Touch of the hand, கையினாற்றொடுகை. கரபாத்திரம், s. The mode of using the hands in dancing which are of twenty-three kinds, viz.: 1. பதாகை, stretching all the five fingers keeping them close and straight. 2. திரிபதாகை, bending the thumb and ring-finger and stretching the rest. 3. பிறை, keeping the other four fingers close together separately from the thumb. 4. சர்ப்பசிரம், keeping the palm of the hand curved. 5. சாளையம், bending the little finger and ring-finger and stretching the rest. 6. மான்றலை, keeping the middle three fing ers down and lifting the other two up. 7. பதுமகோசரம், keeping up the palm of the hand opened having the fingers bent. 8. சிலீமுகம், keeping the tip of the forefinger at the bottom of the thumb and the tips of each of the rest at the middle of the adjoining finger. 9. முட்டி, folding all the four fingers and keeping the thumb above the middle finger. 1. சிக ரம், folding all the other fingers and keeping the thumb stretched. 11. சூசி, stretching the pointing finger and keeping the thumb curved while the others are folded. 12. கபித்தம், keeping the tips of the thumb and fore-finger close together and the other folded. 13. கடகம், keeping the tips of the thumb and forefinger together, the middle finger bent and the rest stretched. 14. சந்தங்கிஷம், keeping the tips of the thumb and pointing finger together, stretching the rest. 15. அஞ்சவாய், keeping the ringfinger and little finger separately stretched up and keeping the tips of the rest together. 16. முகிழ், keeping the tips of all the fingers together. 17. திரிலிங்கம், keeping the tips of the thumb and pointing finger together, the rest curved and the wrist a little bent. 18. மிருகசிரம், stretching up the pointing finger and the little finger and keeping the rest close together. 19. சிங்கநகம், keeping up the palm of the hand having the fingers almost folded. 2. கூர்மம், stretching up the middle finger while the others are bent down. 21. பூரணம், stretching all the five fingers straight not being close together. 22. மென்னிலை, bending the thumb and stretching up the rest. 23. முன்னதம், separating the fore-finger from the rest. கரவாளம், s. The சிறுகாஞ்சொறி plant, Hemp-leaved tragia. குறுமீன், s. The name of a fish. குறிது--குறியது, s. A short thing, a low or dwarfish creature, little used. குறியர், (plu. of குறியன்.) s. Dwarfs --opposed to நெடியர். குறுமுனி, s. A name of Agastya; lit. the dwarfish sage. குற்றுடைவாள், s. A cimeter, a short dagger for stabbing an enemy, சிறுவாள். குறுவாழ்க்கை, s. Poverty, தரித்திரம். 2. Short-lived pleasure. (p.) குறுவிசனம்--குறுவிசாரம், s. A gloomy state of mind, melancholy; calamity. குறுவிலை, s. Scarcity, சிறுவிலை. குறுவிழிவிழிக்க, inf. [com. குறுமிழி மிழிக்க.] To stare; to look intently, through anger, fear, &c. குறுவேர்வை, s. A sudden, slight perspiration through diffidence, fear, &c. குற்றேவல், s. A slight commission; a trifling job, low employment, servility, drudgery, menial service. குற்றுயிர், s. Half dead; lit. half alive, குறைப்பிராணன். 2. kūṉu (p. 136) கிறேன், கூனினேன், வேன், கூன, v. n. (from Sans. Koona.) To curve, to become crooked, to bend down, கோண. 2. To be hump-backed, முதுகுவளைய. 3. To contract, close-as the tortoise, the snail, &c., ஒடுங்க. கூனிப்போக, inf. To become humpbacked. 2. To be bent, by age. கெ *கெசம், s. An elephant, யானை. 2. A measure of two cubits, a yard, இரண்டுமுழங் கொண்டஅளவு. See கசம் and கயம், and their compounds.

A gown or robe. தெறிச்சட்டை, s. [prov.] A jacket with buttons. சட்டைகழற்ற, inf. To take off the jacket. 2. To cast the skin--as a snake. (c.) சட்டைக்காரன், s. One in European dress, a Portugnese; a Eurasian. (c.) சட்டைச்சாக்கு, s. A pocket. (Modern.) சட்டைச்சாம்பு, s. [loc.] Cloth seventytwo cubits in the piece; long-cloth. (Limited usage.) சட்டைநாதன், s. [com. சட்டநாதன்.] A name of Siva--as Bhairava. சட்டைபண்ண, inf. To esteem, regard, honor. (c.) சட்டைமுனி, s. [com. சட்டமுனி]. A celebrated author of works on medicine, &c., regarded as a சித்தன். 71) *
சாண்
cāṇ (p. 174) s. A span of twelve fingers' breadth, or form the end of the thumb to the end of the little finger extended, ஓரளவு. (c.) சாண்கும்பி--சாண்வயிறு, s. The abdomen a span long. சாண்வயிற்றுக்குப்பாடுபட, inf. To labor for the cravings of the belly a span long. சாண்வயிறுவளர்க்க, inf. To get a mere livelihood, (lit.) to nourish a span of belly. சாண்சீலை, s. [loc.] The fore-lap, the cloth covering the privy parts. சாணளப்பான்--சாணளந்தான்பூச்சி, s. A kind of insect that moves forward by its head and tail, measuring its length at every movement. சாணேற முழஞ்சறுக்க. To climb a span up and slide a cubit down--spoken of slight advance, profit, &c., followed by great decrease. சாணோவயிறு சரீரமெல்லாம்வயிறோ. Is his belly a span long, or is he all belly-spoken of one who supports himself dishonorably. எறும்புந்தன்கையாலெண்சாண். The ant measures eight of its own spans, i. e., no one is to be despised for his low condition or estate. 93)

cōmaṉ (p. 212) s. The moon, சந்திரன். W. p. 945. SOMA. 2. The name of an ancient liberal king, ஓர்வள்ளல். 3. (c.) A cloth worn by men, sometimes by women, wrapped round the waist, வேஷ்டி. 4. Cloth in general, சீலை. 5. One of the eight demigods, அஷ்டவசுக்களிலொரு வன். 6. Camphor, கர்ப்பூரம். 7. Soap, சவக் காரம். 8. A kind of rank in Ceylon wear three cloths one over another; the வேட்டி; சோமன். and துப்பட்டி. சோமகதி, s. Moon's daily motion. சோமசுந்தரன், s. Siva, சிவன். 2. A name of one of the Pandyan kings, ஓர் பாண்டியன். சோமசூரியாக்கினி, s. The sun, moon and fire. See முச்சுடர். சோமசேகரன்--சோமநாதன், s. Siva, as worshipped at Somnauth, சிவன். சோமமணல், s. Sand containing silver, வெள்ளிமணல். (R.) சோமமண்டலம், s. The region, orbit or disc of the man. சோமலிங்கம், s. The இலிங்கம் of Siva, as worshipped by Soma or the moon at சோமாரணியம். சோமலிங்கர், s. (Hon.) Siva as worshipped at சோமாரணியம். சோமவாரம், s. Monday. (Colloq.) சோமனுப்பு, s. Rock-salt, as இந்துப்பு. சோமன்சாம்பு--சோமன்மடி, s. [loc.] A piece containing several cloths or handkerchiefs for men. See சாம்பு. சோமன்சோடு, s. A cloth and shawl, the two forming a common dress; one twelve, the other six cubits. (c.) சோமாரணியம், s. The forest where the moon made puja to the Siva Linga, ஓர் சிவஸ்தலம்; [ex ஆரணியம்.] சோமேசுரன், s. Siva as worshipped by the moon, சிவன்; [ex ஈசுரன்.] பட்டுக்கரைச்சோமன், s. A சோமன் cloth with a silk border. (c.) பிள்ளைச்சோமன், s. A small cloth for a boy. 100)

One of three kinds of charity, மூவகையறத்தினொன்று. --Note. In the meanings of fine. punishment and homage, it is commonly pronounced தெண்டம். தண்டச்சோற்றுக்காரன். A sluggard, a drone. அடிதண்டம், s. A flogging. 2. The prostration of a pilgrim who measures his way with his body in going to a temple; prostration before a superior. இடுதண்டம், s. [prov.] Unjust seizure of an innocent person. தண்டதரன், s. Yama, the god of death; (lit.) the club bearer, நமன்; also தண் டன். 2. Bhima, வீமன். (p.) தண்டநாயகன், s. Chief of an army, சேனாபதி. 2. A king, as receiving fines, அரசன். 3. Nandy, the bullock-vehicle of Siva, நந்தி. (p.) தண்டபாணி, s. Yama, நமன். 2. Vishnu, விஷ்ணு. 3. A servant of Siva, தண்டேசன்; [ex பாணி, hand; (lit.) the club-grasping hand.] (p.) தண்டமிறுக்க, inf. To pay a fine. தண்டம்பண்ண, inf. To make obeisance, to worship the deity or guru. 2. தேறு
tēṟu (p. 260) கிறேன், தேறினேன், வேன், தேற, v. n. To recover strength, vigor, &c.,-as persons, beasts, plants, to grow well-as vegetation; to thrive, improve, செழிக்க. 2. To recover from swooning, intoxication, drooping, தெளிய. 3. To be comforted, consoled, solaced, soothed; to recover from fear, to cheer up, take courage, தைரியங்கொள்ள. 4. To make proficiency, arrive at perfection in a lesson, or in an art, &c., அதிகரிக்க. 5. To be through, accomplished, celebrated, perfect, mature, clear as the mind, to come to perfection, maturity, முதிர. 6. To prove, to result, to amount to--as profit, to turn out clear, பலிக்க. (c.) 7. To become stiff, hard, &c.,as boiled rice, fruits, &c., when cole, சோறு முதலியவிறைக்க. 8. To stay, abide, தங்க. (சது.) 9. v. a. To form as opinion, to ascertain, to arrive at certainty, நிச்சயிக்க. 1. To confide, trust in, நம்ப. ஒருமுழந்தேறும். There will be one cubit clear. தேறலர்--தேறலார், s. Foes, enemies, பகைவர். 2. Ignorant persons, அறியாதார். தேறவிசாரிக்க, inf. [also தீரவிசாரிக்க.] To Investigate throughly so as to be certain. தேறாமை, v. noun. (neg.) Uncertainty, unfruitfulness, unsteadiness. தேறார், appel. n. Settlement, finishing, தீர்மானம். தேறுகடைபண்ண, inf. To make a settlement, come to a decision. தேறுசூடு, s. [prov.] Branding cattle to promote their fattening, தெளிவுசூடு. 2. Brand on cattle. தேறுதலை, s. [vul.] Courage, தைரியம். 2. Comfort, ஆறுதல். தேறுநர், s. The learned, கற்றோர். 2. Trust-worthy persons, நம்பத்தக்கவர். (p.) படிப்பிலேதேற, inf. To comfort, console, cheer. (c.) தேற்றம், v. noun. Certainty, assurance, &c., as தேறல், 1, 2. (சது.) 2. Clearness, தெளிவு. 3. [in gram.] An empatic, ஏ, or மன்ற, as expressive of certainty, emphasis, &c., தேற்றக்குறிப்பு. 4. Recovery from sorrow, &c., as தேற்றரவு. 5. Comfort, as தேறல். 6. Thriving, firmness, good growth, செழிப்பு. ஆள்தேற்றமாயிருக்கிறான். The person has gained strength, flesh, &c. தேற்றக்குறிப்பு--தேற்றப்பொருள், s. See தேற்றல். தேற்றங்கொடுக்க, inf. To comfort, console, encourage. 2. To gain or recover strength, grow stout and firm, to thrive as persons, beasts, &c. 3. To recover from dejection, to be cheerful as தெளிவுகொடுக்க. தேற்றஞ்செய்ய, தேற்றம்பண்ண, inf. To comfort, console, encourage. தேற்றமாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak comfortably. தேற்றமானபயிர், s.
