ūr (p. 70) s. A country, a village, town, or city, புரம். ஊரறிந்தபார்ப்பான். A brahman who knows the whole country or town; i. e. a person competent for business. ஊருடன்கூடிவாழ். Prosper in the society of your fellow citizens. ஊரோடேபோய்ச்சேர்ந்தான். He arrived at home. ஊரன், s. The chief of an agricultural district, மருதத்தலைவன். (p.) ஊரவர்கள்--ஊரார், s. Inhabitants of a village, town, country, &c. 2. Others, strangers, not one's own people, அன்னியர்.--Used adjectively, the ர் is often dropped--as ஊராகாரியம், others' affairs; ஊராசொத்து, others' property; ஊ ராகாணி, others' land. ஊராருடைமைக்குப்பேராசைகொள்ளுதல்..... Coveting other men's property-துஷ்டப்பிள்ளைக்குஊரார்புத்திசொல்லுவார்கள்... An unruly child will be chastized by the magistrates. ஊரார்கையிற்கொடுக்க, inf. To deliver into another man's hand. ஊராளி, s. The ruler, magistrate, or headman of a district, ஊரதிகாரி. ஊரிலிகம்பலை, s. [prop. ஊர்கலி கம்பலை.] A village quarrel, tumult, &c. ஊரின்னிசை, s. A poem concerning the heroes of a town, or country, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். See பிரபந்தம். ஊருக்குப்போக, inf. To go to a town, to go on a journey. ஊருணி, s. A public tank accessible to all in the town, ஊரடுத்தகுளம். ஊருணிநீர்நிறைந்தற்றேயுலகவாம்பேரறிவாளன் றிரு. The wealth of one possessing great wisdom, and who is much liked by the public is like a tank filled with water to which all have access. ஊரெழுச்சி, s. Rising of citizens to present complaints to the authorities; also insurrection, ஊர்க்கலகம். ஊர்கூடுதல், v. noun. Assembling --as citizens. ஊர்கூடிச்செக்குத்தள்ளவேண்டுமா? Is it necessary that the whole city come together to turn the oilman's press? i. e. a trifling matter does not require a concourse of people. ஊர்கோலம்வர--ஊர்வலம்வர, inf. To pass about as a nuptial procession, first to the right as being auspicious, கிராமப்பிரதட்சணம்வர. ஊர்க்கதை, s. Rumor, countrytalk, ஊர்ப்பேச்சு. 2. Unfounded reports, slander, defamation, பொய்ச்செய்தி. 3. A wild, romantic story, வீண்செய்தி. ஊர்க்கலகம், s. A village quarrel, ஊரிலுண்டாகுங்கலகம். 2. One who lives contentiously with his fellow citizens shall be rooted out. (ஔவை.) ஊர்ப்பழி, s. Public censure, or blame, ஊர்நிந்தை. ஊர்ப்பாடு, s. Others' affairs-spoken of one inattentive to his own, அன்னியருடையகாரியம். ஊர்ப்புகைச்சல், s. The appearance of smoke at a distance--regarded as a calamitous omen. 2. Countrytalk, rumor, groundless report. ஊர்ப்புரட்டு, s. A great conspiracy, a monstrous fabrication of falsehood, in which one leads and takes others with him. 2. A gross falsehood. ஊர்ப்புரளி, s. Sedition, insurrection, a general commotion, ஊர்க்கலகம். ஊர்மனை, s. Habitations, a place inhabited as distinguished from a desert. ஊர்மன்று, s. A public hall, ஊரம் பலம். ஊர்வெண்பா, s. ēṉ (p. 79) . Why? what? wherefore? a change of என். 2. An affix of entreaty, இரக்கப்பொருளைத்தருமிடைச்சொல். 3. The common termination of the first person sing. in verbs and appellatives, தன்மையொருமைவி குதி.--Note. ஏன் is the common form of answering to a call. It is also in some places used as a sign affixed to the name of the contracting party in the introduction of bonds. ஏனென்பாரில்லை. No one cares (for him); i. e. to afford him relief. 2. There is no one to defend him. ஏனென்றால். For, because, if it be asked why. ஏனையா. What, sir? ஏனோதானோவென்றிருக்க. To be careless. ஏன்வந்தாய். Why did you come? வாருமேன். [vul.] Do come, I pray you-probably a corruption of வாருமே. அதையேன் இதையேனென்கிறான். He will have nothing to do with the matter. 2. He rejects both. 3. He has a dislike to every thing worldly, being disposed to become an ascetic. கூப்பிட்டாலேனென்றுசொல்லு. If you are called, answer-lit. say ஏன். நான்வருவானேன். Why should I come? அவர்கள்போவானேன். Why should they go? In the last two examples, the verb is in the gerundial form--a finite verb being understood. 98)

oṟu (p. 84) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To reduce, suppress, subject, restrain the senses, desires, &c., to mortify the body, curb the appetites, to pinch, stint or deny one's self, to suppress the passions, அடக்க. 2. To afflict, distress, cause pain to one's self or others, அலைக்க. 3. To punish, chastise, தண்டிக்க. (கு. 964.) 4. To rebuke, reprove, கடிந்துகொள்ள. 5. To dislike, to be disgusted with, வெறுக்க. (குறள்.) அகமொறுக்கும். Corn will be scarce. அவனொருத்தருக்குமொறுக்கிறதில்லை. He submits to no one's reproof; he does not brook censure. கையொறாமற்கொடுக்கிறான். He gives liberally. அன்னத்தையொறு. Abstain from taking food. சற்றும்வாயொறுக்கிறானில்லை. He does not at all restrain himself (in speaking). 2. He does not conform to the prescribed diet. உடம்பினையொறுத்துநோற்பார். Those who mortify their bodies and do penance. (ஸ்காந்.) கொடுஞ்சொற்றாயரொறுப்பவும். When the mother rebukes with sharp language-ஒறுத்துக்கொண்டிருக்க, inf. To be afflicted. விலையொறுக்க, inf.
