To sweep the sacred precincts of a temple as one of the duties of the சரிதைக்காரன், or religionist of the lowest degree in the Siva system, கோயிலலகிட. அலகுகட்ட, inf. To bind (charm) the mouth of a serpent, a dog, &c. 2. To charm a weapon to prevent its cutting, &c. 3. To settle an account. அலகுகழிக்க, inf. To subtract or deduct a number in reckoning with kernels, seeds, &c. அலகுகிட்டுகை, v. noun. Having the lock-jaw. அலகுகூடை, s. A basket made of twigs closely twisted together, used to draw water. அலகுநிலை, s. The result of a reckoning, as the sum in addition, product in multiplication, &c. அலகுநிறுத்தல், v. noun. Placing a sword upright. This is a ceremony performed in the pagoda of துரோபதை, before the festival in honor to her is commenced. A sword is set up--the point downwards-- on the side of a vessel filled with water, and if it does not move, they think that the ceremony will be attended with success. This is also done in private houses. அலகுபருப்பு, s. A kind of pea. அலகுபனை, s. The long, flat leaved palmyra, Borassus flabelliformis, L. அலகுபாக்கு, s. Betel-nut sliced thin and boiled in water in which its husk has been boiled, giving it a reddish hue. அலகுபோட, inf. To perform a penance, in which the tongue is pierced with an iron wire, strings are drawn through the sides of the loins, or the breast cut with a knife. (c.) அலகுப்பூட்டு, v. noun. Closing the mouth in penance. அலகுவிறைப்பு, v. noun. Becoming cold and stiff as the jaws in childbirth, fits, hunger, &c. வேப்பலகு, s. The rib or small stalk of the leaves of the margosa tree. திருவலகு, s. A broom used in pagodas. சோற்றலகு, s. A sort of rice strainer, made of ribs of palm leaves. 23)

aḷvu (p. 33) s. Measure, degree, proportion, quantity, magnitude, size, capacity, bound, limit, compass, number, standard, வரையறை. 2. The proper or required measure, the complement number, size, weight, &c., மட்டு. 3. With உம், it expresses a limited extent of measure, time, distance, &c., as அவ்வளவும், only so far, even so much. 4. Suffixed to participles, it means when, as soon as--as பார்க்குமளவில், as soon as seen. 5. A measure or thing to measure with, அளவுகருவி. There are four kinds of measurement; viz.: 1. எண்ணல், computation. 2. எடுத் தல், weight, measurement by balance. 3. முகத்தல், measurement of capacity--as dry of fluid measure. 4. நீட்டல், measurement of extension, a long measure and land measure.--Some add a fifth தெறித்தல், jerking with finger. இராசா அளவிற்கேறிற்று. It has gone up to (the limit of) the king; i. e. it is too late now to adopt measures to prevent it. காரியத்தளவிலேயொன்றுமில்லை. There is no importance in the thing--it matters not. குலத்தளவேயாகுங்குணம். According to the caste will be the disposition. அவன்வருமளவும். Till he comes. மேகமண்டலமளவும். As high as, or as far as the region of the clouds. என்னளவிலேயிப்படிநடந்தது. It has so happened to me; at least in my case, &c. தன்னளவிலே கொண்டாடிக்கொண்டான். He limited the feast to his own circle. அளவடி, s. A line containing four metrical feet, நாற்சீரால்வருமடி. அளவடிவிருத்தம், s. A விருத்தம் verse of four lines, each of which contains four feet, நேரடிவிருத்தம். அளவழித்தாண்டகம், s. A kind of poem, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். அளவறுக்க, inf. To find out, ascertain a number and decide, வரையறுக்க. அளவற்றது--அளவில்லாதது. appel. n. That which is beyond number, measure, weight, &c. அளவாக, inf. [used adverbially.] Moderately, to a limited extent, according to. அளவிட, inf. To estimate, calculate. 2. To guess, conjecture. 3. To measure, explore, fathom. 4. To investigate, examine, search into. அவனை அளவிடக்கூடாது. One cannot fathom him. அளவிடப்படாத, neg. rel. part. Incomprehensible. அளவிடை, v. noun. Measuring, admeasurement, அளவிடுகை. 2. Estimation, calculation, guess, மதிப்பிடுகை. 3. s. Weight, நிறை. 4. Capacity, extent of one's power. நிருவாகம். சத்துருவையளவிடைபார். Estimate an enemy's power. அளவியற்றாண்டகம், s. A kind of poem. அளவிறக்க, inf. To exceed the measure, the appointed limit, &c., எல் லைகடக்க. 2. To transgress, violate a rule, மீற. 3. To exceed all bounds, be immeasurable, inconceivable, எண்ணிறக்க. அளவிறந்தபொருள், s. Immense property beyond the power of calculation, a thing incomprehensible, a mystery. அளவின்மை, neg. v. noun. Immeasurableness, countlessness, immensity. அளவுகோல், s. A land measurer's rod. அளவுநாழி, s. A stamped measure. அளவுபடுத்த, inf. To measure, ascertain, to limit. அளவெடுக்க, inf. To take a measure, dimensions, &c., of a thing. அவ்வளவு--இவ்வளவு, s. So much, so many. அவ்வளவும், Even so much, only of far, that is all. எவ்வளவு, s. How much, how many. நேற்றளவு. Up to or till yesterday, in the course of yesterday. நேற்றையளவிலேசெய்தியிப்படி. The news were so up to yesterday. இன்றளவும். Until this day, in the course of to-day. 14)

A contracted form of the negative gerund, எதிர்மறை வினையெச்சவிகுதி--as உண்ணா வந்தான்; for உண்ணாமல்வந்தான், he came, not having eaten. 12. A contracted form of the neg. rel. participle, எதிர்மறைப்பெயரெச்ச விகுதி--as ஓடாக்குதிரை, for ஓடாதகுதிரை, a horse that will not run. 13. A poetic form of the gerund, வினையெச்சவிகுதி--as பாராவணங்காமகிழ்ந்தான், he saw, worshipped and rejoiced;--பாராவணங்கா for பார்த்துவண ங்கி. 14. A neg. particle which may be expressed or understood before the termination of any verb except the neut. plural--as நடவாதான், he will not walk; நட வாய், you will not walk, &c. 15. A poetic contraction of ஆறு, way or manner--as, யான்வந்தவாசென்றியம்புதியேல், if you will go and give information of my arrival. 16. A poetic name of the ஆச்சாமரம். 17. One of the letters on which to exercise the voice in singing, running through the notes of the octave--a musical mode, இசையிலோசை. 18. A prefix to Sanscrit words--as, ஆகன் னம், ஆசட்சு. ஆ கெட்டேன். Ah! I am undone. ஆ கொடுப்பாய். Oh! thou wouldst give thyself--i. e. thyself and thy family--to Yama the god of death; [vul.] generally used by women. ஆதீண்டுகுற்றி--ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, s. ācciramam (p. 37) s. Hermitage, the residence of an ascetic, முனிவரிருப்பிடம். 2. Religious condition as prescribed especially for the Brahmans, including four degrees or orders, நிலை; viz.: 1. பிரமசாரி யாச்சிரமம், the state or condition of a bachelor, who, from the time of his investment with the sacred cord, is required to tend the sacred fires and to follow his studies under or in the presence of his preceptor. 2. கிரகஸ்தாச்சிரமம், the state of a house-holder, who, from his marriage, must strictly observe his religious duties, maintain the sacred fires, and liberally practise hospitality for the support of the other three orders. 3. வானப்பிரஸ்தாச் சிரமம், the state of an anchorite or recluse, who, with or without his wife, relinquishes domestic life, retires to the desert feeding on leaves, roots and fruits, or on the hospitality of the second order, and continues to perform his daily rites. 4. சன்னியாசியாச்சிரமம், the state of a religious mendicant who performs no rite whatever and lives only on alms, sometimes appearing in a state of nudity.
