[in grammar.] To accrue, be derived from, உண்டாக; as தவத்தாலணைந்தபுதல் வன், a child obtained by penance. விளக்கணைந்தது. The lamp is extinguished. வினையாலணையும்பெயர், s. Inflections of verbs declined like nouns, as நடந்தான், he walked, or he who walked; நடந்தானை, him who walked; நடந்தானால், by him who walked, &c. அணைவு, s. aṉaiya (p. 33) --அன்ன. The crude form of a symbolic verb derived from the demonstrative அ, having two distinct uses. As a term of similitude, it is an affix but regularly conjugated in two forms, being complete in each, in all it persons, varieties and uses, as a verb, a participle, a noun, &c., the same as other symbolic verbs. It also expresses likeness to the person or thing indicated by the word to which it is affixed, உவம வுருபு. 2. It is sometimes equivalent to the simple pronoun; as, அன்னான். Such a man. (p.) Singular. அனையன்--அனையேன். I am like. அனையாய்--அனையை. Thou art like. அனையன்--அனையான். He is like. அன்னான். Such a man. அன்னாள். Such a matron. அன்னது. Such a thing. Plural. அனையெம்--அனையேம்--அனையோம். We are like. அனையிர்--அனையீர். Ye are like. அனையர்--அனையார். They are like. அன்னர்--அன்னார். Such persons. அனைய--அனையன--அன்ன. They (things) are like. அனையமன்னற்கழிவுமுண்டாங்கொலோ? Can such a prince ever be ruined? பவளமனையவாய். The coral-mouthed. எம்மனோர்க்கியம்புமாறரிதே. It is not possible for mortals like me to declare, &c. மயிலன்னாய். You who are (elegant) as a peacock, (addressed to a lady.) 128)

amukku (p. 20) கிறேன், அமுக்கினேன், வேன், அமுக்க, v. a. To crush, press or squeeze, as a fruit, a boil, &c., அமுத்த. 2. Press down, press in or under, as a vessel into water, immerse, depress, press down or in, indent by pressure, அமிழ்த்த. 3. (fig.) To oppress, நெருக்க. நீரிலேசெம்பையமுக்கிமொண்டுவா. Sink the brass pot in the water, draw it up, and bring it. அமுக்கு, v. noun. Compression, depression, oppression as by nightmare, pressure as by the hand of the bailiff, அழுத்துகை. 2. That which compresses, depresses, &c., an incumbent weight, அமுக்குபாரம். அமுக்குண்டு கதறிக்கொண்டுகிடந்தான், He lay crying out, prostrate under the burden. அமுக்கன், s. One who does things secretly, இரகசியத்திற்கருமமுடிப் போன். 2. A sly, cunning person, dissembler, a deceiver, தந்திரகாரன். (c.) 3. [prov.] Nightmare, நித்திரையிலமுக்குமாவி. 20)

amungku (p. 20) கிறேன், அமுங்கினேன், வேன், அமுங்க, v. n. To be pressed, crushed, to yield to pressure, (as a ripe fruit, a boil, &c.,) become shrivelled, dried up as a blister, அழுந்த. 2. To sink அமிழ். (c.) வீடுவிழவெல்லாருமழுங்கிப்போனார்கள். The house falling, they were all crushed. 22)

arumai (p. 26) s. Rareness, scarceness, scantiness, அபூர்வம். 2. Preciousness, desirableness, pre-eminence. மேன்மை. 3. Difficulty, laboriousness, வருத்தம். 4. Impossibility, unattainableness, கூடாமை. 5. Delicacy, சிறப்பு.--Note. As an adjective, மை is dropped before a consonant with a change of that, when required in combination, and அரு may be changed into அரிய with or without து, or the last vowel may be dropped, and the first lengthened as in ஆருயிர், precious life. அருங்கலைநாயகன், s. Buddha, the lord of eminent sciences, புத்தன். அருங்கலைவினோதன், s. one devoted to learning; one whose time is spent in cultivating the arts and sciences. அருங்கிடை, s. Extreme hunger from long abstinence, &c., பட்டிணி. அருங்கிடைகிடக்க, inf. To be in a starving condition. அருங்கேடன், s. One who is imperishable, who will always prosper. (குறள்.) 2. (c.) A very treacherous man, a profligate wretch. அருங்கோடை, s. Vehement heat. 2. Severe drought. அருஞ்சிறை, s. Rigorous servitude, கடுஞ்சிறை. (Ram.) 2. Hell, நரகம். அருநரகம், s. A cruel hell. அருநிலை, s. Difficult standing said of a ford when impassable. அருநிழல், s. A slight shade. அருநெறி, s. A narrow or difficult way. 2. Gate-way or entrance. அருந்தமிழ், s. Elegant Tamil. அருந்தவம், s. Rigid austerities. அருந்தவர், s. Ascetics. அருந்தூதன், s. A tormentor, one who inflicts pain, வேதனைசெய்வோன். அருமருந்து, s. Nectar, அமிர்தம். In classical works, this in the form அருமருந்தன்னபிள்ளை is contracted to அருமந்த, precious as nectar, as, அருமந்தபிள்ளை. A very dear child, அருமந்ததேர். A very costly chariot. அருமறை, s. The sacred Vedas. Ell. 145. 4. அருமறைக்கொடியோன், s. A name of Dronácharya, the military preceptor of the Pandavas and Kurus, because of the Vedic device on his banner. அருமைப்படுத்த, inf. To make scarce, hard, difficult. 2. To impart reluctantly, make much of. அரும்பண்டம், s. A rare article, choice wares, valuable commodity. அரும்பிணி, s. An incurable disease. (நாலடி.) Ell. 118. அரும்பூட்டு, s. [prov.] A girdle, waist-string, necklace, &c., so short as scarcely to be brought to meet, a string, rope, &c., so short as to be tied with difficulty, a bow-string so short as to be liable to break if brought up too far, any thing too little, too short, too narrow, &c., எட்டாப்பூட்டு. 2. Difficulty in settling a negotiation, agreement, &c., இணக்கக்கூடாமை. 3. Entanglement, ensnarement, மோசத்திலகப்படுகை. 4. Forced connection in language, clauses disconnected or not joined naturally, difficult or unnatural; construction, தொடர்ச்சி யின்மை. சொற்களையரும்பூட்டாய்த் தொடுத்துப்பேசினான். He spoke in an unconnected manner. அரும்பொருள், s. Excellent advice, hard doctrine, a rare or difficult meaning. 2. A choice or precious article. அருவினை, s. A great sin. அருவினைகளைந்து. The five great sins. தெய்வமொருவனென்றேத்தி யொருமித்திருந்தால் அருவினைகளைந்துமறும். The five great sins will be forgiven him who worships the one God with singleness of heart. (கம்பன்.) 5)

āṭu (p. 38) s. A goat, sheep, (the word is common to both,) அசம். (c.) 2. The sign Aries of the zodiac, மேடவிராசி. 3. Victory, success, வெற்றி. (p.) ஆடுதின்னாப்பாலை, s. A plant, (lit.) that which the goat will not eat, புழுக்கொல்லி, Aristolochia bracteata, L. See பாலை. ஆடுமாடு, s. Cattle, the mixed multitude of cow and sheep kinds. The varieties are காட்டாடு, a wild sheep; குறும் பாடு, a crump-horned, fleecy sheep; கொடி யாடு, வெள்ளாடு or காராடு, a long legged sheep or goat; செம்மறியாடு, a reddish sheep; பள்ளையாடு, a prolific goat or goat of low size, and வரையாடு, a mountain sheep. ஆட்டிறைச்சி, s. Mutton. ஆட்டுக்கடா, s. A he goat or ram, ஆணாடு. ஆட்டுக்கடாத்தானம், s. The gift of a he goat, with money, to avert or counteract the evil effects of an unpropitious planetary influence--made to a Brahman who is to offer incantations for the party for a certain number of days. ஆட்டுக்கல், s. The bezoar of the sheep, பாஷாணத்தொன்று. ஆட்டுக்கால், s. The அடம்பு creeper. ஆட்டுக்காற்கல், s. Coral stone, கொக்கைக்கல். ஆட்டுக்கிடை, s. A sheep-fold. ஆட்டுக்குட்டி, s. A lamb or kid. ஆட்டுச்செவிப்பதம், s. A certain immature stage in the growth of the kernel of the cocoanut, the maturest state in which the இளநீர் can be eaten, தேங்காய்வழுக்கைப்பருவம். 9)

ārāy (p. 41) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ஆ ராய, v. a. To investigate, scrutinize, examine, inquire, deliberate, contemplate, explore, சோதிக்க. 2. To seek, seek for, தேட; [ex ஆர், et ஆய்.] கண்டாராய்மனமே. Consider well, O my soul. ஆராய்ந்துபார்க்க, inf. To examine well, search into, inquire after. ஆராய்ச்சி, v. noun. Search, examination, investigation, deliberation, சோத னை. 2. [pers. noun.] [prov.] A sheriff or bailiff, one who has the command of the inferior officers in a court or office, a superintendent, தலையாரி. ஆராய்ச்சி--ஆராய்ச்சிமணி, s. A bell attached to a royal palace, rung by those who seek for justice from the king. ஆராய்வு, v. noun. Search, examination, investigation. 2. iṭi (p. 45) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், ய, v. n. To be broken, battered, demolished--as a wall, &c., to fall to pieces, crumble in ruins, உ டைய. 2. To be washed or broken down-as the bank of a river, கரையிடிய. 3. To become partly bruised--as rice in a mortar, நொறுங்க. இடிகரை, s. A broken bank, margin, &c. of a river, tank or well. இடிசாமம், s. [vul.] A time of ruin, கெடுகாலம். 2. Defamation, reproach, நிந்தை. இடிசுவர், s. A dead wall, a broken wall. இடிவு, v. noun. iṭṭēṟṟm (p. 45) s. [prov.] Tyranny, cruelty, injustice, கொடுமை. 2. A gross falsehood, false accusation, முழுப்பொய். இப்படி இட்டேற்றம் பேசுகிறதாகாது. It is not good to speak such a gross falsehood. ஏனிப்படி இட்டேற்றம்பண்ணுகிறாய்? Why do you do so unjust an action? 123)
