, நிசப்படுத்த. நிலைப்பரப்பு, s. [prov.] An extent or measure of land for grain. See நிலை. நிலைப்பாடு, s. Firmness, permanence, durability, உறுதிப்பாடு. நிலைமண், s. [prov.] Primitive, or native soil, as distinguished from கொட்டுமண், made ground. நிலைமண்டிலஆசிரியப்பா, s. One of the four species of ஆசிரியப்பா. See Beschi's Shen-Tamil Gram. p. 85. நிலைமண்டுதல், v. noun. Making a long stay in a place from home. 2. Sticking closely to a place, as a person, or animal. நிலைமாறுதல், v. noun. Changing place, principles or religion, being proselyted, இடமாறுதல். 2. [in gram.] Being changed in place--as letters, in words, as வைகாசி for வைசாகி, the latter being according to the original, சொல்லினெழுத்துமா றுதல். நிலைமொழி, s. [in gram.] The preceding or antecedent word, வருமொழிக்கு முதன்மொழி. நிலையகம், s. House, abode, வீடு. (p.) நிலையங்கி, s. A robe, a cloak. நிலையழிய, inf. To be unsettled as a kingdom, or ruined as a family, &c. 2. To depart from right principles, as நிலைதவற. 3. To be discomfited, தட்டழிய. நிலையழிவு, v. noun. Defeat, discomfiture, &c., as தட்டுக்கேடு. நிலையறிதல், v. noun. Knowing one's standing, rank, character or principles. நிலையாடி, appel. n. A weaver's swift. நெய்வார்கருவியுளொன்று. 2. Standing looking glass as நிலைக்கண்ணாடி. நிலையாகக்கேட்டல், v. noun. Hearing steadily, attentively, fixedly, உறுதிாயாய்க் கேட்டல். நிலையிடல், v. noun. Establishing, confirming, ஸ்தாபித்தல். நிலையியற்பொருள், s. A motionless inanimate thing. (p.) நிலையில்லாமை--நிலையின்மை, v. noun. (neg.) Transientness, transitoriness, அநித்தியம். 2. Fickleness, wavering, instability, உறுதியின்மை. நிலையில்லாதவன், appel. n. A changeable person, one who breaks his word. நிலையுடைக்கட்டை, s. A pivot. (R.) நிலையுடைமை, v. noun. Stability, firmness. (p.) நிலையுமல், s. [prov.] A large basket for grain, &c., kept stationary. நிலையுரல், s. A large mortar. நிலையூன்ற, inf. To take firm footing, become firmly settled in place, பலப் பட. 2. To become firmly rooted as a tree, வேரூன்ற. நிலைவரம், s. [improp. நிலைபரம். Tel. நிலவரமு.] State, condition, circumstances, நிலைமை. 2. Certainty, assurance, உண்மை. 3. Firmness, steadiness, sureness, உறுதி. நிலைவரப்பட்டவன், appel. n. A person who may be depended upon. நிலைவிளக்கு, s. Lamps placed in a square frame in a temple opposite the door; being stationary, not taken for other purposes. See சட்டவிளக்கு. ஒருநிலையாய்நிற்றல், v. noun. Continuing in a stationary posture. 2.
