The தான்றிமரம்-A tree yielding a nut much used in medicines, it is said in நைடதம் that Kali, the god of the iron age, once concealed himself in the fruit of this tree, Terminalia bellerica. To undermine, to injure by any underhand, clandestine means, சதிசெய்ய. கீழறை, s. An under-ground room, a cellar, நிலவறை. 2. A cavern, a cell, a hole or passage under ground, வளை. கீழாக, inf. To become depressed, to sink--as a stalk, a heap of muck, &c.; to deteriorate, to waste--as the body by use or disease; or as property, &c., தாழ் வடைய. கீழாக--கீழாய s. Under, below, beneath. கீழாயிருக்க, inf. To be below, to be mean, to be inferior. கீழாலவத்தை, s. 'Descending states of the soul.' State and degree of consciousness, commencing with objective sensations and descending to subjective feeling and contemplation, the mind receding farther and farther from objective impressions and associations. Hindu physiologists fancy that the mind descends from its seat in the forehead to its other seats, the neck, breast, umbilicus and terminus rectum. (தத்துவக். சிவ. சி.) கீழிருக்க, inf. To lie under, to be under one's dominion or control. கீழாறு, s. A river under ground, பூமி யினுள்ளோடுமாறு. 2. A river in the Congu country, கொங்குதேசத்தாறு. கீழாறுகொண்டுபோயிற்று. The under ground river has carried it away--said of things lost without knowing how. கீழுக்குப்போக, inf. To be diminishes, to be reduced. அவன்புத்தியுங்கல்வியும்வரவரக்கீழுக்குப்போகி றது. His understanding and knowledge are more and more diminishing. கீழோங்கி, s. [prov.] An inferior class or fishermen--as distinguished from மே லோங்கி, a higher rank. கீழ்நோக்க, inf. To look downward, to tend downward, கீழ்ப்பார்க்க. 2. To be sensual, grovelling, to tend toward secularities, இழிவானதைவிரும்ப. 3. To be on the decline--as to wealth, &c.; to go to ruin, to come to naught, தாழ்வடைய. கீழ்நோக்கித்திட்ட--கீழ்நோக்கியேச inf. To use obscene language, to assail with very indecent speech. கீழ்நோக்கு--கீழ்நோக்கம் v. noun. Looking downward, downward tendency, கீழ்ப்பார்வை. 2. Low or grovelling pursuits, a base inclination; underhand, clandestine purpose. கீழ்மேலாக, adv. Upside down. கீழ்ப்பட, inf. Submission, obedience, subordination, subjection, கீழ்ப்ப ணிவு. 2. Docility, tractableness, அமைவு. கீழ்ப்படுத்த--கீழ்ப்படியப்பண்ண, inf. To subdue, to subject, to subordinate, to subjugate, to quell, அடக்க. 2. To lower, to bring down, to reduce, தாழ்வுபடு த்த. 3. To degrade, ஈனப்படுத்த. கீழ்நோக்கினநட்சத்திரம், s. [in astro.] A lunar mansion looking downward-opposed to மேனோக்கினநட்சத்திரம். They are twelve in number. (உள்ளமு.) கீழ்நோக்கினராசி, s. [in astrol.] A zodiacal sign which looks downward.-Note. I am lost, ruined; I an undone. கெட்டுப்போனபார்ப்பானுக்குச் செத்துப்போனப சுவைத்தானங்கொடுத்தாற்போல. As if a dead cow be presented to a ruined brahman; said of an unprofitable pursuit by an incompetent person. கெட்டும்பட்டணஞ்சேர். Though to be ruined, go to the town. தரித்திரங்கெடும்படி. That the misery of poverty may cease. ஈற்றுயிர்மெய்கெடும். The final compound letter is dropped. கெடுகுடிசொற்கேளாது. A family given up to ruin will never listen to advice. கெட்டகுடியேகெடும். A ruined family will sink more and more. கெடுகாலம், s. A time of ruin, evil, drought, &c.; also used reference to retribution of evil deeds which is to come immediately. கெடுமதி, s. Wicked devices. 2. Folly, rashness, presumption. 3. Loss, ruin, waste. கெடுமதி கண்ணுக்குத் தெரியாது. Folly is blind. கெடுவான், appel. n. He who will perish--the wretch; commonly used abusively. கெட்டதனம், s. Bad disposition; badness. 2. Indecorum, incivility. கெட்டநடத்தை, s. Immoral or vile conduct. கெட்டநிலை, s. The metrical feet are thirty, divided into five classes, viz.: 1. உரிச்சீர், or ஆசிரியவுரிச்சீர், feet peculiar to the அகவல் verse--as (a.) தேமா, foot of two simple syllables, a spondee. (b.) புளிமா, one compound and one simple syllable; an iambus. (c.) கருவி ளம். Two compound syllables, a pyrrhic. (d.) கூவிளம். One simple and one compound syllable, a trochee. The names serve also as models for the kinds of feet respectively. They are names of trees and their fruits. 2. வெண்சீர், or வெண்பாஉரி ச்சீர். Feet peculiar to வெண்பா verse; as (a.) தே-மாங்-காய். A foot of three simple syllables. (b.) புளி-மாங்-காய். One compound and two simples. (c.) கரு-விளங்--காய். Two compounds and one simple; an anap&ae;st. (d.) கூ-விளங்-காய். A simple, a compound and a simple. 3. வஞ்சியுரிச்சீர், or வஞ்சிச்சீர். Feet peculiar to வஞ்சி verse; as (a.) தே-மா ங்-கனி. A foot of two simple syllables and one compound. (b.) புளி-மாங்-கனி. One compound, one simple, and one compound; an amphibrach. (c.) கரு-விளங்கனி. Three compounds, a tribrach. (d.) கூவிளங்-கனி. One simple and two compound syllables. 4. பொதுச்சீர். Feet of four syllables peculiar to வஞ்சி verse; there are sixteen of them; the models for these are formed by adding respectively, தண்-ணி ழல், தண்-பூ, நறும்-பூ, நறு-நிழல் to the terms employed in the உரிச்சீர். 5. ஓரசைச்சீர். A foot of a single syllable; as (a.) நாள். A foot of one simple syllable. (b.) மலர். A foot of a compound syllable.--Note. 1. One use of the last two is to end the வெண்பா verse. --Note. 2. Sometimes feet answering to காசு, instead of நாள், and பிறப்பு instead of மலர், are employed to end the வெண்பா verse, i. e., the addition of குற்றுகரம் or short உ to the foregoing; and rarely the full உ, or முற்றுகரம் is found. சீராயிருக்கிறேன். A weaver's beam, படமரம். சீர்வரிசை, s. Presents made to a married girl, or one arrived at puberty (c.) ஒருகண்டசீராய், adv. Equally, uniformly, uninterruptedly. ஒருசீரானவன், appel. n. One who maintains consistency of character, moderation of temper, &c. பலசீரும்நடக்கும். You will be hospitably entertained. Or the matter will take verious shapes. துர்ச்சீர், s. Humility is esteemed as gold, proud manners are disdained as the bad stinking of brass. தாழ, inf. used adverbially. Down, below, beneath, low. வெயில்தாழவா. Come when the heat is abated, when the sun is low. தாழவிழ, inf. To fall down. தாழவிட, inf. To drop. தாழப்போக, inf. T descend. தாழாநட்பு, s. Unfailing or undiminished love, friendship, &c. See கறையான். நிலக்கன்று, s. A young sapling. நிலக்காரை, s. A kind of thorny shrub, ஓர்முட்செடி. நிலக்காளான், s. A kind of fungus, the toadstool. நிலக்குமிழ், s. A low, thorny shrub, ஓர்செடி, Gmelina Asiatica, L. நிலக்குழி, s. A hole in the ground in which a mortar is fixed, உரற்குழி. 2. The figure of a letter marked in sand for a child to trace over, அட்சரக்குழி. நிலக்குறி, s. Sigus said to appear in the ground when certain juices are poured on it, shewing whether treasure has been buried and of what kind--a branch of நீதிசாத்திரம். நிலக்கூந்தல், s. A plant, எலிச்செவிப் பூண்டு. See கூந்தல். நிலக்கொட்டை, s. A plant, Tragia Cham&ae;lea, L. நிலக்கொதி--நிலக்கொதிப்பு, s. Heat of the ground when a little rain falls after a long drought. 2. Heat of the ground after the day is past. நிலச்சார்--நிலச்சார்பு, s. [prov.] Nature or kind of soil, பூமியின்றன்மை. 2. Character of soil as enriching its inhabitants or the contrary, நிலவளம். நிலச்சுருங்கி, appel. n. A plant, Oxalis sensitiva, L. நிலச்சூடு, s. Heat of the ground as felt by the bare feet, said to be injurious to the sight, and prejudicial to health. நிலத்தரசுகாரர், s. [prov. pl.] Proprietors of the soil; also noblemen. நிலத்தாமரை, s. [prov.] A kind of pounder for beating or smoothing a floor, a road, &c., நிலத்தைச்சமனாக்குமோர்க் ருவி. நிலந்தெளிய, inf. (as an adv.) At daybreak; (lit.) when the ground is clearly visible. நிலப்பங்கு, s. Share of land. நிலப்பனை, s. A kind of plant, ஓர்பூடு, Curculigo orchioides, L. (Roxb.) நிலப்பனைக்கிழங்கு--நிலப்பனங்கிழங் கு, s. The medicinal root of the plant. நிலப்பாகல், s. A creeper, ஓர்பாகற் கொடி, Momordica humilis, L. (R.) நிலப்பாலை, s. A plant. See பாலை. நிலப்பாவாடை, s. Production of the soil, profit of land. நிலப்பிளப்பு, v. noun. Crack, chasm formed by the sun in muddy soils. நிலப்புழு--நிலப்பூச்சி, s. A kind of worm. நிலப்பெயர்ச்சி-நிலப்பேதம், s. Change of climate, as favorable or unfavorable to health of man or beast. நிலப்பொட்டு, s. A spot made on the forehead of children by rubbing the finger on the smeared floor and touching it, மண்ணைத்தேய்த்திடுந்திலதம். 2. A kind of medicinal fungus, ஓர்காளான். நிலப்போங்கு, s. Quality of soil, good or bad, as affecting plants. நிலமகள், s. The earth as a goddess, பூமாதேவி. நிலமகன், s. The planet Mars, செவ் வாய், symbolically described as a son of பூமிதேவி. நிலமட்டம், s. Ground or water level. See நீர்மட்டம். நிலமண், s. [prov.] Earth laid down to form the floor of a house, தரையைநிரப் புமண். நிலமதிப்பு, v. noun. Estimation of land as to its value, produce, &c. நிலமயக்கம், s. Blending of different tracts of country, as the hilly, forest, &c. See திணைமயக்கம். (p.) நிலமறிதல், v. noun. Knowing the different soils for wells, &c., பூமியின்வள மறிதல். 2. Knowing the lucky side or place, in gambling. வெல்லுநிலமறிந்தவன். One knowing the point at which to place himself in order to win. நிலமிதி, s. [prov.] Peculiarity of place, climate, &c., as affecting health or disposition, இடவுரிமை. நிலமெடுத்தல், v. noun.
