aḷḷu (p. 33) கிறேன், அள்ளினேன், வேன், அள்ள, v. a. To take up a handful, lade, bale, take up in the hollow of the hand-as water, sand, grain, &c., கையான்முகக்க. 2. To sweep away as a flood, carry off in large quantities or great numbers as an epidemic, famine, thief, &c., to ravage, plunder, pillage, spoil, devastate, வாரிக் கொள்ள. (c.) அள்ளாதுகுறையாது சொல்லாது பிறவாது. If nothing be taken, nothing will be wanting; if nothing be spoken, nothing will be rumored; i. e. there is no rumor however vague, but has some truth in it. அரிசியள்ளுகிறகாகம்போலே திரிகிறான். He wanders about as greedy (of gain) as the crow is of the rice which it steals. கையையள்ளிப்போட்டது. It has grazed or taken off the skin of my hand (whether a bow, hot iron, or any thing else.) அள்ளிக்கொட்ட, inf. To take up from a quantity and shoot down elsewhere. 2. To give liberally. அள்ளிருள், s. Thick darkness, or darkness so dense that it may be grasped. அள்ளுகொள்ளை, s. Great waste, profusion, extravagance or taking more than what is right, பெருங்கொள்ளை. அள்ளு, v. noun. A handful of grain, &c., given to the man who measures, அளவுகூலித்தானியம். அள்ளெடுக்கிறவன், s. The man who receives the handful of grain for measuring. அள்ளுதல், v. noun. Being narrow, close, நெருங்கல். 2. Taking up a handful of water, rice, grain, &c., getting water in a basket, pot, &c., taking out rice, milk, &c., by a spoon from a cup, &c., அள்ளுகை. 43)

aẕi (p. 32) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், அழிய, v. n. To decay, degenerate, perish, be corrupted, ruined, wasted, blighted, effaced, obliterated, abolished, demolished, annihilated, கெட. 2. To fail (as a promise), be frustrated as a hope, &c., be refuted, தவற. அழிகரு, s. Abortion, கருவழிவு. அழிகுட்டி, s. A miscarriage, an abortion applied chiefly to brutes--the casting of the young, வயிற்றில்மரித்தது. அழிந்தோரைநிறுத்தல், v. noun. One of the eight constituent parts of virtue, அறத்துறுப்பு. அழிபுண், s. A foul ulcer, ஆறாப் புண். (M. Dic.) அழிமதி, s. Waste, extravagance, malicious intention, கெடுபுத்தி. அழிமுதல், s. Waste of property, as of capital, principal, &c. முதலழிவு. அழிம்பு, s. [vul.] The nin-payment of a debt or the non-restoration of another's property from dishonest motives, புரட்டு. 2. Ruin, devastation, injury, damage, கேடு. என்னுடையமைக்கழிம்புபேசுகிறான். He talks of destroying my property. அழிம்புசெய்ய, inf. To damage a thing. 2. To debauch a woman. அழிம்பன், s. [vul.] A spendthrift, a profligate, ஊதாரி. 2. One who makes excuses for not paying debts, restoring property, &c., புரட்டன். அழியாதபத்தினி, s. A name of D'hurupary, the wife of the Pandu princes. அழியாமுதல், s. Property devoted or entailed in perpetuity to a temple or other charity, நிலையான ஆஸ்தி. 2. God, கடவுள். அழியாமை, neg. v. noun. Incorruption, immortality, imperishableness, கெடாமை. அழிவழக்கு, s. An unjust lawsuit, a groundless prosecution, a frivolous or groundless defence, a lost lawsuit, அநி யாயவழக்கு. கற்பழியாதபெண், s. A pure virgin. அழிகை, v. noun. Destruction, decay, ruin, சிதைவு. அழிவு, v. noun. Decay, injury, ruin, loss, desolation, the act of perishing. கேடு. 2. That which has perished of itself, கெட்டது. 3. Fault, immorality, (in a restricted sense,) deviation from rule, குற்றம். அன்றுகண்டமேனிக்கழிவில்லை. Just the same appearance as before. அழிவின்மை, neg. v. noun. Freedom from decay. அழிவுகாலம், s. The time of a universal deluge and destruction at the end of an age, யுகமுடிவு. கடையழிதல், v. noun. Suffering extremely. நிறையழிதல், v. noun. Being disheartened, dispirited, without hope. 7)

uẕkku (p. 67) கிறேன், உழக்கினேன், வே ன், உழக்க, v. n. To fence, சிலம்பம்பழக. (p.) 2. v. a. To trample, tread upon, mash, injure, devastate or destroy by treading, &c., மிதிக்க. 3. (p.) To disturb, foul, stir up with the feet, கலக்க. செங்கண்மேதிகரும்புழக்கி. The red-eyed buffalo having trampled on the sugarcane-- (காரி.) சமரிலுழக்கினாலல்லது. Unless they beat down the enemy in battle-- (பார.) உழக்கு, v. noun. Trampling, treading down, மிதிப்பு. 9)

koḷḷai (p. 147) s. Robbery, plunder, pillage. devastation, depredation, sacking, பிறர்பொருளைக்கவர்கை. 2. Excess, abundance, copiousness, plenty, மிகுதி. (சது.) 3. An epidemic, a pestilence, a plague, பெருவாரி நோய்; [ex கொள்.] கொள்ளைக்கடிக்கப்போனேன். [prov.] I have been working without pay, for that bad man--spoken as an imprecation. கொள்ளைக்கும்ஊழிக்குந்தப்பு. Flee from devastating armies, and from epidemics. கொள்ளைக்குப்போனாலுங் கூட்டாகாது. One who intends to pillage, should not associate with others. கொள்ளாகொள்ளை, s. [prov.] Great abundance, plenty. கொள்ளைகொடுக்க, inf. To be plundered. 2. To allow plunder--as a general to his troops. கொள்ளைகொள்ள, inf. To plunder, to ravage, to spoil. 2. To usurp, to monopolize. 2. (p.) To engross the mind, affections, desires, &c. கொள்ளைக்காய்ச்சல், s. Epidemic fever. கொள்ளைக்காரர், s. Plunders, murderers. கொள்ளைநோய், s. As கொள்ளை. 3. கொள்ளைபோக--கொள்ளையாய்ப்போக, inf. To be plundered. கொள்ளையடிக்க--கொள்ளையாட--கொ ள்ளையிட--கொள்ளையெடுக்க, inf. To rob, plunder, sack, pillage, devastate. 2. To commit burglary. கொள்ளையாய்க்காய்க்க, inf. To yield abundantly--as trees, &c. (c.) கொள்ளையாய்க்கிடக்க, inf. To be in a state of devastation--as a town. 2. To be abundant. கொள்ளையுடைமை--கொள்ளைப்பொருள், s. Booty, spoil. ஒருகொள்ளை, s. A great abundance, or great number. See ஒரு. 22)

cuṭu (p. 193) கிறேன், சுட்டேன், வேன், சுட, v. a. To warm, heat, scald, burn, ignite, தகிக்க. 2. To roast, toast, bake, அப்பமுதலியனசுட. 3. To cauterize, brand, scar, சூட்டுக்கோலாற்சுட. 4. To burn up, consume, எரிக்க. 5. To burn as bricks, chunam, tiles or earthern wares in a kiln, காளவாயிற்சுட. 6. To imbrown by heat, வெதுப்ப. 7. To fire a gun, canon, &c., வெடிசுட. 8. (fig.) To mortify scorch the feelings--by sarcasm, reproach, &c., நிந்திக்க. 9. To blight with the eye, கண்ணூ றுபடுத்த. 1. To blight with the tongue, நாவூறுபடுத்த. 11. The wound produced by caustic language. (குற.) சுடுகலம், s. An earthen vessel, குயக் கலம். (சது.) சுடுகண், s. A fiery eye. See கொள் ளிக்கண். சுடுகாடு--சுடுநிலம், s. A place of cremation. 2. (fig.) A desert, a place where victuals cannot be got. (c.) சுடுகாட்டுமணிபொறுக்கி, s. A bird. See under காடு. சுடுகோல், s. A rod for stirring the fire in burning a corpse. 2. A brand, an iron rod, சூட்டுக்கோல். சுடுசுண்ணம், s. Burnt lime. சுடுமருந்து, s. A chemical preparation, more commonly, எரிமருந்து. சுடுவனம், s. A place for cremation. சுடுகாடு. சுட்டுக்கொட்டைப்பரப்ப, inf. To devastate a town, and sow ot with seed. (Colloq.) சுட்டசாந்து, s. As சுடுசுண்ணம். சுட்டெரிக்க, inf. To consume by burning. சுட்டசெங்கல், s. Burnt bricks, opposite to பச்சைச்செங்கல். sun-burnt-bricks. சுட்டவிறைச்சி, s. See இறைச்சி. பழுக்கச்சுட, inf. To give a bright yellow color to gold ornaments, by immersing them in a boiling solution of sulphur, saltpetre, culinary salt, and turmeric. See பழு. v. சாடுவெட்டிச்சுட, inf. To clear and burn forest land. நாவிலேசுட, inf. To brand the tongue in restoring one to caste. நாவாலேசுட, inf. To blight with the tongue, &c. சுட்டுப்போட, inf. To consume by fire; to shoot; to blight. பிள்ளையைக்கண்ணாற்சுட்டுப் போட்டார்கள்.... They have blighted (lit. burnt) the child, with their eyes; incduced sickness. விரகங்கொண்டவரைச்சந்திரன்சுடுகிறது. The moon's rays inflame the lascivious. அவன் ஊரைச்சுட்டுப்போடுவான். He will burn the country, i. e. devastate it, &c. 31)

pāẕ (p. 313) s. Desolation, devastation, dilapidation, சேதம். 2. Damage, waste, loss, நஷ்டம். 3. Corruption, decay, putrifaction, கெடுதி. 4. Abortiveness, failure, miscarriage, கருவழிவு. 5. Baseness, wretchedness, evil, அப்பிரயோசனம். 6. That which is unadorned, or naked--as the forehead without ashes, அந்தக்கேடு. 7. Insipidness, vapidness, profitlessness, வீண். 8. Emptiness, inanity, வெறுமை. 9. Non-existence, nothingness, இன்மை. 1. The vast expanse, void-space, vacuity--as the peculiar abode of Deity, ஆகாயம். 11. Vacuum of the mind, mental abstraction, &c., சூனியம்-Note. A hard consonant following this word is doubled; or its correlative nasal is substituted; the latter is the more elegant. --In Jaffna பாழ் is changed, to பாண், regularly in combination, before ஞ, ந, ம--as பாண்ஞானம், பாணாடு, பாண்மனை and improperly before க, வ, &c., பாண்கிணறு, பாண்வீடு. பாழூருக்குநரியேராசா. In a ruined town the jackal is lord பெண்ணைப்பாழிலேதள்ளினேன். I have thrown my daughter into a desert; by an unhappy marriage. பாழிலே--பாழுக்கு. In vain, to no purpose. பாழுக்கிறைக்க, inf. To labor, or spend time in vain; (lit.) to water in vain. பாழ்க்கடிக்க, inf. [v. noun. பாழ்க்கடி ப்பு.] To desolate, devastate, to reduce to ruins, பாழ்படச்செய்ய. பாழ்ங்கிணறு, s. An empty, neglected or decayed well. பாழ்ங்குடி, s. A desolate, distressed family. பாழ்ஞ்சேரி--பாழ்நத்தம், s. A decayed or deserted village. பாழ்நிலம், s. Barren land. பாழ்ந்துரவு, s. A decayed well. பாழ்ம்புறம், s. Desolated regions. பாழ்பட, inf. To be ruined, desolated, கெட. பாழ்வாயன், s. [fem. பாழ்வாய்ச்சி.] A complainer without cause. பாழ்வாய்கூற, inf. To manifest ingratitude by saying. I received nothing; to murmur. பாழ்வெளி, s. The vast expanse or vacuum in which Deity is supposed to dwell. 2. A desert or uninhabited region, மைதானவெளி. 42)
