இராகு
irāku (p. 50) s. The ascending node regarded as one of the nine planets in the form of a monstrous serpent or dragon, which, with கேது the descending node, is feigned to grasp the sun and moon and thus to cause eclipses, கரும்பாம்பு. Wils. p. 75. RAHU. இராகுகாலம், s. An inauspicious portion of time containing an hour and a half, occurring daily, being that part which is under the influence of இராகு. 7)

kētu (p. 139) s. [in mythol.] Cauda draconis (dragon's tail) or the red serpent into which the trunk of the Asura Sainhikeya, severed from the head (Rahu) by Vishnu, at the churning of the sea of milk, was changed; and which, with Caput draconis, is said to swallow the sun and moon for betraying them. This causes eclipses. 2. [in astron.] The descending node, supposed by most of the Hindu astronomers to be one of those heavenly bodies rarely visible. 3. A mark, a sign, a symbol, அடையாளம். 4. cantiraṉ (p. 159) s. Chandra, the moon as a planet or deity, திங்கள். (c.) 2. [in combination.] A pre-eminent or dignified personage--as இராமச்சந்திரன். சந்திரனைப்பார்த்துநாய்குலைத்தாற்போல. As if the dog had barked at the moon, i. e., mere chatter to no purpose. சந்திரகணம், s. One of the four auspicious feet with which to begin a poem --consisting of one நிரை and two நேர். See கணம். (p.) சந்திரகதி--சந்திரபுத்தி, s. The daily motion of the moon. சந்திரகலை, s. The phases of the moon. 2. The breath of the left nostril. (c.) See சூரியகலை. சந்திரகாந்தம்--சந்திரகாந்தச்சிலை, s. A kind of mineral gem, the moon-stone, said to emit moisture, when placed in the moon-light; and believed by some to be a congelation of the moon's rays. See சூரியகாந்தம். சந்திரகாந்திப்பூ, s. A moon-flower, a flower which turns towards the moon. சந்திரகாவி, s. A kind of radish color made from the செநதுருக்கம் flower or Bastard saffron. Carthamus tinctorius. Ains. v. 2. p. 364. 2. A reddish ochre, செங்காவிமண். 3. A kind of red cloth, ஓர்வகைப்புடவை. (c.) சந்திரகாவிப்பட்டு, s. Silk of a red colour. சந்திரகிரகணம், s. A lunar eclipse. See கிரகணம். சந்திரகும்பம், s. A sacred water-pot dedicated to the moon. See கும்பம். சந்திராதித்தர்--சந்திரசூரியர், s. The sun and moon. (c.) சந்திராதித்தருள்ளவரைக்கும். As long as the sun and moon exist. சந்திரசூடன்--சந்திரசேகரன், s. Siva, the moon crested. சந்திரதரிசனம், s. The first sight of the New Moon on an auspicious evening.-Note. If the time be not auspicious, the sight is avoided. 2. The ceremony of showing either the crescent or full moon to a child, for the first time, on an auspicious evening. சந்திரப்பிரவை, s. A black serpent, இராகு; the dragon's head or ascending node, in Astronomy. சந்திரபீசம், s. The cochineal insect. சந்திரபுடம், s. Moon's longitude. சந்திரமண்டலம், s. The orb or disk of the moon, சந்திரவிம்பம். 2. The moon's halo, பரிவேடம். 3. [in the human body.] The head and the shoulders. (p.) சந்திரமத்திம்புத்தி, s. [in astron.] The mean motion of the moon in a fixed time --as a day, an hour, &c. சந்திரமானம், s. [in astron.] A calculation made from the motion of the moon in its orbit. See சாந்திரமானம். சந்திரமந்தோச்சம், s. [in astron.] The moon's apsis. சந்திரமுருகு, s. An ear ornament shaped like the crescent moon. (c.) சந்திரமோலி--சந்திரமௌலி, s. Siva, the moon crested. There are other compounds--as திங்கண்மோலி, மதிமோலி, &c. சந்திரரேகை--சந்திரலேகை, s. The moon's digits. சந்திரரோகம், s. A kind of leprosy, [in the gospels] lunacy, ஓர்குட்டம். (c.) சந்திரலவணம், s. A medicinal salt, Rock salt, இந்துப்பு. சந்திரலோகம், s. The region or sphere of the moon. சந்திரவட்டம், s. One of the three umbrellas of Argha. சந்திரவட்டக்குடை, s. A large white umbrella used in processions. சந்திரவருஷம்--சந்திரனாண்டு, s. Lunar year. சந்திரவமிசம், s. The lunar race, the race of kings from Chandra, his son Buddha, his son Purúravas, &c. சந்திரவலயம்--சந்திரவளையம், s. [prov.] A brass ring filled with pebbles and used as a small tabour. They are held one on each thumb, by public singers, கைச்சிலம்பு. சந்திரவாதம், s. A system of religion in which the moon is god. சந்திரவிம்பம், s. The disk of the moon. சந்திரனாள்--சந்திரனாட்கூறுபாடு, s. The phases of the moon, திதி. சந்திரோதயம், s. Moon-rise. (c.) 107)

To coat the soles of a lady's feet with red cotton. (p.) செம்படாம், s. Red cloth, red vestments; [ex படாம்.] செம்படிகம், s. Red crystal. (M. Dic.) செம்படை, s. [prov.] Reddishness of hair, &c. (used in jaffna.) செம்பட்டை, s. As செம்படை. (c.) செம்பட்டைத்தலை, s. A red head. செம்பட்டைமயிர்--செம்பட்டமயிர், s. Red or golden hair. செம்பட்டு, s. Red silk, சிவந்தபட்டு. செம்பண்ணை, s. Cock's comb, காவற் பண்ணை. செம்பரத்தை--செவ்வரத்தை, s. The shoe-flower shrub. [loc. சப்பாத்துச்செடி.] செம்பருத்தி, s. The cotton plant with red flowers. செம்பருந்து, s. The red kite with a white neck. (p.) செம்பலகை, s. Brick-stone, செங்கல். (p.) செம்பவளச்சம்பா, s. A kind of reddish rice. செம்பழம், s. [prov.] Fruit turning yellow or red as it ripens. See செங்காய். செம்பாகம், s. A moiety, half, an equal share, சரிபாகம். 2. The natural construction, unforced meaning of a passage, word, &c. 3. A natural, flowing and easy style in writing. See பாகம். காமத்திற்செம்பாகமன்று. In coition, unequal desire of the two. (குறள்.) செம்பாடு, s. [prov.] Red soil. (See செங்காடு.] 2. Any thing soiled or tinged with red earth, செம்மண்ணடைந்தது. செம்பாட்டுத்தரை--செம்பாட்டுமண், s. [prov.] As செம்மண். செம்பாதி, s. An exact half, சரிபாதி. செம்பாம்பு, s. Kéthu the descending node, as the red tail of the dragon, கேது. See செந்நாகம். செம்பரைமீன், s. A kind of fish. செம்பால், s. Blood, இரத்தம். (சது.) Compare சீம்பால். செம்பாளை, s. [prov.] A reddish kind of paddy, ஓர்நெல். செம்பிரால், s. [vul.] The name of a red fish, ஓர்மீன். செம்புளிச்சை, s. A kind of red Hibiscus canabinus. See புளிச்சை. செம்புறைக்கல், s. As செம்பூரான்கல். (R) செம்புலி, s. A tawny colored tiger. செம்புனல், s. Blood; (lit.) red fluid. (p.) செம்பூரான்--செம்பூரம், s. A species of red centiped, See பூரான். செம்பூரான்கல், s. [com. செம்புராங் கல்.] A kind of stone resembling the color of the centiped, laterite. செம்பொடி, s. Red sand or powder, செம்மணல். செம்பொன், s. Fine gold, பொன். 2. One of the kinds of gold, that of reddish color. See பசும்பொன். (p.) செம்பொன்மலை, s. Mount Meru. 2. (R.) A mountain producing copper, செம்புமலை. (p.) செம்மணல், s. Red sand. செம்மணி, s. A ruby, மாணிக்கம். 2. The name of different kinds of red stones--as பதுமராகம், செம்பு, குருவிந்தம், குருந்தக்கல், மாம்சகந்தி. 3. Red beads, சிவப்புமணி. 4. [prov.] One of the circles about the pupils of the eye. செம்மண், s. Red earth, red soil. (c.) செம்மந்தாரை, s. A tree, ஓர்பூமரம். செம்மயிற்கொன்றை--செம்மயிற்கொண் டை, s. A plant, ஓர்பூஞ்செடி. செம்முருங்கை, s. A red species of முருங்கை tree. See முருங்கை. செம்முள்ளி, s. A species of முள்ளி plant, Barleria prionitis, L. செம்மூக்கன், s. [prov.] A species of alligator, ஓர்முதலை. 2. A kind or rat, ஓரெலி. (M. Dic.) செம்மொழி, s. Right words, proper sentiments, good advice, &c. 2. [in philos.] Words in their natural order. செம்மொழிச்சிலேடை, s. [in log.] Ambiguity, a verse allowing two different constructions--as வேதனைக்கூற்றைத்தவிர்க் கும். It will remove many afflictions, or it will remove Brahma (birth) and Yama (death.) செம்மேனி, s. A copper colored body, சிவந்தமேனி. 6)

tṭṭāṉ (p. 222) s. (fem. தட்டாத்தி.) Gold and silversmiths, பொற்கொல்லன். 2. A butterfly, ஓர்ப்பூச்சி. 3. A plant. (See கோஷ்டம்.) 4. Another plant, தட்டான் கொ ட்டோசை--as புடோல. தட்டானுஞ்செட்டியும்போலே. Like the goldsmith and merchant, i. e. quarrelling. தெறிக்க அடித்த தட்டானைப்போலே. As the goldsmith, from whom the piece of gold that he was beating, has whirled away. தட்டான்கொட்டோசை, s. A plant. See தட்டான். தட்டான்பூச்சி, s. [prov.] A millerinsect, dragon fly. 34)
நாகம்
nākam (p. 273) s. The cobra-de-capella of hooded snake, நல்லபாம்பு; 2. A naga, or demigod, having a human face, with the tail of a serpent, and the expanded neck of the cobra. The race is said to inhabit a region called Patala or நாகலோகம், under the earth. 3. Lead, நயம். 4. Black lead, காரியம். 5. The black monkey, கருங்குரங்கு. 6. Monkey in general, குரங்கின்பொது. 7. An elephant, யானை. 8. A tree. See புன்னை. 9. Fragrant herb, as ஞாழல். 1. A medicinal tree, ஓர் மருந்துமரம். 11. An astrological karna, ஓர் கரணம். W. p. 458. NAGA. 12. (Sa Naka.) The visible heavens, ether, sky, atmosphere, ஆகாயம். 13. Swerga or the Indian paradise, சுவர்க்கம். 14. A kind of prepared arsenic, நாகபாஷாணம். 15. A kind of precious stone, நாகப்பச்சை. 16. A mountain, மலை. See நாகு. 17. Fine cloth, நற்றூசு.--Note. Of the நாகம் snakes there are said to be of different castes as among men; being four chief, and one inferior caste; which differ in form, motion, food and habits. அஷ்டநாகம், s. The eight famed serpents of the nether world employed at the eight cardinal points to support the earth are: 1. வாசுகி. 2. அனந்தன். 3. தக்ஷ கன். 4. சங்கபாலன். 5. குளிகன். 6. பதுமன். 7. மகாபதுமன். 8. கார்க்கோடன். To these the thousand headed ஆதிசேக்ஷன், king of the race, supporting the earth at the centre is sometimes numbered as a ninth. நாககள்ளி, s. A kind of recumbent shrub, ஓர்கள்ளி. நாககன்னி--நாககன்னிகை, s. Female of the naga race, especially a wife of Arjuna. நாகசாபம், s. Curse of the cobra. inflicted on a person for killing it. See நாகப்பிரிதஷ்டை. நாகசின்னம்--நாகசுரம்--நாகஸ்வரம். s. [com. நாகசரம்.] A kind of pipe or clarionet, one of the chief musical instruments, ஓர்துளைக்கருவி. நாகதத்துவம், s. One of the qualities of women ஸ்திரீகுணத்தொன்று. நாகதம்பிரான்--நாகதேவன், s. [prov.] the cobra snake regarded as a god, properly applied to ஆதிசேஷன், the chief of the nether world. See நல்லதம்பிரான். நாகதாளி, s. A species of தாளி, the root of which is used by snake dancers-the snake drawing back its head, and retiring when it is presended; also deemed an antidote to snake bites, Cacumis anguinus, L. நாகதாளிகள்ளி, s. A plant fed on by the silvestre or cochineal insect. Oblong Indian fig. (Ains.) நாகதிசை, s. West point, மேற்கு. நாகதீபம், s. A lamp in the form of a five headed cobra, ஐந்தலைவிளக்கு. நாகதேவி--நாகம்மா, s. The cobra, as a goddess. நாகநாதன்--நாகநாயகன், s. Indra, இந்திரன். 2. As நாகதேவன். நாகபடம், s. The spread and figured neck of the cobra, பாம்பின்படம். 2. [com. நாகவடம்.] An ear ornament in imitation of the spread neck of the cobra, ஓர்கா தணி. நாகபட்டணம், s. The town of Negapatam, ஓரூர். நாகபந்தம், s. One of the சித்திரகவி or curious kind of poems. நாகபாசம், s. [in mythol.] A kind of snake-like rope, with a noose or knot, and having life. It is obtained of the gods by austerities; and in war sent to entwine itself about the foe, பாம்புருவமான படைக்கலம். நாகப்பச்சை, s. A precious stone. See ஆற்றுப்பச்சை. நாகப்பற்று--நாகவாடை, s. Alloy of zine in silver, துத்துநாகப்பிடிப்பு. நாகப்பாம்பு, s. The cobra. நாகப்பிரதிஷ்டை, s. The making of a five headed cobra and worshipping it, to expiate the sin of killing a cobra by the person or his ancestors, which it is supposed prevents offspring. நாகப்பிரம்பு, s. A kind of rod in the shpe of a snake, ஓர்பிரம்பு. நாகப்பூ--நாகம்பூ, s. The flowers of the நாகம் tree, used medicinally; also called சிறுநாகப்பூ. நாகப்பூச்சி, s. A worm, an earth-worm, also called பூநாகம், by native doctors, who make of it several preparations. நாகமணல், s. Sand containing lead. நாகமணி--நாகரத்தினம், s. The gem supposed to be found in the head of the cobra. See ஐந்தலைநாகம். நாகமரம், s. A kind of red tree. நாகமல்லி--நாகமல்லிகை, s. A medicinal species of the மல்லிகை, used for dying black. The root forms a drug, White flowered justicia, Justicia nasuta, L. நாகமோடி, s. [with வேஷ்டி or சேலை.] A cloth with serpentine stripes, ஓர்பு டவை. நாகம்பூ, s. See நாகப்பூ. நாகராசா, s. The chief of the nagas, ஆதிசேடன். நாகலோகம், s. Swerga, தேவலோகம். 2. The world or region of the nagas under the earth, கீழுலகத்தொன்று. நாகவடம், s. See நாகபடம். நாகவராளி, s. A kind of tune, ஓரிரா கம். நாகவல்லி--நாகவள்ளி, s. A betel plant, வெற்றிலைக்கொடி. 2. [also நாகவல்லி முகூர்த்தம்.] The finishing ceremony of a marriage on the fifth day, கல்யாணச்ச டங்கிலொன்று. நாகவாடை, s. In gold coin, a slight alloy, supposed to be contracted from the metal of the mould, செம்பூறல். நாகவாய், s. An instrument used by turners, ஓர்கடைச்சற்கருவி. நாகாசனன், s. The Brahmany-kite, whose food is snakes; [ex அசனம், food.] நாகாத்திரம்--நாகாஸ்திரம், s. A dart, as நாகபாசம். நாகாந்தகன், s. Garuda, as the devourer of snakes, the vehicle of Vishnu, கருடன்; [ex அந்தகன்.] நாகாபரணம், s. An ornament in form of a cobra, worn by Siva, சிவனணியி னொன்று. நாகாபரணன், appel. n. Siva. சிவன். நாகாலயம், s. The inferior world or abode of the nagas. நாகேந்திரன், s. The cobra--as a deity. பைந்நாகம், s. A cobra. See பை. பறவைநாகம், s. A winged serpent, a flying dragon. 20) *

vli (p. 377) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், வலிய, v. n. To be excited, stimulated, முயல. 2. To venture, துணிய. 3. To stay, தங்க. 4. v. a. To force, பலவந்தமாக. வலிந்தகருத்து, s. A forced meaning. (p.) வலிந்துகோடல், v. noun. [lit. drawing by force.] Interpreting verses by farfetched meanings, forcing upon a passage, a meaning not obvious; such meaning is called, வலிந்துகோடற்பொருள். வலிய, inf. [as adv.] Voluntarily, freely, spontaneously, gratuitously, தானாக. 2. [as adj.] Strong, as வலு. வலியச்சண்டைக்குவருகிறது. Quarrelling with one unnecessarily. வலியத்தலைதந்தான். He has given himself [his head] willingly, to the business. வலியசர்ப்பம்-வலுசர்ப்பம், s. A strong serpent, a dragon. வலியவன், s. A strong man. 2. A rich man--oppos. to எளியவன். வலியவன்வெட்டினதுவாய்க்கால். The channel made by a man in power is the water-course. 15)
