arumai (p. 26) s. Rareness, scarceness, scantiness, அபூர்வம். 2. Preciousness, desirableness, pre-eminence. மேன்மை. 3. Difficulty, laboriousness, வருத்தம். 4. Impossibility, unattainableness, கூடாமை. 5. Delicacy, சிறப்பு.--Note. As an adjective, மை is dropped before a consonant with a change of that, when required in combination, and அரு may be changed into அரிய with or without து, or the last vowel may be dropped, and the first lengthened as in ஆருயிர், precious life. அருங்கலைநாயகன், s. Buddha, the lord of eminent sciences, புத்தன். அருங்கலைவினோதன், s. one devoted to learning; one whose time is spent in cultivating the arts and sciences. அருங்கிடை, s. Extreme hunger from long abstinence, &c., பட்டிணி. அருங்கிடைகிடக்க, inf. To be in a starving condition. அருங்கேடன், s. One who is imperishable, who will always prosper. (குறள்.) 2. (c.) Rigid austerities. அருந்தவர், s. Ascetics. அருந்தூதன், s. A tormentor, one who inflicts pain, வேதனைசெய்வோன். அருமருந்து, s. Nectar, அமிர்தம். In classical works, this in the form அருமருந்தன்னபிள்ளை is contracted to அருமந்த, precious as nectar, as, அருமந்தபிள்ளை. A very dear child, அருமந்ததேர். A very costly chariot. அருமறை, s. The sacred Vedas. Ell. 145. 4. அருமறைக்கொடியோன், s. A name of Dronácharya, the military preceptor of the Pandavas and Kurus, because of the Vedic device on his banner. அருமைப்படுத்த, inf. To make scarce, hard, difficult. 2. To impart reluctantly, make much of. அரும்பண்டம், s. A rare article, choice wares, valuable commodity. அரும்பிணி, s. An incurable disease. (நாலடி.) Ell. 118. அரும்பூட்டு, s. [prov.] A girdle, waist-string, necklace, &c., so short as scarcely to be brought to meet, a string, rope, &c., so short as to be tied with difficulty, a bow-string so short as to be liable to break if brought up too far, any thing too little, too short, too narrow, &c., எட்டாப்பூட்டு. 2. Difficulty in settling a negotiation, agreement, &c., இணக்கக்கூடாமை. 3. Entanglement, ensnarement, மோசத்திலகப்படுகை. 4. Forced connection in language, clauses disconnected or not joined naturally, difficult or unnatural; construction, தொடர்ச்சி யின்மை. சொற்களையரும்பூட்டாய்த் தொடுத்துப்பேசினான். He spoke in an unconnected manner. அரும்பொருள், s. Excellent advice, hard doctrine, a rare or difficult meaning. 2. A choice or precious article. அருவினை, s. A great sin. அருவினைகளைந்து. The five great sins. தெய்வமொருவனென்றேத்தி யொருமித்திருந்தால் அருவினைகளைந்துமறும். The five great sins will be forgiven him who worships the one God with singleness of heart. (கம்பன்.) 5)

oṟu (p. 84) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To reduce, suppress, subject, restrain the senses, desires, &c., to mortify the body, curb the appetites, to pinch, stint or deny one's self, to suppress the passions, அடக்க. 2. To afflict, distress, cause pain to one's self or others, அலைக்க. 3. To punish, chastise, தண்டிக்க. (கு. 964.) 4. To rebuke, reprove, கடிந்துகொள்ள. 5. To dislike, to be disgusted with, வெறுக்க. (p.) 6. v. n. To become scarce and dear, to fail or be scanty--as crops, rain, &c., to be sparing, குறைய. கொலையிற்கொடியாரைவேந்தொறுத்தல். Punishing the guilty by death--the prerogative of a prince. (குறள்.) அகமொறுக்கும். Corn will be scarce. அவனொருத்தருக்குமொறுக்கிறதில்லை. He submits to no one's reproof; he does not brook censure. கையொறாமற்கொடுக்கிறான். He gives liberally. அன்னத்தையொறு. Vehemence, impetuosity, forcibleness, furiousness, மூர்க்கம். 4. Rapidity, speed, haste, velocity, விரைவு. 5. Hardness, tenacity, firmness, roughness, ruggedness, கடினம். 6. Excessiveness, intensity, immoderateness, vastness, exorbitancy, flagrancy, atrocity, malignity, heinousness, desperateness, மி குதி. 7. Ferocity, savageness, furiousness, violence, கோபம். 8. Strength, powerfulness, வன்மை. 9. Cutting in language, offensiveness, satiricalness, injuriousness, குரூரம். The leading character of this word in its different meanings is intensity. (See கொடுமை.) From this word id derived the symbolic verb கடிது. (3d person sing.) It is severe, &c., with any of the meanings of கடுமை. கடிசு, v. noun. Being too perpendicular, too little bent-- as a hoe, adze, &c., to the handle, or a plough-share to the shaft, நிமிர்வு--opp. to தணிசு. கடிச்சை, s. Niggardliness, உலோ பகுணம். கடிச்சைக்காரன், s. A niggard, a penurious man. கடியது, the neuter appellative.) That which is severe. கடியமோசம், s. Imminent danger. கடியவார்த்தை, s. Hard or angry words, offensive terms or language. கடியன், s. A severe, cruel man. கடுங்கணாளர், s. Cruel, savage, barbarous persons, கொடியோர். கடுங்கண், s. Cruelty, severity, barbarousness, unmercifulness, கொடுமை. 2. [prov.] The scallop of a palmyra leaf in a கோலுபட்டை, cut too closely, ஒலைக்கண். கடுங்கருத்து, s. Abstruse idea, farfetched unnatural meaning, கடமையானக ருத்து. கடுங்காய், s. [prov.] Unripe fruit, பழாதகாய். கடுங்காய்நுங்கு, s. Palmyra fruit, the kernel or pulp of which is too far advanced to be eatable, முதிர்ந்தநுங்கு. கடுங்காய்ச்சல், s. Violent fever, மிகுசுரம். 2. v. noun. Being over-heated-as by the smith, அதிககாய்ச்சல். 3. Being dried or scorched much in the sun, வெ யிலிலதிகமாய்க்காய்தல். கடுங்காய்ச்சலாக்காய்ந்துபோயிற்று. (The corn, &c.), is all scorched (not irrecoverably) by the sun and want of water, rain, &c. கடுங்காரநீர், s. An egg, முட்டை. கடுங்காரம், s. A powerful caustic, ஓர்வகையெரிமருந்து. 2. A strong breeze, a furious wind, a tempest, அதிககாற்று. கடுங்கூர்மை, s. Being sharp, அ திககூர்மை. 2. Salt from sesamum, கடுந்தி லாலவணம். 3. Salt of sulphur, கந்தகவுப்பு. 4. Sea salt, கடலுப்பு. கடுங்கூர்மைலவணம், s. Salt from urine, அமரியுப்பு. கடுங்கோடை, s. A severe drought, முதிர்வேனில். கடுங்கோபம், s. Violent anger. கடுஞ்சினப்பூமி--கடுந்தழற்பூமி, s. As if a dead cow be presented to a ruined brahman; said of an unprofitable pursuit by an incompetent person. கெட்டும்பட்டணஞ்சேர். Though to be ruined, go to the town. தரித்திரங்கெடும்படி. That the misery of poverty may cease. ஈற்றுயிர்மெய்கெடும். The final compound letter is dropped. கெடுகுடிசொற்கேளாது. A family given up to ruin will never listen to advice. கெட்டகுடியேகெடும். A ruined family will sink more and more. கெடுகாலம், s. A time of ruin, evil, drought, &c.; also used reference to retribution of evil deeds which is to come immediately. கெடுமதி, s. Like that and similar abstract nouns, it drops the termination and combines with other nouns as an adjective, according to rule. வறுமைகொடிது. Poverty is cruel. வயிற்றுக்கொடுமையினால்வருந்துகிறான். To cease to flow, as the menses; to be obstructed in its course, as water; to be stopped, as a floating thing or a car; to be fixed as substance between the teeth; to adhere, or inhere, தடைபட. 4. Stopping, halting; impediment, a pleonastic form. See தரி. தங்குதுறை, s. [prov.] A port at which a vessel touches. தங்குவலை, s.
