[in native lexicons.] The words for which synonymes of meanings are given, also the generic term of which the species are given, சொற்பயன். 6. Sound, ஒலி. 7. Eminence, உயர்ச்சி. 8. The written word, sacred writings, holy writ, as one of the three means of attaining knowledge, வேத மொழி; several kinds of உரை, or modes of explanation are given by Tamil Grammarians. The author of காரிகை has given four, viz.: 1. கருத்துரை, the main sentiment or scope of the text explained, also called தாற்பரியவுரை. 2. பதவுரை, verbal explanation, or interpretation, word by word, or clause by clause, also called கண்ணழிவுரை. 3. பொழிப்புரை, the substance of the text omitting rhetorical ornament, and adjuncts, or a free rendering of the text without interruption, also called பொழிப்புத் திரட்டுரை and பிண்டவுரை. --Note. The latter is the same as பதவுரை would be without the words of the text interspersed. 4. விரித்துரை, explanation at large, comment or exposition with proofs, illustrations, &c., also called அலகவுரை and விரியுரை; any of the preceding three, or any other kind of explanation may be included in this last. According to நன்னூல், உரை is divided into tow general classes, viz.: காண்டிகையுரை and விருத்தியுரை. 1. காண்டிகையுரை, brief exposition, or explanation of the text embracing five sub-divisions. (a) கருத்துரை, the scope of the text. (b) பதப்பொருள், verbal rendering being either as பதவுரை or as the scope and definition of பொழிப்புரை, given above, (c) உதாரணம், example for illustration. (d) வினா, anticipating objections, (lit.) proposing questions. (e) விடை, answering such objections or questions as may possibly occur. 2. விருத்தியுரை, copious or complete explanation embracing fourteen sub-divisions. 1. பாடம், giving the text or verse to be explained with different readings and choice exposition. 2. கருத்துரை, the general scope, or import of the text, as in காண்டிகை. 3. சொல்வகை, giving the parts of speech, or showing the grammatical connection when necessary to clear away obscurities. 4. சொ ற்பொருள், giving equivalent, literal words, or clauses as பதப்பொருள், in காண்டிகை, verbal renderings, &c. 5. தொகுத்துரை, a free rendering of the text as பொழிப்புரை, above. 6. உதாரணம், illustration by examples, as above. 7. வினா, anticipating objections, or raising questions as before. 8. விடை, answering such objections or giving reasons in support of the statements in the text. 9. விசேடம், special explanation, particular remarks. 1. விரிவு, supplying ellipses as of cases or otherwise. 11. அதிகாரம், determining the meaning of doubtful terms by reference to the subjects under discussion, as belonging to such a head, &c., or according to another exposition pointing out the beginning and ending of the discussion of the different subjects respectively, the opinions of different commentators. 12. துணிவு, deciding the meaning of terms concerning which there may be diversity of opinion. 13. பயன், inference, applications or recapitulation to show what is to be learnt by the text. 14. ஆசிரியவசனம், quotations, or textuary proofs from other authors. (p.) உரைகட்ட, inf. To comment on a work. உரைகாரன், s. A commentator, expositor, உரையாசிரியன். உரைக்கோள், s. The construction given by the commentator to the text, உரைகாரன்கருத்து. உரைசெய்ய, inf. To speak, declare, பேச. To make a commentary, வியாக்கியானம்பண்ண. உரைநூல், s. A work on which a commentary has been written, உரைபெற் றநூல். உரைபாடம்--உரையேடு, s. To spell, join letters. எழுத்துக்கூட்டாமல்வாசிக்க, inf. To read fluently. எழுத்துச்சந்தி, s. Union of letters in the combination of words, எழுத்துப்பு ணர்ச்சி. எழுத்துச்சாரியை--எழுத்தின்சாரி யை, s. Particles employed to express the names of the letters--as அ with the consonants; கரம், காரம் and கான் with the short letters and sometimes with the consonants; காரம் with the long vowels and கான் with ஐ and ஔ. In common use, ன is used with the short, and ஆன and அன்னா with the long letters. Some other forms are also given in ancient grammars and they are also occasionally used. எழுத்துச்சுருக்கம், s. A kind of play on letters by omitting one after another in regular succession, and thus changing the sense, ஓரணி. எழுத்துச்சேலை--எழுத்துப்புடவை, s. A woman's fancy dress whether printed or embroidered, சித்திரவஸ்திரம். எழுத்துத்திரிதல், v. noun. Permutation of letters--the change of one letter for another according to grammatical rules, for the purposes of euphony, மூவிகாரத்தொன்று. எழுத்துநடை, s. Easy and fluent reading. எழுத்துப்படிய, s. inf. To become trained--as the hand to writing; to have a settled hand. எழுத்துப்பதிக்க, inf. To indent in writing, பதியவெழுத. 2. To enter, write, imprint, settle an affair by writing. எழுத்துப்பதிய, inf. To be indented--as writing, engraving. 2. To be entered, written. எழுத்துப்பிழை--எழுத்துப்பிசகு, s. Error in spelling. எழுத்துப்பொருத்தம், s. The five classes into which the letters are superstitiously divided. (See தசப்பொருத்தம்.) 2. Choosing a name for a child so as to begin with one of the letters ascribed in astrology to the lunar mansion, under whose influence the child is supposed to have been born, பிறந்தநட்சத்திரத்திற்குப் பொருந்தப்பெயரிடுகை. எழுத்துமடக்கு, s. Repetition of, the same letter in a verse, ஓரணி--as நா நாநாதம்கூடிசைநாடுந்தொழிலேவாய். எழுத்துவருத்தனம், s. A kind of diversion by means of poetry, a play on letters, the meaning changing as letters are added. See மிறைக்கவி. எழுத்துவாசனை, s. The art of reading and writing, எழுத்துநடை. எழுத்துவேலை, s. Chintz-painting, சீலையின்மீதெழுதுகை. 2. Writing, transcribing, copying, எழுதுந்தொழில். எழுத்தொலி--எழுத்தோசை, s. The sound of a letter. நுணுக்கெழுத்து, s. A character or letter written unintelligibly. கிறுக்கெழுத்து, s. A letter erased, cancelled; a letter badly written. கூட்டெழுத்து, s. Double letters, letters written together in a contracted form--as 9 for க்க; ட்ட for ட்ட; ? for த்த, &c. நீர்மேலெழுத்து, s. An inscription on the water--a simile expressive of that which is evanescent. கல்மேலேழுத்து, s. An inscription on a stone expressive of that which is stable and enduring. நல்லோரொருவர்க்குச்செய்தவுபகாரங் கன்மேலெழுத்துப்போற்காணுமே--அல்லாத ஈரமிலாநெஞ்சத்தார்க்கீந்தவுபகாரம் நீர்மேலெழுத்திற்குநேர். Spirituality, incorporeality belonging to the spirit or intellect, as refined, purified and tending toward the deity; [ex ஆகாரம், form.] சித்துக்காரன், s. As சித்துவித்தைக்காரன். சித்துப்பறக்க, inf. To fly or pass through ether, as the சித்தர். 2. (fig.) To disappear, as a person; spoken in surprise or contempt. 3. (fig.) To carry one's self proudly, to take airs; to be supercilious. சித்துப்பொருள், s. An intelligent being, the faculty of intelligence, as in the deity or a soul--oppo. to சடப்பொருள். சித்துரூபம்--சிற்சொரூபம், s. Imbodied intelligence, a spiritual nature. 2. The deity as identified with the intellect. சித்துரூபன்--சிற்சொரூபன், s. The deity as a pure intelligence, கடவுள். சித்துவித்தை, s. As சித்து, 3. சித்துவித்தைகற்றவன்--சித்துவித்தைக் காரன், s. To show pride, to be vain, self-important, self-conceited. செருக்குப்பண்ண, inf.. To act proudly, arrogantly, wantonly. படைச்செருக்கு, s. [in cant, குழூஉக்குறி.] A tiger, புலி; குட்டிநரி, a young jackal; குள்ளநரி; a short jackal; பெருநரி, a tiger; குழிநரி, நுழைநரி, வளைநரி, a fox. நரிவாலைக்கொண்டோகிணறாழம்பார்க்கிறது. Can a well be fathomed with the tail of a jackal? இவனுக்குஅவன்நரிகாட்டுகிறான். He acts the fox toward him. எங்கும்நரிஓடுகிறது. It is over-run with jackals, i. e. desolate. நரிநிறமாயிருக்கிறான். He is shy, insincere. நரிக்காய்ச்சி, s. [prov.] A palmyra tree bearing fruit of a dim colour, ஓர்வ கைப்பனை. நரிக்குழி--நரிவளை, s. A fox-hole. நரிக்கொம்பு, s. Five kinds of delusion, or evil, on the principles of Adwitas or followers of Sankaracharya. They are: 1. தமம், the tamasa disposition--darkness, or obscurity of mind; 2. மாயை, ideality, inherent evil, personified matter; 3. மோகம், depravity, error; 4. அவித்தை, ignorance, folly; 5. அநிர்தம், that which is without, or strange, opposed to God. அதோமாயை--அசுத்தமாயை, s. Subordinate or inferior illusion, or Maya. அதோமாயையிலிருந்துபிரகிருதிதோன்றும். The female principle in nature springs from the inferior Maya. சுத்தமாயை--மகாமாயை, s. Primitive or original Maya, as காரணமாயை. மாயாகாரியம், s. The effects of Maya, its various changes, and diversifications in nature. மாயாசங்கற்பம், s. Any remarkable effect of Maya by way of creation or destruction. மாயாசத்தி, s. A power, energy, or principle which contains the five kinds of மாயை, given above. See மாமாயை. மாயாசாலம்--மாயாசித்து, s. Dissimulation, treachery, imposture. மாயாதருமம், s. Transient or deceptive merit, பொய்ப்புண்ணியம். 2. Nature or peculiarity of Maya, மாயையின்றன்மை. மாயாதர்மம், 2. The two peculiarities of Maya are: 1. சங்கோசம், contracting; 2. விகாசம், expanding. மாயாதாரகம், s. That which has Maya for a principal cause. மாயாதாரணை, s. They are five; 1. அசத்து, unreality; 2. சடம், matter; 3. அநித்தம், transientness; 4. துக்கம், distress; 5. கண்டம், division, a part. மாயாலீலை, s. Sportive illusions, as of Krishna, Siva, &c. See இலீலை. மாயாவல்லபம், s. The power or efficacy of Maya. மாயாவாதம், s. A religion whose doctrines are false, skepticism, ஓர்மதம். மாயாவாதி, s. Destroyer of Maya, and its evils. (பிரபுலிங்.) 2.
