இருள்
iruḷ (p. 51) --இருளு, கிறது--இருண் டது--இருளும்--இருள, v. n. To become dark --as clouds before rain, to darken, இருட்ட. 2. To grow dark--as at the close of the day; to become obscure--as a heavenly or luminous body, மங்க. 3. To become dark or dim in color, ஒளிமழுங்க. 4. To become obscure or dark--as when over-spread with clouds, இருப்பட. 5. To darken or be dark, as the mind, be in ignorance, illusion, doubt, &c., மருள. மனமிருண்டுபோயிற்று. கருகு
kruku (p. 96) கிறேன், கருகினேன், வேன், கருக, v. n. To be scorched, scarred, to darken, blacken by fire or the sun, to be tanned--as the countenance; to turn brown and sickly--as growing corn, &c.; to wither from want of water, to be burnt to tinder. சிரங்குகருகிப்போயிற்று. The itch is cured (dried, &c.). கொப்புளங்கருகிப்போயிற்று. The pustule is dried up. மருந்தெண்ணெய்கருகிப்போயிற்று. The medicinal oil is burnt. பயறுகருகிப்போயிற்று. The pulse is burnt in parching. கருகுமாலை, s. The dim evening twilight, மாலைவெளிச்சம். பல்லுக்கருக, inf. To turn dark as the teeth of a person on his death-bed-an indication of approaching death. முகங்கருக, inf. To darken--as the countenance from fear, anger, &c. மனங்கருக, inf. To be displeased, to have the affection alienated. உதடுகருக, inf. To become dried --as the lip. பயிர்கருக, inf. To become sickly --as growing corn. பொரியல்கருக, inf. To be burnt-as dried food. ஈரற்கருக, inf. To be smitten with anguish, fear, shame, &c. கருகல், s. Rice, curry, &c., burnt in cooking, கரிந்தது. 2. Betel leaves, grain or other vegetation scorched and blackened by the sun, கருகிப்போனது. 3. Obscurity in language, abstruseness, மறைபொருளானது. 4. Dimness of the evening twilight, dusk, மாலைவெளிச்சம். 5. v. noun. Being partially charred, or scorched, scarred, embrowned, tanned, தீதல். கருகலானபொரியல், s. A burnt stew or fry. கருகல்வெற்றிலை, s. கருக்கு
krukku (p. 96) கிறேன், கருக்கினேன் வே ன், கருக்க v. a. To burn, to tinder, கருகச் செய்ய. 2. To scorch, toast, fry, parch, to imbrown or darken by heat, to tan கறுப் போடவாட்ட, 3. To scorch corn; to tan the countenance, referring to the action of the sun, &c., தீக்க. 4. [vul.] To harass by rebukes, திட்ட. சாராயமீரலைக்கருக்கிப்போடும். Ardent spirits consume the liver. ஆளைக்கருக்கிப்போட்டார்கள். They have greatly harassed the person by reproofs. பத்தியத்துக்குகருக்கிக்கொடுக்க, inf. That which is reprobate, refuse, rejected, the worst, lowest, vilest, மிகக்கெட்டது. கழிகெட்டவன், s. [prov.] A reprobate fellow, a vile wretch, மிகவுங்கெட்ட வன். கழிபிறப்பு, s. The birth preceding the present, முற்பிறப்பு. (p.) கழியுடல், s. A skeleton, ஊன்க ழிந்தவுடல். (p.) வாழ்நாட்கழிய, inf. To pass, as one's lifetime. ஏழரைகழிய, inf. A widow, a woman who has lost her marriage symbol. கழிச்சல், v. noun. Flux, looseness, கழிதல். 2. [vul.] Cholera, epidemical flux, பேதியாதல். கிராணிக்கழிச்சல், v. noun. A continued looseness. இரத்தக்கழிச்சல், v. noun. The bloody flux. கழிதல், v. noun. Passing, கடத்தல். 2. Dying, சாதல். 3. Walking, நடத்தல். 4. Abundance,மிகுதி. கழியல், v. noun. Departing, passing, separating, கழிதல். 2. Any thing rejected, கழிக்கப்பட்டது. கழிவு, v. noun. Passing, leaving, separating from, discharge--from the bowels, a sore, &c., கழிகை. 2. Copiousness, abundance, excess, superfluity, intensity, surplus, redundancy, மிகுதி. 3. Things ejected or left, refuse, leavings, dross, scoria, கழிகடை. 4. Exception, release, exemption, rejection, elimination, நீங்குகை. 5. [in arithmetic.] Subtraction, கழிப்புக்கணக்கு. 6. Deduction, abatement, defalcation, discount, premium, allowance, தள்ளுபிடி. 7. Remainder in arithmetic, சேஷம். 8. [in logic.] Inference by implication of opposite, as when it is said of two persons, that one is enlightened by virtuous deeds, we infer that the other is darkened by the retributions of vice; or in a case of robbery between two-that one is honest, that the other is the thief, பாரிசேஷம். 9. That which is secondary, inferior, any thing bad or inferior in quality, base, vile, இழிவு. கழிவில்லை. There is none rejected. 2. There is no abatement, deduction, discount, &c. கழிவானசரக்கு, s. kuṟṟm (p. 132) s. Fault; moral or physical imperfection, blemish, defect, deformity. பி ழை. 2. Crime, misdemeanor, guilt, தீங்கு. 3. Impurity; ceremonial or moral defilement--as cause of offence to the deity, of blight to plants, &c., சூதகம். 4. Reproach, stigma, charge, accusation, blame, குறை. 5. Amercement, mulct, fine, அபராதம். 6. (சது.) Sickness, நோய். முக்குற்றம், s. The three kinds of evil, incident to the soul in connexion with births, as darkening the understanding and leading to sin. 1. காமம், sexual desire, lust. 2. வெகுளி, anger. 3. மயக்கம், bewilderment, mental illusion. யாக்கைக்குற்றம், s. The five defects of the body; 1. கொட்டாவி, yawning. 2. நெட்டை, snapping the joints. 3. குறுகு றுப்பு, snoring. 4. கூன்கிடை, lying shrunk up. 5. நட்டுவிழல், nodding. அஷ்டகுற்றம், s. The eight imperfections of creatures. 1. ஞானாவரணியம், ignorance, or want of wisdom. 2. தரி சனாவரணியம், defective perception. 3. வேதநீயம், comprehensibleness. 4. மோக நீயம். subjection to the passions. 5. ஆயு, age, limited duration. 6. நாமம், having a name or describableness. 7. கோத்திரம், parentage, descent. 8. அந்தராயம். liability to impediments and accidents. The opposite of these are peculiar to the deity. See எண்குணம் under குணம். நூற்குற்றம், s. The ten faults or defects in a literary composition. 1. குன்றக்கூறல், a partial statement--saying too little. 2. மிகைபடக்கூறல், redundancy-saying too much. 3. கூறியதுகூறல், tautology--repetition. 4. மாறுகொளக்கூறல், inconsistency--contradictory statements. 5. வழூஉச்சொற்புணர்த்தல், the employment of improper or inappropriate words and terms. 6. மயங்கவைத்தல், obscurity, mystification. 7. வெற்றெனத்தொடுத்தல், emptiness, barrenness. 8.மற்றொன்றுவிரித்தல், digression--introducing another subject. 9. சென்றுதேய்ந்திறுதல், gradual loss of vigor and tone. 1. நின்றுபயனின்மை, useless statements; verbosity; bombast. இமைக்குற்றங் கண்ணுக்குத்தெரியாது. The eye does not see the defect of the eyelashes; i. e. one's own errors, and those of his family and friends, are unnoticed. குற்றங்கடிய, inf. To avoid guilt. குற்றங்களைய, inf. To free from errors. குற்றங்காட்ட, inf. To expose faults. குற்றங்காண, inf. To find fault. 2. To blame, to be blameable, &c. குற்றஞ்சாட்ட--குற்றஞ்சுமத்த--குற் றப்படுத்த--குற்றமேற்ற, inf. To conviet, charge with a fault or crime; to accuse. அவன்மேற்குற்றஞ்சுமத்து. He has been found guilty. குற்றஞ்சாராதவன், s. An innocent man. குற்றஞ்செய்ய--குற்றம்பண்ண, inf. To commit a fault; to perpetrate a crime; to do wrong, &c. குற்றஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To accuse, criminate, blame, censure, charge with fault; to impeach. 2. To object, gainsay. 3. To criticize; to be hypercritical, censorious, captious; to expose faults. குற்றத்தைமறைக்க, inf. To deny a crime; to hide a fault. குற்றந்தீர்க்க--குற்றம்பரிகரிக்க, inf. To correct faults, to free from faults; to expurgate, exculpate, absolve. குற்றந்தெரிக்க, inf. To exhibit faults; to criticize, to sift--as a literary production. குற்றப்பட, inf. To be in fault; to be found guilty, criminal, blameable. குற்றப்பாடு, v. noun. The state of being in fault; accusation, imputation. குற்றம்பார்க்க--குற்றம்பிடிக்க, inf. To find fault, to be censorious. குற்றம்பார்க்கிற்சுற்றமில்லை. Censoriousness destroys friendship. குற்றமில்லான்--குற்றங்களில்லான், s. Argha--as an immaculate being, அருகன். 2. Any holy being; an innocent person. குற்றமிறுக்க, inf. To pay a fine. குற்றம்பாராட்ட, inf. To exaggerate one's faults; to magnify guilt; to dwell too much upon one's faults. குற்றம்பொறுக்க, inf. To pardon, to forgive, to bear with faults. குற்றம்போட, inf. To impose a fine; to mulct. குற்றம்வாங்க, inf. To impose a fine. குற்றவாளி, s. A criminal, a malefactor, a culprit. 2. திரோதம்
tirōtam (p. 241) --திரோதயம், s. Obscuration or darkening of the understanding, &c., as திரோதானம். திரோதசத்தி--திரோதாயி--திரோதாயி சத்தி--திரோதானசத்தி, s. The female energy of the deity, which is operative in veiling the understanding, and leading the soul to the performance of various actions; and thus enabling it to work itself clear from moral evil, and effect its salvation. 14) *

Siva, as the azurenecked, சிவன். நீலகண்டி, s. One of four poisonous fangs of a snake. See பல். 2. [fem.] A cruel woman, பொல்லாதவள். நீலகாசம்--நீலமணிகாசம், s. A disease of the eyes, ஓர்நேத்திரகாசம். நீலகிரி, s. The Neilgherrie mountains, in the Coimbatore district, நீலகிரிமலை. 2. One of the eight ranges of mountains dividing the words into nine parts, immediately north of Ilavaratha, or the central division, அஷ்டகிரியிலொன்று. 3. The western mountains behind which the sun is supposed to go round. See கிரி. நீலக்கட்டி, s. Lumps of blue coloring matter made from the indigo plant. நீலக்கண்ணாடி, s. Blue spectacles. நீலக்கத்தரி--நீலவழுதலை, s. A brinjal of a bluish caste. See கத்தரி. நீலக்கல், s. A precious stone, sapphire. நீலக்காக்கட்டான், s. A plant, ஓர்பூடு. நீலக்காலி, s. The indigo plant, as yielding blue dye, as அவுரி. நீலங்கட்ட, inf. To tie up a cloth, except the borders, corners, &c., and dip it in dye, நீலந்தீர. 2. To forge a great lie, பெரும்பொய்கூற. நீலங்கட்டுப்படப்பேசுகிறான். He lies greatly as he speaks. நீலச்சால், s. A blue dye-pot, a jar used in making indigo or dyeing with indigo. நீலந்தீர--நீலந்தோய்க்க, inf. To dye or tinge with blue. நீலபாஷாணம், s. A kind of prepared arsenic. நீலபுஷ்பம், s. A plant, விஷ்ணுகரந்தை. 2. A tree, எட்டிமரம். நீலப்புகார், s. Faint blue in staining cloth. நீலப்புடவை, s. Blue cloth, காங்கு. நீலமணி, s. Sapphire, as நீலக்கல். 2. The pupil of the eye, கண்ணிற்கருமணி. நீலமெடுக்க, inf. To make blue from the Indigo plant. நீலமேனியன், s. Vishnu, விஷ்ணு. நீலம்பற்றவைக்க, inf. To fix the blue i. e. to fabricate a story; said to be necessary for a washerman that the cloths may take the color. நீலம்பாரிக்க, inf. To become bluish as the face, eyes of teeth by poisonous bites; a part hurt by a blow; or an infant by disease, &c., சரீரம்நீலநிறமாக. 2. To be darkened, as the earth in an eclipse caused by the serpent Raku, an eclipse by the other serpent being red. நீலராசாவர்த்தம், s. An inferior kind of diamond which is supposed to ensure good luck to kings who have it, See இராசாவர்த்தம். நீலருத்திரன், s. The azure colored Rudra, the third of the Hindu Triad, ஒருருத்திரன். நீலலோகிதன், s. One of the eleven Rudras. See உருத்திரர். நீலவண்ணன், s. A cloth dyer, சா யக்காரன். நீலவண்ணான், s. A cloth dyer, சா யக்காரன். நீலவருணம், s. Blue dye, நீலநிறம். 2. One of the seven classes of clouds. See மேகம். நீலவழுதலை, s. The purple brinjal. See நீலக்கத்தரி. நீலன், s. Saturn, சனி. 2. One of the monkey chiefs in Rama's army, ஓர்வானரப்படைத்தலைவன். 3. Name of a king, ஓரரசன். 4. A cruel, barbarous man, கொடியன். 5. A merchant of this name, who was killed by நீலி, a devil in the shape of his wife, ஓர்வணிகன். நீலாகாயம், s. The azure sky; [ex ஆ காயம். நீலாஞ்சனம், s. Sulphate of copper, blue vitriol, துருசி. நீலாஞ்சனக்கல், s. Sulphuret of antimony. நீலாம்பரன், s. Balab'hadra, a form of Siva, பலபத்திரன். நீலோற்பலம், s. pañca (p. 290) --பஞ்சம், adj. Five-fold, ஐந்து. W. p. 493. PANCHAT or PANCHAN. பஞ்சகச்சஞ்சொருக, inf. To tuck up the cloth in five ways. See சொருகு, v. பஞ்சகச்சாயம், s. Five kinds of cakes. பஞ்சகதி, s. The five paces of the horse. See துரககதி. பஞ்சகந்தம், s. The five aromatics. See கந்தம். பஞ்சகம், s. Any thing of five parts. பஞ்சகம்மாளர், s. [also பஞ்சாளர்.] The five castes of mechanics. See கம்மாளர், under கம். பஞ்சகர்த்தாக்கள், s. The five deities, or forms of deity performing operations for the benefit of souls. 1. பிரமா, creator, or evolver of the universe; 2. விட்டுணு, preserver, who furnishes each soul with its allotted portion of jois, and sorrows, as the results of former actions; 3. உருத்திரன், destroyer, reducing souls and worlds to their primitive elements; 4. மகேசுரன், obscurer, darkening the understanding, that the soul may act, and work off its accumulation of moral evil, so as to become ripe for salvation; 5. சதாசிவன், enlightener of illuminator, who imparts divine grace, and prepares the soul for emancipation, and union with the deity. See பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், under கிருத்தியம். பஞ்சகலாத்தானங்கள், s. The five parts of the body touched by the gurus in giving தீட்சை. பஞ்சகலை, s. The five developments of the soul in its beatification are; நிவிர்தி, பிரதிஷ்டை, வித்தை, சாந்தி,சாந்தியாதீதம். (தத்துவ.) பஞ்சகல்யாணி, s. A horse whose feet and forehead are white. See கலியாணி. பஞ்சகன்னியர், s. The five famous women worshipped by females, as able to confer benefits. See கன்னிகை. பஞ்சகாவியம், s. The five ancient classic poems. See காவியம். பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், s. The five operations performed by five பஞசகர்த்தாக்கள். See ஐந் தொழில், கிருத்தியம். பஞ்சகுரோசஎல்லை, s. The distance of five calls of குரோசம், around Benares, within which no foreign religionist, or other unclean person, should come. பஞ்சகோசம், s. The five sheaths of the soul. See கோசம். பஞ்சகோணம், s. A pentagon. See ஐங்கோணம். பஞ்சகோலம், s. The mixture of five spices, சுக்கு, திப்பிலி, திப்பிலிமூலம், செவ்வியம், and சித்திரமூலம்; [ex Kola. pepper.] பஞ்சகௌடம், s. The five divisions of Bengal or the கௌடம் country. See கௌடம். பஞ்சகௌவியம், The five products of the cow, used in ceremonial purifications, viz. milk, curds, ghee, urine and dung, ஆனிடத்தைந்து. பஞ்சகௌவியம்கூட்டித்தெளித்தல். Mixing the five ingredients and sprinkling the the floor, &c.--Note. The same mixture is administered to the woman after child-birth; also sprinkled on the child at the time of purification. பஞ்சகொ?வியப்பிராசினம். Eating the above compound as a purification. பஞ்சசத்தி, s. The five saktis. See சத்தி. பஞ்சசயனம், s. The five kinds of beds. See சயனம். பஞ்சசிகை, s. The five parts of the body which the Shastras forbid to be shaved; the crown of the head, the two eye-brows, and the arms from the elbow to the hand. பஞ்சசுத்தி, s. The five purifications. See சுத்தி. பஞ்சணை, s. [com. for பஞ்சசயனம்.] The five kinds of mattresses, filled with silk-cotton, red cotton, white cotton, hair, or feathers. 2. See பஞ்சு. பஞ்சதந்திரம், s. [in politics.] The five means of accomplishing one's object; 1. மித்திரபேதம், sowing discord among friends; 2. சுகிர்லாபம், associating with equals; 3. சக்திவிக்கிரகம், associating with a foe and ruining him; 4. அர்த்தநாசம், spending one's property to gain an object; 5. அசம்பிரெட்சியம், acting without inquiry, examination, &c. பஞ்சதந்திரக்கதை, s. Panchatantra. பஞ்சதம்--பஞ்சதை, s. Death, dissolution og the five elements of whose aggregate the body consists, மரணம். பஞ்சதரு--பஞ்சதாரு, s. The five trees in Swerga. Sugar, சருக்கரை. பஞ்சதிரவிடம், s. The five provinces of Southern India. See திராவிடம். பஞ்சதிரவியம், s. The five productions of the cow used in purification. See கௌவியம். பஞ்சநகம், s. An elephant. 2. A tortoise, ஆமை. W. p. 493. PANCHANAKHA. பஞ்சநகக்கூர்மையோன், s. A tortoise as having five divisions in its claws. பஞ்சநதி, s. The Punjaub having five rivers, as famous for sacred bathing. பஞ்சநிம்பம், s. The five parts of the Neem, or Margosa tree; the flowers fruit, leaves, bark and root; [ex நிம்பம், margosa.] பஞ்சபட்சி, s. The five birds for augury. See பஞ்சபட்சிக்காதல், under காதல். --The letters, அ, இ, உ, எ, and ஒ, are applied to the birds, and the following accidents, உண்டி, feeding, நடை, walking, அரசு, governing, தூக்கம், sleeping, and சாவு; dying. பஞ்சபட்சிக்காதல், s. A treatise on augury. பஞ்சபட்சிவேளை, s. Augury from the eating, sleeping, walking, governing and dying of the five birds, between the full and the new moon. 2. An auspicious hour, ascertained by augury. பஞ்சபர்வங்கள், s. Five religious ceremonial days in each fortnight. பஞ்சபாணம், s. [alsoஐங்கணை.] The five arrows of Kama consisting of five kinds of flowers; வனசம், lotus; 2. குதம், mango; 3. அசோகு, ashoka; 4. முல்லை, jasmine; 5. நீலம், blue water lily. பஞ்சபாணன், s. A kind of vessel of five plates collectively, or made of five metals, used by advanced religionists, to hold water for purification, பஞ்சலோக பாத்திரம். 2. (R.) The centre piece of this vessel. பஞ்சபூதம், s. The five elements; earth, air, fire, water, and ether. பஞ்சபூதஅணு, s. The five atomic bases. See பரமாணு under பரமம். பஞ்சப்பிராணன், s. The fifth day of the moon, either in her increase or decrease, ஐந் தாந்திதி. 2. The last five of the lunar days; a death occurring on the first of these is portentous of death to five others in the house, or it vicinity; on the second day to four others, &., on which account, if the death occur on the first day, the corpse is carried out through a hole made in the wall, the house is vacated for months, and various ceremonies are performed to appease the incensed goddess, அவிட்டமுத லைந்துநாள், commonly தனிஷ்டபஞ்சமி. 3. The five lettered incantation, சிவாயநம, which see. பஞ்சாக்கினி, s. The five fires amidst which the devotee performs austerities. one toward each quarter and the sun over-head; or, according to others, a fire in the centre. 2. The five mystic fires in the body, given as இராகம், கோபம், காமம், சடம், தீபனம். Compare தீ. பஞ்சாக்கினிமத்தி, s. The centre of an area in which are five fires, as a place for the performance of austerities. பஞ்சாங்கம், s. An almanac embracing five things; lunar days or phases of the moon, திதி; solar days or week, வாரம்; periods of the asterisms, நட்சத்திரம்; the yogas, யோகம்; and karnas, கரணம்; [ex அங்கம், member, அ becoming ஆ in combination.] பஞ்சாங்கங்கணித்தல்--பஞ்சாங்கம் எ ண்ணுதல், v. noun. Notifying special days and periods, with the ceremonies to be performed, as the household priest to princes. பஞ்சாங்கதெண்டன்-பஞ்சாங்கநமஸ்கா ரம், s. Land held free by such a brahman for his duty. பஞ்சாங்கவாக்கியம், s. [in Hindu astron.] The table of the moon's given longitudes from apogee and daily motions for two hundred and fortyeight days. பஞ்சாங்குலம், s. The castor-plant whose leaves resemble the five digits, ஆமணக்கு; [ex அங்குலம்.] பஞ்சாசயம், s. The five receptacles in the body are: ஆமாசயம், the stomach; 2. இரத்தசயம், the heart; 3. கர்ப்பாசயம், the womb; 4. சலாசயம், the bladder; 5. மலாசயம், rectum. பஞ்சாக்ஷரம், s. As பஞ்சாக்கரம். பஞ்சாமிர்தம்--பஞ்சாமுதம், s. The five delicacies; milk, curds, ghee, sugar, and honey. (in Wils.) 2. (R.) A mixture of plantains, cocoa kernel, milk, sugar and honey, used in anointing an idol. பஞ்சாமிலம், s. An aggregate of the five acids, jujube. இலந்தை; pomegranate, மாதளை; sorrel, புளியாரை; emblica, நெல்லி, citron, எலுமிச்சை; [ex ஆமிலம்.] W. p. 494. PANCHAMILA. பஞ்சாயுதம், s. The five weapons of Vishnu; the discus, club, chank, bow and sword. 2. [prov.] A gold ornament worn by children or women, on the neck with the tali, bearing in relief the five weapons of Vishnu. It is of two kinds, அரசிலைப்பஞ்சாயுதம், one made in the form of fig-leaf; வட்டப்பஞ்சாயுதம், one in a circular form, ஓராபரணம். பஞ்சாயுதபாணி-பஞ்சாயுதன், s. Vishnu, as bearing the five weapons. பஞ்சார்க்கம், s. Five phenomena of the heavens constantly recurring in connexion with the planets; regarded as exerting planetary influence of an unpropitious character taken into account in astrological computation, viz.: 1. தூமம், smaoke; 2. விதிபாதம், one of twentyseven astrological yogas; 3. வில் or இந்திரவில், rainbow; 4. பரிவேடம், halo; 5. சேது, the descending node. பஞ்சார்க்கதோஷம், s.
