(also சொட்டை.) Defect, blemish, stigma, &c., குற்றம். (c.) கள்ளிச்சொட்டுப்போலே. Milk as thick as that of the prickly pear. சொட்டுச்சொட்டாயிறங்க. To fall in drops. என்வேலைக்கொருசொட்டா. Can you point out a defect in my work? சொட்டுவைக்க, inf. To give a tap on one's head. சொட்டுப்போட, inf. To give a slap. 2. To disparage one's character. வட்டுவத்தின்மேல்சொட்டுப்போட்டால்வட்டுவ த்திற்குமாத்திரமாபடும். Will the slap on the betel-pouch affect that only, or also what it contains; i. e. if one member of a family suffers, will not others be affected? சொட்டுச்சொட்டென்றொழுக, inf. To drizzle, fall in drops. சொட்டுத்தண்டம், s. [prov.] A contribution made unwillingly, through the influence of others. சொட்டுச்சொல்--சொட்டைச்சொல், s. A jest. 2. A stigma. சொட்டுப்பால், s. tṇṭu (p. 223) கிறேன், தண்டினேன், வேன், தண்ட, v. a. To collect, to exact, to gather; to recover debts, rents, taxes, dues, contributions in money, grain, jewels, &c., வரிமுத லியதண்ட. (c.) 2. v. n. To part with to leave, to remove, to separate from, பிரிய. (p.) 3. (a change of தட்டு, soft for the hard.) To touch, commonly in the negative--as நாக்கிலேதண்டாமல், பட. (c.) நாக்கிலேதண்டாமல்மருந்தைச்சாப்பிட்டான். He swallowed the medicine without its touching his tongue. தண்டாச்சிறப்பினள், s. trumm (p. 225) --தர்மம்--தன்மம், s. Justice, right, equity, law, நீதி. 2. Virtue, moral and religious merit according to the Shastras, ஒழுக்கம். 3. Charity, any charitable or meritorious act from which future good is expected --as alms-giving; building or endowing temples, contributing to the support of life, human or brute, or the maintenance of religion, or religious establishments. A charitable or virtuous disposition, motive, intention, object, &c. தருமசிவாசாரி, s. A name of the gurus of the mercantile caste. தருமசீலன், s. (fem. தருமசீலி.) A charitable person piously disposed. தருமசூட்சுமம், s. A nice and difficult point in pleading. தருமஞ்செய்ய, inf. To do charitable and virtuous acts. தருமதானம், s. Beneficence, charitable gifts. தருமதேவதை, s. The goddess of virtue born from the right breast of Brahma, அம்பாலிகை. 2. The vehicle of Siva in the form of a bull, நந்தி. 3. (fig.) A good woman, உத்தமி.--Note. The goddess is described as placing four feet on the earth in the golden age; three in the next, or silver age; two in the brazen; and only one in the iron age. தருமநடை, s. tāṉam (p. 236) s. (Sa. Da'na.) Gift in charity, donation, grant, contribution--commonly with a religious motive, as a work of merit; meritorious alms being bestowed on special occasions, as at the birth of a child, at a funeral, at the last moment of life, &c., கொடை. 2. Liberality, munificence, bounty, ஈகை. 3. Benefit, succor, உதவி. 4. The rut of the elephant, யானைமதம். 5. (Sa. Ta'na.) A tune, இராகம். --Note. தானம், for the souls of deceased ancestors is made to some of the பிதிர் class of gods, regarded as representatives of those progenitors; பிதிர் gifts are called தியாகம். தானம், 3. Three kinds of gifts. 1. தலைப்படுதானம், this is to give what one has honestly acquired to such as are free from the three great vices, lust, anger and scepticism, and who addict themselves with cheerful submission to a virtuous life; and when giving, praying that the gift may be received, அறத்தா லீட்டியபொருளைமுக்குற்றமற்ற நற்றவத்தோரைக்கொ ள்கெனப்பணிந்து, குறையிரந்து, தம்முள்ளமுவந்தீ தல். 2. இடைப்படுதானம், bestowing through pity, &c. (See இடை.) 3. கடைப்படுதானம், the last and lowest kind of charity, is, bestowing alms from love of popularity or praise, the fear of losing favor, or mere kindness of disposition, சுயநலத்தைப் பற்றியீவது. தானம், 1. Ten kinds of gifts. See தசதானம். பசுவையடித்துப்புலிக்குத்தானங்கொடுக்கிறதா.... Would one kill a cow and make a present of it to a tiger? நீற்றுப்பூசணிக்காய்த்தானம், s. The gift of an ash-colored pumpkin, instead of the life of a sick person required by the configuration of the planets; also called, மிருத்துதானம், கூஷ்மாண்டதானம், and கூஷ்மாண்டம். This kind of pumpkin is never cut, it being supposed to possess life; when used for food, it is always broken. தானங்கொடுக்க, inf. To give alms. 2. To make donation, contributions, presents, &c. 3.
