Superintendent, director, ruler, master, one in authority, a superior, மேல்விசாரணைக் காரன். அதிகாரி--அதிகாரிகன் s. [in philosophy, literature, &c.] The persons, for whom a work is written, as it regards competency, eligibility, worthiness, &c., as the ஞானநூல் for such as act up to the prescribed rules. The persons are three, கருமகாண்டி, பத்திகாண்டி, ஞானகாண்டி, who are the principal, and the following eight who are subordinates, கருமி, முமூட்சு, அப்பியாசி, அனுபவி, ஆரூடன், விவேகி, விரத்தன், தேவகதியன். 54) *

āṟu (p. 43) s. and adj. Six (6.) six things, ஓரெண். 2. As a prefix to words beginning with consonants, the initial is often shortened, especially when the number is specific--as அறுசுவை, the six flavors. (c.) அவ்வாறு. Six by six, six to each, six of each. அறுகுணன், s. The deity--he who possesses the six attributes, கடவுள்; [ex குணம், quality.] (p.) அறுகோணம், s. A hexagon. 2. A magical diagram of two equilateral triangles, one laid over the other so that their sides may be parallel, making six outward and six inward angles. அறுசமயம், s. The six systems of religion maintained by Hindus. See சமயம். அறுதொழிலோர், s. Brahmans-from the six duties prescribed to them, வேதியர். See தொழில், office. அறுபகை, s. The six hurtful propensities--as காமம், &c. See பகை. அறுபருவம், s. The six seasons of the year--as கார், கூதிர், &c. See பருவம். அறுபொழுது, s. The six different portions of the day; 1. மாலை, the first four hours after sunset, or ten nalikies. 2. யாமம், four hours, or ten nalikies after மாலை. 3. வைகறை, four hours after யாமம் or before sunrise. 4. காலை or விடியல், four hours after sunrise or வைகறை. 5. நண்பகல், from eleven A. M. to two P. M. 6. ஏற்பாடு, from three to six P. M. அறுவர், s. Six persons--men or women. (p.)--Note. For other similar words, see அறு. ஆறங்கம், s. The six subjects embraced in வேதாங்கம்; which see. (p.) ஆறாமீனறவோட்டு, s. The transit of the sun through the pleiades, regarded by seamen, as a critical or disastrous season, when rough weather is to be looked for. ஆறுகட்டி, s. Place, room, space, position, situation, இடம். 6. A form of the seventh or locative case, ஏழனுருபு. 7. The side of a thing, place, quarter, region, பக்கம். 8. An elephant, யானை. 9. Interim, opportunity, con venient season, season, சமயம். 1. The full moon, பௌரணை. 11. A measure of length, breadth, thickness, &c., நீட்டலளவையிலொ ன்று. 12. One of the three நாடி, or passages for the breath--that through the left nostril, the lunar nerve or vessel, திரிநாடி யிலொன்று. 13. One of the (நாடி) nerves or arteries, தசநாடியிலொன்று. (See நாடி.) 14. (misused for எடை) Weight, gravity நிறை. (See சுழிமுனை, and பிங்கலை.) நல்லாரிடைப்புக்கு. Associating with the good. இடைகலை, s. The breath of the left nostril--as சந்திரகலை. See பிங்கலை. இடைக்கட்டு, s. A girdle, sash. 2. The allowance made for the weight of a vessel before weighing any thing in it. இடைக்காடன், s. A Rishi or சித்தன்--one of the eighteen. இடைக்கிடை. Here and there, interspersed, நடுநடுவே. 2. Of like weight, even weight, equilibrium, நிறைக்குநிறை இடைக்குலநாதன், s. Vishnu as brought up by shepherds. இடைக்குறை, s. [in grammar.] A word shortened in the middle, syncope, elision; as ஓதி for ஓந்தி, camelion. (See விகாரம்.) 2. An island, blank space in a river, &c., ஆற்றிடைக்குறை. இடைக்கொள்ளை, s. Pillaging, plunder, free booty, plundering without regard to either party, நடுக்கொள்ளை. 2. (in Agastiar.) The ravages of an epidemic discase, கொள்ளைநோயான்வருமழிவு. இடைசுருங்குபறை, s. A small drum tapering in the middle, உடுக்கை. இடைசூரி, s. [prov.] Gold or silverbeads interspersed here and there between sacred or other beads, உருத்திராக்க முதலியவற்றிற்கிடையிற்கோத்திடுவது. இடைச்சனி--இடையெழுஞ்சனி, s. The eleventh lunar asterism, in which Saturn is considered very malignant. See கடையெழுஞ்சனி and முதலெழுஞ் சனி. இடைச்சன், s. The second child, இரண்டாம்பேறு. (c.) இடைச்சாதி, s. The second or middle tribe of வைசியர்--the third caste. இடைச்சேரி, s. A shepherd's village. இடைத்தட்டு, s. Getting profit indirectly by interposing between parties, &c. or by purchasing goods of one and selling them again from a distance. இடைநடு, s. The middle emphatically (a pleonasm in rhetoric.) இடைநரை, s. Hair or beard growing grey here and there. இடைநிலை, s. In verbs generally, the characteristics of tense, வினையிடைநிலை. 2. A neutral state, neutral or middle state, stagnation in business transactions, இருபுறத்திலுஞ்சாராமனிற்கை. 3. In some compound nouns, one of the component parts, பெயரிடைநிலை. இடைநிலைத்தீபகம், s. One of the beauties of poetry, விளக்கணிமூன்றிலொன்று. See தீபகம். இடைநிலைமயக்கு, s. [in orthography.] The proper combination of letters in the middle of a word, மொழியி லிரண்டெழுத்து மயங்கிநிற்கை--if the same consonant be repeated in the middle of a word, it is called, உடனிலைமெய்மயக்கு; if otherwise, it is called, வேற்றுநிலைமெய்ம யக்கு. இடைநீரினிற்க, inf. [prov.] To swim with the body erect and the water only up to the waist. இடைப்பட, inf. To interpose, happen in the interim, come in, between, among, &c., to happen, இடையிலுண்டாக. இடைப்படுதானம், s. Giving of a secondary order, bestowing through pity on the poor, the blind, மத்திமதானம். இடைப்பழம், s. Ripe fruits interspersed among the unripe. இடைப்பழம்பழுத்தல், v. noun. Ripening as fruits here and there. இடைப்பிறவரல், v. noun. Words intervening between any one word and another with which it makes sense--as between the noun and its attribute, &c., எழுவாய்முதலிய தொடரினுள் இடையிலேற்ற பிற சொல்வரல். இடைப்புழுதி, s. Land in a state for sowing, neither very moist nor very dry, காய்ந்துங்காயாதிருக்கிறபுழுதி. இடைப்புள்ளி, s. Marks scattered here and there--as in tobacco leaves, &c., fruits, &c. இடைப்பூட்டு, s. A truss, girdle, அரைப்பூட்டு. இடைப்போகம், s. An interior crop, out of season, இடையிற்புன்பயிர்விளைவு. இடைமடக்கு, s. Silencing one by vociferation, இடையிற்றடுக்கை. 2. Haughty speaking, இடக்குமடக்கானபேச்சு. 3. [in prosody.] The repetition of a word in the middle of a line with a varied meaning. See மடக்கு. இடைமுள், s. Small, new eruptions about a healing ulcer or bile, மறு முள்பாய்கை. 2. A disease, a kind of eruption, ஓர்கரப்பன். இடைமேடு, s. Rice-land of moderate height, நடுத்தரமானமேடு. இடையற, inf. To cease or terminate suddenly. இடையறாவன்பு, s. Never-ceasing love. இடையன், s. (fem. இடைச்சி.) A shepherd--as occupying a middle position. இடைப்புத்திபிடரியிலே. The shepherds have their wit in their nape; i. e. they have none. இடையன்கால்வெள்ளி, s. [prov.] The star Aldabaran in the constellation Aries, ஓர்விண்மீன். இடையாந்தரம், s. An intermediate space or time. அந்தவேலை யிடையாந்தரத்திலே கெட்டுப்போ யிற்று. The business was interrupted, spoiled in the interim. இடையாயர், s. Persons of a middling class in piety, excellence, &c. See தலை and கடை. இடையிட, inf. To intervene, be interspersed, to have intermediate spaces either of time or place, to intermit, happen intermediately, நடுவிற்றோன்ற. இடையிட்டுவந்தசெல்வம், s. Acquired wealth and prosperity, obtained during life, not derived from ancestors. இடையிட்டெதுகை, s. The எது கை or rhyming of the third letter in every other line. இடையிடை. From time to time, at intervals, intervening space. இடையிலேகொண்டுபோக, inf. To take by theft or force, to plunder fruits, furniture, &c. 2. To take off property at one's death--as persons who are not heirs. 3. To seize and carry off property from one who has stolen it--as a constable from a thief. (c.) இடையிலேவயிறுவளர்க்க, inf. To get a living at the expense of others, not reducing one's own stock. (c.) இடையினவெதுகை, s. One of the இனவெதுகை--that in which the second letter of each line is any of the medial letters. இடையீடு, s. Obstacle, impediment, frustration, விக்கினம். 2. Equivalent, equilibrium, ஈடு. இடையூறு, s. To be engaged, be intent, &c. on an object, ஒன்றுபட. 3. To agree, suit, be agreeable, பொருந்த. 4. To copulate, புணர. ஒன்றவில்லை. It is not convenient. 2. They are not fit. 3. (They) (the things or parts) are not united, not joined well, &c. தேகத்தொன்றுநோய். Disease which befalls the body. (வைராக்கிய.) ஊழொன்றியிருப்பின். If destiny favor-ஒன்றப்பார்க்க, inf. The eleventh vowel, ஓகாரம். 2. A particle, இடைச்சொல். It has various uses; in நன்னூல், eight different meanings are given to it. (a) ஒழியிசை, a mark of ellipsis denoting the omission of a counter-part to what is expressed--as கொள லோகொண்டான், true he has obtained his object (but he will not prosper by it). (b) வினா, interrogatives--as சாத்தனோவந்தான், is it Sattan that came? (c) சிறப்பு, speciality, particularity, &c., an interjection of surprise. This is two-fold. 1. உயர்வுசிறப் பு, relating to objects of superiority, preeminence, &c.--as ஓஒ பெரியன், heigh day! he is an illustrious person. 2. இழிவுசிறப்பு, relating to objects of inferiority, baseness, &c.--as ஓஒ கொடியன், Oh! he is a cruel wretch. (d) எதிர்மறை, negation--as யானோ செய்வேன், will I do it? implying I will not. (e) தெரிநிலை, ascertainment, clear perception, appeal to the hearer, &c.-as ஆணோஅதுவுமன்றுபெண்ணோஅதுவுமன்று, it is neither male nor female. (f) கழிவு, bereavement, an interjection of pity--as ஓஒ தமக் கோருறுதியுணராரோ, alas, alas, they have found no way of salvation. (g) அசைநிலை, expletive--as காணியவம்மினோ, come let us see. (h) பிரிநிலை, distinguishing, marking-as அவனோகொண்டான், it was he who bought it. In addition to these it also serves to express doubt--as நீனிறமுகிலோபசியசைவல மோநெடுந்திரைகொழித்ததெள்ளறலோ, is the hair of the damsel analogous to the blue clouds, to the green moss, or the black sand on the shore drifted by the billows (நைட); அதென்னவோதெரியாது, What that can be I know not.

kaṇam (p. 88) s. A particle, a trifle, சி றுமை. Wils. p. 183. KAN'A. 2. A minute portion of time, a moment, காலநுட்பம். 3. A measure of time equal to thirty கலை or four minutes, ஓர்காலஅளவு. wils. p. 261. KHAN'A. 4. A company, tribe, class, clan, flock, herd, a series, கூட்டம். 5. A body of troops. (See கணகம்.) [in astrology.] Asterisms classed under three heads as indicating human, infernal, and divine interference in their influence on the birth of children, நட்சத்திரங்களாற்குறிக்குமூவகைக் கணம். 9. The retinue of a deity, தேவக ணம். 1. One of the ten பொருத்தம், or series of poetry auspicious or the contrary according to the feet of which it is composed. It is modified into eight kinds, ஓர் செய்யுட்பொருத்தம். 11. One of the பொருத்தம் concerning marriage, கணப்பொருத்தம். 12. A star, விண்மீன். (p.) கணந்தோறும். Every moment. ஒருகணத்திலேவந்துவிடுவேன். I will come in a moment. குணமென்னுங்குன்றேறிநின்றார் வெகுளிகணமேயுங் காத்தலரிது. The anger of those who have attained to the summit of virtue, though it is ever so transient, is hardly endurable-(குறள்.) கணநாதர்--கணநாயகர், s. The attendants of Siva, கணாதிபர். கணபதி, s. Ganesa, விநாயகன். கணப்பொருத்தம், s. One of the அட்டகணம். 2. One of the விவாகப்பொருத் தம். கணப்பொழுது, s. A moment, ச ணப்பொழுது கணமூலம், s. The root of longpepper. கணமூலி, s. The சாணாக்கி herb, Ocimum, L. கணாதிபன், s. Ganesa, விக்கினேசு ரன். 2. Siva, சிவன். கணேசன், s. Ganesa, son of Siva and Parvati--god of wisdom and remover of obstacles--whence he is invoked in all new undertakings. He is represented as a short man with an elephant's head and large belly, வினாயகன். Wils. p. 278. GAN'ESHA. விவாககணம்--வதுவைக்கணம், s. The correspondence between the constellations under which the bride and bridegroom were born. It is of three kinds, viz.: 1. தேவகணம், when both the bride and bridegroom are born under the following seven constellations, அச்சு வினி, அத்தம், அனுடம், இரேவதி, சோதி, புநர்பூசம் and மிருகசீரிடம். The union of such is regarded auspicious. 2. மனிதகணம், when they are born under the following eleven constellations, உத்திரம், உரோகணி, உத்திரட்டா தி, உத்திராடம், திருவாதிரை, திருவோணம், பரணி, பூசம், பூரட்டாதி, பூரம் and பூராடம். Or even if the former be of the first class, and the latter of the second, or vice versa, it is thought indifferent. 3. இராக்கதகணம், when they are born under the following constellations, அவிட்டம், ஆயிலியம், கார்த்தி கை, கேட்டை, சதயம், சித்திரை, மகம், மூலம், and விசாகம், it is thought indifferent; but should the first be of either of the former class and the second of the last class, or vice versa, it is thought inauspicious. இக்கணம், s. This instant, now. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of ominous feet with which the invocation of the poem may begin, viz.: (1) நிலம் (ground), நிலக் கணம், a foot consisting of three நிரை; (which see)--as கருவிளங்கனி. (2) நீர் (water), நீர்க்கணம், a foot consisting of one நேர் and two நிரை--as கூவிளங்கனி. (3) மதி (moon), சந்திரகணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, and two நேர்; (which see)--as புளிமாங்காய். (4) இயமானன் (life, soul), இந் திரகணம், a foot consisting of three நேர்-as தேமாங்காய். A poem in which the invocation commences with any of the above four கணம், is believed by Tamulians to bring good luck to the hero of the poem. (5) சூரியன் (sun), சூரியகணம், a foot consisting of one நேர், one நிரை and one நேர்--as கூவிளங்காய்; this foreshows that the hero of the poem will soon become a coward. (6) தீ (fire), தீக் கணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, one நேர் and one நிரை--as புளிமாங்கனி; this portends a loss of health. (7) வாயு (air), மாருதகணம், a foot consisting of two நேர் and one நிரை--as தேமாங்கனி; this foretells the loss of wealth. (8) ஆகாயம் (sky, expanse), அந்தரகணம், a foot consisting of two நிரை and one நேர்--as கருவிளங்காய்; this portends shortness of life. The last four கணம், are on the whole considered to be inauspicious. See சீர். பதினெண்கணம், s. The eighteen classes of dependent supernals, viz.: 1. அமரர், immortals, the inhabitants of Swerga. 2. சித்தர், a kind of gods. 3. அசுரர், demons. 4. தைத்தியர், another kind of demons. 5. கருடர், another kind of gods. 6. கின்னரர், celestial musicians. 7. நிருதர், a kind of demons. 8. கிம்புரு டர், a kind of celestial musicians who possess a human face and the body of a bird. 9. காந்தருவர், heavenly choristers. 1. இயக்கர், demigods who minister to gods, attendants particularly on குபே ரன். 11. விஞ்சையர், heavenly magicians. 12. பூதர், ghosts, familiar spirits. 13. பிசாசர், devils. 14. அந்தரர், wanderers. 15. முனிவர், sages, hermits, learned men. 16. உரகர், serpents. 17. ஆகாயவாசிகள், those who dwell in the air. 18. போக பூமியர், those who by the practice of virtue in this world have attained a residence in that of the particular principal deity whom they worshipped. They are ever blooming and young; their time of residence, however in this abode of happiness depends upon the merit they had acquired previous to their admission. நாற்கணம், s. The four classes of letters, viz.: 1. உயிர்க்கணம், vowels. 2. வன்கணம், the six hard-sounding letters. 3. மென்கணம், the six soft-sounding letters. 4. இடைக்கணம், the six middlesounding letters. கணம், s. A circle, வட்டம். 2. A ball, rotundity, திரட்சி 3. One of the eight kinds of diseases in children--a kind of hectic fever, ஓர்நோய். 4. A kind of grass, ஓர்புல். (p.) கணக்காய்ச்சல், s. [impr. கணைக் காய்ச்சல்.] A kind of lingering fever in children. 48) *

kṇai (p. 89) s. Cylindrical or globular form, திரட்சி. 2. An arrow, அம்பு. 3. The eleventh lunar asterism, பூரநாள். 4. Fullness, plenitude, plumpness, நிறைவு. 5. A curved club, வளைதடி. (p.) கணைக்கால், s. The leg from the foot to the knee, the shank, the shin, சங் கம். கணைதொடுக்க, inf. To shoot an arrow. கணையுலக்கை, s. The top of a pestle, that end which is without a ferrule, உலக்கைக்கட்டை. கணையெழுத்தாணி, s. [prov.] A blunt, or worn-out stile. சிவிகைக்கணை, s. The curved pole of a palankeen. 10)

krṇm (p. 96) s. Tumbling heels-overhead-as an art, gambling, தலைகீழாயுருளுதல். 2. A variety in dramatic action, கூத்தின்விகற் பம். 3. (p.) Intellectual faculties, viz.: thought, reason, will and energy. (See அந்தக்கரணம்.) 4. An organ of sense, or இந்திரியம். (See இந்திரியம்.) 5. The organs of action, or கன்மேந்திரியம். 6. Copulation (modus coeundi), கலவிக்கரணம். 7. Cause, motive, காரணம். 8. Instruments, means, உபகரணம். 9. Karana or astrological division of time. The karanas are eleven, viz.: பவம்,, lion, சிங்கம். 2. பாலவம், tiger, புலி. 3. கௌலவம், hog, பன்றி. 4. தைதுலம் ass, கழுதை. 5. கரசம் elephant, யானை. 6. வனிசம், bullock, இடபம். 7. பத்திரவம், hen, கோழி. 8. சகுனி, bird, பறவை. 9. சதுர்பாதம், dog, நாய். 1. நாகவம், snake, பாம்பு. 11. கிமித்துக்கி னம், worm, புழு; of these ten are moveable and four fixed; two are equal to a lunar day or the time during which the moon's motion amounts to 6 degree; 1'. 12. Actions, moral actions, rites, நற்கிரியை. 13. Astrological or astronomical calculation, கணி தம். Wils. p. 191.KARAN'A. கரணம்போட, inf. To tumble, to play at gambols. 2. To solicit very earnestly-as a child, to go to play, &c. 3. To use all possible means, to take the utmost pains. கரணவாசனை--கரணவாதனை, s. Sensations, experience, &c., painful or pleasant-as associated with bodily and mental organs, faculties, &c. திரிவிதகரணம், s. The three classes of organs or faculties. 67) *

kẕutai (p. 98) s. An ass, கத்தபம். 2. (c.) A dolt, மூடன். 3. (p.) The sign of the sixth guardian of the eight angles or points of the world. வடமேற்றிசைப்பாலன்குறி. கழுதைப்புண்ணுக்குப்புழுதிமருந்து. Dust is the medicine for an ass's wounds; i. e. for the poor any thing serves for medicine. கழுதையுங்குதிரையும்பிணைந்தாற்போலே. Illmatched--as an ass and horse. கழுதைக்கரணம், s. [in astrology.] One of the eleven தைதுலாகரணம். கழுதைக்குடத்தி--கழுதைப்புலி, s. A hyena, புலிக்குடத்தி. கழுதைக்குட்டி--கழுதைமறி, s. A young ass. கழுதைநிறம், s. Grey, the color of an ass. கழுதைக்குணம்--கழுதையாட்டம், Stupidity. கழுதைத்திசை, s. [in astrology.] The north-west quarter, வடமேற்றிசை. கழுதைமயிர்பிடுங்கியூர், s. A country where they pluck off the hair of the ass; i. e. doing as others do without reason. கழுதைவாகனி, s. The goddess of ill-luck, மூதேவி. கழுதைவிட்டை, s. Ass's dung. கழுதைவிட்டையாயினுங்கைநிறையவிருந்தாற்போ தும். If the hand is full though with nothing but ass's dung. It is enough; i. e. get a great quantity. கோவேறுகழுதை, s. Mule. 79)
