amukkirā (p. 20) --அமுக்குரா, s. A medicinal shrub, branched winter cherry with a tuberose root, having deobstruent and diuretic qualities. It is pulverized and taken as a decoction, ஓர்மருந்துப்பூடு, Physalis Flexuosa, L. அமுக்கிராக்கிழங்கு, s. The root of the same. 19)

iracam (p. 48) s. Flavor, relish; what is tasteful, agreeable, palatable, delicious; taste in general, good or bad--also the six flavors. (See சுவை.) 2. Sweetness, இனிமை. 3. Sweet juice of fruits, &c., vegetable juice in general, சாறு. 4. Mercury, quicksilver, hydrargyrum, பாதரசம். 5. (p.) One of the juices of the body, சத்ததாதுவினொன்று. (See தாது.) It corresponds more with chyle than any other, but probably it is fanciful. 6. Pepper-water made of several ingredients, மிளகுநீர். 7. [in rhetoric.] The passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry, வீரமுதலியவெண்சுவை. Of these eight are given; viz.: 1. வீரம் or வீரியம், courage. 2. அச்சம், பயம், or பயானகம், fear, terror. 3. இழிப்பு, விபற்சம், குற்சை, அருவரு ப்பு, abominating, loathing at or disgusting. 4. வியப்பு or அற்புதம், wonder, surprise, astonishment. 5. காமம், சிங்காரம், சிருங்காரம், love, sexual love. 6. அவலம் or கருணை, acute sensibility, weakness, tenderness, mercy, pity, clemency. 7. உருத்திரம், கோ பம், இரௌத்திரம், பெருங்கோபம், warlike fury, wrath, displeasure, rage. 8. நகை, பெரு நகை or ஆசியம், laughter, mirth, risibility, great or intense laughter, laughing in contempt. By some, சாந்தம், tranquillity, equanimity, peace, abstraction or the stoicism of the ascetics; and by others வற்சலம், parental tenderness are given as a ninth meaning; இரசம் is added at pleasure with the loss in some cases of its initial-as வீராசம், இழிப்பிரசம், &c. Wils. p. 697. RASA. இரசகந்தாயம், s. Tribute, the fatness of the earth. இரசகந்தாயமாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak pleasingly. இரசகருப்பூரம், s. Muriate of mercury, ஓர்மருந்து. இரசகுண்டு, s. [prop. இரசக்குண் டு.] A globular glass filled with mercury as a decoration at weddings, &c., also as a charm. இரசகுளிகை--இரசமாத்திரை, s. A quick-silver pill employed in medicine, இரசத்தினாற்செய்தமாத்திரை. 2. [in alchemy.] A pill feigned to be used by a class of persons called சித்தர், now in the world of Indra, who thereby perform supernatural actions--as கமனஞ்செய்கை, or passing through the air to any desired place, சித்தர்குளிகை. இரசக்கட்டு, s. RASAB'HASMAN. இரசபாஷாணம், s. A kind of prepared arsenic. இரசப்பிரீதி--இரசமாதா, s. One of the hundred-and-twenty kinds of arsenic in its natural state. இரசமணி, s. Hard globules of mercury prepared by incantations, &c., and worn as an amulet in order to prevent evil, cure diseases, to promote success in undertakings, &c. இரசமுறிக்க, inf. To prepare mercury for medicine. 2. To carry mercury off from the body. இரசலிங்கம், s. Vermilion, சாதி லிங்கம். 2. A case of mercury for a linga. இரசவாதம்--இரசவித்தை, s. Alchemy--one of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். இரசவாதம்பண்ண, inf. To practise the art of alchemy. இரசவாதி, s. An alchemist. இரசவாழை--இரதவாழை, s. ōṭu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓடினேன், வேன், ஓட, v. n. To run, flee, flee away, pass quickly, விரைந்துசெல்ல. 2. [used with the impers. terminations.] To grow long, extend, be long, go far, நீள. 3. To divide, split, crack, வெடிக்க. ஓடவுமாட்டான் பிடியுங்கொடான். He will neither run, nor suffer himself to be caught. அவனுக்குஎழுத்துநடையோடாது. He cannot read freely. ஊரோடுகையிலொக்கவோடு. Run when your fellow-countrymen do; i. e. do as others do. வேரோடுகிறது. The root runs (into the ground). கப்பலோடுகிறது. The ship is sailing, is under sail. ஓடவைத்தல், v. noun. Refining metals, புடம்வைத்தல். இழிவினோடொன்றிநின்றவாடகத்தையோடவைக் குமாறுபோல். As refining gold spoiled by mixture with the same metal of inferior quality. (பார.) ஓடவைத்தபொன், s. Refined gold. ஓடாணி, s. [in jewelry.] A pin or bolt passed into an ornament as a fastening, ஆபரணக்கடைப்பூட்டு. ஓடித்திரிய, inf. To run about. 2. To assume airs. 3. To take great pains, &c., to attain an object. ஓடிப்படர, inf. To run and spread as a creeper. ஓடிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To overtake in running. ஓடிப்போக, inf. To run away. ஓடியாடிப்பார்க்க, inf. To go about, to endeavor. அவன்ஒருஉத்தியோகத்திற்கோடியாடிப்பார்க்கிறா ன். He goes about in pursuit of a situation. ஓடியுறைய, inf. To congeal gradually, இறுக--chiefly used in the past. கஷாயமெல்லாமோடியுறைந்தது. The decoction is all congealed. ஓடிவர, inf. To approach at a running pace. ஓடிவிறைக்க, inf. To extend--as stiffness over the body through cold, முழுதும்விறைக்க. ஓடிவெளிக்க, inf. [prov.] To be dispelled--as clouds; to clear--as the sky, முகில்பரந்தொழிய. 2. To be discovered--as fraud, theft, &c., களவுவெளிப்பட. அவர்வஞ்சகமெல்லாமோடிவெளித்துப்போயிற்று. He has discovered the imposition, &c. மழையோடிவெளித்துப்போயிற்று. The appearance of rain is past away, the sky is become clear. ஓடுதாவடி, s. Bustle and confusion in preparing--as for a journey, &c., going abroad--as for business, &c., in a time of bustle, &c., கலக்கம். ஓடுதாவடிப்படுதல், v. noun. Being in a bustle--as in preparing for a journey, &c. ஓடுபந்தல், s. [prov.] A moveable canopy supported on cords, &c., நடைக் காவணம். ஓடுவிப்புருதி, s. A running cancer, ஓர்புண். ஓட்டம், v. noun. Running, flight, galloping, speeding, ஓடுமோட்டம். 2. Current, flowing, course, pace, drift, நீரோட் டம். 3. Defeat, rout, retreat, flight, தோல்வி. அங்கேநானெடுத்தஓட்டமிங்கேவந்தோய்ந்தது... I ran all the way hither. அவனுக்கெழுத்தோட்டமில்லை. He does not read fluently. ஓரோட்டமாய்வா. Come at once, come without halting, do not stay on the way. ஓட்டங்காட்ட, inf. To lead the way, to precede inducing others to follow. ஓட்டமாகவோட, inf. To run with great speed. ஓட்டமெடுக்க-ஓட்டம்பிடிக்க, inf. kacāyam (p. 85) --கஷாயம், s. [impr. கயா ழம்.] Decoction. Wils. p. 25. KASHAYA. கஷாயங்காய்ச்ச--கஷாயம்வைக்க, inf. To prepare a decoction. திரிகடுகுக்கஷாயம், s. A decoction of three medicinal ingredients; viz.: dry ginger, pepper, and long-pepper. திரிபலைக்கஷாயம், s. A decoction of gall-nut, the fruit of Terminalia and Emblica. மூதண்டகஷாயம், s. A decoction, &c. கருக்குச்சுருட்டு, s. Guilefulness, crookedness of mind, வஞ்சகம். கருக்குப்பீர்க்கு, s. A kind of creeper whose fruit is used for curry. கருக்குப்போட, inf. To make a decoction of drugs. கருக்குவராகன், s. A new pagoda or coin on which the figures are well defined. கருக்குவாய்ப்பட, inf. To be rough edged. கருக்குவாளி--கருக்காமரம், s. The name of a tree, கருக்குவரய்ச்சி, with a dark jagged leaf, serrated, ஓர்மரம், Zizyphus trinervius. (Rott.) கருக்குவாள், s. A sword with a sharp edge, கருக்கானவாள். கருக்குவேலை, s. kāyccu (p. 104) கிறேன், காய்ச்சினேன், வேன், காய்ச்ச, v. a. [caus. of காய்.] To boil, prepare by boiling; to cook, காயச்செய்ய. 2. To heat --as iron, &c., by fire, இரும்புமுதலியனகாய்ச்ச. 3. To heat--as the sun, கனற்ற. 4. To dry, warm, &c.--as in the sun, or by putting near fire, உலர்த்த. 5. To scold, to reprove, கண்டிக்க. 6. [prov.] To dye, to tinge, as a cloth. துரை அவனை நன்றாய்க் காய்ச்சிப்போட்டார். The magistrate has sharply reprimanded him. காய்ச்சுக்கட்டி--காய்ச்சுண்டி s. The juice of young betel-nuts inspissated by boiling, and then dried, காசுக்கட்டி. (c.) (Ains. v. I, p. 65.)--Note. காய்ச்சு க்கட்டி, and காசுக்கட்டி may be from the foreign word Catechu, and not necessarily from காய்ச்சு the Tamil verb. காய் ச்சுண்டி is from the Portuguese, கச்சுண்டி. காய்ச்சுக்கல், s. A dyed or tinged stone a counterfeit gem. காய்ச்சுப்பு--காய்ச்சுலவணம், s. Salt obtained by boiling down salt water. காய்ச்சு, v. noun. Heating metal, stone &c.; boiling any liquid, இரும்புமுதலியனகா ய்ச்சுகை. இரண்டுகாய்ச்சுக் காய்ச்சிப்போட்டான். He has already heated the metal twice. இரும்புக்காய்ச்ச, inf. To heat a piece of iron. கஞ்சிகாய்ச்ச, inf. To boil or prepare rice-water. கஷாயங்காய்ச்ச, inf. To prepare a decoction. 94)

kuṭi (p. 116) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To drink, to take drink, பருக. 2. To inhale, உறிஞ்ச. 3. To tipple, to guzzle, to drink toddy or arrack, to drink to excess, மதுவுண்ண. 4. To suck--as infants or other young creatures, முலையுண்ண. 5. To devour, to quaff, மண்ட. 6. To take or swallow-as liquid medicines, &c., மருந்துகுடிக்க. 7. (fig.) To absorb, to imbibe, உட்கொள்ள. 8. To smoke--as tobacco, &c. உயிர்குடித்தன்றிநில்லா. Not stopping except to drink the lives of those around. குடியாதவீடுவிடியாது. No tippler is content unless he drinks. குடிவெறிஅடிபடத்தீரும். Flogging is a sure remedy for intoxication. நல்லபால்குடித்துவளர்ந்தவன். One who has been virtuously brought up. நிலந்தண்ணீரைக்குடித்துவிட்டது. The earth has drunk up or absorbed the water. பால்குடிக்கிறகுழந்தை. A child at the breast. குடிகாரன்--குடியன் s. A drunkard, a tippler, வெறியன். குடிமதம், s. Excitement of spirits by drinking. குடிவெறி, s. Intoxication by drinking, intemperance. குடிநீர், s. A decoction, a tincture, a medical infusion, a diet-drink. குடி, v. noun. Is there a decoction without dry ginger? i. e. the secret will out. சுக்குத்தண்ணீர், s. Ginger-tea. சுக்குமா, s. Powdered dry ginger. சுக்குச்சுக்காயுடைய, inf. To break in pieces, be shivered. சுக்குச்செட்டுக்காரன், s. One extremely covetous, உலுத்தன். சுக்குச்செட்டுப்பண்ண, inf. To profit by small merchandize. காய்ந்துசுக்காய்ப்போக, inf. tārakam (p. 234) s. That which protects, supports; a vehicle, receptacle; means in the operations of the deity, ஆதரவு. 2. Sustenance, light food given after abstinence, ஆகாரம். (c.) 3. The majestic mantra, or monosyllable ஓம், ஓர்மந்திரம். 4. Star, வெள்ளி. W. p. 373. TARAKA. 5. [in music.] The highest voice, a high key or note, உச்ச இசை. See தாரம்--Note. There are several kinds of decoction in common use, as அன்னதாரகம், the juice of boiled rice; திப்பிலி தாரகம், pepper-water; தினைத்தாரகம், millet-gruel; நாயுருவித்தாரகம், an infusion of நாயுருவி plant. அவன்எனக்குத்தாரகம். He is my support. தெய்வம்நமக்கெல்லாஞ்சீவதாரகமாயிருக்கிறது. God is the preserver of life to us all. அருள்தாரகமாக. By divine grace. தாரகப்பிரமமந்திரம்--தாரகப்பிரமம், s. The mystic syllable ஓம், supposed to protect. தாரகம்பண்ண, inf. To nourish with proper diet. (Rare.) தாரகன், s. A supporter, sustainer, refuge, ஆதரிக்கிறவன். 2. nāy (p. 274) s. A dog, ஞமலி, 2. The sign of the regent of the south-west, நிருதியின்குறி. 3. Conical pieces in the play of chess or ticklack, சூதாடுகருவி.--Of நாய், there are கடல்நாய், a seal; மரநாய், palmyra dog; நீர்நாய், மீனாய், a beaver; செந்நாய், a wild dog, கோ ணாய் or கோநாய், a wolf, (c.) நாயும்பேயுங்கொண்டுபோகின்றன. Dogs and devils (strangers) carry it away. நாய்க்குமுழுத்தேங்காய்தக்குமா. Of what use to the dog is an unbroken cocoanut? நாய்வேஷம்போட்டால்குலைத்தேதீரவேணும். If one disguise himsel as a dog he should bark. நாயரஞ்சி, s. As நாயுருவி. (R.) நாயாட்டம், Dog-like, mean, servile. நாயீ, s. A dog fly; [ex இ. நாயுணி, s. A kind of tick. நாயும்புலியும், s. A kind of play, with seeds, stones, &c., in squares. நாயுருவி, s. [sometimes நாய்குருவி.] A kind of plant, Achyranthes aspera, L. which forms one of the nine kinds of sacrificial fuel. See சமித்து.-- The root is used as a dentifrice, and from the skin of the root, a decoction is made as an aperient for infants. The leaves are bruised and applied to scorpion bites as a specific; [ex உருவி, penetrating as a biting dog.] There are two kinds, செந் நாயுருவி, the red, and வெண்ணாயுருவி, the white, which see. நாயுறக்கம், s. Very slight sleep, as of a dog. நாயோட்டம், s. A dog's pace, spoken of a horse, dhoney, &c. நாய்குருவி, s. As நாயுருவி. (R.) நாய்க்கடி, s. Bite of a dog. நாய்கடிபூனைக்கடிபடுகிறார்கள். They are snaring like cats and dogs. நாய்க்கடுகு, s. A small plant like mustard, as நாய்வேளை. நாய்க்குட்டி, s. A young dog, a puppy. நாய்க்குணம்--நாய்த்தனம், s. Doggedness. See குணம். நாய்க்கோலம், s. Mean appearance, shabiness of dress, &c. நாய்ச்சீரகம், s. A plat. See சீரகம். நாய்த்திசை, s. South-west. See திக்கு. நாய்த்துளசி, s. A kind of wild Marjoram. See கஞ்சாங்கோரை. நாய்வேளை, S. A species of Euphorbia neriifolia, as இலைக்கள்ளி. நாய்ப்பயறு, s. A leguminous plant, Indigofera glabra, L. நாய்ப்பாகல், s. A medicinal plant of the Senna species, Bryonia maysorensis.
