aḷ (p. 33) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To measure, fathom, expore, estimate, அளவுசெய்ய. 2. To apportion, mete out, measure out, பங்கிட. 3. To extend, reach, எட்ட. விசும்பளந்தாண்டுநின்றிடுஞ்சிகரியை. The turrets which reached to the sky. மரக்காலைப்பாய்ச்சியளக்கிறான். He measures thrusting in the marcal; i. e. into the heap. பறைவெட்டியளக்கிறான்--பறைதட்டியளக்கிறான். He measures by striking off the excess of the grain. ஐயனளந்தபடி. As God allots. அளக்கை--அளத்தல், v. noun. Measuring. அளபு, v. noun. Measurement, அ ளவு. 2. The lengthening of the sound of a letter, அளபெடை. அளபெடுக்க, inf. To lengthen a letter, whether vowel or consonant, by the insertion of another short letter or mute, as the case may be, for the sake of the poetry, and sometimes for euphony, as, கழூஉ for கழு; மாத்திரைமிக் கொலிக்க. அளபெடை, v. noun. The lengthening of a letter chiefly for the sake of the verse. There are two ways of doing this. 1. உயிரளபெடை, the addition of a short vowel to a long one, either in the beginning, middle, or end of a word--as ஈஇ கை, gift--for ஈகை; படாஅ கை, banner--for படாகை; and குழூஉ, multitude--for குழு. Again this is divided into இயற்கையளபெடை, and செயற்கையளபெ டை. 2. ஒற்றளபெடை, the lengthening of the mutes, ங், ஞ், ண், ந், ம், ன், வ், ய், ல், ள், and ஃ by being repeated twice either in the middle or end of a word when they are placed after one or two short syllables, as அரங்கம், முரஞ்ஞ்சு, மண்ண்ணு, அம்ம்பு, கொள்ள்க, விலஃஃகி. அளப்பம்--அளப்பு, v. noun. Measuring, அளக்கை. 2. (fig.) Fate, destiny, ஊழ். 3. Needless repetition, chatter, அலப்பு. 4. Expressing dissatisfaction, முறுமுறுக்கை. வனிதையரளப்பிலர், The damsels are without number. அளப்பளக்க, inf. To repeat, use needless repetitions, prate, chatter, அ லப்ப. 2. To complain, grumble, express dissatisfaction, முறுமுறுக்க. அளப்பன், s. [prop. அலப்பன்.] A babbler, prater, chatterer, வீணாகப்பேசு வோன். 13)

il (p. 55) . Not, non-existence, death, மரணம். (p.) 2. The root of one of the negative symbolic verbs, (see அல்) expressive of total or exclusive negation of the thing or quality--the opposite of உள். Sometimes in poetry it stands as a contraction of இல்லை. இற்றிறம்பிலர். They fail not in the performance of domestic duties; [ex இல், house; திறம்பு, failure; இலர், who are not.] இணையில்நெஞ்சமே. O! incomparable mind; O! mind debased beyond comparison. இலி, s. A person, or thing possessed of nothing. பிறப்பிலி, s. He who is without birth--the Supreme Being, கடவுள். 2. Siva, சிவன். (p.) இறையிலி, s. He who is exempt from taxes; [ex இறை, tribute; இல், not; இ, affix.] இந்தநிலமிறையிலி. This field is not taxed. இல்பொருள், s. An impossibility, an absurdity, இல்லாதபொருள். இல்பொருளுவமம்--இல்லுவமை, s. [in rhetoric.] Comparison with a thing that does not exist, உவமையணியி லொன்று--as எல்லாக்கமலத்தொழிலுந்திரண்டொ ன்றின் வில்லேர்புருவத்துவேனெடுங்கணல்லாண் முகம்போலும், the beauty of the face of the damsel whose eyes resemble a lance, and brow, a bow, is equal to the aggregate beauty of all lotuses. இல்லாதபொய், s. Downright lie, முழுப்பொய். இல்லாதவன், neg. appel. noun. One utterly destitute. இல்லாததும்பொல்லாதுஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To tell lies and speak evil of one. இல்லாமல், ver. part. Without. இல்லாமற்போனால், If not, otherwise. இல்லாமலிருக்க, inf. To be without, be wanting, be absent. இல்லாமை, neg. v. noun. Absence, destitution, privation, இன்மை. 2. Poverty, want, தரித்திரம். இல்லார்--இல்லோர், s. The poor, the destitute, those who are in want, தரித்திரர். இல்லெனல், v. noun. Death, extinction, சாதல். 2. Denying, இல்லையென் றசொல்லல். இல்லை, s. Negation, இன்மை. 2. A defective verb implying absolute negation, added to nouns, pronouns, verbs or participles. 3. Death, extinction of life, சாதல். இல்லையாகியவென்மகற்காண்பன். I shall see my deceased son. இல்லையாகில்--இல்லையென்கில்--இல்லையெ ன்றால். If not, or else, otherwise. வருகிறையோ இல்லையோ? Will you come or not? ஒருக்காலுமில்லை. Never. இதுவுமில்லை--அதுவுமில்லை--இரண்டுமில்லை. Neither this nor that, neither of the two. ஒற்றுமில்லை. Nothing. துப்புறவில்லை--பரிச்சேதமில்லை. Not at all. அளவில்லை. Beyond measure, immeasurable. இன்னதென்றில்லை. It is not described what it is, no matter what. இவ்வளவென்றில்லை. It is unascertained, not estimated, not measured. இல்வழக்கு, s. Unjust lawsuit, பொய்வழக்கு. எண்ணில்காலம், s. Incalculable time. அருளிலார், s. Those devoid of benevolence. இன்றி, v. part. from the root இல். Without. தாமதமின்றி. Without delay. ஒருபிரயாசமுமின்றி. Without labor, or difficulty. பாவமின்றிநடக்கிறது அரிது. It is difficult to live without sinning. 23)

uruvkm (p. 65) --உருவகவணி, s. [in rhetoric.] Identification of the objects of comparison, metaphor in general, comprising many species, உவமானஉவமேயங்களையொற் றுமைப்படக்கூறுகை. See உரூபகம். உருவகப்படுத்த, inf. To speak metaphorically. உருவகவுருவகம், s. A double metaphor--as, கன்னிதன்கொங்கைக்குவடாங்க டாக்களிற்றை, the elephant-mountain-breast of the damsel. 32)

uruvm (p. 65) s. Shape, form, figure, likeness, features, gestures, &c., வடிவம். 2. Beauty, symmetry, அழகு. 3. Image, idol, statue, சொரூபம். 4. Body, human or other, உடல். 5. (p.) Color, good color, நிறம். உருவத்தார்புனையவந்தவொண்டொடி. Adorned with bracelets, the damsel came to invest her lover with a beautiful garland. (நைட.) உருவங்காட்டி, s. A glass, mirror, looking glass. உருவசாத்திரம், s. The knowledge of the shape, feature, lines, &c., of the human body, including palmistry and physiognomy, considered as indicating the moral and mental characteristics of the individual. See கலைஞானம். உருவமாற, inf. To be transformed. உருவமெடுக்க, inf. To assume a form--as a deity, வடிவமெடுக்க. 35)

uḷru (p. 67) --உளர், கிறேன், உளர்ந்தேன், வேன், உளர, v. a. To adjust or clean feathers with the beak--as birds, சிறகுகோத. 2. To shake the wings and feathers, சிறகுதற. 3. To shake off, scatter, sprinkle, strew, சிந்த. (நிகண்டு.) 4. To try, tune, or play on a lute, &c., with the fingers, யாழினரம்புதடவ. (p.) 5. v. n. To whirl about, whiffle--as wind, காற் றுளர. 6. [prov.] To turn about or be loose --as a pin, or screw, சுழல. 7. [vul.] To stir, move either bodily or mentally, அசைய. நரம்புளர்ந்தமுதமூறுமங்கையர்பாடல். The singing of the damsels who sweetly played on the lute-- (நைட.) இவ்வளவுசொல்லியுஞ்சற்றுமுளருகிறானில்லை.... Though I have said so much, he is not yet moved. சிறையுளர்ந்தயல்சூழ். (Birds) that flock in the neighborhood adjusting their feathers with the beak-உளர்ச்சி, v. noun. Whirling, சுழற்சி. உளர்வு, v. noun. Whirling, whiffling, moving, stirring, turning, being loose, சுழற்சி. 2. Fluctuation, wavering, உளர்கை. 36)

eccil (p. 73) s. Remains, or refuse of food, crumbs, orts (deemed impure), சேஷம். 2. Any thing defiled by contact with the mouth, saliva, &c., மிச்சில்; [ex எஞ்சு.] எச்சிற்கையாற்காக்கையுமோட்டான். He will not even scare away a crow with his hand while eating, lest any grain of rice fall thereby. எச்சிலாக்க--எச்சிற்படுத்த, inf. To defile food or any thing, by bringing it into contact with the mouth; to defile food by the hand, or spoon in feeding, உச்சிட்டப்படுத்த. 2. To deflour a woman, deprive a damsel of her virginity, either by force or with consent, கன்னிமைகெடுக்க. எச்சிலார், s. Low-caste people, இழிஞர். (p.) எச்சிலிலை--எச்சிற்கல்லை, s. The leaf on which one has eaten. எச்சிலுமிய--எச்சிலுமிழ--எச்சில் துப்ப, inf. To spit. (c.) எச்சில்வாய், s. Mouth unwashed after eating, கழுவாதவாய். எச்சிற்கலக்க, inf. To eat the food left by the bridegroom--as a Hindu bride does on the occasion of her marriage. 2. To eat the food left by others--as friends. எச்சிற்கலப்பு, s. The above ceremony. எச்சிற்காறியுமிழ், inf. To force up the phlegm and spit it out. எச்சிற்கிதம்பாட, inf. To assent to what is wrong from an unworthy motive. எச்சிற்குழி, s. A cavity in a court-yard, used as a spittoon, எச்சில் போடுங்குழி. எச்சிற்பட, inf. To become defiled--as food, &c., by saliva, or contact with the mouth. எச்சிற்பருக்கை, s. Grains of rice fallen while eating, சிந்திக்கிடக்குஞ்சோறு. எச்சிற்பேய், s. A diminutive demon exceedingly voracious, ஓர்பிசாசம். 2. A person very fond of dainties, பெ ருந்தீனிக்காரன். எச்சிற்றழும்பு--எச்சிற்றேமல், s. A kind of ring-worm supposed to be induced by contact with the saliva of others, தழுதணை. எச்சின்மாற்ற, inf. To purify a place after eating by smearing it anew with cowdung. கண்ணெச்சில், s. Evil imagined to be caused by other people's eyes. கண்ணெச்சிற்கழிக்க, inf. To perform a ceremony for the removal of the imagined inauspicious effect of evil eyes. (நைட.) 25)

ēmā (p. 79) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To be proud, haughty, inflated, selfconceited, sprightly; to strut, to be stiff in gait, செருக்குற. 2. to be exhilerated, to be overjoyed, to exult, to be in an extacy, to experience the highest delight, மிகக் களிக்க. (p.) ஏமாந்தபோழ்தின். When exalted in prosperity. (நாலடி.) எனக்கெனக்கென்றென்றேமாந்திருந்தகாவலரைநோ க்கி. Addressing the kings who were greatly elated. each one hoping to get the damsel. (பாரத.) ஏமாந்தகொங்கை, s. Full, prominent breasts. ஏமாப்பு, v. noun. Pride, self-conceit, insolence, elation, செருக்கு. 2. Exhileration, spiritual joy, highest happiness, மிகக்களிப்பு. 3. A safe-guard, defence, security, காவல். 4. Thought, intention, கருத்து. (p.) எழுமையுமேமாப்புடைத்து. It will prove a safe-guard throughout the seven births. (குறள். 4.) ஏமாப்புற, inf. To be elated, proud, செருக்கடைய. 34)

aiym (p. 80) s. Doubt, hesitation, uncertainty, indecision, suspense, scepticism, terms or probability, possibility, and any thing short of positive certainty are included, சந்தேகம். 2. (p.) Alms, charity, பிச்சை. 3. A beggar's vessel or shell, இரப்போர்கலம். 4. Phlegm--one of the humors of the body, சிலேட்டுமம். 5. Doubt, surprise, &c.--as one of the துறை, அகப்பொருட்டுறையினொன்று-as, போதோவிசும்போபுனலோபணிகளது பதியோ யா தோவறிகுவதேதுமரிது, whether the place the damsel occupies is a lotus flower, the world of the gods, water, or the world of serpents, it is difficult to determine. ஐயம்புகினுஞ் செய்வினைசெய். Though you go abegging, perform your duties. (ஔ வை.) ஐயகணசூலை, s. An arthritic disease arising from phlegm and heat, ஆறுசூலையிலொன்று. ஐயக்காட்சி, s. An object of subject exciting doubt, indistinct perception, problematical or hypothetical terms, அதுவோவிதுவோவெனக்காண்கை. (See காட்சி.) 2. Doubt, சந்தேகம். ஐயக்காரன், s. A beggar, a mendicant, பிச்சைக்காரன். ஐயக்கிளவி, s. Terms or particles of doubt or uncertainty, commonly found in interrogative expressions, ஐய மொழி--such as ஆ, ஏ, ஓ, கொல், யா, &c. ஐயநாடி, s. One of the three states of the pulse--that in which the phlegmatic humor is supposed to be prevalent in the system, சிலேட்டுமநாடி. See நாடி. ஐயப்பட, inf. To doubt, hesitate. ஐயப்படாமை, neg. v. noun. Freedom from doubt and fear, certainty, undauntedness, சந்தேகங்கொள்ளாமை. 2. One of the eight அறத்துறுப்பு. See உறுப்பு. ஐயப்பாடு, s. Doubt, uncertainty, indecision, apprehension, suspense, சந் தேகம். ஐயமறுக்க, inf. One of the five kinds of questions which are proposed to remove doubt from the mind, சந்தேக நிவர்த்திசெய்ய. ஐயமிட, inf. To give alms, பிச் சையிட. ஐயமிட்டுண். Give alms before you eat. ஐயமுற, inf. To doubt, சந்தேகம டைய. ஐயமேலிட, inf. To be in a great doubt, சந்தேகமதிகரிக்க. 2. To have the rattles in the throat--as a dying person, சிலேட்டுமமேலிட. ஐயவணி, s. A figure in rhetoric-as where doubt is entertained as to whether a thing which bears analogy to another is identical with or distinct from it--as தாதளவிவண்டுதடுமாறுந்தாமரைகொ ல் மாதர்விழியுலவும் வாண்முகங்கொல். I doubt whether it is the face of a woman or a lotus flower, since it resembles so much the latter. ஐயவதிசயம், s. A figure in rhetoric, ஓரலங்காரம். ஐயவிலக்கு, s. A figure in rhetoric, ஓரலங்காரம். ஐயவும்மை, s. A particle showing uncertainty, doubt. See உம். ஐயவுவமை, s. A figure in rhetoric, ஓரலங்காரம். ஐயுற, inf. To doubt, hesitate, to be undecided, to suspect, to be in suspense, சந்தேகமடைய. சக்கரஞ்சுற்றுகின்றமைகண்டையுற்று. Wondering at the sight of the whirling discus. பக்கத்தார்யாரையுமையுறுதல். Suspecting all neighbors. (நீதிநெறி.) ஐயுறல்--ஐயுறவு, v. noun. Doubting, apprehension, suspicion, சந்தேகம். ஐயுறுத்த, inf. To cause or excite doubt, to induce apprehension, ஐயமுறுத்த. 22)

oṉṟu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஒன்றினேன், வேன், ஒன்ற. v. n. To unite, coalesce, knit or grow together--as broken parts, two trees, &c.; to become one, to join, combine, இணைய. 2. To be engaged, be intent, &c. on an object, ஒன்றுபட. 3. To agree, suit, be agreeable, பொருந்த. 4. To copulate, புணர. ஒன்றவில்லை. It is not convenient. 2. They are not fit. 3. (They) (the things or parts) are not united, not joined well, &c. தேகத்தொன்றுநோய். Disease which befalls the body. (வைராக்கிய.) ஊழொன்றியிருப்பின். If destiny favor-ஒன்றப்பார்க்க, inf. To unite severed parts--as a magician by looking at them, lit. to look them into one, பொ ருந்தப்பார்க்க. 2. To join things to see if they fit or agree--as machinery, இசைக்க. ஒன்றாதவஞ்சித்தளை, s. See தளை. ஒன்றார்--ஒன்னாதார்--ஒன்னார், s. Foes, unfriendly persons. (p.) ஒன்றுகுடி, s. A family or person living in another's house, garden, &c. See ஒட்டுக்குடி and ஒதுக்குக்குடி. ஒன்றுகூட்டு, s. Concord, harmony, living on terms of friendship, ஒரு கூட்டு. ஒன்றுகூட்டாயிருக்க, inf. To be closely united, be in harmony, &c. ஒன்றுநர், s. Friends, relations, ந ண்பர். (p.) ஓ. The eleventh vowel, ஓகாரம். 2. A particle, இடைச்சொல். It has various uses; in நன்னூல், eight different meanings are given to it. (a) ஒழியிசை, a mark of ellipsis denoting the omission of a counter-part to what is expressed--as கொள லோகொண்டான், true he has obtained his object (but he will not prosper by it). (b) வினா, interrogatives--as சாத்தனோவந்தான், is it Sattan that came? (c) சிறப்பு, speciality, particularity, &c., an interjection of surprise. This is two-fold. 1. உயர்வுசிறப் பு, relating to objects of superiority, preeminence, &c.--as ஓஒ பெரியன், heigh day! he is an illustrious person. 2. இழிவுசிறப்பு, relating to objects of inferiority, baseness, &c.--as ஓஒ கொடியன், Oh! he is a cruel wretch. (d) எதிர்மறை, negation--as யானோ செய்வேன், will I do it? implying I will not. (e) தெரிநிலை, ascertainment, clear perception, appeal to the hearer, &c.-as ஆணோஅதுவுமன்றுபெண்ணோஅதுவுமன்று, it is neither male nor female. (f) கழிவு, bereavement, an interjection of pity--as ஓஒ தமக் கோருறுதியுணராரோ, alas, alas, they have found no way of salvation. (g) அசைநிலை, expletive--as காணியவம்மினோ, come let us see. (h) பிரிநிலை, distinguishing, marking-as அவனோகொண்டான், it was he who bought it. In addition to these it also serves to express doubt--as நீனிறமுகிலோபசியசைவல மோநெடுந்திரைகொழித்ததெள்ளறலோ, is the hair of the damsel analogous to the blue clouds, to the green moss, or the black sand on the shore drifted by the billows (நைட); அதென்னவோதெரியாது, What that can be I know not.

olku (p. 83) கிறது, ஒல்கினது, ம், ஒல்க, v. n. To become reduced, thin, slender, emaciated, to grow small, diminish, தளர. 2. To be subject to, to submit, be repressed, be contained, கீழ்ப்படிய. 3. To grow weak, faint, reduced or broken in mind, to pine, to be dejected, disheartened, குழைய. 4. To shrink from, be deficient, to fail in the performance of duties, குறைய. 5. To coil up, shrivel, contract as an elastic body, சுருங்க. 6. To waver, shake, &c., from weakness, or from being over-burdened, to be flexible, துவள. (p.) ஒல்காதார்வாய்விட்டுலம்புப. Those of unrestrained passions chatter and boast. (நீதி நெறி.) ஒல்குதேவியைத்தெளித்தொருப்படுத்தி. Consoling his distressed wife and prevailing upon her to consent to (the enterprise)-(ஸ்காந்.) ஒல்குமிடைநவ்வியும். The deer-like (damsel) having a slender waist-- (பாரத.) சிதைவிடத்தொல்காருரவோர். The wise will not be discouraged in adversity. (குறள்.) வல்லியினொல்கி. Being pliant (when agitated) as a creeper-ஒல்கல், v. noun. The state of fading or pining, குழைதல். 2. Slackness, தளர்தல். 3. oẕuku (p. 84) கிறது, ஒழுகினது, ம், ஒழுக, v. n. To flow, நீர்முதலியவோட. 2. To go, pass, walk, செல்ல. 3. To act, behave, maintain a course of conduct, act according to rule, to behave well, நெறிப்படிநடக்க. 4. To be long, நீள. (p.) 5. To leak, drop as water, fall by drops, trickle down, drip, drop through, to be shed, தொளைவழி யாயொழுக. ஒழுகுபொற்கொடிமூக்கு. The nose of the damsel who resembles a beautiful long creeper. (நைட.) ஒழுகொளிவிரிக்குங்கதிர்மணி. The radiant gem which diffuses flowing light. கூற்றமேயில்லத்திருந்தொழுகாப்பெண். But an unfaithful wife is to the household as death. பன்மார்புசேர்ந்தொழுகுவார். Those who habituate themselves to the embraces of many-- (நாலடி.) அதிரசமொழுகுங்கனிகள். Fruits flowing with much honey. குடமொழுகுகிறது. The vessel leaks. ஒழுகிசை, s. A flowing kind of melody in poetry in which nothing discordant occurs, பாவினோசையுளொன்று. ஒழுகிசைச்செப்பல், s. A poem consisting of வெண்சீர்வெண்டளை and இய ற்சீர்வெண்டளை. ஒழுகிசையகவல், s. A kind of அகவல் verse composed of நேரொன்றாசிரிய த்தளை and நிரையொன்றாசிரியத்தளை. ஒழுகுவண்ணம், s. A cadence which flows in an easy and pleasing style, ஓர்சந்தம். ஒழுகல், v. noun. Flowing. 2. Leaking, dropping, a leak. 3. Behavior. 4. Length. 5. Height. ஒழுகலான், appel. n. He who does not conduct himself virtuously (நீதிநெறி.) வாய்நீரொழுகல், v. noun. Drivelling. ஒழுக்கு, v. noun. Leaking, dropping, dripping, ஒழுகுகை. 2. Flowing, flow, நீர்முதலியவோடுகை. 3. The passing of urine in drops. ஒழுக்குக்குவைத்தசட்டிபோல். Like a vessel set to catch the water from a leak-spoken of one supported at the expense and pleasure of another. ஒழுக்குமாற்ற, inf. [prov.] To stop leak. ஒழுக்குவிழ, inf. To drop as water from a leak, to leak. ஒழுக்கெறும்பு, s. A species of large black ants which follow one another in a train. 8)

ōccu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓச்சினேன், வேன், ஓச்ச, v. a. To cast away, throw, discharge a weapon, bow, &c., எறிய. 2. To cause to go, to ride, govern, செலுத்த. 3. To drive away, chase, scare away, ஓட்ட. 4.
