One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம், கலைஞானமறுபத் துநான்கினொன்று. Wils. p. 73. ALANKARA. There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. It is a series of five kinds of verses; viz.: வெண்பா, கலித்துறை, அக வல், ஆசிரியவிருத்தம், சந்தவிருத்தம். (இவ்வகை யே மாறிமாறி நூறுசெய்யுள் அந்தாதித்துப்பாடுவது.) அலங்காரப்படுத்த, inf. To adorn, சிங்காரிக்க. அலங்காரப்பிரியன், s. Vishnu. அலங்காரப்பேச்சு, s. Fine, elegant language, flattery. 33) *

um (p. 63) . A connective particle variously used, ஓரிடைச்சொல். 1. எதிர்மறையும்மை, the use of உம் with an affirmative, or negative expressing probability, possibility, &c., and implying the possibility, &c., of the contrary--as, சாத்தன்வருதற்குமுரியன், Sattan may perhaps come; அவன்வரவுங்கூடும், It is possible that he may come. 2. சிறப்பும்மை, the உம் of speciality, including உயர்வுசிறப் பும்மை, or superiority and இழிவுசிறப்பும்மை, or inferiority--as, ஞானிகளுமறியார்கள்சித்திரநதிமூல ம், Even the sages are unacquainted with the source of the சித்திரம் river; இவ்வூர்ப்பூனை யும்புலாறின்னாது, Even the cats of this place will not eat flesh (so sacred is it, so vile is the practice); பார்ப்பானுங்கள்ளுண்டான், Even a Brahman has been drinking toddy; இவனைநாயுந்தேடாது, Even a dog will not regard him. 3. ஐயவும்மை, the உம் in doubt, uncertainty, indecision, equivocal forms, probability, possibility--as, அவர்பத்தாயினுந் தருவார்பதினைந்தாயினுந்தருவார், Perhaps he may give ten or he may give fifteen; மழை பெய்தாலும்பெய்யும், It may perhaps rain; பத் தானுமெட்டானுங்கொடு, Give ten, or eight, ten would be preferred, but eight may do; வரினும்வருவான், It is probable that he may come. The உம் is often suppressed. 4. எச்சவும்மை, இறந்ததுதழீஇயவெச்சவும்மை, எதிரதுதழீ இயவெச்சவும்மை, the use of உம் implying another person, thing, or event, understood, and meaning likewise, too, even--as, அவனும் வந்தான், He also is come (implying that another is come or expected); நாம்பாடவும் வேண்டும், We must sing also (as well as dance, &c.); கேட்டும்படிக்கவேண்டும், By inquiry also we must learn (as well as by other means). 5. முற்றும்பை, indicating the whole of a number or series, universality, totality--as, ஒருவருக்குமையமில்லை, None can doubt; எங்குமில்லை, no where; இருகண்ணுஞ் சிவந்தன, both eyes reddened; எவ்விடமும், every where; இரண்டையுங்கொண்டுவா, Bring them both; எல்லாரும், எவரும், ஆரும்வந்தார், all, whoever, &c. came; மிகுந்தநாலுபணத்தை யுந்தா, Give me the remaining four fanams; மூவரும், all the three persons. 6. எண்ணும் மை, a numeral connective, corresponding with, and commonly repeated with each word of the series; நீயுமவனும்வந்தீர்கள், You and he came. The particle is sometimes joined to the last only--as, சாத்தன், கொற்றன், பூதனும் வந்தார்கள், Sattan, Kottan and Poodan came. Sometimes it is wholly omitted, and a pronoun including the series used instead--as, சாத்தன்கொற்றன்இவர்கள்வந்தார்கள். Sometimes the last noun in the series is used in the plural--as, சாத்தகோற்றவர்வந்தார்கள். 7. தெரிநிலையும்மை, the உம் of ascertainment, clear perception, or decision, used of three or more things concerning which doubt has been entertained, but which is now cleared up--as, ஆணுமன்றுபெண்ணுமன்று, It is neither male nor female (but in hermaphrodite); அவருண்பதுசோறுமல்ல, பணிகாரமுமல் ல, சாகமூலபலாதிகள், His food is neither rice nor cakes, but leaves, roots and fruits, &c. 8. ஆக்கவும்மை, உம் expressive of a change of state--as, பாலுமாயிற்று, This milk became medicine also; வலியனுமாயினான், He has become even a strong man. The above eight are given in நன்னூல். 9. உம் joined to an infinitive implies விரைவு, the immediate occurrence of the event--as, துரைகட்டளையிடவுங்காரியஞ்செய்துமுடிந்தது, As soon as the magistrate gave the order, the thing was done; அவர்சொல்லவுமுலகங்களுண் டாம், As soon as he speaks worlds appear. The உம் is often omitted, but then it is less expressive--as, நானிதைச்செய்யெனச்செய்கிறான், I say this and he does it. 1. உம் added to a verbal noun in poetry, sometimes gives it a gerund-like succession of the event--as, காண்டலுமிதுவேசொல்வான், Seeing him he spoke thus; வருதலுந்தழுவிக் கொண்டான், As soon as he came he embraced. 11. உம் is associated to the social ablative with the same meaning--as, கடுங்கணைதொடுத்தலோடும், As soon as the swift arrows were shot. 12. உம் added to the infinitive serves for optative, especially in epistolary usage but not in good style--as, தாங்கள்மறுமொழியனுப்பவும், May you please to send an answer; இப்படிச்செய்யவும், May you do so, I wish you to do so. 13. உம் added to the following forms of a verb, செய்து, செய்யின், செய்தால், has the force of though, although--as, அவனறிந்தும்வரவில்லை. Though he knew, he did not come; சொல்லி னும் or சொன்னாலும்அவன்கேளான், Though you may tell him he will not listen. 14. உம் added to இல் or இன் forms of the fifth case gives the force of the comparative degree --as, கந்தனினும்வலியனே, He is even stronger than Skanda. 15. A token of reproof, menace, anger, &c., also of attention, assent, doubt, non-compliance, &c., (see ஊம்)--as, உம்மெனத்தெழித்துரப்ப, He reproved his rashness by uttering the menacing sound உம் (ஸ்காந்தம்); கதைசொல்லுகி றேன்உம்கொட்டிக்கேள், I am going to tell you a story, show that you listen by saying உம்; உம்மெனுமார்பைத்தட்டும், The guilt of Brahmanicide manifested in a phantom threatened by saying உம் and striking on its breast (திருவிளையாடல்). 16. A termination of the imperative plural, முன்னிலைப்பன்மைவி குதி-- as, நீவிர்சொல்லும், say ye. It is often used honorifically in imperative singular --as, கடவுளேநீரிரங்கும், God be merciful. 17. A termination of verbs third pers. pres. or fut. tense sing. number, also of neut. plurals--as அவன்செய்யும், He does or will do it; சிங்கங்கள்முழங்கும், The lions roar, or will roar, செய்யுமென்முற்றுவிகுதி. 18. A modification of the pronoun நீர் when it is declined in the different cases--as, உம்மை, உம் மால், &c. 19. The termination of the future relative participle, எதிர்காலப்பெயரெச்ச விகுதி--as, உலகாளும்அரசர், Kings who govern the world. 2)

kiḷai (p. 112) s. Branching, ramification, branch, மரமுதலியவற்றின்கிளை. 2. A bough, a spring, a twig, a spray, a sprout, a shoot, a bud, தளிர். 3. Kindred relations, line, family branches சுற்றம். 4. A herd (of cattle). a flock, a horde, a shoal; a family, a race, a group, a class, a company, கூட்டம். 5. Bamboo, மூங்கில். 6. A mode of singing, ஓர்பண். 7. One of the musical tones modulated by the palate--the third in the gamut, கைக்கிளையென்னுமிசை. 8. One of the strings of the lute corresponding with the கைக்கிளை tone, யாழினோர்நரம்பு. கிளைகிளையாய், In herds, flocks or groups. கிளைகூட்ட, inf. To screech--as two or more ஆந்தை owls together. கிளைக்கதை, s. One story branching out of another, a ramifying narrative; an episode. கிளைவழி, s. Lineage, pedigree, உறவின் வழி. 2. A branching street, கொடிவழி. கிளைநறுக்க, inf. To prune, to lop. கிளைபுறப்பட, inf. To shoot forth--as a branch. கிளையோட--கிளைவிட inf. To put forth twigs, branches, &c. 2. To ramify, to branch out. நெடுங்கிளை, s. A straight branch. பக்கக்கிளை, s. A by-shoot. பொய்க்கிளை, s. [prov.] False sprouts for fruit in jack-trees. மெய்க்கிளை, s. [prov.] Sprouts of genuine fruits in jack-trees. கிளைஞர், s. (pl.) Relations, kindred, உற வோர். 2. Friends, companions, associates, தோழர். See under கிளை, v. a. கிளைபெருக்க, inf. To be numerous, to multiply, ramify, increase, &c.--as a family. கிளைமை, s. Relationship, உறவு. 2. Amity, friendship, சினேகம். கிளையார், s. Kindred, friends. கிளைப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] Names of a small class or division of men, or animals, as distinguished from குழூஉப் பெயர் and சாதிப்பெயர்--as in எயின், hunting class; தமர், one's family circle. 13)

kītam (p. 113) s. Song, singing, chant, hymn, sacred rehearsal in praise of a deity. இசை ப்பாட்டு. Wils. p. 29. GEETA. 2. A beetle, a bee, வண்டு. 3. Melody, music, இசை. ஒவ்வொருராகத்துக்குஒவ்வொருகீதமிருக்கிறது. To each tune there is a corresponding hymn or song. Each hymn or song has its proper tune. கீதசாத்திரம், s. Science of music--as சங்கீதசாத்திரம். கீதப்பாட்டு, s. A melodious song, a hymn. கீதம்பாட--கீதம்வாசிக்க, inf. To sing a hymn, a song, &c.; to chant. கீதவாத்தியம், s. Vocal and instrumental music, கீதமும்வாத்தியமும். கீதவேதம், s. The Sáma or third Véda, the prayers of which are composed in metre and always chanted, சாமவேதம். 18)

kaikkiḷai (p. 144) s. [in love poetry.] Sexual love before it is reciprocated. (See திணை.) 2. A poem, expressing voluptuous desires by either sex, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். (See பிரபந்தம்.) 3. One of the seven sounds in music--the palatal. அண்ணத்தாற்பிறக்குமொலி. 4. One of the strings of the lute corresponding to the same tone, யாழினோர்நரம்பு. 27)

kōṭu (p. 149) கிறேன், கோடினேன், கோட, v. a. (Sans. KÔT'A, crooked.) To be crooked, oblique; to bend, வளைய. 2. To swerve, to deviate, to diverge, கோண. 3. To be partial, biased, நடுவுநிலைகோண. 4. To be envious, displeaced, to take umbrage, to have antipathy, வெறுப்புற. 5. v. a. To break, to snap off, முறிக்க. (p.) கோடாதகோல், s. A right sceptre, just government. கோடாதமனம், s. Crookedness, bent, flexture, வளைவு. 2. Grudging, malice, envy, அழுக்காறு. 3. Partiality, swerving from rectitude, injustice, obliquity, கோ ணல். 4. [prov.] Lines, figures, diagrams made of rice-flour, &c., on the floor in religious ceremonies, மாக்கோலம்; (ex கோடு.) முகங்கோடுதல், v. noun. Making a wry face through discontent, dissatisfaction, umbrage, sorrow, &c. சொற்கோட்டமில்லதுசெப்பமொருதலையாவுட்கோ ட்டமின்மைபெறின். Freedom from obliquity of speech is rectitude, if there be a (corresponding) freedom from bias of mind. (குற.) முகக்கோட்டம், v. noun. A sad, dejected countenance. 2. A look of reluctance or unwillingness. 15)

One of the treatises on jurisprudence and ethics, தருமநூலி லொன்று. 4. The series of odd number of terms--as 1,2,3,4,5/1,3,5,7,9 &c. 8th. சமன்வியன்சங்கலிதம். The series of even number in an odd number of terms--as 1,2,3,4,5/2,4,6,8,1, 9th. சமன் சமன்சங்கலி தம். The series of even number in an even number of terms--as 1,2,3,4/2,4,6,8,1, &c. 1th. அதி சங்கலிதம். The geometrical series whose first term is 1 and whose ratio is 2.--as 1,2,4,8,16,32, &c. 11th. சங்கலிதசங்கலிதம். The series whose respective terms are the summation of the corresponding number of terms in the natural series--as 1 2 3 4/1,3,6,1, 5 6/15, 21, &c. 12th. இலாடசங்கலிதம். 13th. வர்க்க லாடசங்கலிதம். To pass freely--as the breath of a person when noticed to ascertain his fortune. சரம்பார்க்க, inf. To observe the free passage of the breath. சரங்கட்ட, inf. To make a wreath. சரந்தொடுக்க, inf. To shoot arrows. ஒருவன்மேற்சரந்தொடுத்தல். Shooting arrows at one, i. e. aspersing his character, casting dirt upon him. (c.) சரப்பணி, s. [com. சரப்பளி.] A gold chain for the neck. சரமணி, s. A waist-belt with tinkling bells, அரைப்பட்டிகை. சரமணிக்கோவை, s. The சரமணி belt. சரமாதம், s. [in astrol.] Any of the four months corresponding with its appropriate சரராசி. சரராசி, s. [in astrol.] Four signs of the zodiac auspicious to movements-such as setting out on a journey, &c.; the four being Aries, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. See இராசி. சரமாலை, s. A wreath of flowers tied or strung singly, பூமாலை. சரக்கொன்றை, s. A species of கொ ன்றை tree. See under கொன்றை. சரகூடம், s. A covering formed supernaturally by arrows shot into the air, as a means of defence from the weapons of the enemy, அப்பாற்சமைத்தகூ டம். (p.) சரமாரி--சரவருஷம், s. A shower of arrows. (c.) சராசரம், s. Existences moveable and immoveable, the aggregate of all things animate and inanimate; [ex அசரம், immoveable.] சராசனம், s. A bow, வில்; [ex சரம், arrow, et அசனம், throwing.] சராப்பியாசம், s. A sacred periodical festival, a temple procession, &c., உற்சவம். 9. Civilities to guests, etiquette, உபசாரம். 1, Abundance, plenty, copiousness, intensity, excess, மிகுதி. 11. Auspiciousness, propitiousness, prosperity, சுபம். 12. Classical beauty, புலமைச்சிறப்பு. ஊணுடையெச்சமுயிர்க்கெல்லாம் வேறலல நாணு டைமாந்தர்சிறப்பு. Food, dress, &c., are common to men, but modesty is peculiar to the good. (குற) சிறப்பகத்திணை, s. Reflection, discrimination, as a faculty of the mind distinct from perception by the senses; [ex அகத்திணை.] See திணை. சிறப்பிலாதாள், s. The goddess of illluck, மூதேவி; [ex இலாதாள்.] (நிக.) சிறப்புச்சூத்திரம், s. Special or particular rules in scientific, or literary works as distinguished from general rules. சிறப்புச்செய்ய--சிறப்புப்பண்ண, inf. To beautify, to adorn. 2. To show civilities, உபசரிக்க. 3. [prov.] To celebrate a temple festival. சிறப்புச்சொல், s. A specific word, not generic. சிறப்புப்பாயிரம், s. A special preface --distinguished from பொதுப்பாயிரம். சிறப்புப்பெயர், s. Particular, proper, specific or special names--opposed to பொதுப்பெயர். 2. Official or acquired names, titles of rank, &c.--Note. சிறப்புப் பெயர் is derived from eight sources as-திணை, a track--as குறவன், a mountainer. 2. நிலம், country--as சீனன், Chinese. 3. சாதி, caste--as அம்பட்டன், the barber. 4. குடி, family--as சேரன், the (royal) Seran. 5. உடைமை, possession--as உடையன், the possessor. 6. பொருள், property, as பொன் னன், the possessor of gold. 7. குணம், quality--as பெரியன், the great one. 8. கல்வி, learning--as ஆசிரியன், a teacher. சிறப்புவிதி, s. A specific rule. சிறப்பெடுக்க, inf. To solemnize a temple festival, திருவிழாக்கொண்டாட. (p.) சிறப்பெழுத்து, s. Letters in Tamil which have no corresponding letters in Sanscrit, viz.: எ, ஒ, ழ, ற, ன, ஃ, ஒற்றளபு, and some others. 2. Sanscrit letters that have none exactly corresponding with them in Tamil. 27)

civaṉ (p. 188) s. Siva, the third of the Indian Triad, in the character of destroyer, or reducer of things to their primitive atoms. By his votaries he is considered the supreme god. the other deities being subject to him, சங்கரன். சிவகணம், s. The attendant demi-gods of Siva, commonly in companies, சிவன் சேனை. சிவசமயம், s. The Siva religion. சிவசிந்தை, s. Divine contemplation, meditation on Siva--as சிவத்தியானம். சிவஞானசித்தியார்--சிவஞானசித்தி, s. A commentary on சிவஞானபோதம். See சித்தி யார். சிவஞானபோதம், s. A celebrated work consisting of twelve rules translated from the ரௌரவம், or the sixteenth Agama, being almost the only part of the Agamas known in Tamil. It is regarded as divine, without origin, and as not to be read unless the person has attained a competent degree in the religion. Other works--as சித்தியார், சிவப்பி ரகாசம், தத்துவப்பிரகாசம், &c., are commentaries on this or other treatises in support of its doctrines, ஓராகமநூல். சிவஸ்தலம்--சிவஸ்தானம்--சிவதலம், s. Temples, places, &c., sacred to Siva; Saiva temples. சிவதத்துவம், s. Degrees of religious power or attainment derived from Siva, of which five are specified--as 1. சத் தவித்தை. 2. ஈச்சுரம். 3. சாதாக்கியம். 4. சத்தி. 5. சிவம், which see severally. சிவதரிசனம், s. Sight or knowledge of Siva. 2. Pilgrimage to holy places of Siva. 3. A treatise containing a representation of the deity according to the Agamas, ஓர்நூல். சிவதர்மம்--சிவதன்மம், s. Meritorious or virtuous works performed in reference to Siva, as distinguished from actions of benevolence to creatures, பதி தர்மம். 2. One of the eighteen secondary Puranas, ஒருபுராணம். சிவதர்மோத்தரம்--சிவதன்மோத்தரம், s. The Uttera Candum (உத்தரகாண்டம்.) or the last part of the சிவதன்மபுராணம். சிவதீட்சை, s. The initiatory ceremony on entering the Saiva sect. சிவதீர்த்தம், s. A sacred tank within the precincts of the great temple at Ramisseram. சிவதொண்டு, s. Service of Siva. சிவதொண்டர், s. Devotees or votaries of Siva. சிவத்தாபனம்--சிவஸ்தாபனம், s. An edifice sacred to Siva, a large shrine. சிவத்தியானம், s. Contemplation of Siva in silent devotion, an image being formed in the mind as an object of worship. சிவத்துரோகம், s. Sin against Siva; a profanation of sacred things. சிவநிந்தை, s. Blasphemy or contempt of Siva. சிவபஜனை, s. Praising Siva by lyrics. சிவபத்தர்--சிவபத்திக்காரர்--சிவமதஸ்தர், s. Worshippers or devotees of Siva as distinguished from விட்டுணுபத்தர். சிவபத்தி, s. The religion of Siva. 2. The profession of the Siva religion. 3. Adherence, attachment, or devotedness to Siva. சிவபுண்ணியம், s. Deeds of merit, performances in reference to Siva--as சிவதர்மம். சிவபூசை, s. The worship of Siva as practised in the temple or by the கிரியை க்காரன்; the Siva-pujah, consisting of the offering of flowers, milk, boiled rice, fruits, &c., waving incense and light-reciting mantras and praises, prostrating, before the idol, &c., 2. Mental worship of Siva, in which there is an idol ceremony corresponding to what is mentioned above. சிவபூசைவேளையிலே கரடியைவிட்டாட்டுகிறதா. Is it proper to exhibit a dancing bear during the Siva-pujah--i. e. to trifle on a solemn occasion? சிவபுராணம், s. The Siva-Puranas, forming ten out of the eighteen. See புராணம். சிவபுரி, s. The abode of Siva, or city in the Siva-logam, கைலாசபுரி. 2. The city of Benares, as sacred to Siva, காசி முதலியநகரிகள். சிவபோகம், s. Enjoyment of the soul in union with Siva. (தத்.) சிவப்பிரகாசம், s. A work on the Agama philosophy, exhibiting in a condensed view the doctrines inculcated in சித்தியார், and other cognate works. சிவப்பிரதிட்டை--சிவப்பிரதிஷ்டை, s. The consecration of a temple or image of Siva. சிவப்பிராமணர், s. Brahmans, குருக்கள் who adhere to the Siva or Agama doctrines and practices, as distinguished from those who profess the வைதீகம். சிவப்பிரீதி, s. That which is acceptable, agreeable and pleasing to Siva--as fruits, &c. 2. May it be acceptable to Siva, --spoken by the receiver as an acknowledgement of a gift, an act of reverence, &c. சிவமயம், s. A term of invocation; also of benediction--meaning happiness, prosperity, and success, சுபமஸ்து. சிவமுந்திருக்கூட்டமும், s. See under கூட்டம். சிவமூர்த்திபேதங்கள், s. The different forms assumed by the deity, the gods. சிவராத்திரி, s. (Sometimes சிவநிசி.) The night preceding the new moon in February, kept as a watchnight in honor of Siva. சிவவாக்கியம், s. A poem on theism, wholly condemning polytheism, ஓர் நூல். சிவவாக்கியர், s. The name of a celebrated saint, the author of the poem சிவவாக்கியம். சிவலிங்கம், s. The Linga, as the chief image and material object of worship in the Saiva religion. சிவலோகம், s. The world of Siva, being the upper of the seven superior worlds. See சிவபுரி. சிவவேடம், s. The habiliments, or other badges characteristic of the worshippers of Siva--as red vestments, sacred beads, ashes, the linga, &c. சிவனடியார், s. Votaries of Siva. 2. The sixty-three special votaries of Siva mentioned in Periya Purana. சிவாகமம், s. The Agamas as the scriptures of the Siva sect, being twentyeight; of these the சிவஞானபோதம், a part of the ரௌரவம் and the வாதுளம், are translated into Tamil. The twenty-eight Agamas are the following: 1. காமிகம். 2. யோகசம். 3. சிந்தியம். 4. காரணம். 5. அசிதம். 6. தீபதம். 7. சூக்குமம். 8. சகத்திரம். 9. அஞ்சுமான். 1. சுப்பிரபேதகம். 11. விசயம். 12. நிசுவாசம். 13. சுவாயம்புவம். 14. அனலம். 15. வீரம். 16. ரௌ ரவம். 17. மகுடம். 18. விமலம். 19. சந்திர ஞானம். 2. விம்பம். 21. புரோற்கிதம். 22. இல ளிதம். 23. சித்தம். 24. சந்தானசருவோத்தம். 25. பாரமேச்சுரம். 26. கீரணம். 27. பேதம். 28. வாதுளம். சிவாதனம்--சிவாசனம், s. The place for an image of Siva used for daily worship; [ex ஆதனம்.] சிவாயநம, s. The famous five lettered incantation called the மூலமந்திரம்--as being the foundation of spiritual wisdom and all religion, and the means prescribed and proper for obtaining liberation, from births and union with the supreme. சிவார்ச்சனை, s. The worship of Siva with flowers, incantation, &c.; [ex அர்ச் சனை, worship.] See சிவபூசை. சிவார்ப்பணம்--சிவாற்பணம், s. An oblation to Siva. See அற்பணம். சிவாஸ்திரம், s. A missile weapon or dart said to be given by Siva; [ex அஸ்தி ரம்.] சிவாலயம், s. Saiva temple. சிவானுபவம், s. The bliss of union with Siva; [ex அனுபவம்.] 5)

A general, a commander of an army; [ex அதிபதி.] சேனாதிபத்தியம், s. The office of a general. சேனாதிபன், s. As சேனாதிபதி. 2. (in Culendars.) A planet considered as general for the year, with corresponding astrological results, வருஷபலக்கிரகங்களிலொ ன்று. சேனாபதி, s. A general. 2. Skanda, முருகன்; [ex பதி, lord.] சேனாமுகம், s. The front of an army. 2. A division of an army, consisting of three chariots, three elephants, nine horses and fifteen infantry. சேனைத்தலைவன், s. The leader of an army. சேனைத்தொகை, s. To bear, to suffer, (commonly in the negative.) 2. To interpose assistance, to undertake the whole business. தலைகொய்ய, inf. To behead. (p.) தலைக்கடை--தலைக்கடைவாயில், s. Front gate, or entrance--oppos. to புழைக் கடை. தலைக்கட்ட, inf. To perform the ceremony of putting on the turban again after mourning. 2. To succeed, be completed, accomplished. 3. To prosper, thrive, grow powerful, கைகூட. எடுத்தகாரியந்தலைக்கட்டிவந்தது. The thing was accomplished. தலைக்கட்டு, v. noun. The first of a range of buildings. 2. The head of a family. (c.) 3. [loc.] The ceremony of putting on the turban, as above. தலைக்கட்டுக்கிரண்டுபணம்வரிவாங்கினான். He received two fanams tribute from each house in the first range. தலைக்கட்டுவரி, s. Tax on houses. தலைக்கருவி--தலைச்சீரா--தலைச்சோடு, s. A helmet. தலைக்கறுப்பு, s. He will rise as soon as he sees the back of my head. தலைக்காய், s. The first fruits of a tree, being the finest. தலைக்காவல், s. The chief or mainguard. தலைக்கிறுகிறுப்பு, s. Dizziness. தலைக்குடி, s. The chief family in a place. தலைக்குத்து, s. Headache. See குத்து. தலைக்குமேலே, Above, over, or upon the head. 2. Superior to one. 3. Exceeding all bounds--as price, anger, shame or pride. தங்களுடையசொல்என்தலைக்குமேலே. I take your word upon my head; i. e. shall obey. தலைமேற்றலையா. (fig.) An arduous duty, a burden. தலைச்சுருளி--தலைச்சுருள்வள்ளி, s. A kind of plant, ஈசுரவேர், Aristolochia Ind. தலைச்சுழல்--தலைச்சுற்றல்--தலைச்சுழ ற்சி, v. noun. One who sucks up the brain by stroking the head i. e. deceives and embezzles. தலைதடுமாற்றந்தந்துபுணர்ந்துரைத்தல், v. noun. Treating of subjects out of the usual order for some particular purpose, one of the தந்திரவுத்தி. தலைதடுமாற்றம், s. Confusion, derangement, disorder. தலைதட்ட, inf. The commencement of the dewy season, முன்பனி. தலைப்பா--தலைப்பாகு--தலைப்பாகை. s. A turban. தலைப்பாடு, v. noun. Burden, responsibility, பொறுப்பு. 2. [prov.] Meeting, contact, junction, சந்திப்பு. இடந்தலைப்பாடு. Arrival at a place. தலைப்பாரம், s. Weight in the head, through cold, &c. 2. Weight of the head, compared with the body, as in an infant. 3. [prov.] The lading of a vessel when too much on the bow. தலைப்பாளை, s. The first spatha of the cocoa-nut and other palm trees. 2. [prov.] A kind of projecting head-ornament. தலைப்பித்தம், s. Giddiness of the head. தலைப்பிரட்டை, s. A tadpole, தவளைமீன். தலைப்பிரிய, v. n. To separate from, to leave, to depart, நீங்க. (p.) தலைப்பெய்ய, inf. v. n. To rain heads; i. e. To assemble in great numbers, ஒன் றாகக்கூட. 2. v. a. To bring together, to unite, கூட்ட. (p.) தலைப்போட--தலையிட, inf. [prov.] To engage in, to take on one's self. (c.) தலைப்போர், s. [prov.] First part of an action, event, process. 2. Front, extremity of a place, முகனை. தலைமகள், s. Eldest daughter, மூத்த மகள். (c.) 2. Lady, matron, எசமானி. 3. Wife, மனைவி. தலைமகன், s. Eldest or first born son, மூத்தமகன். 2. A gentleman, துரைமகன். 3. A young gentleman, இளமட்டம். 4. The hero of a poem, வீரன். 5. The head or chief of a place, தலைவன். 6. One of good caste, சாதிமான். 7. A husband, கணவன். தலைமக்கள், s. (plu.) Persons of the first rank in a place. (p.) தலைமடக்கு, v. noun. A repetition of the first word of a line, as ஆதிமடக்கு. 2. Grain given from the harvest, to a woman in care of a rest-house, which she ties up and carries away on her head. தலைமடங்க, inf. To hang the head. 2. To submit. 3. To bend as the ears of the corn, கதிர்சாய. தலைமடை, s. The place where a small channel branches off from a larger. 2. The head of a channel for irrigation, also the end where the water is laved out on plants. தலைமண்டை--தலையோடு, s. The skull. தலைமயக்கம்--தலைமயக்கு, v. noun Swimming of the head, intoxication. தலைமயங்க, inf. To come together, to be brought together, to unite. 2. To assemble, to join, to meet, கூடிவர. 3. To mix, to be amalgamated, கலங்க. (p.) தலைமயிர், s. Hair of the head. தலைமயிர்வாங்க, inf. To shave off the hair for the first time. தலைமறையவிருக்க, inf. To remain concealed. தலைமாடு, s. (Gen. தலைமாட்டின்.) The head of a bed, place for the head when a person is lying down. See கால்மாடு. தலைமாடுகால்மாடாகக்கிடக்கிறான். He lies with his head where his feet should be. தலைமாணாக்கர், s. Head scholars. (c.) தலைமாலை, s. The garland of skulls worn by Siva, சிவன்மாலை. தலைமுழுக, inf. To bathe one's self, head and all. அவன்தலைமுழுகிப்போனான். She has bathed, --that is, had a monthly course. தலைமுழுக்கு, v. noun. Bathing with oil. 2. A woman's monthly courses, catamenia, மகளிர்சூதகம். தலைமுறி, s. [prov.] Piece of a fish, yam, &c., near the head. தலைமுறை, s. Generation, lineal descent. தலைமுறைகண்டவன். An ancestor. தலைமுறைதலைமுறையாக. From generation to generation. தலைமுறையில்லாததாழ்வு. Extinction of a generation or family. (R.) தலைமுறைப்பட்டவன். A person of an ancient and high family. தலைமுறையிலில்லாதவழக்கம். A custom unknown to one's ancestors. தலைமூட்டை, s. A load for the head. See தலைச்சுமை. தலைமூட்டைக்காரன், s. A porter. தலைமூர்ச்சனை, s. Trouble, vexation, தீராதகலக்கம். தலைமூளை,s. Brain in the head in distinction from the marrow in the bones. தலைமேற்கொள்ள, inf. To take on the head; i. e. to obey implicitly. 2. To express submission. 3. To reverence. தலைமோதிக்கொண்டுதிரிய, inf. To walk about beating the head from sorrow or despair. தலையசைக்க, inf. To nod the head in approval, or shake it in displeasure. தலயடி--தலையடிப்பு, v. noun. Trouble, vexation, annoyance. 2. The first threshing of corn, by beating the head of the sheaf against the ground. தலையடிக்க, inf. To be troubled with, to be the cause of trouble to one. தலையணை, s. Pillow, bolster, cushion. தலையலங்காரம், s. A head-dress. See தலைக்கோலம். (c.) தலையழிதல், v. noun. Being ruined, perishing--used in cursing. தலையவதாரம்பண்ண, inf. [prov.] To behead. Destiny, fate, as supposed to be written in the head by Brahma, according to the actions of previous births, தலைவிதி. 2. Signature to a bond or instrument, inserted at the beginning. 3. [prov.] A basket cap, as தலைப்பட்டை. தலைவாழையிலை, s. The top leaf of a plantain tree. தலைவி, s. (mas. தலைவன்.) A lady, a mistress, a matron. 2. A wife, மனைவி. தலைவிதி, s. Fate written in the head. See தலையெழுத்து. தலைவிரிகோலம், s. Dishevelled locks of persons in a fright, in sorrow, &c. தலைவிரிச்சான், appel. n. One with matted hair, தலைமயிர்முடியாதவன். 2. A plant, சாரணை. 3.
