iḷku (p. 55) கிறது, இளகினது, ம், இளக, v. n. [prov.] To relax, abate, become pliable, flexible, to lessen in intensity or severity--as wind, rain, sun-shine, fever, &c., தணிய. 2. To become tender, indulgent, mild, yielding, placable, to relax in ardor, application, &c., நெகிழ. 3. To grow moist --as goods, &c. in rainy weather, to soften--as heated iron or other metals, to dissolve a little, be reduced in hardness, &c., to deliquesce, soak through--as tiles, கரைய. 4. To become relaxed--as a bowstring, to become loose--as screws, &c., தளர. இளகாதவன், s. A hard-hearted, inexorable person. இளகிக்காண, inf. To become limber, soft, loose, pliant, lubricous, &c., நெகிழ. 2. To appear less strict, rigid, &c.--as the mind; to become less tense. இளகினபொன், s. Soft or pure gold that easily melts, &c., the prefix is alike applicable to other metals. இளகினமனசு, s. A feeling, kind heart. 49)

uṭai (p. 59) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To break a vessel, &c.; to burst, break open, break a bank, &c.; to break lumps, clods, &c.; to break a boil, a blister, the skull or any other flat, solid or massive substance; to split, fracture, தகர்க்க. 2. To break the ranks of an enemy, to defeat, discomfit, disperse, rout, put to flight, இரிக்க. 3. To ruin, impoverish one, கெடுக்க. 4. To untwist, untwine, முறுக்கவிழ்க்க. 5. v. n. To break--as a boil, கட்டியுடைக்க.-Note. உடைய and உடைக்க are not applicable to the breaking of a tree, a branch, an arm or any other long and cylindrical body that is broken off short or asunder. For this meaning see முரிக்க, ஒடிக்க, &c. தண்ணீருடைத்துப்பாய்கிறது. The water has broken (the dam) and flows out. பல்லுடைப்பேனென்றான். He said, I will break your teeth. கட்டுடைக்க, inf. To burst an embankment--as water. பெண்மையுடைக்கும்படை, s. The weapon that dissolves female continency. தலையுடைக்க, inf. To take much pains, mentally--as in abstruse calculations, intricate business. உடைப்பு, v. noun. A breaking, a breach, the bursting of a bank, உடை க்கை. 2. s. A channel out or broken through a dam in a field, disruption, உடைந்தஅறுவாய். 3. Weakness, தளர்ச்சி. தலையுடைப்பு, v. noun. A trouble, some intricate employment. 102)

uruku (p. 65) கிறேன், உருகினேன், வேன், உருக, v. n. To dissolve with heat, to melt, liquify, to be fused, கரைய. 2. (fig.) To become tender, to melt as the heart, to be kind, be appeased, to sympathize, commiserate, pity, இரங்க. 3. To glow with love, மனங்கரைய. உருகோட்டன்பொடு. With melting love. (சித்தியார்.) நெருப்பினாலுருக்கப்பட்டவரக்குப்போலஉள்ளமுரு கி. His heart melting like wax before the fire-அரக்குப்பாவைபோலத்தேவர்களுடலுருகின. The gods whose bodies melted, through want of air, like wax statues. மனமுருக, inf. To be kind, to pity, sympathize. உருக்கம், v. noun. Melting (of heart), tenderness, pity, compassion, commiseration, sympathy, இரக்கம். 2. Tender or ardent love to a deity, or a dear friend, அன்பு. 3. Melting, உரு குகை. உருக்கங்காட்ட, s. To reduce one as a disease, to emaciate, வாட்ட. 3. To afflict, distress, வருத்த. (சத. 21.) இன்சொல்லிறைநெஞ்சுருக்கினான். By sweet speech, he melted the heart of the divinity. Solid globules of gold soldered together around a ring and worn by women as an ear-pendent, ஓராபரணம். எலும்புருக்கி, s. An emaciating disease, ஓர்வியாதி. உருக்கு, v. noun. Fusion, melting, liquifaction, உருக்குகை. உருக்கன், s. [prov.] An emaciating or stinting disease--as of men or plantains, &c., ஓர்நோய். உருக்கனடித்தல், v. noun. Stinting or blighting--as disease especially in plantains. உருக்கினம், s. A kind of arsenic, அஞ்சனபாஷாணம். 2. Any thing that facilitates the fusion of metals--as borax. புத்துருக்குநெய், s. oṭungku (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒடுங்கினேன், வே ன், ஒடுங்க, v. n. To shrink, become reduced, compressed, closed, contracted, narrow, to lessen, to abate, crouch, lie within a small compass, diminish, grow less--as a globe from the centre to the poles, அடங்க. 2. To be restrained--as the senses, desires, &c., புலனொங்க. 3. To give place, recede, pass on one side--as in meeting a superior; to shrink within one's self, showing reverence, taking off the mantle, turban, sandals, &c.; to creep along sideways, ஒதுங்க. 4. To be reduced in circumstances, power, prosperity, in show, in expenditure, in the mental or bodily faculties, energies, &c., to grow lean, be reduced in size, whether by disease, want of food, or otherwise, குறைய. 5. To cease-as noise, bustle, stir, &c., அமைய. 6. To sink or retire--as the soul in sleep, fainting, or through the different stages at death, சோர. 7. To become dissolved or involved one within another--as the elements, worlds, &c., till all is absorbed in the deity, பூதங்களொடுங்க. 8. To end, terminate, cease, முடிய. 9. To obey, submit, கீழ்ப்படிய. 1. To be concealed, பதுங்க. 11. To be packed, stowed away, செறிய. 12. To be retrenched, சுருங்க. 13. To disappear, become absorbed, dissolved--as salt in water, &c., கரைய. 14. To grow dim-as a light, a heavenly body, &c., to become extinct--as light by passing into its previous elements or ether, ஒளிமழுங்க. மாடுநுகத்தைக்கண்டொடுங்குகிறது. The ox has assumed a sickly appearance; or it shrinks at the sight of the yoke. ஊணொடுங்கவீணொடுங்கும். If his food be reduced, his dissipation will cease. உலகுதோன்றினமுறையேயொடுங்கும். The world will be reduced to its primeval elements in the order in which it was educed. ஆளொடுங்கினவேளைபார்த்துவந்தான். He watched for an opportunity and came when all was still (for plunder, &c.). கலிமுதிரமுதிரப்பெரியவர்களொடுங்கிவிட்டார்கள்... As the iron age advances, the great are reduced. ஒடுங்கலில்பல்கலை. The various sciences which are unlimited. குளிராலொடுங்க, inf. To shrink with cold. ஒடுங்கி, s. A tortoise, ஆமை. ஒடுக்கம், v. noun. Narrowness, straitness, closeness, வழியொடுக்கம். 2. Contraction into itself--as the tortoise, an elastic substance, &c., சுருங்குகை. 3. Retirement within doors, abatement, concealment by stooping and creeping along--as a man to shoot, or a tiger to spring on its prey, &c., பதுங்குகை. 4. Suppression, contraction, reduction, நெருக்கம். 5. Reverence, self-restraint, modesty, அ டக்கம். 6. Involution--as of the elements one into another, absorption, dissolution, disappearance--as of salt in water, ஒன்றிலொன்றடங்குகை. 7. Cessation (of noise, bustle, stir--as by night in time of epidemics, &c.), quietude, calmness, stillness, அமைவு. 8. Sinking as the soul through its different stages at death, gradual reduction--as of circumstances, the powers of the body by age, &c., பலமுதலியவொடுங்குகை. 9. s. End, close, termination, முடிவு. ஒடுக்கத்திலேயொன்றுமில்லை. At the end nothing (of earth) will accompany us, remain, avail, &c. அவனுக்குச்சாப்பாடொடுக்கமாய்ப்போயிற்று. His food is diminished in quantity. காரியமொடுக்கத்தில்வந்தது. The matter has resolved itself into a narrow compass. காரியமொடுக்கமாயிருக்கின்றது. The business, provision, ceremony, &c., is on a small scale. ஒடுக்கநாள், s. A day of distress. ஒடுக்கமில்லாதவன், s. One who does not restrain himself, his passions, desires, &c. 2. One who does not pay proper respect to his superiors. ஒடுக்கம்பார்த்துவர, inf. To attack a house, a city, when in a defenceless state, or by night when all are asleep. ஒடுக்கவணக்கம், s. Modest deportment, reverence, veneration. பனியொடுக்கம், s. The fall of heavy dew when all is still. காற்றொடுக்கம், s. A calm, a lull, absence of wind. புலனொடுக்கம், s. Restraint of the senses. 2. Absorption of the senses by sleep, syncope, the approach of death, &c., unconsciousness, stupor. 49)

krai (p. 96) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், ய v. n. To dissolve, melt--as salt, sugar, &c.; to be macerated in water, reduced to a liquid or slime; to relax in consistency by moisture, கரைந்துபோக. 2. To waste away as earth by rain, &c., to be washed away, மண்கரைய. 3. To be emaciated--as the body, இளைக்க. 4. To sound, make a noise, பெரிதொலிக்க. 5. To weep, cry-as a child, whine, cry aloud, அழ. 6. To call, shout, அழைக்க. 7. To tell, speak, சொல்ல. 8. To be over-ripe --as fruits, to be well ripe, become mellow, பழம்பதனழிய. அவன்கையிலிருந்தபணமெல்லாங்கரைந்துபோயிற்று. The money he had is all wasted away. கனமழைபெய்ததினாலேசுவரெல்லாங்கரைந்துபோ யிற்று. The whole wall has been washed away by the heavy rain. மகன்பட்டதைக்கண்டுமனங்கரைந்துநொந்தான்..... When he saw the sufferings of his son, he pined away through grief. கட்டிகரைந்துபோயிற்று. The tumor is reduced by external applications. ஈறுகரைகின்றது. The gum is wasting away. கரைகன்று, s. A slink calf. கரைகுட்டி, s. A slink production. கரைந்தபழம், s. A mellow ripe fruit. கரையப்பாடம்பண்ண, inf. To learn--as a lesson, &c., perfectly. சரீரங்கரைந்துபோக, inf. kuḷikai (p. 130) --குடிகை, s., A pill, a bolus, மாத்திரை. Wils. p. 294. GULIKA. and 291. GUD'IKA. தம்பிஒருரசகுளிகையாக்கும். He seems like one who has taken a magical pill. குளிகாசித்தி, s. The power of magic by means of mercurial or other pills, enabling persons to pass through the air instantaneously. குளிகைகட்ட, inf. To make, by a chemical process, pills, common or magical. 2. To consolidate--as mercury, &c., இறு கச்செய்ய. 3. To tie a pill about the body --as an amulet, or medical preventive against poisonous bites. 4. To fasten a magical pill on the body in order to obtain supernatural power, சித்திக்குளிகை கட்ட. குளிகையிட, inf. To insert a pill in an incision made in the body; to check or counteract the influence of poisonous bites, &c., or to communicate supernatural powers. குளிகையுருட்ட, inf. To roll pills. குளிகைவார்க்க, inf. To give a dissolved pill. சித்தர்குளிகை, s. A magical pill by which one is supposed to be enabled to fly where be may please, and perform supernatural feasts. தம்பனக்குளிகை, s. A magical pill by which one is supposed to be enable to suppress, or stop, the natural course of things. 14)

One without knowledge, learning, strength, vigor, property, merit of austerities, &c. சாரஞ்சுட, inf. To burn the milkhedge, prickly pear shrub, &c., to get their ashes for making lye. சாரத்தண்ணீர், s. Lye, காரத்தண்ணீர். சாரந்தெளிக்க, inf. To sprinkle lye on clothes to whiten them. சாரத்தின்சத்துரு, s. An egg, from its neutralizing qualities, முட்டை. சாரக்கட்டை, s. A temporary wall, made use of in turning an arch. (R.) சாரத்துளை, s. Scaffold-holes in a building. சாரம்போட--சாரங்கட்ட, inf. To erect a scaffolding. (c.) சாரஸ்திரி, s. [Com. சோரஸ்திரி.] A vicious woman, an adulteress, விபசாரி. (p.) சாரத்துவம், s. Adultery, விபசாரம். சாரவறுதி--சாரவிறுதி, v. noun. [prov.] Lightness, slightness--as of a blow, a fall, &c.; [ex சாரம், strength, et அறுதி or இறுதி, wanting.] சாரவறுதியாய்ப்பட்டது. It hit him but slightly. சாரவாக்கியம், s. [in astron.] A table or any tabular number in it for counting the progress of the planets.--Note.
