iẕi (p. 55) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To descend, dismount, sink, fall into, to be involved in, இறங்க. 2. To be degraded, disgraced, to degenerate, to be reduced in character, estimation, rank or circumstances, இழிவுபட. 3. To fall below mediocrity, to be inferior, to be below in comparison, தாழ. இழிகடை, s. [vul.] The meanest, lowest, most degraded, மிகவிழிந்தது. (Abusively.) அவனொரு இழிகடை. He is a low wretch. இழிகண், s. Inflammation of the eyes causing the lids to droop, இழிந்தகண். இழிகுலத்தோர், s. Low caste people, கீழ்மக்கள். இழிசனர், s. Persons of low caste, illiterate or ill-bred people, கீழ்மக்கள். இழிசனர்வார்த்தை, s. The vulgar dialect. இழிசொல், s. Disgraceful or improper language, பழிச்சொல், of which four kinds are enumerated, viz.: 1. கோள் --குறளை, an invidious or injurious report, tale bearing, aspersion, slander, backbiting. 2. பொய்மொழி, lying, falsehood. 3. கடுஞ்சொல், harsh expressions, irritating language, scolding. 4. பயனில்சொல், nonsense, idle talk, vain expressions. 2. A vulgar word, இழிவானசொல். இழிஞர், s. Low caste people, the vulgar, the wretched, the miserable, debased, ignoble persons, சண்டாளர். இழிதகவு, v. noun. Inferiority, baseness, disgrace, degradation, meanness, இழிவு. 2. s. Poverty, destitution, எளிமை. இழிதிணை, s. The inferior class. See திணை. இழிந்தோர், s. The vulgar, the illiterate, low-bred persons, தாழ்ந்தோர். இழிபு, v. noun. Lowness, inferiority, meanness, degradation, baseness, தாழ்வு. 2. A hollow or ditch, any hole or cavity, depressions in land, பள்ளம். வெள்ளைக்கிழிபு, s. The less or minor species of வெண்பா verse. இழிவு, v. noun. Inferiority, lowness in rank or character, meanness, baseness, தாழ்வு. 2. Contempt, disgrace, dishonor, ignominy, abjectness, wretchedness, abasement, நிந்தை. 3. Diminution, decrease, a diminished quantity, deficiency, குறைவு. 4. A hollow or cavity, பள்ளம். 5. Decay, ruin, destruction, கேடு. 6. Fault, blemish, deviation from rule, misdemeanor, குற்றம். இழிவறிந்துண்பான். One who eats knowing the advantages of a spare diet. இழிவுபட, inf. To grow mean, base, vile, to deteriorate, be in disgrace, to be degraded, ஈனப்பட. இழிவுபடுத்த, inf. v. a. To degrade, disgrace, deteriorate, debase, தாழ்வுபடுத்த. இழிவுபண்ண, inf. To treat with contempt, நிந்தைசெய்ய. தனதுமரபினிழிவுயர்ச்சியின்றி. (Choosing a wife) from a family neither above nor below his rank. 34)

Baseness, meanness, degradation, தாழ்வு. 6. Disgrace, reproach, taunt, நிந்தை. 7. Falsehood, பொய். இழுக்குடையபாட்டிற்கிசைநன்று. A good metre will set off an indifferent poem. தன்குலத்துக்கிழுக்குவைத்தான். He has brought disgrace on his family or caste. இழுக்கற, inf. [used adverbially.] Free from imputation. இழுக்குச்சொல், s. Reproach, taunt. 2. Faulty expression, incorrect phraseology. இழுக்குடையான், s. A worthless or mean person. 39)

ūṉam (p. 72) s. Defect, want, deficiency --as of a member, &c.; a maim, privation, குறைபாடு. Wils. p. 165. UNA. 2. Disgrace, degradation, meanness, vileness, ஈனம். 3. (p.) Moral evil, தீமை. ஊனமிலாவுறுப்பு. A form without defect, (அறநெறித்.) ஊனமிலான்மானமிலான். (Dharma) who is alike unconscious of disgrace and of honor. -- (பார.) ஊனவெம்பவம். Vile, horrid transmigration. (சத. 64.) காலூனப்பட்டவன். One who has lost a leg, or who is defective in his legs. கையூனம், s. Privation of a hand. ஊனக்கண், s. The defective eye of the body, in contradistinction to the all-seeing eye of the Deity, or the spiritual eye of the sage, நேத்திரம். 2. Defective sight, குருட்டுவிழி. ஊனன், s. One defective in some member, குறைவுள்ளோன். 9)

eñcu (p. 73) கிறது, எஞ்சினது, ம், -எஞ்ச, v. n. To diminish, decrease, shorten, lessen, grow small, few, &c., சுருங்க. 2. To be deficient, be defective, to lack, want, குறைய. 3. To remain, be left as a surplus, சேஷமா யிருக்க. 4. To be elliptical--as words, or clauses, சொல்லெஞ்சிநிற்க. (p.) பின்பவ்வெஞ்சியவிருவரும். Afterwards the remaining two persons-எஞ்சணி, s. An ellipsis. எஞ்சிநிற்க, inf. To be wanting or elliptical--as language; to be understood, குறைந்திருக்க. எஞ்சியசொல்லினெய்தக்கூறல், v. noun. [in grammar.] Expressing in a few words, or an author's not mentioning things explicitly, but leaving them to be inferred by the reader--one of the thirty-two உத்தி. எஞ்சல், v. noun. ēṟu (p. 79) கிறேன், ஏறினேன், வேன், ஏற. v. n. [also used with the impers. terminations.] To rise, rise--as the heavenly bodies-as a kite, &c.; to emerge, இவர. 2. To get upon, mount, to ride a horse, a vehicle, வாகனமேற. 3. To enter, to penetrate--as a nail, a probe, a thorn; as thoughts or advice into the mind, &c., தைக்க. 4. To embark, to get into a boat or vessel, to be laden--as cargo, கப்பலேற. 5. To be elevated, high, beyond, &c.; to exceed mediocrity, to be excessive, redundant, superfluous, உயர. 6. To exceed in number, weight, measure, to rise in price, quality, &c., தொகைமுதலியவதிகரிக்க. 7. To pervade, to be diffused through the blood--as poison, நஞ்சேற. ஏறுகாலிறங்குகால்பார்க்க. To trace the track of an animal up and down a hill, to or from the water, &c.--as a hunter. குதிரையேறிவந்தான். He came on horseback. பயிரேறிவிட்டது. The corn is grown up. சொன்னதுமனதிலேறவில்லை. It did not enter his mind, he did not take notice of what was said. மாவேறமலையேறும். Small sums make a large total, lit. mountains are formed from atoms. இந்தத்தோணியிலெவ்வளவேறும். What is the tonnage of this dhoney? ஏற. [inf. of ஏறு, used adverbially.] High, much more, exceeding, மிக. அரைப்படிக்கேறக்கொடு. Give me more than half a measure. இதேறப்பெறும். This is worth more. விலையேறப்பெற்றது. That which is obtained at a high price. 2. That which is valuable, precious. ஏறக்கட்ட, inf. To build up, to edify, உயரக்கட்ட. 2. To refuse selling that the price may be increased, தானிய மேறக்கட்ட. 3. To be restrained, or to withhold as the clouds from raining, or a cow from giving milk, மழைமுதலியபெய் யாதிருக்க. 4. [local.] To collect scattered grain in a heap, இறைந்ததானியத்தைக்கூட்டிச் சேர்க்க. வானம்மழையேறக்கட்டிவிட்டது. The heaven has withheld the rain. ஏறக்கட்டித்தூக்க, inf. To hang up a thing. 2. To hang one up by the hands--as a school boy, a slave, &c., in order to flog him. ஏறக்குறைய--ஏறத்தாழ, s. More or less, about right, nearly. ஏறக்குறையப்பேச. to insult, to abuse. நூறுபேருக்கேறக்குறைய. About one-hundred persons. ஏறச்செலவழிக்க, inf. To spend extravagantly. ஏறவாங்க, inf. To buy cheaper, நயமாகவாங்க. 2. to be drawn up, distorted--as the neck by cold, &c., கழுத்தேற வாங்க. ஏறவிட, inf. To keep off a vessel from shore, மரக்கலத்தைக்கரைக்குத்தூரவிட. 2. To keep near to the wind--as a vessel, காற்றுமுகமாய்விட. 3. To turn a vessel to the shore, கரைசேரவிட. ஏறவிட்டேணியைவாங்கினதுபோல். Like removing the ladder a person has ascended. ஏறவிறங்கப்பார்க்க, inf. To stare at one, to gaze at one from head to foot, கேசாதிபாதமீறாகப்பார்க்க. நடந்தேற, inf. To be accomplished, to succeed. கரையேற, inf. To land, disembark. 2. To attain the shores of final salvation. ஏறாங்கடைசி, s. [prop. ஏறுகடை.] The very end, அறமுடிவு. ஏறாமேடு, s. A height which one cannot reach, or to which water cannot rise, உயர்ந்தமேடு. 2. An enterprise above one's power, செய்யக்கூடாதகாரியம். 3. An inconvenient engagement, unsuitable contract, &c.--as an unequal marriage, ஒவ்வாமை-- in use, ஏறாங்கடை ஏறிக்கொள்ள, inf. To establish one's self in a high office, &c., to arrive at a high state or sanctity, or to attain a higher degree in religion. See நிலை or பாதம். சாதியிலேயேறிக்கொண்டான். [prov.] He has risen in caste by marrying in a higher family (spoken sarcastically). ஏறிட, inf. To stick into, to cause to enter, to pierce, புகப்பண்ண. 2. To place, set up, fix, ஏற்ற. வில்லைவளைத்துநாணேறிட்டு. Bending the bow and fixing on the bowstring. பருவிற்சலாகையையேறிட்டான். He introduced the probe into the sore. ஏறிட்டுப்பார்க்க, inf. To look up. 2. To attend to one when speaking. 3. To look or stare at a person. என்னையேறிட்டுப்பார்க்கவில்லை. He did not even cast a look at me, he took no notice of me. Amongst the Hindus it is not deemed respectful to look at a superior in the face; even when addressing him or receiving his directions. ஏறுகடை, s. The very end, the extremity, முடிவானகடை. ஏறுகுதிரை, s. A riding horse. ஏறுக்குமாறு--ஏறுமாறு, s. Improper, unruly, or vicious behavior, தாறுமாறு. ஏறுசலாகை, s. [prov.] In building, a large lath passing through the ends of rafters, கைமரங்கோக்குஞ்சலாகை. ஏறுதுறை, s. A port, place of embarkation, exportation, &c., துறைமுகம். ஏறுநெற்றி, s. A high forehead (regarded as a fortunate mark in a man, but unlucky in a female--as calculated to cause an untimely death to her husband), also a mark of a masculine, imperious and irrascible temper, அகன்ற நெற்றி. ஏறுபடி, s. An extra batta or allowance above the stated proportion, to a servant, for expenditure in the temple, for an entertainment, &c., அதிகப்படி. ஏறுபெட்டி, s. [prov.] A toddydrawer's basket for carrying toddy, கள் ளேறுபெட்டி. ஏறுபொழுது, s. The sun as it rises toward the meridian. ஏறுமிராசி, s. The constellation in the sun's path from the equator to the northern solstitial point, உச்சத்திற்கேறு மிராசி. See இறங்குமிராசி. ஏறுவட்டம், s. The difference, less or more than sixty Indian hours, in the passage of the moon through any of the asterisms, also the difference in the கர ணம் and யோகம் as affected thereby, நட் சத்திரமுதலியனநாழிகையேறுமுறை. 2. In the division of the inheritance of lands, trades, &c., the excess above or the deficiency in equal shares, பங்கினளவுக்கதிகமா னநிலமுதலியன. ஏறுவால், s. A long tail--a good sign in certain animals, நீண்டவால். பசுஏறுவாலுமெருதுகூழைவாலும். A long tail for a cow and a short one for a bull are desirable. ஏறுவெய்யில். Increasing heat or sunshine as the sun rises towards the meridian, காலைவெய்யில்--opp. இறங்குவெய் யில். ஏறெடுக்க, inf. To lift up the head, eyes, &c., மேலெடுக்க. 82)

olku (p. 83) கிறது, ஒல்கினது, ம், ஒல்க, v. n. To become reduced, thin, slender, emaciated, to grow small, diminish, தளர. 2. To be subject to, to submit, be repressed, be contained, கீழ்ப்படிய. 3. To grow weak, faint, reduced or broken in mind, to pine, to be dejected, disheartened, குழைய. 4. To shrink from, be deficient, to fail in the performance of duties, குறைய. 5. To coil up, shrivel, contract as an elastic body, சுருங்க. 6. To waver, shake, &c., from weakness, or from being over-burdened, to be flexible, துவள. (p.) ஒல்காதார்வாய்விட்டுலம்புப. Those of unrestrained passions chatter and boast. (நீதி நெறி.) ஒல்குதேவியைத்தெளித்தொருப்படுத்தி. Consoling his distressed wife and prevailing upon her to consent to (the enterprise)-(ஸ்காந்.) ஒல்குமிடைநவ்வியும். The deer-like (damsel) having a slender waist-- (பாரத.) சிதைவிடத்தொல்காருரவோர். The wise will not be discouraged in adversity. (குறள்.) வல்லியினொல்கி. Being pliant (when agitated) as a creeper-ஒல்கல், v. noun. The state of fading or pining, குழைதல். 2. Slackness, தளர்தல். 3. To cease, desist, cease from actions, dispense with, to intermit, cease--as trees from bearing for the season or entirely; to discontinue a course of actions good or bad, ஓய. 2. To be over--as a market, an assembly, &c., கலைய. 3. To be excepted, be empty, தவிர. 4. To go off, forsake, quit, evacuate, leave, நீங்க. 5. To fail, decline, be extinct, become annihilated, கெட. 6. To die, perish, சாவ. 7. To be finished, terminated, ended, செய்தொழிய. 8. To clear off, be cleared off, removed by little and little, தீர. 9. v. a. To omit, to except, விட. ஒழிந்தவர்களெங்கே. Where are the rest? பட்டொழிந்தோரொழிந்தோர்கள். All but those who fell in battle-- (பார.) கூட்டமொழிந்தது. The meeting is over. கருமமொழியாதியற்றல். Performing rites without intermission. சண்டையொழிந்தது. The quarrel has ceased. வேலையொழிந்தது. The business is over, the affair is ended. ஒழிகடை, s. The state of being almost exhausted--as stores, &c., almost ended, nearly over. ஒழிந்தவேளை, s. Leisure. ஒழியிசை, s. [in grammar.] A kind of ellipsis. ஒழிய, inf. [used as an exceptive particle.] Except, besides, unless, without. நீரொழியப்பாலுண்குருகிற்றெரிந்து. Discriminating as nicely as the swan which extracts milk from water. அவன்வந்தாலொழியப்போகேன். Unless he come I will not go. ஒன்றொழியநானூறு, s. One less than four-hundred. அவனொழியவனைவரையுமழைத்தார்கள். They invited all but him. வழங்காதொழிய, inf. To grow into disuse, to become obsolete. உடம்பொழிய. The body failing-- (பழ மொழி.) துயிலொழிய, inf. To cease sleeping, to wake. ஒழிபு, s. Remainder, ஒழிகை. ஒழிபியல், s. Supplement, appendix, sequel, ஒழிந்தவற்றைக்கூறுமியல். ஒழியாமை, neg. v. noun. Being incessant, continual, unceasing, நீங்காமை. ஒழியாவொழுக்கம், s. Perseverance in virtuous actions. ஒழிவு, v. noun. Ceasing, forsaking, intermission, cessation, omission, ஒழிகை. 2. kṭṭai (p. 88) s. A block, a log, a small stump, a slab, a clump, குற்றி. 2. A post or stake to fasten an animal to, கடாவுமுளை. 3. Fire-wood, விறகு. 4. A short low dwarfish thing, thing grown short by use, worn off--as a pen, &c., தேய்ந்தது. 5. A lifeless body, உடல். 6. Defect, imperfection, inferiority, குறைவு. 7. The refuse or residuum of கேழ்வரகு, தினை and சாயவேர் root after pounding and sifting, திப்பி. 8. Roughness of the beard after shaving, மயிர் க்கட்டை. இந்தச்சீலையகலக்கட்டை. This cloth is narrow. இதுமுழக்கட்டையானசீலை. This cloth is deficient in length and breadth. அந்தமரத்திற்கிந்தமரங்கட்டை. This piece of timber is shorter than that. கல்வியிலவன்கட்டை. [prov.] He is deficient in learning. கட்டைகடாவ, inf. To fasten a splinter or pointed stick, &c. கட்டைக்காலி, s. [prov. vul.] A bear, கரடி--as short legged--and sometimes applied to women, cows, &c. கட்டைக்குரல், s. [prov.] A weak voice, கம்மினகுரல். கட்டைக்குருத்து, s. [prov.] The last tender leaf of a plantain which envelopes the sheath or blossom and shoots out a little before it. கட்டைநெருப்பு, s. Coal fire. கட்டைப்புத்தி, s. Shallow wit, weak intellect, stupidity, தடிப்புத்தி. கட்டையடிக்க, inf. To pass a stick through a plucked jack-fruit to ripen it, ஆப்படிக்க. 2. To hurt the foot against a stump by striking on it, காலிற்கட்டையிடற. 3. To drive a stake into the ground to tie animals to, முளைகடாவ. கட்டையன், s. (fem. கட்டைச்சி.) A short person, குறளன். கட்டைவாக்கு, s. Dimness in a precious stone, இரத்தினத்தின்மங்கலொளி. கட்டைவிரல், s. The thumb or great toe, காலின்பெருவிரல். கட்டைவைத்தல், v. noun. [prov.] Collecting the stones in the hand in the game of கொக்கான். 2. Gaining in the game of singing verses. See ஈற்றெழுத்துக்கவி. முகக்கட்டை--மோக்கட்டை-முகவாய்க்கட்டை--மோவாய்க்கட்டை, s. [as காவியம்.] An epic poem, containing particulars relating to அறம், பொருள், இன்பம், and வீடு, having a hero, and depicting exploits. &c., being of two kinds, the major and minor, viz:பெருங்காப்பியம், s. An epic poem complete in its parts, especially in அறம், பொருள், இன்பம், வீடு, (தண்டி.) சிறுகாப்பியம், s. An epic poem, deficient in one or more of the four main parts. To be insufficient, to be wanting. ஏறக்குறைய, [adverbially.] Nearly, almost, about. நடைகுறைந்துபோயிற்று. He now cannot walk much. 2. His influence is reduced. 3. The speed is reduced--as of horses, cattle, &c. குறைந்தவிலை, s. A dear bargain; a high price. 2. A reduced price, a low price. குறைந்தமரக்கால், s. A scant measure. வயிறுகுறைய, inf. To be unsatisfied --as hunger. குறைச்சல், v. noun. [vul. for. குறைதல்.] Defficiency, dearness, poverty, displeasure, complaint, &c. குறைச்சலல்ல. It is not dear. குறைச்சலாய்க்கிடக்க, inf. To be dear, scarce, &c. குறைச்சலாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak ill of one. செய்கைக்குறைச்சல், s. Misbehavior, misconduct. மனக்குறைச்சல், s. Dissatisfaction, displeasure; grievance. குறைவு, v. noun. Lack, deficiency, dearness, want, scarcity. 2. Indigency, necessity, poverty, தரித்திரம். குறைவறுக்க, inf. To make up a deficiency, to supply wants, to meet exigencies, &c. குறைவானது.
