añcu (p. 7) கிறேன், அஞ்சினேன், வேன், அஞ்ச, v. a. [used with the dative, sometimes with the accusative.] To fear, dread, பயப்பட, as அவனுக்கஞ்சுகிறேன், I fear him; அவனையஞ்சினான். He feared him. அஞ்சல், v. noun. Fearing, dreading, பயப்படல், Also the optative, வியங் கோண்முற்று. 2. Defeat, தோல்வி. அஞ்சாப்பட்டயம், s. [prov.] A certificate from the king, formerly inscribed on metal, clearing a man from the charge of guilt and re-establishing his rights as a citizen; a writ of authority, a security against oppression or ill-treatment. 3. amai (p. 20) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To yield, come to a right state, submit, comply, obey, acquiesce, சம்மதிக்க. 2. To become settled, peaceable, quiet; to subside, படிய. 3. To be at one's disposal, as a thing that may be effected, acquired, brought to good order, &c., வசமாக. 4. To fit, suit, join nicely, be adapted to, இசைய. 5. To be destined, be subject to a divine appointment or destiny, good or bad, விதிக்குட்பட. 6. To be made, formed, adjusted, திருந்த. 7. To be satisfied, contented, composed, comfortable, resigned, திருத்தியாக. 8. (in the third person only) To be enough, sufficient, போ துமாக. 9. To happen, occur, come to pass, சம்பவிக்க. 1. To belong to, be connected or combined with, be appropriate to, பொ ருந்த. 11. To be obtained, அமர. (p.)--Note. Most of the meanings of this word have reference to the mind. சாஸ்திரத்திற்கமைந்துநடக்கிறவன், He is one who obeyed the shasters. ஐம்புலனமைந்தவன், s. One who has suppressed the five senses, or to whom the senses are subject. இது என்விசாரணைக்கமைந்த காரியம். It is a matter at my disposal. என்விருப்பத்திற்கமைந்தபடிநடந்தது. It has occurred to my satisfaction. சுகதுக்கம் ஊழின்படி அமையும். Good and evil are appointed according to former character. செயுநீர்மைசெய்யாதமைகலாவாறு. Owing to dissatisfaction at inability to do charity. (குறள். 22. அதி.) அமையவுண்மின். Eat enough. இரட்சிப்பு இறைவனுக்கமைந்தது. Salvation is of God. அமையாமை, neg. v. noun. Unsubmission, insubordination, disquietness, unfitness, கீழ்ப்படியாமை. அமைவு, v. noun. Subjection, subordination, acquiescence, பொருந்துகை. 2. Composure of mind, tranquillity, contentment, மனவமைதி. 3. Repression of the senses, subjection of the mental powers, அடக்கம். அமைவடக்கம், s. Concealment, security, silence. அமைவன், s. The god of the Jainas, அருகன். 2. An ascetic, துறந்தோன். 3. A ஞானி. 4. (in general.) One who controls the passions, அடக்கமுடையோன். 5. A learned man, அறிவுடையோன். (p.) 35)

ammu (p. 21) கிறேன், அம்மினேன், வேன், அம்ம, v. n. To dissemble on hearing a thing spoken of by seeming to know nothing of it, to act with reserve and duplicity wanting ingenuousness, மாரீசம் பண்ண. 2. கிறது, அம்மினது, ம், அம்ம. [prov. impr. for பம்பு.] To cover thickly as a mass of motionless clouds, overspreading the heavens, obscuring the rays of the sun, &c., மூட. 3. To feel the sensation of weight in the head, as the effect of cold, தலைகனக்க. அம்முக்கள்ளன், s. A cheat, a fraudulent fellow, one who is void of honest principles, one that is a rogue within. 33)

arcṉ (p. 22) s. (plu. அரசர்.) A king, prince. இராசா. 2. A supreme master, God, எப்பொருட்குமிறைவன். 3. The planet Jupiter, வியாழம். 4. The title of the chief of the முக்குவர் caste, முக்குவர்தலைவன்.--Note. There were three famous kings; viz.: 1. சேரன். 2. சோழன். 3. பாண்டியன், which see. (p.) அரசரொளி, s. The splendor or glory of kings; it is of four kinds; viz.: 1. கொடை, gifts. 2. தலையளி, condescension. 3. செங்கோல், justice. 4. குடியோம் பல், care of his subjects. அரசர்குணம், s. The three properties of kings; viz.: 1. தூங்காமை, decision. 2. கல்வி, learning. 3. துணிவு, prowess. அரசர்க்குக்குழு, s. The five different officers of a king; viz.: 1. Ministers, மந்திரியர். 2. Soothsayers, புரோகிதர், 3. Generals, சேனாபதியர். 4. Messengers, தூதர். 5. Spies, வேயர். அரசர்க்குத்துணைவர், s. The eight assistants of a king; viz.: 1. Ministers, மந்திரியர். 2. Rulers, கருமாதிகாரர். 3. Relations, சுற்றம். 4. Door-keepers, கடை காப்பாளர். 5. Citizens of his capital, நகர மாக்கள். 6. Commanders, படைத்தலைவர். 7. Cavaliers, இவுளிமறவர். 8. Warriors on elephants, யானைவீரர். அரசர்க்குறுதிச்சுற்றம், s. The five confidential servants of a king, as, Companions, நட்பர்; Brahmans, அந்தணாளர்; Cooks, மடையர்; Physicians, மருத்துவர், and Prophets, நிமித்திகர். அரசர்சின்னம், s. The twenty-one distinguishing marks of a king. See இராசசின்னம். அரசர்நால்வகையியல்பு, s. The four special qualities of kings; viz.: 1. அஞ்சாமை, fearlessness, fortitude. 2. ஈகை, bountifulness. 3. அறிவு, discernment. 4. ஊக்கம், prowess. அரசர்வல்லமை, s. The four acts or powers of kings; viz.: 1. இயற்றல், making acquisitions. 2. ஈட்டல், collecting his revenues. 3. காத்தல், securing them. 4. வகுத்தல், distributing or expending them. அரசனாணை, s. The order or decree of a king, சாசனம். அரசனுயிர்காத்தோன், s. A unicorn, as the fabled protector of a king, காண்டாமிருகம். அரசன்விருத்தம், s. A kind of poem describing the country and magnificence of the king, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். அரசி, s. A queen, இராசஸ்திரீ. 2. A lady, தலைவி. 42)

aṟai (p. 33) s. The sound of a letter, எழுத்தினோசை. 2. A word or sentence as uttered (not as written), சொல். 3. A rock, பாறை. 4. Peak of a mountain, மலையுச்சி. (p.) 5. A room, a chamber, cell, a separate apartment of a house, அறைவீடு. 6. (c.) Drawer of a box or otherwise, பெட்டிய றை. 7. (p.) The apartment in a chessboard, அரங்கு. 8. The cells in a bee-hive, தேன்கூட்டினறை. 9. Hanging ornaments, தூக்கங்கள். 1. A curtain, திரைச்சீலை. 11. An excavation, cavern, முழைஞ்சு. அறைகுறை, s. Wants, necessities, troubles. அறைகுறைபார்க்க, inf. To repair damages. அறைகூவ, inf. To challenge, summon to combat. (p.) அறைக்கட்டுக்கட்ட, inf. To build rooms and apartments in a house. 2. To construct a temporary temple on a certain festival. அறைபோக, inf. To undermine, make an underground passage, கீழறுக்க. 2. To desert to an enemy. அறைமுறையிட, inf. To complain, state one's wants and complaints. அறையுங்குறையுமான, rel. part. Incomplete, unfinished, half-done. 2. Injured, loose, defective, torn. அறைவீடு, s. A house with separate rooms or cells. 2. aẕku (p. 31) s. Beauty, comeliness, handsomeness, elegance, propriety, fineness, யௌவனம். (c.) 2. The beauties or graces of language or style, நஙலின்பத்தழகு. These as given in the பாயிரம் of நன்னூல், are ten; viz.: 1. சுருங்கச்சொல்லல், speaking concisely. 2. விளங்கவைத்தல், treating a subject clearly and plainly. 3. நவின்றோர்க் கினிமை, acceptableness to the educated. 4. நன்மொழிபுணர்த்தல், using elegant words, suitable expressions. 5. ஓசையுடைமை, being pleasant to the ear with a good rhythm and cadence. 6. ஆழமுடைத்தாதல், being comprehensive, profound. 7. முறையின்வைப்பு, systematic arrangement, method. 8. உலக மலையாமை, being without obscurity or contrariety. 9. விழுமியதுபயத்தல், giving a good sense, as allegorical, &c. 1. விளங்குதார ணத்ததாகுதல், having common examples of as to be understood by all. 3. One of the eight வனப்பு, in composition, the proper choice of words. (See வனப்பு.) 4. Jaggary, coarse sugar சருக்கரை. (M. Dic.) (p.) அழகன், s. [fem. அழகி.] A handsome man. 2. [Per antonomasia.] The god Vishnu, honorifically, அழகர். அழகர்மலை, s. One of the hundred and eight places sacred to Vishnu. 2. One of the six places sacred to Subramania. அழகாரம், s. Brilliancy of expression, சித்திரமாகப்பேசுகை. 2. Mere, empty compliment, வீண்புகழ்ச்சியாகப்பே சுகை. (p.) அழகுகாட்ட, inf. To display one's beauty, ornaments, make a parade of dress, &c., 2. To make odd gestures, as children, &c., mimic, mock by gestures, கரகஞ்செய்ய. (c.) அழகுத்தேமல், s. A beauty spot. See தேமல். 35)

ākku (p. 36) கிறேன், ஆக்கினேன், வேன், ஆக்க, v. a. To cause to be, create, effect, make, உண்டாக்க. 2. To cook, to mature. to accomplish, சமைக்க. 3. To raise one from obscurity, want, distress, danger, கைதூக்கிவிட. It is frequently joined with nouns to form compound verbs, as குண மாக்குதல், &c.; [ex ஆ, v.] ஆக்கல்--ஆக்குகை--ஆக்குதல், v. noun. Making, creating, &c., உண்டாக் குகை. 15) *

ācīrvti (p. 36) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To bless, pronounce benedictions; when by brahmans, they spread open the left hand, (no others bless with this form) உயர்ந்தோனிழிந்தோனுக்காசிகூற.--Note. The person who blesses is supposed to have the power of bestowing good or of securing it by his merit. 67)

The base or fundamental stone of a pillar, pedestal, &c. (p.) 48)

āriyaṉ (p. 41) s. A learned man, a sage, அறிவுடையோன். 2. A guru or priest, குரு. 3. A poet, புலவன். 4. A superior, மேலவன். 5. A physician, வைத்தியன். 6. An out-cast, an unclean stranger of a foreign faith, மிலேச்சன். 7. Eyanar, ஐயனார். 8. The sun, சூரியன். 9. A buffoon, juggler, தொம்பன். (p.) ஆரியக்கூத்து, s.
