āṭi (p. 38) s. The month of July, கர்க் கடகமாதம். (c.) 2. (p.) The twenty-first lunar asterism, உத்திராடநாள். 3. Mirror, கண்ணாடி. ஆடிக்கரு, s. Dark clouds in July regarded as indicative of plentiful rains in the ensuing monsoons. ஆடிக்கருவழிந்தால் மழைகுறைந்துபோம். If the teeming clouds in July discharge their contents, the rains will fail in the ensuing season. ஆடிக்கழைக்க, inf. To take away or separate the newly married woman from her husband, and to put her under her parents during the month of July of their first year of marriage. This separation is indispensable to prevent conception in that month, and delivery in the coming April, which is believed to bring ruin upon the family. ஆடிப்பண்டிகை, s. The first day of July (ஆடி.) a day of feasting, mutual visits, &c., when the sun is supposed to enter on its southern course. ஆடிப்பெருக்கு, s. A festival held on the day when the Cavery over-flows in July. 8)

Loss of power, property, dignity, &c., சீர்கேடு. ஈடன், s. A strong, competent, wealthy man, பெருமையுடையோன். ஈடன்பாடஞ்சான். A wealthy man will not fear losses. ஈடாட, inf. To compete with another, நேர்நிற்க. 2. [prov.] To be loose--as a tooth, a nail, the spokes of a wheel, to joggle, உழல. ஈடாட்டம், v. noun. Competing or matching with another. 2. Pecuniary ability, the free use of money--as by a rich merchant, கொடுக்கல்வாங்கல். 3. Being loose--as a nail, &c., உழலுகை. ஈடுகட்ட--ஈடுபண்ண, inf. To give security, பிணைகொடுக்க. 2. To make amends, restitution, reprisals, &c., to identify, ஈடுசெய்ய. ஈடுகொடுக்க--ஈடுசெலுத்த, inf. To reward, give an equivalent, to content, பதிலளிக்க. 2. To bear, tolerate, endure, yield, &c., ஈடுகட்ட. அவனுக்கீடுகொடுக்கமுடியாது. It is impossible to give him satisfaction. வீடுபலக்கக்கட்டினாற்புயலுக்குமீடுகொடுக்கும். If the house be strongly built, it will endure the storm. அவனுக்கிவனீடுகொடுக்கமாட்டான். This person cannot compete with him. ஈடுபாடு, s. Loss and gain, நய நஷ்டம். 2. Substitution, ஒப்பு. ஈடேற, inf. To be emancipated from sin, births, &c., to obtain final happiness, உய்ய. 2. To be saved from ruin and be rendered secure, to rise from indigence to prosperity, to be completely rescued from distress, difficulty, danger, disease, &c., வாழ்வடைய. கன்னிகையீடேறிவிட்டாள். The girl has attained a marriage settlement. அந்தக்குடியீடேறிவிட்டது. That family is rescued from indigence, saved from ruin. &c. ஈடேற்ற, inf. To deliver, rescue, இரட்சிக்க. 2. To raise one from distress, indigence, &c. to the attainment of the desired good, to promote, to establish in good circumstances. வாழ்வடை யச்செய்ய. 3. To redeem, emancipate from births, &c., மீட்க. ஈடேற்றப்பட, inf. To be saved, delivered, rescued from ruin indigence, distress, &c., to be rendered secure against danger, &c., இரட்சிக்கப்பட. ஈடேற்றம், s. Final and eternal happiness, the liberation of the soul from the body and its exemption from further transmigrations, and translation to a permanent state of happiness, final emancipation, பேரின்பவாழ்வு. 2. Deliverance from a state of suffering, indigence, &c., உய்வு. 3. The marriage of a destitute girl under favorable auspices, கன்னிகையீடேற்றம். ஈட்டுக்கீடு, s. Like for like, retaliation, requital. கடையீடு, s. Ground the lowest in value and assessment. தலையீடு, s. A very fruitful soil, known to be such by its aspect. 6)

ūr (p. 70) s. A country, a village, town, or city, புரம். ஊரறிந்தபார்ப்பான். A brahman who knows the whole country or town; i. e. a person competent for business. ஊருடன்கூடிவாழ். Prosper in the society of your fellow citizens. ஊரோடேபோய்ச்சேர்ந்தான். He arrived at home. ஊரன், s. The chief of an agricultural district, மருதத்தலைவன். (p.) ஊரவர்கள்--ஊரார், s. Inhabitants of a village, town, country, &c. 2. Others, strangers, not one's own people, அன்னியர்.--Used adjectively, the ர் is often dropped--as ஊராகாரியம், others' affairs; ஊராசொத்து, others' property; ஊ ராகாணி, others' land. ஊராருடைமைக்குப்பேராசைகொள்ளுதல்..... Coveting other men's property-துஷ்டப்பிள்ளைக்குஊரார்புத்திசொல்லுவார்கள்... An unruly child will be chastized by the magistrates. ஊரார்கையிற்கொடுக்க, inf. To deliver into another man's hand. ஊராளி, s. The ruler, magistrate, or headman of a district, ஊரதிகாரி. ஊரிலிகம்பலை, s. [prop. ஊர்கலி கம்பலை.] A village quarrel, tumult, &c. ஊரின்னிசை, s. A poem concerning the heroes of a town, or country, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். See பிரபந்தம். ஊருக்குப்போக, inf. To go to a town, to go on a journey. ஊருணி, s. A public tank accessible to all in the town, ஊரடுத்தகுளம். ஊருணிநீர்நிறைந்தற்றேயுலகவாம்பேரறிவாளன் றிரு. The wealth of one possessing great wisdom, and who is much liked by the public is like a tank filled with water to which all have access. ஊரெழுச்சி, s. Rising of citizens to present complaints to the authorities; also insurrection, ஊர்க்கலகம். ஊர்கூடுதல், v. noun. Assembling --as citizens. ஊர்கூடிச்செக்குத்தள்ளவேண்டுமா? Is it necessary that the whole city come together to turn the oilman's press? i. e. a trifling matter does not require a concourse of people. ஊர்கோலம்வர--ஊர்வலம்வர, inf. To pass about as a nuptial procession, first to the right as being auspicious, கிராமப்பிரதட்சணம்வர. ஊர்க்கதை, s. Rumor, countrytalk, ஊர்ப்பேச்சு. 2. Unfounded reports, slander, defamation, பொய்ச்செய்தி. 3. A wild, romantic story, வீண்செய்தி. ஊர்க்கலகம், s. A village quarrel, ஊரிலுண்டாகுங்கலகம். 2. Astronomical calculation, கணித்தல். 3. Counting with the fingers in astronomical calculations, &c. See கைத்தொழில். எண்ணலர், s. Foes, enemies, பகைவர். (p.) எண்ணலளவை, s. Computation. எண்ணலளவையாகுபெயர், s. One of the four kinds of அளவையாகுபெயர், according to which a number is put for the thing numbered--as காலாலேநடந்தான், he walked on one-fourth (of his length); i. e. his leg, which is so called because it bears that proportion to individual stature. எண்ணிக்கை, v. noun. Regard, esteem, honor, estimation, reverence, மதிப்பு. 2. Number, numbering, கணிப்பு. --Note. This word is irregular in its formation. எண்ணிக்கைக்குப்பிறந்தபிள்ளைகள். Children who seem born only to make up a number, being of no estimation. எண்ணிக்கைக்குள்ளடங்காதது. That which is innumerable. சேவகரையெண்ணிக்கைசெய்கிறது. To muster soldiers. எண்ணிக்கைகொடுக்க, inf. eẕutu (p. 75) கிறேன், எழுதினேன், வேன், எழுத, v. a. To write, paint, draw, mark, stain, trace (letters, &c.), inscribe, வரைய. 2. To foreordain, to predestine. This verb is soused from the notion that each one's fate is written by Brahma in the skull, தலையிலெழுத. 3. To write composition, draw up in writing, வசனாதிகளெழுத. 4. To engrave, சித்திரமெழுத. எழுதக்கைதிரும்பவில்லை. The hand is not yet trained. எட்கிடைநெற்கிடைவிட்டெழுத. To write leaving the space of a sesamum seed between the letters, and of a grain of rice between the lines--the order to be observed in writing. எழுதாக்கிளவி--எழுதாமறை, s. The vedas, lit. unwritten works--an appellation adopted with reference to their meaning being handed down by oral explanation and not written, or to the accent, pronunciation, &c., which cannot be written, வேதம். எழுதிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To grant by writing, write and deliver as a voucher. 2. To betroth a girl by written contract. 3. To write for another, draw up a document. 4. To write lessons for a learner. 5. To give a list, inventory, &c. எழுதிக்கொள்ள, inf. To write a letter, petition, &c., to a great person; to write for one's self. 2. To enrol. 3. To write and deliver vouchers reciprocally. எழுதிச்சேர்க்க, inf. To register, file a writing as a notary public. எழுதிவைக்க, inf. To recount,register, write and keep for a memorandum, &c., to write and leave behind for the use of others. எழுதினஉடன்படிக்கை--எழுதின வொப்பாசாரம், s. Written contract. எழுதுகோல், s. A writing reed, எழுதுங்கோல். 2. A painter's brush or pencil, தூரியக்கோல். எழுதுபடம், s. A picture, கிழி. மேற்பாடம்பார்த்தெழுதுதல், v. noun. Copying from a written book. பெயர்த்தெழுத, inf. To copy, to transcribe. குறிப்பெழுத, inf. To note down the time, &c. of the birth of a child. திருத்தமாயெழுத, inf. To write correctly. சரமகவியெழுத, inf. [prov.] To write a stanza, commemorative of the death of an ancestor, or other near relative, mentioning the day, hour, &c. of the moon, as a memorandum for ascertaining the time to perform the annual funeral rites. மறுமொழியெழுத--பதிலெழுத, inf. aintu (p. 80) adj. or noun. Five, ஓரெண். ஐங்கணை, s. Five flowers feigned to be the arrows of Hindu cupid. (p.) ஐங்கணைக்கிழவன், Kama, the Hindu cupid, lit. lord of the five arrows, மன்மதன். (p.) ஐங்கரன், s. Ganesa, the five-handed. He is represented with an elephant's head, the proboscis or trunk is figuratively reckoned as a hand, விநாய கன். (p.) ஐங்கரற்கிளையோன், s. A name of Skanda, முருகன். 2. Verapattra, வீரபத் திரன். (p.) ஐங்கலம், s. Sixty marcals. ஐங்காதம், s. Five leagues. ஐங்காயம், s. The five kinds of காயம். (See காயம்.) 2. Other five kinds are used in witchcraft, viz.: 1. மிளகு, pepper. 2. வெந்தயம், dill. 3. ஓமம், cardamom. 4. வெள்ளுள்ளி, garlic. 5. பெருங் காயம், assaf&oe;tida. ஐங்காயத்தூள்--ஐங்காயவுண்டை, s. Powders of five ingredients given to women after child-birth, ஓர்மருந்து. ஐங்குரவர், s. The five confidential servants of a king, அரசர்க்குக்குழு, viz.: 1. மந்தியர், ministers. 2. புரோகிதர், priests. 3. சேனாபதியர், generals. 4. தூதர், ambassadors. 5. சாரணர், spies. ஐங்கோணம், s. A pentagon, quinquangular figure, பஞ்சகோணம். ஐஞ்ஞூறு, s. Five-hundred, ஐந் நூறு. ஐந்தரு, s. The five trees in the world of Indra, பஞ்சதாரு, viz.: 1. அரிச்சந்த னம். 2. கற்பகம். 3. சந்தானம். 4. பாரிசாதம். 5. மந்தாரம். ஐந்தருநாதன், s. Indra, lord of the five trees in the celestial world, which yield whatever is asked or desired of them, இந்திரன். (p.) ஐந்தலைநாகம், s. A fabulous fiveheaded cobra, of which each head is supposed to contain a very precious gem. It is said to be found in mountainous districts and to have the power of flying. ஐந்தவித்தல், s. The control of the senses, ஐம்பொறியடக்கல். ஐந்தவித்தானாற் றலகல்விசும்புளார்கோமானிந்திர னேசாலுங்கரி. Indra, the god of the celestials, is a living monument of the wonderful power of those who control the five senses. (குறள்.) ஐந்தனுருபு, s. The fifth case (இன்) --one of the ablatives denoting procession, similitude, limit, and means, ஐந்தாம் வேற்றுமையுருபு. மலையின்வீழருவி. Torrents rushing from the mountains. காக்கையிற்கரிதுகளம்பழம். The களா berry is as black as a crow. மதுரையின்வடக்குச்சிதம்பரம். Sethamparam is situated to the north of Madura. கல்வியிற்பெரியன்கம்பன். Kampan made himself great by learning. ஐந்தாங்கால், s. The first post of the marriage shed when planted on the fifth day before the marriage, the third, fifth, or seventh day being chosen, as it may be lucky or otherwise, according to astrological calculation, மணப்பந்தரின் ஐந்தாங்கால். ஐந்தானம், s. The fifth lunar asterism, மிருகசீரிடம். (p.) ஐந்திணை, s. The five kinds of land, &c., ஐவகைநிலம். (See திணை.) 2. The closest friendship or love between husbands and wives, அன்புடைக்காமம். (p.) ஐந்திணைச்செய்யுள், s. A poem in which the five different kinds of soil are described and illustrated--one of the ninety-six பிரபந்தம், ஓர்பிரபந்தம். (p.) ஐந்துருவாணி, s. A shaft connecting the floors or stages of a car. See அ ஞ்சுருவாணி. ஐந்துறுப்படக்கி, s. The tortoise, ஆமை. (p.) ஐந்தொகைவினா, s. [in arithmetic.] The rule of five or double rule of three, ஓர்வகையெண்வினா. ஐந்தொழில், s. The five divine operations, பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், viz.: 1. சிருஷ்டி, creation or reproduction. 2. ஸ்திதி, preservation. 3. சங்காரம், destruction, reduction of things to their primitive elements. 4. திரோபவம், that act of the deity by which he conceals from the sentient soul its future destiny for purposes of moral discipline; concealing, obscuring; i. e. involving the soul in ignorance or illusion by means of magic. 5. அனுக்கிரகம், grace, the various means adopted for the deliverance of the soul from the power of illusion and consequent transmigrations. See கிருத்தியம். ஐமீன், s. The thirteenth lunar asterism, அத்தநாள். (p.) ஐமுகன்--ஐயானனன், s. Siva, the five-faced, சிவன். (p.) ஐமுகாஸ்திரம், s. A five-pointed arrow, பஞ்சமுகாஸ்திரம். (p.) ஐம்பது, s. The hair of a female, மகளிர்கூந்தல். See பால். (p.) ஐம்புலம்--ஐம்புலன், s. The five senses, பஞ்சவிஷயம். ஐம்புலத்தடங்கான், s. He who is not comprehensible by the five senses-God, கடவுள். (p.) ஐம்புலம்வென்றோர், s. Ascetics, holy persons, முனிவர். (p.) ஐம்புலனடக்கல். Subjugation of the five senses. ஐம்புலனுகர்ச்சியினிறப்பன, s. The five kinds of creatures which perish by means of the senses, viz.: 1. சுவையரல்--மீன், fish, by the taste in catching at the bait. 2. நாற்றத்தால்-வண்டு, beetles, by the smell. 3. ஊற்றினால்-யானை, elephants, by copulation. 4. ஓசையால்-அசுணம், a species of bird by harsh sounds. 5. ஒளியால்-விட்டில், a species of insect, attracted by the light. ஐம்புலன்விழையான், s.
