akngkārm (p. 1) s. Pride, self-consequence, கருவம். 2. One of the four intellectual powers, the energy which excites to action, அந்தக்கரணங்களிலொன்று. (See இந்தி ரியம்.) 3. Self-consciousness, individuality, regarding one's self as performing actions instead of the deity as operating within, நானெனுஞ்செருக்கு. 4. (p.) An operating cause of transmigration, பிறவிக்குமூலம்; ex அகம் myself, et காரம் that which acts. அகங்காரகிரந்தி--அகங்காரக்கிரந்தி, s. The bond of the three evil principles, மும்மலம், which bind the soul from eternity, and subject it to births. (p.) அகங்காரத்திரயம், s. akppāṭṭuṟuppu (p. 2) s. The twelve members of அகப்பொருள் or அகத்திணை, viz. 1. இயல்பகத்திணை. Method of defining a thing or showing its nature, quality, &c. 2. வகையகத்திணை. Amplification, or detailing at large what has been said briefly. 3. பொதுவகத்திணை. The rule for summing up or recapitulating. 4. சிறப்பகத்திணை. The rule for discriminating, or explaining the difference of things. 5. உவமவகத்திணை. The rule for illustrating a subject by metaphors, comparisons, &c. 6. புறநிலையகத்திணை. The rule for exemplifying a subject by examples. 7. எதிர்நிலையகத்திணை. The rule for elucidating a circumstance by its opposite. 8. காரண or கருவியகத்திணை. Showing the condition or quality of a thing by its orginal cause. 9. காரியவகத்திணை. Proving a thing by its effects. 1. காரகவகத்திணை. There are five kinds of அடி as a metrical line. 1. குறளடி. 2. சிந்தடி. 3. அளவடி, or நேரடி. 4. நெடிலடி. 5. கழிநெடிலடி which see. அடிகொள்ள, inf. To begin, originate, be founded, தொடங்க. அடிகோல, inf. Head of the table or row of guests. அடிப்பலம், s. The first benefit or advantage received by a person, முதற்பலன். அடிப்பற்ற, inf. To be scorched-as rice by heat with want of water, &c., சுண்டுபற்ற, 2. To stick to the bottom of a vessel when boiling, அடியிலொட்ட. அடிப்பாடு, s. Path, way, beaten path, பாதை. 2. To deliberate, think how to act யோசிக்க. 2. To measure time by the shadow, நிழலளந்து பொ ழுதுகுறிக்க. அடிப்பினை, s. Sand mixt with lead, வங்கமணல். அடிப்போட, inf. To begin, undertake, make the first effort, effect an object, தொடங்க. அடிமடக்கு, s. [in prosody.] Repetition of a word or words with different meanings in the beginning of a line, or the repetition of a line in a verse with different meanings, சித்திரக்கவியி லொன்று, as, ஆகங்கண்டகராலற்றவாடவர், ஆகங் கண்டகராலற்றவன்பினர். அடிமடி, s. A secret place in the waistcloth, உள்மடி. அடிமடை, s. The commencement of a water channel, முதல்மடை. அடிமண், s. The earth adhering to one's feet, taken for enchantments against him (வசியம்) or for witchcraft, காலிலொட்டியமண். அடிமயக்கு, s. Transposing the lines of a verse without destroying the sense, அடிமாற்றுகை. 2. A verse so formed, ஓர்பா, as, அங்கண்மதியமரவின்வாய்ப்பட்டென்ப, பூசல்வாயாப்புலம்புமனைகலங்கி. அடிமறிமண்டிலவாசிரியப்பா, s. One of the four kinds of ஆசிரியம், the lines of which are interchangeable at pleasure, the meaning remaining the same, ஓர்வகையாசிரியப்பா. அடிமறிமாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், s. Construction in which the lines of a stanza are interchangeable, the harmony and meaning remaining the same, or the harmony only slightly affected. See பொருள்கோள், as, சுரையாழவம்மிமிதப்பவரையனை ய, யானைக்குநீத்துமுயற்குநிலையென்ப கானகநாடன் சுனை. அடிமுகனை, s. [vul.] Beginning-as of a story, &c. அடிமுடி, s. Order, regularity, வர லாறு. 2. From beginning to end, ஆதியந் தம். 3. Upside down, கீழ்மேல். 4. Head and foot, காலுந்தலையும். அடிமுரண்டொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which the first word of a line has a meaning opposite to that of the next, செய்யுட்டொடை யிலொன்று, as, இருள்பரந்தன்னமாநீர்மருங்கின், நிலவுகுவித்தன்னவெண்மணலொருசிறை, where darkness and moonlight are opposite. அடிமோனைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which each line begins with the same letter, ஓர் வகை மோனைத்தொடை. அடியடியாக, adv. [prov.] In succession, as the descent of title, &c., தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாக. அடியந்தாதி, s. A repetition in verse. See அந்தாதி. அடியளபெடை, s. Prolonging the sounds of long vowels at the beginning of every line, தொடைவிகற்பத்தொன்று. அடியறுக்கி, s. A flat piece of wood by which the potter marks his work and cuts it from the wheel below, மட்கலமறுக்குங்கருவி. அடியனாதி, s. Time immemorial, antiquity, தொன்றுதொட்டுள்ளகாலம். அடியார், s. [sing. அடியான்--அடி யாள்.] Slaves, servants as applied to devotees in reference to their deity, and used by persons of themselves in addressing superiors, to show respect, obedience or submission, தொண்டர். அடியிட, inf. To set on foot, commence an undertaking, a law suit, &c., தொடங்க. 2. To make a beginning in braiding--as the bottom of a basket, the first end of a mat, &c., பாய்முதலியவை முடைதற்கு அடியிட. அடியுரம், s. [prov.] Ancestral property, original stock. 2. Crop of a past year reserved for the sustenance of the following. 3. Manure put on the soil round a tree, &c., எரு. 4. Strength from food, power of wealth, &c.; ex உரம், strength. அடியெடுத்துவைக்க, inf. To begin to walk as children. அடியெதுகைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhymes in which the second letters of each line are of the same class, ஓரெதுகைத்தொடை. அடியேன், s. I your slave, your humble servant. அடியோடுகெட, inf. To be destroyed utterly, extirpated. அடியோட்டி, s. A triangular instrument with spikes, which, however placed, has one spike upward to pierce the feet of men or cattle; used in war, &c., a caltrop. அடிவயிறு, s. The lower part of the belly, the abdomen, கீழ்வயிறு. அடிவரலாறு, s. Source, principle, cause, காரணம். 2. Beginning, origin, bottom of a thing, தொடக்கம். 3. Ancient lines of ancestry, வமிசவரலாறு. அடிவரலாறாகத்தெரிதல். Understanding from the first. அடிவருட, inf. To chafe, stroke, or shampoo the legs of another. அடிவாரம், s. The foot of a hill, சாரல். அடிவானம், s. Horizon, திகாந்தம். அடிவிட--அடிவிரிய--அடிவிள்ள, inf. [prov.] To be cracked as the bottom of a chatty, &c. by use, அடியுடைய. அடிவைக்க, inf. A dog, நாய். அற்ப ஆசை கோடிதவத்தைக்கெடுக்கும். The coveting of a small thing destroys the penance of years. இதொரு அற்பகாரியம். This is a trifling thing. அற்பசங்கை--அற்பாசமனம், s. The act of making urine, modesté--in reference to those who wear the string. அற்பத்தனம், s. Vileness, meanness. அற்பபுத்தி, s. Low wit, folly, silliness. அற்பமாய், adv. Meanly, basely, vilely. அற்பன், s. (pl. அற்பர்.) An inferior, low-caste or ill-bred person, a mean person. அற்பனுக்குப்பவிஷுவந்தாலத்தராத்திரியிற்குடை பிடிப்பான். If a mean person has obtained wealth, he will carry an umbrella even at midnight. 67)

āl (p. 43) . The chief form of the third case, or instrumental ablative--implying cause, agency, instrumentality, expressing by, by means of, with, by way of, in consequence of, மூன்றாம்வேற்றுமையுருபு. 2. A poetic expletive, usually annexed to the finite verb, also to nouns, அசைச்சொல். 3. A form of the subjunctive, joined to the gerund, or in poetry, to the finite verb, expressing if, வினையெச்சவிகுதி. 4. An optative termination expressing may, let, &c., வியங்கோள் விகுதி. 5. A negative form of the optative--as அழால், don't weep. 6. A form of affirmation, for yes, ஆமெனல். This definition, though given in Saturagarady and Negundu, is not proved by examples. 7. A form of the third case, expressing each, every, distributively. (p.) நீவந்தால். If you come. நாடாமால். It is a country, or one's native land. ஊராலொருதேவகுலம். A temple in every country. மரீஇ யதோரால். May you know--or know --know you what has happened. வாளால்வெட்டினான். He cut with a sword. அரசனாலாகியமனை. A house built by the king. 6)

āḷ (p. 43) s. A person, grown man, ஆண் மகன். 2. A man of property, power, influence, consequence, &c., ஆடவன். 3. A servant, slave, அடிமை. 4. A laborer, messenger, கூலியாள். 5. A devotee, தொண்டன். 6. The common termination of the third person singular feminine, பெண்பாற்படர்க்கை யொருமைவிகுதி. ஆளானான். He has attained to manhood, has become a person of consequence. அவனதற்காளோ? Is he competent for that? மரங்களாளாய்ப்போயின. The trees have arrived at maturity. ஆட்காட்டி, s. The forefinger, சுட்டுவிரல். 2. A bird, the lapwing, which screeches on the approach of a person by night, ஓர்பறவை. ஆட்கூலி, s. The hire of a workman. ஆட்கொல்லி, s. A murderer, manslayer, homicide, assassin, கொலை காரன். 2. (fig.) Gold, money, பணம். ஆட்கொள்ள, inf. To employ as a servant, admit as a worshipper, devotee, &c.--used in reference to the deity, or a great person--implying grace or condescension in the receiver, and benefit to the person taken, அடிமைகொள்ள. ஆட்பட, inf. To become a servant, devotee, &c., commonly to a deity. 2. [prov.] To rise from obscurity, become a man of some property, or consequence. 3. To come to manhood. 4. To regain strength, &c., after sickness. அவனென்னாலேயாட்பட்டான். He became eminent by me. ஆட்படுத்த, inf. To adopt one as a devotee, servant, &c. 2. To raise a person from obscurity. 3. To rear, bring up a person from a child to a man, cherish, nourish. ஆட்பார்க்க, inf. To seek another. 2. To watch as a thief, guard himself against detection. 3. To look for persons for any bad purpose--as a prostitute, &c.--as Yama the god of death. ஆட்பார்த்துழலுமருளில்கூற்றுண்மையால். Since Yama the merciless god of death, who goes about looking for his victims, does actually exist. (நாலடி). ஆளரி, s. Vishnu in his incarnation as a lion. ஆளன்கீழப்பெண்சாதி, s. A wife. ஆளானவன், s. One who is arrived at the state of manhood. 2. One who is become eminent, or exalted over others. ஆளொட்டி--ஆளொதுங்கி, s. A hiding place, மறைவு. 2. A sentry-box, காவற்கூடு. ஆளோட்டி, s. A slave-driver, task-master, overseer of workmen, ஆளை வேலைகொள்வோன். ஆள்தேறுதல், v. noun. Recovering strength or stoutness. ஆள்த்திட்டம்--ஆட்டிட்டம், s. Depth, capacity of a person. 2. Marks for recognizing a person, recognizance. ஆள்வணங்கி, s. A tree, Ficus, L. ஆள்வினை, s. Energy, alacrity, diligence, application, exertion, perseverance, an enterprise, முயற்சி. 2. That which cannot be counted. எண்ணாதகண்டன்--எண்ணாதநெஞ் சன், s. A very bold man, destitute of fear; a rash, or heedless man. எண்ணாதவன், s. A reckless person, a desperate man. பாவபுண்ணியங்களையெண்ணாதவன். One who has no regard either for virtue or vice. எண்ணாமற்பேச, inf. To speak without due regard to rank, station, &c., மதியாமற்பேச. 2. One of the four kinds of அளவையாகுபெயர், according to which a number is put for the thing numbered--as காலாலேநடந்தான், he walked on one-fourth (of his length); i. e. his leg, which is so called because it bears that proportion to individual stature. எண்ணிக்கை, v. noun. Regard, esteem, honor, estimation, reverence, மதிப்பு. 2. Number, numbering, கணிப்பு. --Note. This word is irregular in its formation. எண்ணிக்கைக்குப்பிறந்தபிள்ளைகள். Children who seem born only to make up a number, being of no estimation. எண்ணிக்கைக்குள்ளடங்காதது. That which is innumerable. சேவகரையெண்ணிக்கைசெய்கிறது. To muster soldiers. எண்ணிக்கைகொடுக்க, inf. etir (p. 73) s. That which is opposite, in front, before, in presence of, over against, முன். 2. That which is opposed, is adverse, hostile, முரண். 3. Similitude, comparison, ஒப்பு. 4. Futurity, வருங்காலம். 5. Rivalry, competition, எதிரிடை. எதிரதுபோற்றல், v. noun. An author's adopting what is authorized by good usage though modern. See உத்தி. எதிரறை, s. Echoing, resounding. எதிர்கொள்ள--எதிர்கொண்டழைக் க, inf. To meet and receive a guest, a great person, a wedding party, &c., coming to one's house, சந்திக்க. எதிர்கோள், v. noun. Meeting in the way, meeting or receiving a person, எதிர்கொள்ளுகை. விருந்தெதிர்கோடல், v. noun. Inviting guests, or devotees, religious mendicants, &c.--one of the duties enjoined on a householder as the condition of his own participation of the good things of providence. See இல், house. (சிலப்பதிகாரம்.) எதிர்க்கடை, s. An opposition bazaar. கீரைக்கடைக்குமெதிர்க்கடைவேண்டும். An opposition stall is necessary even among green grocers. [prov.] எதிர்க்கட்சி, s. A slanting timber forming a continued line with the ridge and uniting in an angle formed by the slanting hip-rafters on either end of a hipped or bungalo roof. எதிர்ச்சாட்சி, s. Counter testimony; a witness brought to disprove previous testimony, மாறானசாட்சி. எதிர்ச்செட்டு, s. Competition in trade, ஒருவன்விற்பதற்குமாறாகவிற்கை. 2. [prov.] Trading at second hand, buying and selling again directly at a small profit. எதிர்நடை, s. The act of doing perversely. 2. Opposite course. எதிர்நடைக்கணக்கு, s. A register or account kept by each partner in a concern, that one may be examined by the other. எதிர்நிரைநிறை--எதிர்நிரனிறை, s. An arrangement of a series of verbs, &c. in the contrary order to that in which their nouns occur. See முறை நிரனிறை. எதிர்நிலை, s. Resistance, opposition, எதிர்நிற்கை. எதிர்நிலையகத்திணை, s. [in amatory verse.] The rule for elucidating a circumstance by the opposite case, contrast. எதிர்நிற்க, inf. To stand before one, முன்னிற்க. 2. To oppose, to be perverse, or contumacious, மாறுபட்டுநிற்க. 3. To stand against, withstand, cope with, போர்செய்ய. எதிர்நோக்குநட்சத்திரம், s. A nutchattra whose influence has respect to movements and interests in the different points of the compass, not an astrological, but a common phrase; the same as எதிர்நாள், or more properly, பக்கநாள். எதிர்பார்க்க, inf. To wait for an expected person, வரவுபார்த்திருக்க. 2. To expect, to look forward, காத்திருக்க. இருகாரியத்திற்கெதிர்பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது. To hope for a thing, to be in expectation of it. எதிர்போக, inf. To go against, oppose, meet as an army, assail, எதிராய் போக. எதிர்ப்பட, inf. To meet as in the way, சந்திக்க. 2. A contrary current; leaping in a contrary direction. எதிர்மறை, s. [in grammar.] The negative forms of expression, மறை--அ, அந், ந், கி, கு, வி, &c. are Sanscrit prefixes expressing negation. எதிர்மறைவினை, s. [in grammar.] The negative verb, மறைவினை. எதிர்முகம், s. eṉ (p. 75) கிறேன், றேன், பேன், என்ன, v. a. To say, name, pronounce, express, do, indicate, either by words or signs, expressed, or implied, என்றுசொல்ல. This is the common form for quotation, in which sense it generally occurs in all its various uses. In the infinitive and other parts it is commonly found with one ன் only. என்கு. I say. என்கும். We say. என்ப--என்பர்--என்மர்--என்மனார்--என்றிசினோ ர். They say, they may say, some say, &c. அப்படியென்கிறான். So he says. 2. He does so (the speaker making the sign or sound intended). இல்லையென்கிறேன். I say no-implying impatience, displeasure, emphasis, &c. பணமில்லையென்கிறான். He says he has no money. போவென்கிறேன். I tell you to go, lit. I say go, and implying I have said so before. அவனைப்போவென்னப்போகிறான். When I say go, he goes. காமதேனுவென்கிறபசு. The cow (of the supernals) called Kamadhanu. நானென்னுமெண்ணம். Self conceit, consequence. என்பவன், appel. n. He who says so. 2. He who is called so. பெரியானென்பவன். Perian, or he who is called Perian. ஆவென்ன, inf. To open the mouth, lit. to say ஆ. ஈயென்ன, inf. To show the teeth, lit. to say ஈ. என்பிக்க, inf. To cause another to say, to prove, சொல்லுவிக்க. அதையவன்வாயினாலேயுமக்கென்பிப்பேன். I will prove it to you from his mouth. என்று. The gerund of the verb என், used instead of என the infinitive (which is the poetic usage in this connexion), it serves to end a quotation and to connect it with the following part of the sentence, in which case it often corresponds to the conjunction that, வினையெச்சம். அவனையடித்தேனென்றுசொன்னான். He said that he struck him, lit. he said, I struck him. Note 1st. In connexion with appropriate verbs, என்று, and என often mean to expect, to think, imagine, to suppose, to pretend, to desire, எண்ணுதல் or some such verb being implied; பணந் தெய்வமென்றுநடக்கிறான், he makes money his god; அதுபுகையென்றிருந்தேன், I thought it was smoke, I took it for smoke; அவர்வருவாரென்றிருக்கிறேன், I expect him to come; அவன்சொன்னானென்றுவந்தாயா, have you came because he told you?--Note 2d. According to நன்னூல், என்று and என are இடைச்சொல் or particles, with several specific uses, the other parts of the verb are or may be included. 1. With பெயர் or names; அழுக்காறெனவொரு பாவி, the sinner called envy. (குறள்.) 2. With குறிப்பு or symbolic forms; சிக்கென வூன்றியவேர், the root which has taken firm hold; திடீரெனவந்தான், he came suddenly. 3. With இசை or (imitative) sounds; ஒல்லெனவொலித்தது, it sounded ஒல்; அடுக் கு or repititive symbolic terms are included in this class; படபடென்றுநடுங்கி னான், he trembled (shook, shivered, &c.) greatly; சுஃஃறென்னுந்தண்டோட்டுப்பெண் ணை, the palmyras whose green leaves rustled (emitted the sound of சுஃஃறு). 4. With எண் enumeration, in which they are equivalent to the copulative conjunction; சாத்தனெனக்கொற்றனெனப்பூதனெ னமூவரும்வந்தார், Sattan, Kottan and Bhuta came; தேனென்றுபாலென்றுவமையில்லாமொழி, words unequalled (in sweetness) by honey or milk. 5. With பண்பு or symbolic terms expressive of quality and intensity; சிவேரெனச்சிவந்தது, it reddened to a crimson; வெள்ளெனவா, come in the grey of the morning; வெள்ளெனவி ளர்த்தது, it became very white.--Note 3d. என்று and என also serve to express similitude, like, as, &c.; புலியெனப்பாய்ந் தான், he sprang like a tiger; காந்தளெனக் கைநீட்டி, extending her காந்தள்-like hand. --Note 4th. என and என்று are also used to express pre-eminence, &c.; இன்னதென் றில்லை, it is no matter which; ஆரென்றுநி னைத்தாய், who do you suppose I am? I am not to be treated thus, &c., உயிரென் றுபார்க்கவில்லை, he does not (or did not) regard even life; அவனுக்கின்னாரென்றில்லை, it is no matter to him who; குருவென் றுபேணுகின்றிலன், he does not respect even the guru; எவ்வளவென்றில்லை, it is no matter how much. 2. How much soever, how little soever. 3. It is illimitable, undefined, the quantity is unknown; வாய்வயிறென்றுபார்க்கிறதில்லை, he does not give himself time to eat.--Note 5th. என and என்று are also used with reiterative symbolic terms; மடம்டென்றொலித்த து, it sounded மட, மட; அடியடியென்றடித் தான், he beat him soundly; தலைதலையென்ற டித்துக்கொண்டான், he beat his head greatly through rage, grief, despair, &c.; lit. saying, 'Head, head;' வாய்வாயென்றடிக்க, to beat one's mouth greatly--in sorrow, despair, &c.; எறியெறியென்றெறிந்தான், he threw many times; lit. he threw, saying, 'Throw, throw.'--Note 6th. என and என்று, with a dative imply, designed or appointed for, sacred or devoted to, for the sake of, &c.; சுவாமிக்கென்றுநேர்ந் தது, it is vowed (devoted) to God; தன்பிள்ளைக்கென்றுவைத்துக்கொண்டான், he kept it for his child; எனக்கென்றெடுக்கமாட் டேன், I will not take it for myself-Note 7th. The subjunctive என்றால் joined to verbs or used when verbs are implied forms the subjunctive of those verbs.--Note 8th. The subjunctive என் னில், poetically, என்னின், if, is contracted into எனில் and எனின், and in classical usage to எல் and என்: உம் joined to those forms makes them though; they are added to other verbs or to nouns; ஓரடி யென்கிலும்நட, walk, if it be but one step. 40)

eytu (p. 73) கிறேன், எய்தினேன், வேன், எய்த, v. a. To approach, come upon, அணுக. 2. To obtain, acquire, attain, பெற் றுக்கொள்ள. 3. To experience, enjoy, or suffer, பயனனுபவிக்க. 4. v. n. To arrive at, come, சேர. 5. To happen, occur, சம்பவிக்க. (p.) மெய்ஞ்ஞானநெறியெய்துகிறது. To obtain true wisdom. என்பாவத்திற்குப்பயனென்னையெய்திற்று. eḷ (p. 75) s. [vul. எள்ளு.] One of the nine kinds of grain, sesamum, from the seeds of which an oil is extracted, used for food, bathing, &c., திலம். Sesamum orientale. See தானியம் and எண்ணெய்.-Note. The ள் of this word becomes ட் and ண் by permutation. எள்ளத்தனையைமலையத்தனையாக்க. To make a mountain of a sesamum seed, to exaggerate. எள்ளளவு--எள்ளுப்போலே. As much as a sesamum seed, a very little. எள்ளளவுநம்பிக்கையுமில்லை. Utterly unworthy of confidence. 2. Destitute of belief, confidence, &c. எள்ளுக்குளெண்ணெய்போலெங்குநிறைந்தகடவுள். God who pervades the universe, as oil the sesamum seed. எட்கடை--எட்கிடை--எட்பிரமா ணம். As much as a sesamum seed, எள்ள ளவு. 2. A standard of measure in regard to space, ஓரளவு--eight எள் make a நெல் or grain or rice; eight grains of rice one அங்குலம், an inch, &c. எட்பாகு, s. A kind of porridge made of sesamum seed, எள்ளுப்பாகு. எண்ணெய், s. [impr. எண்ணை.] Rape-seed oil. 2. (fig.) A common name for oils of all kinds. எண்ணெயூற்ற, inf. To express oil, எண்ணெய்வடிக்க. எண்ணெயெரிக்க, inf. To prepare medicinal oils by burning, in which the drugs are rolled up in a bit of cloth which is dipped in oil and set on fire; the oil which drops from it is used as a medicine, தைலமெரிக்க. எண்ணெய்க்கறுப்பு, s. The color of rape-seed oil, or dark brown. எண்ணெய்க்கறுப்பி, s. A female whose skin resembles rape-seed oil, not so much in regard to its color as its soft and beautiful appearance. எண்ணெய்க்காப்பு, s. Oil for bathing an idol, எண்ணெயபிஷேகம். எண்ணெய்க்காரன், s. An oilmonger, எண்ணெய்விற்போன். எண்ணெய்ச்சாணை, s. A hone prepared for use by oiling. எண்ணெய்ச்சாயம், s. Oil paint, எண்ணெயாற்செய்யப்பட்டசாயம். 2. Dyeing a cloth red after soaking it in margosa oil, எண்ணெயிற்றோய்த்தேற்றப்பட்டசாயம். எண்ணெய்ச்சிக்கு, s. Indigestion produced by eating oily food, எண்ணெய் வயிற்றிற்றங்குகை. 2. A clotted state of the hair from the oil not being well washed out, எண்ணெய்மயிரில்விடாமை. 3. A bad smell--as of oil, எண்ணெய்நாற்றம். எண்ணெய்ச்சீலை, s. Cloth dipped in oil to be applied to wounds, எண் ணெய்த்துணி. 2. A piece of cloth put round the waist before bathing, எண் ணெய்க்கோவணம். எண்ணெய்தேய்க்க, inf. To rub oil. எண்ணெய்தொட்டுப்பொட்டுவைக் க. inf. To dip the finger in oil before bathing dropping seven drops on the floor for the சிரஞ்சிவியர், who are supposed in consequence to grant long life. எண்ணெய்பிறக்க, inf. To form as oil by boiling. எண்ணெய்பூச, inf. To oil, anoint, besmear with oil. எண்ணெய்பொருத்த, inf. To put medical oil on the head or other parts of the body, and to rub it in, மருந்தெண் ணெய்பூச. எண்ணெய்ப்பற்று, s. Adherence of oil or unctuous matter to the bowels, hair, clothes, &c., oil, greasy substance in food--as in fish or on the dress from cooking, எண்ணெய்ச்சிக்கு. எண்ணெய்வழுக்கு, v. noun. Being greasy--as oil, &c., எண்ணெய்ச்சிக்கு. 2. Shining, sleek, glossy, bright, எண்ணெய் மினுக்கு. எண்ணெய்வாணிகன், s. An oilmonger, எண்ணெய்விற்போன். ஆமணக்கெண்ணெய், s. Castor oil. தலைக்கெண்ணெய், s. Oil for the head. விளக்கெண்ணெய், s. Lamp oil. புன்கெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from புன்கம் seeds. சூட்டெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from the residuum of the margosa berry. மருத்தெண்ணெய், s. Medical oil. குருந்தெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from குருந்தம் seeds. இலுப்பெண்ணெய், s. The இலுப் பை oil. வேப்பெண்ணெய், s. Margosa oil. தேங்காயெண்ணெய், s. Cocoanut oil. வடியெண்ணெய், s. Clarified medical oil. கொதியெண்ணெய், s. A species of boiled oil, used for medicinal purposes. புளியெண்ணெய், s. A medical oil. புன்னையெண்ணெய், s. The oil extracted from புன்னை seeds. நல்லெண்ணெய், s. Sesamum oil used for the hair and the skin, &c. மரவெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from wood. தெளிவெண்ணெய், s. Clear margosa oil poured off from the sediment. ஊற்றெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted by pressing or pounding the seeds. மீனெண்ணெய், s. Fish oil. எள்ளுண்டை--எள்ளுருண்டை, s. A pastry made into balls, said to be a very strengthening food, ஓர்சிற்றுண்டி. எள்ளுந்தண்ணீருமிறைக்க, inf. To pour water to the manes of deceased persons on sesamum seeds and sacrificial grass held in the hand. எள்ளோரை, s. Sesamum and rice boiled and mixed with ghee--one of the சித்திரான்னம். காட்டெள்ளு, s. A kind of sesamum found in uncultivated places. காரெள்ளு, s. The common எள். 2. A distinct species of எள். பேரெள்ளு, s. A large kind of sesamum. கடலெள்ளு, s. A species of sesamum. வெள்ளெள்ளு, s. A species of sesamum bearing white seed. சிற்றெள்ளு, s. eẕu (p. 75) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், எழ, v. n. To rise, ascend, get up, rise by one's own power, to rise as a thing by its own levity, rise as a heavenly body, a bird, a kite, &c., to soar, &c., எழும்ப. 2. To stir, be excited, roused, &c., மனங்கிளர. 3. To become resuscitated, rise to life, உயிரடைந்தெழும்ப. 4. To rise to eminence, தலைமைப்பட. 5. To rise and spread as a rumor, பரம்ப. 6. To rise as wind, clouds, &c., கிளம்ப. 7. To rise as a sound, singing, talking, clamor, &c., ஆரவாரமெழ. 8. To rise as a tree, grow larger, swell, to expand as breasts, increase in stature, rise as a building, shoot, sprout, spring up, உயர. 9. To happen, occur, arise, come on, சம்பவிக்க. 1. To become instrumental to, ஏதுவாக. 11. To remove from a dwelling, lodging, village, &c., குடியெழும்ப. 12. To rise in price, விலையேற. அவனுக்குக்கையெழவில்லை. His hand does not open to give any thing. அதைச்செய்யவெனக்குக்கைகாலெழவில்லை. My hands and feet would not stir (rise) to do such a thing. அதைச்சொல்லநாவெழாது. My tongue will not stir (rise) to speak so. கூரேயிறெழாதகுழவி. A babe that has not yet teethed. எழுஞாயிறு, s. The rising sun, உதயாதித்தன். 2. Quinsy, a mortal disease which begins with the rising sun; when it begins in the night it is termed படுஞாயிறு. (Mat. Ind. Opp.) எழுந்தபடி--எழுந்தமானம், s. At random, in an unpremeditated manner, carelessly, மனதிலேதோன்றியபடி. எழுந்தருள, inf. To rise, become present or manifest as the divinity in an idol on consecration; to be present as a great personage, &c., தோன்ற. 2. To repair to a place--as a sage, holy person, a king, &c., பெரியோர்வர. எழுந்தருளுநாயகர்--எழுந்தருளும் விக்கிரகம், s. The secondary idol in a temple, உச்சவவிக்கிரகம், representing the same deity as the first, carried about in processions while the other remains stationary--opp. to the மூலவிக்கிரகம். எழுந்தருள்படி, s. A procession of heathen gods. எழுந்திருக்க, inf. To rise, ascend, get up, &c., எழ, spoken chiefly of men. --Note. This is more full and expressive than எழ, alone. எழுந்துபோக, inf.
