iru (p. 50) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To sit, sit down, உட்கார. 2. To live, be alive, exist, உயிர்வாழ. 3. To abide, reside, dwell, sojourn or stay in an appropriate place--as men in houses--beasts in the forest--fishes in water, &c., தங்க. 4. To be, wait, remain, be present, be at hand, சமுகத்திலிருக்க. 5. To be in reserve, in store, to remain--as an overplus, மீந்திருக்க. 6. To be ready, prompt, waiting for any duty or project, to be on the point of acting, going, &c., ஆயத்தமாயிருக்க. 7. To settle in a place, become fixed, established, நிலைபெற. 8. To last, remain, continue, endure, நீடி க்க. (c.) With என்று prefixed, it expresses expectation, desire, &c.--as வருவானென்றி ருக்கிறோம். We expect him. In the past tense with the gerund of a verb it serves to express the plu-perfect tense of that verb--as வந்திருந்தான். He had come. The gerund is often used with the locative and expresses the idea of procession--as நகரத்திலிருந்துநீங்கினான். He departed from the city. Sometimes இருந்து is an expletive (அசைச்சொல்)--as எழுந்திருந்தான். He is risen. இரு இரு. Wait, wait. 2. Sit down. இருக்கச்சொல்லியும்போய்விட்டான். Although I told him to wait, he went away. இருக்கட்டும் இருக்கட்டும். Let it be (emphatically). இருக்கிறதவ்வளவுதான். That is all there is. இருந்தல்லவோபடுக்கவேண்டும். Is it not necessary to sit before lying down? a phrase used to express the necessity of caution or deliberation in any pursuit. இருந்தாற்போலே செத்துப்போனான். He died unexpectedly. இருந்திருந்துகாரியமிறுகிக்கொண்டது. The case has at length assumed a serious aspect. மீன்பிடிக்க இருக்கிறான். He is about to go afishing. அவனின்னமிருக்கிறானா? Is he still alive? Hindu caste in the time of Menu. according to the சூடாமணிநிகண்டு was as follows 1. பிராமணர், Brahmans, the sacerdotal caste--reputed to have sprung from the face of the god Brahma; 2. சத்திரியர் or க்ஷத்திரியர், the royal or military caste--said to have sprung from his shoulders; 3. வைசியர், Vaisya caste as sprung from his thighs. This class is threefold; (a) கோவைசியர், herdsmen. (b) தனவைசியர், the mercantile caste including செட்டிகள். (c.) பூவைசியர், the agriculturalists embracing வேளாளர். 4. சூத்தி ரர், Sudra caste, embracing artificers and other servile tribes, supposed to have sprung from Brahma's feet. Of these eighteen are named, but the number is much greater. See குடிமை.--Note. 2. All the Tamil authorities, except the Nighandu, make the கோவைசியர் and பூவைசியர் including the வேளாளர் as the fourth or சூத் திரர் caste, and all inferior to these as சங்கர சாதி or mixed caste.--Note. 3. Brahmans call the கோவைசியர் and the பூவைசியர், சற்சூத்தி ரர் or superior Sudras, and the சூத்திரர் they call தற்சூத்திரர் or real Sudras. எந்தச்சாதியாடுவேணும். A rogue, a cunning fellow. 2. An evader, a prevaricator. தட்டுத்தட்ட, inf. To give a tap. 2. To evade. 3. To thwart or frustrate. 4. To act dexterously. தட்டுத்தடவல், v. noun. As தட்டல்த டவல், which see. தட்டாயிருக்க, inf. To be destitute, to be in straits. செலவுக்குத்தட்டாயிருக்கிறது. We are in want of the means of subsistence. தட்டுக்கொட்டு, v. noun. [prov.] Exterior show without accomplishing one's wish. 2. A bauble, gew-gaw. 3. Living by stratagem, &c. தட்டுத்தடக்கு, v. noun. Hesitation, impediment. தட்டுத்தடக்கில்லாமல்வாசிக்கிறான். He reads fluently. தட்டுத்தாவரம், s. [prov.] Resort, resource, refuge, புகலிடம். தட்டுப்பட, inf. To be hit, to be struck--commonly accidentally. 2. To be tapped or beaten as a drum, cymbal, &c. 3. To lack, to be wanting--as stores, money, rain, &c. 4. To be felt by contact. 5. To be stopped in progress, as a vehicle, a performer, &c., To be understood. அவன் என்கண்ணுக்குத்தட்டுப்படவில்லை. I have not seen him any where. இப்போதுதான்எனக்குத்தட்டுப்பட்டது. Now I understand it. தட்டுண்டுபோக, inf. To be beaten off, scattered. 2. To be all threshed out--as rape-seed. 3. It has grown every day and every hour. நாள்வாய்பெறினும். Even in the early part of the day. (p.) இதுஅதுக்குநாளல்ல. This is not the proper time or season. நாடோறும், adv. [for நாள்தோறும்.] Daily. 2.
